    You should always be kind enough to answer people's comments...not just those that compliment you. This is a beautiful hat if you would correct the tutorial.

    Great pattern and great tutorial! Well done for beginners and more advanced crocheters.
    Just a quick comment... you say in your tutorial video to chain 30 but in your written pattern you say 40, I did 30 which was too small and got half way through before I realized I didn't have a large enough pattern. A bit frustrating to get that far to just have to pull it apart. It may be to your advantage to comment about that or fix it so no one else has this issue. Thanks for sharing!

      I was a new crocheter and gave up because I thought I was doing it all wrong. Years later lol yes years later I saw it again (this time more experienced) saw the mistake and made it in a couple hrs. I truly almost gave up crochet because of this video. Lol 😆

    I just did this pattern and it worked out quite well!
    I'm working on a second hat, and what I've found needs to be done so you can adjust to make the hat bigger or smaller than what's in the video is to start off by chaining multiples of 4 and then adding 1 more chain (this way, you'll end your foundation row with 4 chains instead of 3). This will be the height of your hat (minus the band).
    Keep in mind that the work you're doing on the hat repeating the shell pattern will be creating the circumference of the hat (NOT the height), and that you'll eventually turn your work 90 degrees in order to make the band. So, just repeat the pattern as many times as you need so that it'll fit around the head of the person you're making the hat for. I did the pattern using a 6.5 mm hook for a total of 35 rows which worked out to about 21-22 inches. I crocheted the band using a 5 mm hook.
    The band can end up being quite tight, so I'd recommend working in a few extra rows of the shell pattern so the band can end up being a little wider, or just making sure you crochet the band loosely so it doesn't end up being too tight.

    Ok - I read all the comments, and I almost didn't go through with making this b/c of all the "mistakes" people were noting. I'm glad I did it anyway - what a cute beanie! And the instruction is actually VERY GOOD, so thanks so much for sharing. If you just make the adjustment at the beginning & chain 40 instead of 30, watch the video & LISTEN to the instructions, you'll be absolutely fine. Don't get too caught up in the part about how you should have 35 stitches. Try looking at it as, you should have 8 "peaks" in your rows. I actually modified the pattern slightly b/c I must have kind of a small head. I didn't go the 34 rows - I stopped at 30. I also added a Pom Pom to mine. Great video and really nice finished product! I'll keep watching your tutorials if you keep being kind enough to make them.

    Thank you for sharing. As suggested by others I did multiples of 4 plus 1 for the foundation chain and did not really worry about the numbers of rows. i just measured the circumference of the head of person I was making the hat for and that's how i made my rows. I used a J hook for making the shell rows and switched to an H. hook for what I refer to as the ribbing for the hat. Thank you again so very much for this tutorial. Will be making more as Christmas gifts.

    • @ericasiddeeq5876
      @ericasiddeeq5876 7 років тому

      Hi! So how many chains were used in your foundation chain? Also, did you use the same yarn as she? I have yarn that I want to use, but I can't figure out the gauge. Couldn't I just measure my head along the way to make sure it fits? Thanks!

    • @vvien4617
      @vvien4617 7 років тому

      Erica Siddeeq. I followed the suggestions of the other people who said to do multiples of 4 plus 1. I did 41 chains in total. I had 6 shells per row and for the circumference I ended up making 37 rows as this is the circumference of the head of the person I was making the hat for. As per the tutorial I used J/6mm hook for foundation chain and for making the shells. Then I switched to H/5mm hook for the ribbing. The yarn I used is Impeccable by Loops & Thread. Hope this helps.

    • @ericasiddeeq5876
      @ericasiddeeq5876 7 років тому

      Hmmm, so the number of rows gave you the circumference? And once you got to 37 rows, how did you know that was big enough? You measured the unfinished hat around their head? Ok, so we're not using 40 like she said? Why is that?

    • @vvien4617
      @vvien4617 7 років тому +4

      Erica Siddeeq . I just followed the suggestions of the other ladies that made it into multiples of 4 plus 1 and it worked for me. My guess is 40 chains will work too because I don't see it affecting the look of the hat especially when you will have to fold it as lobg as it fits your head. Yes, the rows make up circumference. I am now making one for mtself and for my head I made 35 rows which is about 24 and a half inches.

    What I did different is on the last row before going down the side was instead of chaining 3 and going into the next shell leaving a large hole. I chained one filled in the hole area with 2 dc and single crochet in the next chain. Repeated across and it doesn't add any more stitches and there are no holes.

      I am working this up right now. So far so good - the only few things I saw was at the beginning where you have the gauge you have hook sizes H & I and in the materials you have Hooks J and H - I worked J and H and the gauges came out for me. (I am a tight crocheter so this was lucky for me LOL). Also when you are starting out you say to use a H hook - but when we end Row 35 you have us switching to a H hook - When reading Row 1 of the pattern - towards the end you don't have (work to the last 4 sts, sk 3 and sc in last stitch) I only have about 8 rows done - but will share with you when I'm done. I'll post to your Facebook page. It's super quick and easy so far. Am loving it!

      Obviously not the crochet guru, but you'd want to increase the foundation chain. The rows are going to determine the circumference of the hat. The length is the slouch :)

      Is there a specific increment I should use to increase the chain? Or it doesn't matter? I really have large head circumference, will need more than 20 inches!

    After chaining 30, the stitches don’t add up; I’m still left with two sts at the end.

    Referring to bluejello007... She is correct! Multiples of four plus one will give you a certain amount of shells( your choice, depending on how long/slouched you'd like your hat to be) and 4 extra remaining chains. I used, 32 foundation chains, which gave me 6 shells and 4 chains remaining. Also, please pay attention to where you're making your stitches and make sure they're going into the correct chain. It can sometimes be fooling to the eye. Stretch your work out by holding the bottom left and right corner when beginning hat. It'll help make stitches that are hidden, appear more visible. When beginning the tutorial, you are working the 'slouch' part of hat, not band. You will be using your J hook. If you want your hat to fit a certain size then all you have to do is take your piece and wrap it around your head so that rows are vertically up and see if your sides meet together without stretching. These edges will soon be sewed together to form hat. Stop ganging up on crochet guru.. She is extremely talented and has devoted her time and energy on providing us with beautiful patterns, and we were all fairly informed that you need to know the basics of crochet from the very start of her tutorial. If you look on UA-cam some more than you'll find tons and tons of vids on basics of crocheting. Try looking up some stuff about the video you're watching in other videos. That helped me tremendously. I can't thank people who do these tutorials ENOUGH. They have taught me everything I know! Thank you so much!
    Crochet Guru... I love your tutorial and even more, love the style of hat! I don't want to seem insulting to by giving tips, and want to say that I've gone through many, many other ppls tutorials where I've found myself beyond frustrated and confused with. Your mistakes are minimal and you fairly warned ppl from the very start that it was an easy pattern but for semi- experienced crocheters. Therefore I was able to figure it out on my own without bombarding you for answers... When I think you did wonderfully! So I hope it's ok that I left some tips to the beginners.... Love your work and ty.

    How DO you get 18 shells from chaining 30? I feel you have to chain 74 to have 2 chains at the end of row 1?????
