Gestalt, constellation of joy, human wreckage, salvation....what a number here. Hats off to Bryan Devendorf for drumming up something wonderful.
What a stunningly beautiful video.
But I guess that’s what The National have always done.
To take deep, painful, complicated emotions and turn them into something of beauty and comfort.

For me, this video captures the duality of The National perfectly: deep and profound emotions covered with ridiculousness, awkwardness and self-awareness. I love you guys for your ability to capture this state of mind for everyone who feels the same way. In this case you managed to do it both with the song and with the video!
it moves me so much, the way Matt sings us the stories and conversations of just ordinary people , so so moving and beautiful
This song has been on my mind since the album came out. Repeating again and again.. In the future this will be one of the The National classics! Also Phoebe's voice is so perfect!

Same here, and Carin at the liqueur store. Saw them recently in London England and was very impressed.
Among those “I think it’s over for us” songs, it’s one of the very best, along with the likes of “Late For The Sky” by Jackson Browne.
In the most painful way, this song (in my very subjective interpretation) really summarises how my last relationship ended months ago: suffering from depression and insecurity, overthinking ("all I am is shreds of doubt") while my partner realised they couldn't help me or pull from the abyss. When I was in the relationship, I definitely had the catastrophising perspective on it ("I think our feet are gonna slip/I think our hands are gonna shake/I think our eyes are gonna cry/I think our hearts are gonna break") from past hurts and it ultimately reached a point where "everything melted in less than a week." This song is difficult to listen to but as usual The National put so much heart and reality into these heartbreaking situations that it helps you understand and process things a bit easier. Thanks for helping me through a tough time.

This is so, so beautiful. Matt and Phoebe's voices are perfect together. And the lyrics are so moving. The National have smashed it once again - can't wait to listen to the new album (arriving Monday I hope!) and already got tickets to see them again in London in 2024.
The National need to go more rocky like Mr November, there are too many songs like this now.

Within a few seconds of the clip starting, I recognised the animation style as identical to 'Arj & Poopy'. Looked up Bernard Derriman and confirmed it. I had no idea he also worked on Bob's Burgers, nor that he's Australian. The things you learn!

I wonder what people who think this song is bad listen to. It's fucking amazing and invokes feelings unlike any other.
i listen to a lot of The National's earlier music, but their last two albums sound incredibly stale and unsurprising to me. It's like they're writing the same two or three songs over and over and over. Mood-, tone-, and even sound-wise they're stunningly homogenous.

I wasn't talking about their album though but this song specifically. Anyone who says this sounds bad probably has the worst taste in music.
