Vinyl Buying Habits I Decided To Change - My Success & Failures

  • In this video, I review and assess the vinyl buying goals I made for myself several months back. I put some pretty strict rules in place in hopes of building an incredible collection while curbing the growth. How am I doing? Find out the grades that I give myself after 6 months of living with these rules. In this video, I discuss bands/artists such as The Beatles, Kiss, Al Di Meola, The Commodores, Phil Collins, Dire Straits, Lee Morgan, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, J Scott Bergman and more.
Here's the link to J Scott Bergman's album "Disarmers."

A rule I had to let go.....buying the whole back catalogue of an artist just because I love a particular album. Great video as usual. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your father. Keep well.

Thank you for the kind words. Like you, I won't buy an album that I don't love even if it's a favorite artist. I have kept that rule for a very long time. That's one I have been successful about. Lol. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

Hello Melinda! Great follow-up video. Don’t we all have our personal rules and limitations when it comes to collecting? I collect in 4 categories :
    1.”Best of” = many bands/artists. Some I’ve just got a 7” or two.
    2.Just the albums I like by band/artist.
    3.All official albums by band/artist.
4.Absolutely EVERYTHING by Mike Oldfield. And I DO mean everything. Singles,EP’s,12”,Extended remixes, Best of/Greatest hits, Official, semi-official, unofficial, Bootlegs, Re-masters, anniversary editions. Re-mixes, Reissues, Collaborations and so on. It’s an obsession , hahaha. I truly have it ALL. Even the 2012 single sided 12” olympic ceremony opening. If it’s on vinyl , it’s about 15 feet away from me right now. Take care and play something you haven’t played in a long time. It want’s to be played.
    A & R.

I think as you get older you have to start thinking about what’s your end goal for your record collection; once you have made that decision than it’s easier to par down what you have. I have spent thousands and thousands and thousands of hours looking at buying and categorizing what I have. Now I look at what I have and say how often am I going to play a certain album and if it’s not very high I give it to
a younger collector because music is basically history and all you can ask is the person you give it too will listen too an album enjoy it and take care of it.

Al di meola had a heart attack several weeks ago but is recovering well. He is going to embark on a tour in 2024 playing electric guitar. He's amazing live if you can see him in a small intimate setting. I've seen him several times over the years. He's truly a master musician and great human being. You should look for his album with Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin "Friday Night in San Francisco"

An old boyfriend introduced me to Al di meola and happy to say, I saw Al perform live in the band, Return To Forever! I have 2 of his cds, Electric Rendezvous & Orange and Blue. As I was growing up I was collecting vinyl. Then the compact disc came along. Like your vinyl collection, that’s my cd collection. Vinyl is more costly and causes you to buy the same album for different reasons, so I decided to continue collecting cds. On occasions, I still pick up vinyl. However, I’m getting older and I can feel myself slowing down on buying music. Went into the record store and came out with 3 cds and that’s not normal. I’ll give myself a B! 😊 Also, thank you for sharing your story about your family. I’m from divorced parents too! Enjoyed your video!

After foolishly selling off my albums and 45's 30 years ago I have spent the last decade "re-acquiring" my collection. I started out purchasing pretty heavily but have reached a point where it would have to be a serious upgrade or Holy Grail type purchase or a long out of pressing re-issue. I'm still failing to curb my extraneous purchases...but I'm trying😊

I have an unopened analog sourced blue album from Canada that has the UMe logo on the back of it that’s supposed to be an inferior version of the 2014 blue album. Not enough can be said about "I don't care anymore" As a beat down sophomore in HS it propelled me into a trance of wanting to run away and do something with my life. But the small town eyes held me in place for more abuse, disapproval and neglect. The song can often bring me back to a tumultuous time, but there is always still a glimmer of hope in it's presentation. The drums and synths work seamlessly together. and Phil is screaming his head off. Lots of passion in this one. 💖💖

Record stores are getting far and few in between. This is due to costs of inventory, and smash and grab criminal thugs. Most everything eventually will be on-line because of the criminality. People just don't feel safe anywhere in the USA now. However, that should not stop us from going to record stores. I live near a big city, and if I need a record, I will go there and check their inventory as it changes weekly as they take trades, etc.... Noise on records? Do you have Gruv glide spray? Audioquest anti-static record brush? You need a sylus cleaner brush and cleaner. These are all a must for your Planar 8. You have a GREAT system now!

Just a couple rules so far for me: I stopped going to record shows and cut way back on record shops. I also have 7 unique pressings of Dark Side of the Moon, not counting my gold CD, 30th Anniversary SACD, and my Immersion Box Set, so I too can try to let some things go. I have multiples on several other titles too. I too have realized I can't fit another record shelf without adding a new room to the house, so I have to stop and downsize.

Hello Robert, I too have the 30th anniversary gold SACD of DSOTM. It was my first CD copy.
I would strongly suggest that you get the reissued Japanese Toshiba Black Triangle CD pressing from 1986. It is the same matrix as the ridiculously priced 1983 original, CP35-3017, but it is much cheaper.
Myself and my son compared the Japanese edition to the other versions (including my 30th anniversary SACD) and we were shocked with the difference. The Japanese CD was so clear and the others sounded muffled in comparison.

Like I mention in your previous video I had the habit to order all audiophile records and go to my local record store wish is a great record store and it’s been months since I bought a new record the last one I got it was a moth ago for pre-order “new order substance” I was looking for this record for long time and is out again after 30 years.
Other then that I haven’t buy more records I only buy the ones y really want but that habit of buying a lot is gone.
    I don’t buy more 45s either.
For me it became to expensive and sometimes I didn’t have a time to listen all my records.

The red album (1962-1966) is what got me into the Beatles and foreign music in general (I am Greek). This happened way far back in 1989 and it (of course) changed my life! At some point, I got hooked on collecting Red and Blue albums, especially if I found them very cheap! I think I now have 10 of each one (excluding the CDs and cassette versions of them!). I get all your points and I think I'm running out of space too! But I can't help thinking that the Beatles changed my life for the better (and possibly made me poorer, haha...). Enjoy your vinyl and take care. Always nice to see a woman in what I've always thought was a man's hobby...

I did see people upset by the now and then cover art. It’s by Ed Ruscha who also did Mc Cartney 3 I’m told. It made more sense the simplicity to me when I found out he did it. I really like that cover art. The back art looks cool too. To those who may not care for it, look into his artwork and you might appreciate his style more.
I don’t really have Beatles in my collection. I always figured other people needed their records more than me. Also Beatle collecting is too overwhelming for me to try and keep up with. Thanks Melinda! Stay inspired and God Bless You and your family.

It’s funny to know where the vinyl collecting starts and when the vinyl enthusiasts takes over! I think you sound like you’re at the Vinyl enthusiasts point which means your collection shouldn’t grow that much ever anymore! I don’t buy much new vinyl anymore and every once in a while, I pick up some kind of box set because I’m suckered into it from FOMO! But I’m really getting disciplined in this last year! Staying out of the stores is key! Good luck Melinda!

Love your channel! Love your enthusiasm for music! It's not everyone who can experience the emotional range of music. You talked about the Commodores' song Still. For me their most soul crushing song is Oh, No. Well, I don't want to get into that, but music to us audiophiles is so much more than just a sound in the background or something to dance to. Music speaks to our souls. It's therapy when we need it. It's joy when we celebrate. It's the language of our souls.
Anyway, I always get ideas to check out artists that I haven't yet discovered on your channel. Al DiMeola is now in my Amazon cart. I've heard the name before, but never bought anything from him. That changes on payday!

Melinda, I keep telling myself to slow down on vinyl purchases, yet I go to my favorite used record store and walk out with six or seven albums, spent less than $20 but still added more records! That Commodores album is somewhat hard to find. I got it a few years back, great set. “Sail On” and “Oh No” are my longtime favs from The Commodores.
I wasn’t going to get those Beatles albums, I too, have several versions, but the additional 20 songs being added (between the two sets) makes it worth it.

Great video! Makes me feel like my collecting addiction isn't so bad lol. One thing I'm great at is not buying the same copy of an album twice. I've always been firm on whatever copy of an album I get first, that's what I stick with. With a few exceptions however; if I get a gift of the same record, I'll keep it and also if one of my records gets damaged. I've had a record shatter before, oh dear lol. Also, the only reason I intentionally buy second copies is to use the second copy on my small portable record player. I like to go to the skatepark and play my records and I have a cool little Bluetooth headphone rig so I can leave my record player playing in my car while I skateboard with the bluetooth headphones playing the record. When the park is mostly empty, I'll just play it in the air. I don't want to bother anyone, so I do the bluetooth thing most of the time, and holy moly is it a lot of fun! It gives me a good way to play all of my records, otherwise they'll just be collecting dust. It's so much fun! Skateboarding to The Beatles actually fits really well, especially the early Beatles while I'm carving around the bowl! Also, I actually have a big history of jazz music and I got to meet my jazz hero Chick Corea, yet my jazz collection is quite small, but effective. One of my bad habits though is impulse buying, I have a lot of records that I don't really vibe with the music too much, but I keep them anyways. I've never sold any of my records, I've kept them all, even the broken ones.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  7 місяців тому

Well I never knew that years later, I would actually meet him after his concert in my city lol. I never told him about God, but I feel like I did metaphorically. He was a super cool guy, and he told me some musical advice when my dad asked him, he said, "Just play what you love!" Anyways, you take care as well 🙂

Thrift stores are my thing, in addition to my beloved record store and big box stores on occasion. Tough to stop buying! My latest record, only one this time and for $2.00, Lionel Richie "Can't Slow Down" in excellent condition and great recording too, however right next to the records there are old electronics and a Technics SA 104 in excellent condition and a pair of Sony SS H3500 caught my attention, total price $24.00. I now use that combo, and it sounds really good!, to power a TV in a spare bedroom. Well I too give myself a big F. I’m a sucker for anything Pink Floyd but especially the Beatles. I was 5 years old when I first saw them on Ed Sullivan, I remember when they broke up and I remember all too well the night John was killed. These songs are the soundtrack to my life.

I need to purge even more boldly. I've purged a lot, but my collection is not shrinking fast enough lol. ...and what has gone away are the titles that are mostly pop and rock that I know very well, on vinyl that's less than perfect, and which I'm content to stream. I don't need a noisy old Joan Jett or Billy Joel record (which I like but don't love) so a lot of 70s-80s pop classics went away. I'm building a killer jazz collection from reissues online, and local shops which get originals traded-in often. So the make-up is changing, but my total number of records isn't. Love your videos, as always.

I agree. I should probably let those older colored vinyl records go so that a true Beatles collector can enjoy them.

I think you graded yourself fairly...although I would have given you an A- on the 45's. One record isn't a huge deal. As to the Beatles red and blue..you were also spot on as to the grade..oh well:-) As for multiple copies...I would keep the error records and DJ copies.
I have a friend who i've given a bunch of hammered 45s too...he says they have had alot of love given their play quality. My weakness as to multiples is Elton John...especially 45's which I am weeding out the duplicates. I also have a huge collection of picture sleeves..many rough but some are hard to find.
All in all you did good in restraining yourself Melinda...it's not easy by any stretch of the imagination.

Hi Melinda, great video, and I totally get it. I think there are always ups and downs, we try to keep and build collections, sometimes it is hard to draw the line on what is necessary or not. I've decided to have a few titles of pop music as duplicates because of sentimental reasons, like the White Stripes, Kiss, Dark Side of the Moon, etc. I'm making a big push to sell duplicates or redundancies because at the end of the day I am going to listen to one copy, and the others will be taking space. Only exception I do is Jazz, but in my personal view there is a historical component that can't be reached by other genres. So I go for OGs and audiophile copies (archival X listening) on Blue Notes for example. Cornbread is an example lol. Congrats on picking that one. I've been building discipline slowly and learning to be more critical on what deserves space in my shelves.... Thanks for sharing!

I agree that jazz is historical and sounds great on vinyl. I find it's hard to let go of an original even if a later version sounds better. That's something I will need to work on. It sounds like what you are doing is very sensible. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

I'm not one for multiple copies - some collectors need to have every variation in pressing or artwork and that would drive me nuts - that would be basically buying the same music over and over - then some collectors focus on one artist and that would drive me nuts as well - surface noise is what vinyl sounds like - even the audiophile records reveal surface noise after only a few plays - I just enjoy the music as loudly as possible - Great video Melinda❤See you next week!

Like you, I am trying not to visit record shops as often as I spend too much money. When I heard about the Beatles Red and Blue 2023 re-mix I thought I must have, then I thought I have the originals, when they were first released in the 1970's, so I have pre-ordered the CD versions as the vinyl is so expensive and probably has some digital re-mastering involved. I try to purchase vinyl originals, but new releases/re-mixes as CD (usually cheaper too). It's still heart-breaking to hear about how your father was absent. As you say there are somethings that a parent should know about their child. After all they were once a child and would have hoped for a level of understanding and participation

Great video Melinda. I used to have a rule only a few years ago, never pay more than 35 pounds, for a vinyl record. Now, like the rules in George Orwell´s Animal Farm it has morphed into ´pay more than 35 pounds´ with the word ´never´ crossed out. It´s just the way of things, you have to spend more, so you just try to do it on less occasions. Just this week I have added my 500 albums into the discogs collection database. At least now I can check on my mobile, before buying the same album twice unintentionally. Thift shops/charity shops don´t have the bargains they had 10-15 years ago but very occasionally you might lucky with a less mainstream artist, so it´s still tempting to check .

I abandoned vinyl for CDs and digital files years ago in the pursuit of building an incredible digital music library. There were multiple reasons for the decision. CDs are relatively cheap and easy to find, and can be converted to lossless digital files easily. Those digital files can be taken anywhere, placed in the cloud, listened to at work, in the car, on the go and such. I can find identify multiple version easily by identifying the year the album was remastered/remixed and compare different versions of album quickly and easily. Takes a lot less space and easy to back-up the entire collection.

Hey Melinda. I took 4 years to streamline and upgrade. I literally just got done with the project. The last chapter is sending off my 9 or 10 records with edge warps, dishing, otherwise would be nm. I'll always buy, love the hobby, people. But I've pretty much got everything I've ever wanted. I have always kept a list of what I want. I live in so cal so Im surrounded with record stores but I've got pretty good discipline. Rules are good because it keeps you in line and focus on what you have. The only multiple copies of a record I have is Black Sabbaths "Master Of Reality" (1979 reissue-original came out and in '71. Also have the U.K Vertigo Swirl 1st pressing. Then I have the Leathur Motley Crue "Too Fast For Love" 1st pressing and the '82 Elektra release.

How fun is that to have part of your history immortalized on vinyl. Limiting a collection has been a good decision though I keep finding a new spot for records lol. I do keep purging but my tastes are so eclectic that I buy more than I need to. My biggest issue is when I sit back and think how much I have spent. I sometimes shake my head and wonder what am I thinking as this could have been used for something else. The older you get the more you think about that I think. Enjoyable video Melinda. Good morning Melinda. Thanks for another morning coffee video 😊. I thought I was Done with my Beatles collection. I have the best sounding Mono & Stereo versions of every studio album plus Red & Blue, Past & Mono masters and the Anthology albums. I am Not a fan of Giles Martins’ remixes for various reasons. So I never buy the annual Beatle releases. BUT! I believe they said Peter Jackson is involved with these Red & Blue remixes (even has the Universal Pictures logo on the back). I’m excited to hear what they can do with those early Beatles songs with this new de-mixing technology. So I will get these new remasters but with all the disappointing colored vinyl records lately, I’m sticking with the black. Learned that lesson again the hard way recently. But if they’re less than the previous analog remasters in any way shape or form, I’ll be sending them back or selling them. These new ones are digital afterall and Abbey Rd. Half Speed Mastering is hit and miss. I Hope this new song actually sounds like a Beatles song btw. I love Jeff Lynne but anytime he’s involved, the drums have more of an ELO than a Ringo sound. Anyway I’m excited to hear what technology can do with the Red album especially. The Blue is almost entirely the 2015 & 2017 mixes so I’m not as excited about that one, with exception of Now and Then. Anyway thanks and have a wonderful day

I’ve only been collecting vinyl for about two years now, so I am pretty new to the hobby and haven’t really developed a lot of rules yet. I think one I might have to implement is to catalog my records on discogs or something like that. Even with only about 80 albums, I have already purchased a couple of duplicates by mistake And had to sell them on eBay at a loss.
