I just did the long breathe out whilst humming opened my eyes and my dog was staring right in my face.. so I laughed 😂 double goodness 👌🏻
What a great anecdote! I'm glad you found a canine method for tuning your vagus nerve!
I have AF. When in A&E, waiting to be diagnosed, the consultant told me to pinch my nose, strain like I wanted a poo for 10 seconds. It affects the vagus nerve and bought down my v fast heartbeat. Literally watched it on the machine dropping. 😊
Cool technique!
Beyond grateful for this!More please 😊
There's more to come! Keep an eye out for new videos every 2 weeks

Thank you Dr Kate. I had a paraganglioma kill my right side vagus nerve at the base of my brain. The tumor was removed 20 years ago. I gained 60lbs in 2-3 months and my body has never been the same. No doctor has ever been able to help me. My right vocal cord is paralyzed. I’ve had heart palpitations off and on, especially during cardio. I’ve struggled with digestion, along with a whole host of other issues. I still have my left vagus nerve which I’m sure has learned to compensate but not to the full extent. I turned 50 this year so I’m in the menopausal years and don’t know what is from menopause and what is from my issues in my nervous system. I appreciate the checklist. It’s hard to know if improving vagal tone would help when one side of the nerve is missing.
Hi, Tanya - sorry to hear about your health challenges! I do think that supporting the function of your remaining vagus nerve will still provide some benefit - and it would be worth digging into your hormones, too! I have a few other videos about my approach to hormone health so be sure to check out the library!
Wow! Thank you so much.
You're most welcome!
Excellent and informative. Thank you for your work

I got all those symptoms.
Hopefully you found the video helpful!
Thank you so much Dr, great information. I have been looking into the vagus nerve as a possible conbtributor to my inability to loose weight. I suffered a Brain aneurysm rupture 8 years ago and i know i am extremely lucky to be alive. Since then i have put on 15 kg, prob had it on for past 3 years and it will not budge. I have spoken to many Drs to ask if somehow the surgery interrupted the communication between my brain and body, but no one has been of help. I do not over eat, actually dont care if i dont eat. I am not as active as i was as depression can do that.. I started taking Berberine about 3 weeks ago... and still no sign of any weight loss. I have started so.e yoga and resistence training. I am 45 years old and reallly need to get this weight off as it really impacting my mental state now. I weight 80kg, 165cm tall. I will certainly add these practices to my routine. Thank You so much, this is the FIRST video I have seen that discussing this and I am soo happy i found it. Thank You
You're so welcome - I hope it helps! And thanks for watching!
Thank you Dr. Katie. I’ve long suspected my vagus nerve has been compromised but not very many medical professionals know when I express my symptoms. I am heavier than I have ever been with a diagnosis of Afib which seems to flare up after a meal along with heartburn. I don’t get taken seriously so I’m just trying to check out and see if it will help my symptoms. ❤
You're so welcome! Supporting the vagus nerve can help with all of those symptoms! 🧡
Convinced my afib is triggered by eating also salt a culprit -recent episode 5 days ago BPM 205, decreased in 15 mins after a bowel movement and drinking electrolytes -raising legs also .. blessings 🙏
I started working with a dietitian. 3 meals of @400 calories (nothing fried, healthy, yaddah yaddah), 2 snacks. Lost weight and was able to get off meds for heartburn/reflux
A chiropractor appt may really help you. Anything out of alignment can effect a lot of things. I go to a good one, it helps a LOT! Getting rid of all grains, sugar and starches (even potatoes) and eat meat (esp beef), eggs, a little cheese..it will get rid of things being off in the gut. Gets rid of heartburn. Taking choline would help, and get magnesium, potassium & sodium (only good salt, Realsalt is good) and only use olive or avocado oil. This greatly reduces inflammation in the body. I'm living proof.
Thank you 🇬🇧
Thanks for watching!
I actually have a Vegas nerve stimulator (VNS). It helps with epilepsy
Totally! The tech is really coming along for vagus nerve support!
What’s Vagus nerve stimulator do you use and do you think it’s helping?
My grandson has 6 different ki ds of seizures. He is now 13 but has had his VNS for more than 6yrs. His seizures went from over 90 a day to 3-7 a week. Very thankful. I have vagus nerve "episodes" which are dangerous because I have trouble breathing and can't speak during. Learned "square breathing" and it helps me get through them.
I have to wonder if this is the link to FND as well? I helped my daughter become employable again by doing somatic breathing and activities after having seizures everytime her heartrate increased slightly. I also did this with a student to increase their attendance at school. I was working on the idea that the body was already close to fight, flight, freeze, and any slight change to the body the brain would read as danger and shut them down. At anyrate i had success with both. You are amazing. Thank you for explaining so well.
That's such an interesting observation - given how important vagal tone is to dozens of body systems, how could there not be a link? Thanks so much for using your insights to help others 🧡 You're making the world a better place for all of us!
GLP-1 Ozempic is how this whole thing started. It shut down my digestion. That was 2019, I’ve been sick ever since
I'm so sorry to hear that!
I developed Gastroparesis from Ozempic. I now have difficulty digesting fresh fruits and vegetables. And I didn't lose any weight. So now i juice and consume smoothies to get my daily dose of fruits and veggies. I pray you find care for a better quality of life
I have been interested in taking berberine for years, but I can't swallow large pills. Recently I found dried barberries (unsweetened) on Amazon. Knowing that berberine comes from barberries, I bought some hoping i might be able to get some benefits of berberine. I've been adding about a tablespoon of them each day to my morning smoothie and they're quite good!
Am I getting any berberine benefits from this? Do I need to use more than a tablespoon? Or am i wasting money with this idea?
ANY advice you can give is greatly appreciated 🙏
This is a tough one because the research is based on berberine extract, not barberries. I don't think it's hurting you to eat them! Most berries are high in antioxidants and polyphenols, which also have health benefits - but you're likely not getting the full benefits in terms of berberine itself.
Soooo interesting. Just had a naturopathic dr tell me that my body overheating was due to aging. 69. She’s not my dr since then ❤😅
Oh, brother - the "aging" explanation 😆
Have you seen Wallenberg syndrome patients (brainstem stroke usually from vertebral or carotid artery dissection) and seen impact to vagus nerve?
I have not, sorry!
Dr Kate, I’m in counseling for CPTSD, have Sjogren’s, Chari I Malformation (brain herniated again after decompression, too dangerous for another surgery), and was recently diagnosed with VLS and EGLS. My vagus nerve has been under attack since birth. I’m trying out myofascial massage tomorrow in an effort to release what’s stuck. Any suggestions how to get my vagus nerve in check with constant pressure on my cervical spinal cord? Thanks.

Where do you go for the therapy you mentioned…thanks
I’m definitely stuck in sympathetic mode. I’ve got fibromyalgia. I had to start on an ARB and a beta blocker to lower my heart rate and blood pressure, because my resting rate was 110-130.
I'm sorry you're going through this! Hopefully some of these strategies will prove helpful 🧡
What if your vagus nerve was severed during Billroth to surgery for peptic ulcer disease?
It all depends on where it was severed and which branches are still intact!
I never heard of the vagus nerve until I started researching why I would sneeze when my stomach would get upset. And the sneeze would actually relieve my upset stomach. I found out it had to do with the vagus nerve. I thought I was completely weird, but found out that others have this, too. 😊
Totally! So cool when the science "clicks"
Cool. I didn’t know this
Do the devices like Pulsetto and Truvaga add any benefit?
Unfortunately I don't know anything about these devices - sorry!
What’s your opinion on Berberine? Is it safe? Side effects to watch out for?
I've got a video about Berberine! Here ya go: ua-cam.com/video/CtCLyZgEY2c/v-deo.html
I feel nauseous when I take Berberine.
Do you by chance have a pressure point that would stimulate the nerve?
I don't know of one offhand, but it would be cool to look into!
My HRV (my heart rate variability) rose double after quitting alcohol. Thank the good Lord, I now sleep like a champ, memory’s improved, muscle, strength & energy improved, emotional regulation improved, can swallow pills, nose stopped cracking b/c allergy & constant clear drip cleared up, …
Love to hear it!
Your heart rate was suppressed from alcohol and over time, adjusted by speeding up to compensate for the alcohol suppressing it. Once alcohol is gone, the heart rate runs at its current speed until it can reset to a normal rate. The issues with alcohol withdrawal are fast, dangerous heart rate; increased breathing rate; high temperature; and high blood pressure. These can lead to seizures or stroke during withdrawal. Glad you were able to quit.
Hello Dr. Kate ...my gastro doctor suggested I speak with my endocrinologist about getting on Ozempic or Monjauro to lose weight, due to my advanced fatty liver disease and it could also help with my Type 2 diabetes. But, I recall seeing a video about the pro's and cons of these drugs and there were more cons than pro's. My niece who was taking Monjauro just recently suffered pancreatitis, so I am very reluctant to start it, especially with liver disease and Crohn's disease. I would appreciate your opinion on it. Thanks so much!
I talk all about these types of drugs in this video: ua-cam.com/video/NVEOQF5S-W4/v-deo.html
@@DrKateLyzengaDean thanks so much, Dr. Kate!
Have you been evaluated for MALS?
Can Berberine be used in conjunction with Trizepatide?
Yes - as long as you're monitoring your blood sugars to make sure you don't drop too low!
@@DrKateLyzengaDean thank you!
I haven't tried this and am struggling with trying to lose belly fat . 5' tall, age 72, waist 38", hips 34" bust 41" , weight 127 lbs. I shoot for 120 grams protein each day, 10 g. or less of carbs per day , and fat from butter, meat and eggs. I've been stuck here for over 1 year. Walk and strength train at the gym 2 times per week on average. Praying that this will produce some positive results. My HRV, tracked with Fitbit watch, runs between 34 and 55 milliseconds, the nights I don't sleep well it can be considerably lower.
Belly fat can be tough! Hope this helps!
Getting off all wheat helped me lose belly fat..a slow process, but lost 30 pounds since going on keto as well.
Our bodies adapt to the new ‘normal’, mix it up a little, like increase your carbs
No carbs!
Humans can't live without carbohydrates....we literally need them to survive....the key is finding the right balance.
I don't see where to get the show notes. Thank you

How do PPI meds affect the vagus nerve?
In many ways! They alter the pH of the stomach, which changes your ability to digest and absorb foods, which changes the microbiome in your gut which feeds back to your brain via the vagus nerve (that's just one way). Long-term PPI use has lots of potentially problematic consequences.
@@DrKateLyzengaDean When deciding on topics for videos, please considering creating one on PPIs, long term use of PPIs, as well as a video on how gallbladder removal all affect the vagus nerve.
@DrKateLyzengaDean I just weaned myself off from PPIs in April because my gastroenterologist had me on them for almost 10 years. I did a lot of research and found out how bad they are...but I'm having bad rebound reflux/heartburn which starts when I lie down in bed at night. Even though I've drastically modified my diet. Will this affect my vagus nerve? I also had issues with my vagus nerve as a teenager and my doctor at the time told me to take Axid, which I only took a couple of times, fortunately.
After 5 years of strict carnivore, my gut is destroyed. My mucosal lining is all but gone, due to the micro biome having to eat it since I gave it zero fiber for 5 years. What a disaster. In my recovery, I did take akkermansia but since I have such a feeble mucosal lining, it didn’t help much. What else can be done to replace the mucosal lining?
Absolutely - polyphenols are a good option. You can see my favorite mucosal-layer, Akkermansia-supporting products here: www.drkateld.com/akkermansia-boosters
@@DrKateLyzengaDean Thanks Dr. Kate, but I am done with supplements. They don’t work. What sealed & healed my gut was real foods-collagen & glycine rich meat broths and beans. I am eating all kinds of polyphenols now and will continue to do so. I only eat God’s foods, no sugar and no man-made garbage foods including pastas/breads etc. Thank you for your response!
I was yhinner than before i had sleeve surgery .my vegas nerve is so upset
They now want me on ozempic .i canteat nor get a good nights sleep.im.nervous.i have ptsd from a rekationship.its awful
I'm sorry you're struggling! Hopefully you found some of the strategies in the video useful!
Don’t take Ozempic these drugs are horrible. I’m type 2 diabetic and I took Trulicity, and Munjaro. I lost my Gallbladder and was so sick I couldn’t eat. I was throwing up, constant diarrhea. Ozempic is the same type of drug. If you decide to take it, do not leave the house without a plastic bag with clean underwear, clean pants, wipes, and Gatorade. Good luck.
In 2023, I would get sick no matter what I ate; after just a few bites I experienced extreme nausea or I couldn't hold the food down at all. I lost 30 pounds in 2 months. After several months of a variety of tests, I was diagnosed with gastro paresis; a condition of a damaged Vagus Nerve. In my case, according to my doctors, the damage is most likely linked to my having Parkinson's Disease.
I'm sorry to hear about your struggle - vagus nerve support can absolutely help with gastroparesis!
Have you been evaluated for MALS?look up MALS foundation support group on you tube and begin learning what it is …hope this helps..
I tried beberine for my diabetes but experienced terrible stomach pains and diarrhoea
Sometimes Berberine interacts with the gut microbiome - causing discomfort or changes in bathroom habits. Quality and dose of supplementation matters quite a bit as well!
Thank you for your answer! I wish there were some way to take berberine without having to swallow horse pills 😒
The product I recommend comes in standard capsule size (not very big) - but you could always try opening it up and mixing with something to mask the taste!
I use liquid berberine. The brand I use is made by
Bunkka, and is 1500 mg. Hope this helps.
Berberine caused me heart palpitations at night. Once I finished and decided to take a break the palpitations stopped. Doesn’t mean it affects everyone the same as me. I’m thinking of trying dihydroberberine (super Berberine) next. Also I heard you need less of it than Berberine. What is your take on it? Thanks!
Just did a video on it 👍🏼 - ua-cam.com/video/1SX-DNuZIwg/v-deo.html
I get nauseated from pain. Could that be a vagus nerve thing?
Absolutely!
I am allergic to eggs and haven’t eaten egg for 20 years. Does that mean I could have choline deficiency? 1;28
It's certainly possible!
i am 84 years and can't count the number of doctors I have seen you said doctor would mention NEVER NEVER I know what it is I am an RN
I'm sorry - I don't understand your question 🤷🏼♀️
I listen to Brown noise or green noise when trying to sleep. If you don't sleep well you're going to eat more.
I also like ambient noise for sleep!
