Today, I started a 6 day course of prednisone for a pissed off nerve in my neck. If i dont take magnesium, I cant go to the bathroom and cant sleep. Im glad to know i can continue taking the Mg with the steroids. Also I had no clue NSAIDS and prednisone can cause stomach bleeding and GI distress. One S/E ive noticed on the prednisone is a major headache (I took tylenol) Also thanks for a quick recap on the S/E of hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia. Im sitting for the NCLEX in 2 days lol. There are sooo many meds I'm still scratching my head on but wish me luck!
I've been taking Magnesium Malate for several months now as I'm tapering off Prednisone. The malate form works great for me as I have Polymyositis. I take between 500 and 1000mgs per day, in divided doses.
I do take magnesium glycinate. But why does it say that there's an interaction between prednisone and magnesium glycinate? I have terrible inflammation and when I do a round of steroids I always stop taking the magnesium. Now I'm so confused!!
Great question! I checked two places and I'm not seeing this drug interaction. First was Natural Medicines Database, and it said, "No interactions found for these agents." Then I found Peacehealth.org and their site said, "Corticosteroids may increase the body’s loss of magnesium. Some doctors recommend that people taking corticosteroids for more than two weeks supplement with 300-400 mg of magnesium per day. Magnesium has also been reported to interfere with the absorption of dexamethasone."

How much magnesium should I take along with 5mg of prednisone?
300 mg or so.
I have one that's Potassium and Magnesium... Is that good too?
Both of those are depleted by prednisone so unless you have a condition where you have to be careful with potassium, then that’s a great idea.
