Antique Store Outrage! Crazy Prices For Vinyl Records!

- Опубліковано 4 вер 2023
- In this video, I show and discuss crazy prices for records at an antique store. Some of the biggest treasures in my collection came from antique stores. It appears to me those days are gone. The prices I saw for some nice but "not so rare" records were through the roof. Records that appear in this video are from bands/artists such as Van Halen, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Queen, Boston Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Air Supply, The Police and more.

My experience at an antique show this summer was common records that looked like they had been dragged to the show down a gravel road priced $10-$20. Uneducated sellers must think these are the new Beanie Babies. I hope they enjoy keeping their overpriced records forever. 😀Great video, Melinda!
Oh my goodness. Some of those poor records were so mistreated. 😳 Thank you and take care.
I own a small used Record Store and this makes my blood boil !! If they want to kill our hobby off keep going. Records need to be affordable to attract young people to the joy of collecting, they see these prices that's it they stop looking and lose interest. I keep a ton of good clean Records in my shop for $5 to $10 and have no problem paying my bills and buying more inventory.
That's wonderful! Thank you for being one of the good guys. I wish you all the success! 🤗♥️
Stores near me don't charge one price, they look up what it last sold for on eBay and/or Discogs and price accordingly.
Most used vinyl is somewhere between $10 and $25.
Records aren't cheap as they used to be. Since it came back into fashion, EVERYBODY'S trying to make a buck on it! It's a shame.
Great video Melinda! 👏🏼🤘🏻
I agree! People are really cashing in on this hobby now. 😳 These prices are scary. Thank you and take care.
They sure are! Even if the record is damaged or a crappy one.😅
We used to sell antiques. Antique dealers generally have a few areas of expertise, but have an eye for things they can make money on as well. If Mrs Depression Glass is in a home buying glass, and sees a box of records, she may know nothing about records other than she can make some money on those. So she buys them. Some will mark them up, say 3x what they paid, and try to just turn them over and make their money. Some have the mindset that they can’t get “ripped off” so they start everything high, and after it sits, knock a little off, and then a little more until they sell it. Some are more stubborn than others, but that’s how it works.
I was just talking to a guy who I knew from antique shows who was telling me he just bought a bunch of records and CDs. He’s an expert on tools and guns. He knows nothing about records, and assumes that every Beatles album is worth a mint. He will do the “start high and work down method”. And learn a little bit a long the way
@@SDsailor7 I saw a copy of "Women & Children First" for 29.99 - faded cover, torn spine, the record looked like a cat's scratching post.
Why is it a shame that people are trying to make money "make a buck" when a certain hobby is doing well? I never understood this argument. If you are referring to them trying to sell them way over what they're worth, then that's another thing.
I couldn’t agree more! Antique malls/shops are ridiculous these days!
Such a disappointment. 🥲 Thank you and take care.
As with any market, the bottom line is if they didn't sell at that price, they wouldn't ask for it.
Do you think that store will keep that $85 tag on that album if it sits there for a year unsold? Probably not.
@@VideoArchiveGuy thanks for the reply. I just uploaded a tour of the brass armadillo, check it out if you have a chance!
It’s not just antique stores. It’s amazing what people are paying for common records on many online/Facebook sites. As the owner of a small record shop, it’s so discouraging to see people pay twice the price or more than they should for records. It’s so frustrating to see so many getting ripped off, because they don’t know any better.
I agree Mel!
I agree and thanks for being such an honest and fair record store owner. I'm sad for the new record collectors. It takes a while to learn about the pricing - what's fair and what's out of line. I'm glad some record stores are still treating their customers well. Thank you and I apologize for the delayed response. Take care. ♥️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy thanks for the response. I fight the good fight every day to bring more people into the world of vinyl at a fair price.
Here in UK. No great deals anymore. Everyone has jumped on the vinyl band wagon. Even charity shops. Now is the time to top up your CD collection. Cheers me dears....
I agree. If one is into CDs, these are the days to buy them up. They are the best bargain out there. Thank you and take care.
I love watching your videos as it gives me ideas on what records I could pick up next many thanks 🙏 💯keep rocking 😂
Thank you so much! I'm honored. 🤗♥️
Nice video. Like anything else, we must know prices in general when buying just about anything, including new and used records. A thrift shop where I bought a ton of albums over several years changed management and now prices are through the roof and so I walked away. Ditto for antique stores even in places we 'd expect to make good deals. It never hurts to bargain, the worst that can happen is a "no" answer.
I agree about bargaining. I bought a beautiful antique lamp yesterday because the seller took my offer. 😍 The prices were so high on the records that my offer would have been about a 60 percent discount. Lol. I didn't need them anyway. Thank you and take care.
Love the content Melinda. Long sub. Keep up the Great Work! I luckily carted around my 125+ records from my youth throughout the years and moves, started getting back into vinyl slowly over the last decade I'm 53 disabled and Really wanted the RSD VH live right here right now. Had to pick from Amazon for $165 last week. Not too bad considering the other crazy prices online + I had to have! I'm a huge VH fan. Got all originals to 0U812, then CD came. Pre ordered the New Sammy collection directly from VH store. The live sounds awesome on my new turntable Technics SL1200 GR and JBL L52. I'm All In Again! Peace from RI
That's a great live album. Money well spent in my opinion. I had to pay a lot for A Different Kind of Truth several years ago. That new Sammy box set should be very good. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Hello Melinda ! Excellent subject. When I got back into vinyl , around 2015/16 somewhere , a new/reissue 1Lp cost between $18-$23. A 2Lp went for $28-$35. Used records were $6-$15 , depending on rarity. Now : 1Lp = $22-$30 , 2Lp = $33-$55 and used records = $6-$20. So you can see we’ve had a slight increasement here too. (These are roughly numbers from Swedish Crowns to USD) Our ”problem” in Sweden , outside the big cities , are the scarcity of stores. However , the proprietors of the stores we have , are well into the business and use Discogs , Ebay and online stores to look stuff up for the customers to justify their prices. I swear no one feels cheated. In addition : I see how well they take care of and learn new collectors , young or old. That’s called business survival. Take care. /R (A at work)
It's wonderful that some stores are willing to justify their prices with proof of sales. That makes a lot more sense than just picking a price out of thin air. Lol.
Here in the US, everything is a lot more expensive these days. Thank you and take care.
Agree so much, I am not sure about the USA, but here in Australia, even the goodwill stores are pulling out the best titles and charging crazy prices for VG/G copies. Great work Melinda, love your videos.
I hate to hear that. Thank you so much! Take care.
Just another great video Melinda! Looking out for the consumer!
Thank you very much! 🤗♥️
Good stuff, Melinda! There’s a school of pricing that antique shops practice: put a ridiculously high price on every item and wait until hell freezes over for it to sell. I guess that works….sometimes. But it never made sense to me.
I won a copy of Machine Head on a local radio station summer of ‘72 and it changed my life as a rock music listener. Great album, IMHO by far their best.
Great story! You won in so many ways. 🤗♥️ Thank you and take care.
I spotted a Columbia House Disney compilation for $150 at an antique shop recently. I was absolutely gobsmacked - I thought, surely this must be some highly sought after cult favorite or something? So I looked it up on Discogs and found that NM copies go for like $5. And this copy was… well, let’s say it was an entire galaxy away from Near Mint.
I’ve also seen the Superman soundtrack for $50 and an Easybeats compilation for $80, all at different booths within this same large antique mall. I think it’s just a lot of people who are completely out of touch with and uneducated on the vinyl market, so they all think they are super valuable rarities. They’re probably the same people who Mike has talked about before, who bring their copy of Thriller into The In Groove store thinking it’s worth $200.
That could be the case. However, if they are going to have a booth at an antique store, shouldn't they at least try to figure out a fair price? 🤗 Lol. Thank you and take care.
Great Topic Melinda, really enjoy your content. I too think it's a shame that some sellers try to get such high prices for their vinyl. When I find better duplicates and resell my extra I'm happy to get medium to below medium value depending on pressing/condition. I'm always eager to help newer collectors expand their collection at fair prices. I guess if someone pulls the trigger on a $125 Zep album they must have a lot of extra cash to throw in the wind. For me, finding gems in the wild is so much of the fun. Like you, my best copies were often procured at various places at an exceptional value. I simply refuse to overpay. Keep up the great work, love your vids!!
It's very nice of you to think of the newer collectors. I have a heart for them too. I'm sure when they go to stores like the one in this video, they question whether this is a hobby they should pursue. Hopefully, they see it for what it is. Thank you and take care.
Melinda’s face in the thumbnail is the look that Mr Murphy gets when he starts bagging Kiss 😂😂
Haha! You're absolutely right. 😄 Have a fun weekend!
Melinda, If anyone uses ink or a permanent marker to write the price of a record anywhere on or inside the physical album cover, I'm just not interested period! Deal Breaker for me even if it was at a great price! I agree with you, I'll shop elsewhere! Great video and informative as always, love your channel! Thanks
I understand. No one wants someone to write on their record album. 🤔. Thank you and take care.
Today, I just visited an antique shop that I’ve never been to before and the records were ridiculously priced as well. $90 for Fleetwood Rumours, $45 for some Doobie Brothers albums, and the rest were insanely priced too! I walked out, and decided not to visit the other antique shops in the area. Each album had crazy prices and also they wrote “Firm” next to the price. That’s when you take your business to a local record store that has good prices.
Oh wow! Crazy! Thank you and take care!
And to think that I "gave away" 49 albums for equivalent of roundabout 70 US cents few years ago, including double albums of best of doors, pink Floyd live "delicate sound of thunder" and the Boston you just showed
Discogs has almost 4000 available vinyl copies of Rumours, and people were selling copies with "no cover" for $25
@@dlwseattle Rumours is much more rare with the cover missing. Hard to find in that condition, that’s why you have to pay top dollar! 😂
Great video. I like when you critique the prices. Given that vinyl collecting can cost quite a bit it's good to stay on track in terms of budgeting. Shopping around is necessary. :)
Absolutely! Thank you so much!
Same way in my area. They must think we are crazy. Just subscribed to your channel. I have been watching for some time now but just now subscribed. Love your channel and all of your info. I also enjoy when your husband joins you. keep on spinning that vinyl.
Thanks for subbing! I really appreciate it. I love when Phillip comes on with me. I never know what might come out of his mouth which makes it a lot of fun. 🤗 Have a great weekend!
My favorite Air Supply album has always been "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's Air Supply". 😝
Which means that you dislike ALL Air Supply records like I do. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz😪🥴😴
Lol. How do you come up with these? 😄😄
Not much experience with antique stores but I notice Charity shops in the UK getting there values on records by looking at the highest price on auction sites, not what the item usually sells for, which means it will never shift.
Good video highlighting it. 👍
Wow! That's disappointing to hear. They need to be better than that. Thank you and take care.
Have been away from vinyl for two to three years. Am finding 2nd hand vinyl prices seem to have gone silly here, in UK. Think better off buying new if you can.
I love your videos. You Right crazy crazy prices anywhere now.
Thank you very much! ♥️🤗
Good morning. Those prices would almost make me quit collecting vinyl. The stress of want versus need would drive me nuts. This video was eye opening. Thanks for making this video. ❤
Hey Mike! You're a smart shopper. I know you would never pay these ridiculous prices. Thank you and take care.
90% of the booths I've been to at antique stores have WAY overpriced records - worse than record stores
Definitely! Most record stores might have high ticket items but are fair in their pricing. Thank you and take care.
Even Goodwill is getting ridiculous. I guess the good news our collections are going up in value.
My local Goodwill is up to $7.29-9.29 per record, and they're crap records!
LPs at my local Goodwills were .99 each a few years ago - now they price LPs @2.99 up to $6.99 regardless of condition! That price surge also goes for those worthless junk records you see in all second hand stores!
My Goodwill has their vinyl at 8.99 AND they have a special rack with the newer vinyl they get donated from Target priced at 19.99-24.99
Yikes!@@TimBurVlogs
My Goodwill never has anything I want anyway. 🤔 That's probably a good thing. Thank you and take care.
Another super video, those prices scream bubble to me, thanks for sharing the great info. Peace.
Hey Mike! I hope you're doing well. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
I was just at an antique store this past holiday weekend. One dealer had a Jethro Tull 20th Anniversary 3 Cassette Box Set without the booklet for $90 bucks. On eBay they are $20-40 bucks with booklet complete. They will have that for a long time. Great video !
That's crazy. Cassettes are cool but that is very expensive. Thank you and take care.
Apparently Antique stores dealers are taking their queues from those MoFi prices...
Lol. It's comparing apples to oranges but I get it. 🤗
@@MelindaMurphy and cues to queues ..😊
Buyer Beware /I find all stores like that always have their vinyl overpriced. They know nothing about vinyl except that it is popular again to biy albums. Ripping people off... 😢
It would be nice if they would do their research and charge a fair price for their records. I think they would make more money with a faster turnover. Thank you and take care.
Agreed! Also they absolutely have no idea about the condition of the records. They ask for ridiculously expensive price for records not in good condition, especially for audiophile.
The records weren't in great shape at all. Lol. You're absolutely right. I apologize for the delayed response. Thank you and take care.
Antique stores was my go to place for vinyls but as you clearly explained the price gouge epidemic has spread there as well. Great video!
Unfortunately true! Thank you and take care.
Cheers!! Had a nasty cold and head congestion the last week. Wasnt even worth firing up the stereo as my head and hearing were so muffled! But tomorrow, the turntable shall spin again. Cheers! Great channel. I never chAse expensive or rare vinyl. The average new release is so costly, i tend to focus on getting more good records than finding the few rare ones i lust after.
I completely understand that. The rare records just keep getting pricier. The chances of finding them in the wild for a good deal are almost impossible these days. Thank you and take care.
Great video. I completely agree with your feelings on the topic. It's not just antique shops. Seems most places which sell records are trying to cash in on the craze. My Wife and I have pretty much stopped going out record hunting just because we know the prices will be ridiculous. I love the renewed interest in the format, but I really can't stand the greed that has come along with it.
I agree with you. There are some record stores out there that are reasonable but I find antique stores are no longer worth my time. Thank you and take care.
As a tourist from the U.K, I remember going 15-20 years ago to the 1 dollar box on there front porch at ShangriLa Records in Memphis and finding some bargains. Some great albums inside Shangri-La of course. The coolest place on earth to buy your Big Star & Alex Chilton albums/CDs from!
That's wonderful. I miss digging through dollar bins. They are now $10 bins. 😳 Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy I found a Jimmy Lee Swaggart album in the 1 dollar bucket at Shangri-La Records on Madison Avenue. I remember seeing the Staff visibly recoiling, when I put the album on their counter to pay for it! Being a Jerry Lee fan, I brought the album for a real collector in the U.K.
I have not went to the antique stores for a while but I do remember the last one I started looking through a dealers records and they had a 70's press of Aerosmith Rocks for $100 and I almost fell over....that used to be a $5 record. OK, I could see $15 if it was absolutely mint...but $100. I didn't even look that much further through the records because they were all fairly common and had similar prices. Someone was trying cash in! Although at the same store the same day in another booth I found a couple nice records for $2 to $3 each so there can still be some bargains to be had. I hope when the time comes to sell my records I can price them reasonably! Great video and take care!
Yes, not all antique stores are crazy. Lol. It's been a long time since I have found a good deal but I don't doubt that others are finding them. Thank you and take care.
The only “ rare “ Aerosmith record to look for is the 1973 first pressing before they changed the cover and added “featuring Dream On “.
You are so right Melinda. My wife and I were just discussing this recently. The whole reason we got back into vinyl about 12 years ago was because we found a stack of great records at an antique store for $2-$3 a piece. Fast forward to this summer and we’re finding the same records for $$25-$30! Fortunately the independent record stores are still fairly reasonable. It is cheaper to buy brand new a lot of times!
I agree, most record stores are still pretty fair with their prices. A good reissue can be a better option over an expensive original. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda, Great subject for this topic has been the buzz for vinyl records and they tend to be going for higher prices especially the early first pressings usually from $30-$75 depends on condition mostly on used records and thanks for doing this video.
I agree. Originals have been increasing in prices dramatically. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphythank you and same to
You are right on - on this topic. During our travels to visit family in Texas and elsewhere, we've found that record stores, particularly 'antique stores,' are wildly and sometime astronomically over priced. It's more than discouraging, it pisses us off.
It's ridiculous! I completely agree! Thank you and take care.
I saw Air Supply live in concert back in August. They were fantastic such a great show! Going to see The Eagles/Steely Dan Thursday and Squeeze/Psychedelic Furs Friday at Radio City.
Wow! What a line up of fantastic shows. I would love to see Air Supply. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Love your videos, Melinda. A little something that happened over Labor Day Weekend. Small record store in North Hollywood, CA. It had a sale of 30% off all box sets. So happy I only paid $385. What was it you may ask? The Rolling Stones in Mono!! 😃
Oh wow! Congratulations! That is such a cool box set. ♥️🤗 I hope you are loving it. What a great sale. Thank you and take care.
I am lucky to have two antique store booths in my area that have fantastic prices, like less than $10 for most records. There are about 6 other stores that I feel are overpriced and avoid, but not as pricey as your finds. Those sellers must be checking the highest sold price hoping for the best. I don't bother going back to places that write on the sleeves or stick permanent stickers on them. Happy record searching to you!
I'm glad you still have a good place to shop that has fair prices. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
You are correct, antique stores and other vintage stores have jumped on the "Records are Back" bandwagon. I've had a few of these store owners buy from me when I have my $3-$5 record sales. I then see them priced at $10-$20 when they post them on the local FB market place or I stop in just to see what they marked them too. It's crazy but their crazy prices keep people coming to me to buy stuff here where I live. Thanks for the video and enjoy the music and the hobby.
Lol. It's good for your business. 😀 Sweet! Thank you and take care.
Love your avatar photo for this video Melinda. 😆
Haha! Thank you very much! 😄
Hi Melinda. Yes the same problem exists in Australia too. In some antique stores all records are $50 plus.
That's crazy! 😳 Thank you and take care.
I love Lamps at Antique Stores. Also Green Shag Carpet.
Totally agree . Prices are way to high . I have noticed that record stores used prices have jumped up as well .
The prices are higher everywhere but these are extreme examples of what antique stores are doing these days. So disappointing. Thank you and take care.
Gold Rush 8-track!!! 😍 (Also: great clip. Lol)
That was given to me as a gift from a viewer. ♥️ Thank you!
Same store where I bought my UK Track of Who's Next!
Good video! I never, and I mean never buy records from antique stores any more. In my experience they usually overpriced and condition is usually poor to middling. Keep up the good work!
It makes me sad. I used to find cool records at antique stores all of the time. Those days are over. Thank you and take care.
A few years ago I bought a bin of about 75 albums at a garage sale with everything from AC/DC, Elton John, Pink Floyd, several Led Zeppelin, Yes, Deep Purple and many more greats. I paid $35 for the whole bin. Talk about a deal! I wish I could find something like that again.
Wow! That was the deal of a lifetime. So incredible!!! 🔥♥️ Thank you and take care.
Back in the days, I always carried the " Goldmine record price guide with me to have an indication. Before internet.
Those were the days. That was probably a more accurate way to check the price of records. Phones and Discogs have changed everything. Thank you and have a great weekend.
Good feature Melinda!
Same this side of the Atlantic too many stall holders chancing on these prices
We simply have to walk away.....no trade and the prices will drop
That's what I am hoping will happen. That's the only way to keep the prices manageable. Thank you and take care.
Wow,l all any dealer or seller has to do is get on any streaming platform to check out prices that others are getting or attempting to get. Great video Melinda.
I agree! It isn't very hard to get a price that is within the realm of reality. Lol. Thank you and take care.
Another excellent video, Melinda! I've heard from another UA-cam reviewer of a Memphis area antiques store asking ridiculous prices for records. It seems as though you may stumbled into that same shop, or perhaps all shops in/around Memphis have inflated prices. (?) I would have to rely on the observations of a Memphis area buyer/collector who gets around town to determine that. Thankfully, living in Southern California with an abundance of record stores / swap meets, etc., I don't need Memphis stores for anything.
This was the only store near Memphis that we had time to go to. I'm sure others have noticed their high prices vinyl. Lol. 😀 Thank you and take care.
You are correct Melinda! Antique dealers have either lost their minds or are super greedy! I had to deal with that same thing with an antique store here in my hometown! I had to teach the owner about Discogs, and how to identify each pressing! Are used to go in there and get an arm full and sit in front of the cash register and go through all my Discogs and tell her what I would pay for it! It was never priced properly! Everything was always over priced! I think it would do most dealers good to know where to find the real numbers and what their stuff is valued and also condition issues! Great topic and video!
I agree. It would be nice if they had some knowledge about the value before they price their records. Thank you and take care.
Wow! guess I will keep looking at the swap meet. I have fun. And clean the ones I pick up.
Having fun is what matters the most. Thank you and take care.
I'm like you: I love some sweet Synth / Keyboard. I enjoyed hearing your perspective & great video! Excellent point about the crazy prices!, paces like that are a joke! The Record Stores I've worked at, we priced albums to sell! Cool Bowie, Deep Purple vinyl! I've got Black Star by David Bowie & some Deep Purple featured on some Vinyl Videos also...
Black Star, Let's Dance, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust & Diamond Dogs are my favorite Bowie albums. Prolly A Thousand Dollars at 'ol Antique Store!
@@LeeLand-SqueeTis People would try to sell vinyl for big bucks, to us working at a Record Store! They would say, it's "Hendrix or Beatles" we would have to reply "yup they sold 4 million of those!" Tho we did give fair value...
I'm glad you have worked where the prices are fair. I still need the Black Star album. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy that album is an amazing gift to his fans! An incredible timeless masterpiece! Got to see him on Earthling Tour! 🌎 ✴️ 🎶
Had the same experience this past weekend. Outrageous prices
It's ridiculous. 😳 I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you and take care.
About 8 years ago, I found a very small town second hand shop that didn't specialize in records but they always kept a room full. They priced everything between .50 cents and $1. I racked up over half my collection from this magical spot. The Clash London Calling, hype sticker double vinyl sealed, $1. Rolling Stones Some Girls og, .50 cents. Countless 80's classics, 70's rock, Bowie, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, etc, etc. The place closed a couple years ago, but I'm eternally grateful. These days I typically just order a new release on occasion to keep the collection fresh. But it's all getting overpriced for sure. Great video!
Wow! You must have been pinching yourself. 😀 Thank you and take care.
yehsame here but mostly cw blugrass for 3 i got clash sandanista reissue just vinly wipes side one no scratches like 4 5 years agp then last year were all gone manynot good condition but guess someone though they could clean turnover for money
I sympathize. Part of it is seasonality. During the summer months (tourist season) antique stores tend to overprice their merch. There is a local shop where I found some great deals, like Steely Dan's Katy Lied for $10. Went back over the summer and everything was ridiculous. Yeah, Machine Head deserves to be a better condition copy. Great record. Oh, also like the Zombies T Shirt!
I definitely need to upgrade my Machine Head album. Thank you for the compliment. Take care.
Queen Hot Space "$85 Firm" What a joke! Great video. I'm sure Philip was amused too...
Haha! Yes, he was certainly amused. 😄
People that shop antique stores generally have money and most of them are not record collectors but they will buy for their kids or nieces or nephews and they wouldn't know what a Japanese pressing is worth so the dealer makes out and let's us all not forget that the artists do NOT receive royalties from used records so that money goes straight to the dealer! I would imagine a lot of these antique shops are owned in chains like the old record stores so those cheap buys are history - Great video Melinda and I just LOVE the way you said "Zenyatta Mondatta"!❤
Very true! They may have found success and those records may have sold to the type of person you are describing. I just hate to see records at those crazy prices.
I sure hope I pronounced that album correctly. The Police had some weird album titles. Lol. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
There was a record vendor at my local antique store that would price $12-15 records at like 30-40. And they weren’t even cleaned or graded. I’m not surprised that vendor is no longer at that shop. Saves me a stop on my weekly record hunt.
With prices like that, they can't last long. 😳 I hope they learned something from that. Thank you and take care.
Well I didn't expect to discuss dog anatomy with you today Melinda😁 you know when I see a price like that on a record I can't help but feel someone is lurking somewhere close by with fangs..
You never know what might be discussed on my channel. Lol. The people needed to know about that copy of Diamond Dogs. 😄
It does give me the feeling I'm being pinked too. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda. I love your channel. I was in an antique shop in Southern Ontario, they had boxes of vinyl, no sleeves and in the worst condition for $25 per vinyl. NOT!!!!!
The next week I was in another shop. They had entire Bay City Rollers discography in mint condition for $10 each. SCORE!!!!
I'm glad you were able to get those Bay City Rollers records in good shape. 🤗♥️ Thank you and take care.
I live in an area with an unusual amount of antique stores and this is a phenomena that happened everywhere almost overnight. Shops and booths that never had records before suddenly popped up with crates of junk with outrageous prices. It won't last forever, since they'll realize fairly quickly that nobody is buying them.
And then usually what happens is that they get mad when they can’t get their “suckers” to pay their prices, and they take everything they have to a remote dumpster. This is fact, I’ve asked what happened to their records and they just angrily growl “we ain’t carrying ‘em anymore, no one buys ‘em”.😂
I hope that's the case. My fear is that people are buying them 😳 Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda..great topic..i am even finding high prices at thift stores where they get their records from free donations..the antique dealers are probably trying to sell on line as well….wow..89.50 for Diamond Dogs..I will sell you my OG for 87.00..lol..those prices are out to lunch..great video👍❤glen
I agree. Lol. These prices were way off the mark but unfortunately I am seeing this in a lot of antique stores. Thank you and enjoy your weekend.
Melinda, you're a collector after my own heart and I feel your pain. It's getting harder to find the used audiophile labels we both like in the wild for a reasonable price, but, it's not impossible. I recently found a Mobile Fidelity Elvis Costello Punch the Clock in NM condition for $35 at a local Austin record store, it's DISCOGS median is $53, so they are out there. I guess it just takes luck and patience.
That was a great deal. ♥️🤗 I'm glad you are finding some cool records. Thank you and take care.
Hi 👋 Australian band Air Supply were popular here in New Zealand. I like their song from 1976 called Love and other Bruises. Also their 1980 hit All out of Love.
I like a lot of their songs. My mom listened to a lot of Air Supply growing up. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Totally agree!😎👍👏
Thank you! 🤗♥️
Wow I can’t imagine
It's crazy! Take care. 🤗♥️
I've been seeing some outrageous pricing on records at garage sales lately...I think a lot of people are seeing news stories about the popularity of vinyl and thinking the old records they've had sitting around for years are now like gold.
I guess the bargains are drying up everywhere. Thank you and take care. 😀
Yes! Then there are those clickbait advertisements that will show a $10 Ted Nugent (or similar worth) album stating "YOU COULD BE RICH WITH YOUR ALBUM COLLECTION!!!". No one seemingly reads past the headline then prices accordingly...
Hey Melinda. The wife and I were at an antique mall yesterday and I did buy some records (which I'm posting a video for) but I did notice that there were some vendors with ridiculous pricing.
I will have to look up your video and see what you found. Btw, I love your Livestreams when I am able to watch them. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy oh gee thanks Melinda. That’s flattering. We do our best to be entertaining if not educational. Often we fail at both.
Help by the beatles is a amazing album I got to get that album on cd and vinyl I stream that album last year I got 4 beatles albums on vinyl I love 2 album covers of steely dan and led zeppelin I never heard those albums I got to check them out. It's crazy how vinyl records prices get bananas because vinyl records are on the spotlight if vinyl records wasn't on the spotlight if would've been lower prices at this point but it's the highlight of music's physical media my experience there are high prices of records and also there's are lower prices of records too I can definitely relate Melinda. This Friday I'm going to go vinyl shopping around my way I love taking time because is the best experience looking through vinyl records it's like a little kid in a candy shop great video Melinda thanks and have a blessed day likes up allways
Help is a fantastic album. ♥️ I agree, being in record shops is like being a kid in a candy store. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
Yes Antique prices :) our local Half Priced books as well. I asked the person pricing there how they priced. Usually it was the upper end of what it has sold for. “What’s grading?”
Exactly! They aren't properly grading or pricing their records. It's crazy. Thank you and have a great week!
The shops near me in NH all have raised prices but only one booth is priced like your examples. The rest are priced around median pricing. Definitely has risen though. Even the goodwill shops in the area went up. Lol
In my experience, it's either decent records at crazy high prices or beat up records for $1. There's no in between. If you have some good stores where you live, support them. They deserve to be rewarded . Thank you and take care.
Those prices are nuts!
Definitely!
I saw the same thing here in Pennsylvania scratch records for almost $20 at an antique store too
It's getting crazy. What a shame. 😳 Thank you and take care.
That's insane! At the record shop close to me, I can generally walk in with $50 & walk out with 5-6 VG-Exc condition used records & one new one ta boot!
Very nice! You are very fortunate. 😀♥️ Thank you and take care.
from my observation as a collector for 30 years, record stores tend to set their prices depending on the amount of competitors nearby. I still have Beatle records in perfect condition I bought from a store that had 3 other stores walking distance away. Some of the Beatle records cost less than $2.00.
Oh wow! Those were the days. Competition can be a good thing. Hopefully all of the stores were able to be successful. Thank you and take care.
Well here in the UK we had most of the record Shops/Stores close! We have independent Stores, second hand stores, and Charity Stores here in the UK Independent Stores are all over the place price wise but generally very good! Second hand stores prices have gone up and the condition of the records can be in poor condition! Now Charity stores yes it's a good cause but the majority have upped their prices ridiculously Oxfam leading the way trying to get maximum profit! I say stick to independent stores! Just take care with second hand stores! And Charity stores if you are willing to pay up fair enough!! The glory days of record stores long gone!! I must admit as vinyl is becoming popular again people are trying to make a fast buck!! But I agree vinyl is expensive!!
Great video Melinda!! Buyer beware!!
I'm so sorry to hear that. What a shame. 🥲 Thank you and take care.
Very good video. Your experience is the same here in Germany. Apparently, many believe that you can get rich quickly with records. They look at Discogs or Popsike without knowing how to use it properly. That's where these high prices come from. As long as there are collectors who pay any price, because the price for them does not matter, the whole madness will be much worse, unfortunately. Greetings from very sunny Germany🖖
Perfectly said. That's exactly how it goes. Thank you very much! ♥️🤗
Hello Melinda 🌞 - Many of these antique dealers are banking ( literally ) on their customers not being savvy about true values of the records. You can often have them called regarding an offer & it would be interesting to see the price come down .. way down ! Have a great day 😊
I wonder if there would be some wiggle room. The Hot Space sticker said firm on it but I don't think the others did. Thank you and take care.
Last time I was in a thrift store I found a screaming deal on a classical music box set. $30 set for $2 but there wasn’t any other records in their stock worth listening to or purchasing. Novelty records for example.
I agree that the selection in most record stores has dried up. At least you did find a great deal. Enjoy your classical music. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Great video my friend
Thank you 👍 I thought about you when I heard about the Priscilla movie. Will you watch it?
@MelindaMurphy I hate but I'm going to pass on that movie my friend lol
@@curtissimpkins I am under the impression that it shows Elvis in a bad light. I could be wrong and I hope I am.
@@MelindaMurphy i just hope that lot of fans wont see this movie i all ready hear a few or not going to see it lol
Brilliant video, being from the UK antique shops here are dreadful for records too. I've seen a Mono With The Beatles with a cigarette burn directly on Paul's eye having the asking price of £30 when really it should be in a bin. The issue is they don't know the importance of condition, they see a record and think it's valuable because of the artist. The only record shops I go to sell records based on condition and rarity, I don't mind a rarer record graded as Fair as where I buy records they grade harshly (plus I'm 24 and don't have all the funds in the world) and they still sound great but these antique stores are selling records that look to have been absolutely carved to pieces.
I agree! Most of these stores aren't particular enough about the condition of their records and charges way too much. Thank you and have a great week.
I love this vlog Melinda. I'm trying to add to my Jazz Fusion vinyl collection here in the U.K. I was at a fair on Saturday. I saw a record I was interested in. The seller was a true used car type. After he'd looked at the price online he offered it for £20.
He said it was the 1st solo album. Wrong! He said it was from his personal collection, but it had never been played. Wrong! And a NM copy was available on Discogs for £10. Research is the key here. Don't buy records that are overpriced! Thanks again Melinda.
I agree. We all need to do our best research when it comes to the value of records. Thank you and take care.
I've seen crazy prices at antique stores but found they will often make a deal if asked. I love Japanese pressings but usually will only buy if they have the obi.
These prices were so high, I would need to ask for a fifty percent discount. Lol. I like Japanese pressings too. ♥️ Thank you Harry! Take care.
I do still love the treasure hunt feel of going to second hand shops and antique stores, but like you, I'm buying a lot less due to overpricing for sure!
I still like antique stores but I no longer get excited at the thought of finding good vinyl records at decent prices. Thank you and take care.
Diamond Dogs is what hooked me on Bowie in the late 90s. Hope it gets a great remaster and release soonish
It's such a good album. He was consistently good in those early years. Thank you and take care.
Wow. Crazy prices indeed.
Yes! Hi Jason! Have a great weekend!
Hi Melinda, Your so right!!!! You would think that like you said that they would sell them much cheaper so that they would sell, but they know Vinyl is the in thing, so they get very greedy and maybe someone will pay there insane prices. They are only hurting themselves. I hope that if the prices continue to be that insanely high that people will stop buying from Antique stores. and maybe then they will drop the price, but I doubt it. It is almost always cheaper to buy a album new then used nowadays
The records aren't selling because of the price and in the meantime, it's getting handled, possibly dropped, kids playing with them. It just seems like they would price them to sell quickly. So frustrating. Thank you and take care.
I live near Winston Salem, NC and I had the opposite surprise. I was near to Hippo Records in Winston and decided to see what they had. I didn't have much time and wasn't really expecting to pick up any records. I walked in and there was a bin marked Recent Arrivals. I quickly found a copy of ELO's "Eldorado" for $13.99 Just about perfect vinyl and a very small tear on the edge if the cover. It also has the original inner sleeve. Then I saw "Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds" which is a double album for $7.99. Cover, vinyl and the included booklet were like brand new. It also has the original hype sticker. I bought them took them home, played them and they sounded excellent. If I'd had more time, I suspect I could've found a lot of great deals. It's nice to know that there are still record stores willing price records reasonably. Even more then reasonable.
That's wonderful! It's the way it should be. ♥️🤗 That makes me happy. Thank you for sharing. Take care.
One must wonder if this inflated pricing will crash? Really enjoyed watching. Thanks.
I hope it does. I want records to be affordable while at the same time I want records store owners to make a good living. I hope it can balance out for both. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.
Those prices are crazy when those records are common records just nuts. If you want to get more into deep purple check out deep purple in rock, fireball, burn, storm bringer and perfect strangers.
Thank you. I definitely want to find more Deep Purple albums. Take care. ♥️🤗
Love Fireball , sophomore year 71 !!
antique malls have always been a strange beast. i've seen some rare or unique items priced low to go and i've seen everyday common items way over priced. its crazy. sure there's some deals to be had (i know you have a bit of luck that way) but i can't imagine with the over head why anyone things its a good idea, especially when they don't move items. i know some reasons for pricing are: renting a space (per month or a long term lease) and a percentage to the business for selling your items. some shops / malls even have rules the sellers must abide by...even how a booth is decorated.
I agree. The booth costs way too much for items to just sit around. I don't understand it. I used to find cool stuff at antique stores as well but not anymore. Thank you and take care.
Ugh I hate when some store hike up album prices when the look like dollar bin finds. Again another informative and good video Melinda, thank you for bringing this to light.
It's definitely a pet peeve of mine too. Thank you and take care.
$1 bins are so 2005, they're more like $3 bins now, so not sure where you've been for the last couple of decades. I see dealers selling "$1 records" all day long for 10 to 20 dollars. Times change.
I had a German Decca of Tommy bought for a few bucks at a mall store going out of business!
Sweet! 🤗♥️
I like your videos Melinda. I have a Spanish copy of van Halen 2
Thank you very much! 🤗♥️
Everyone thinks their $15 album is worth 6X that... It's bananas.
Haha! It seems that way. Thank you and take care.
