This was very educational. I like my evening wine, a glass or two with dinner, and am starting month 3 of a 12 month prednisone regimen for PMR. After seeing this video I am going to quit drinking until some time after my prednisone therapy is done. I have not noticed any changes since starting the drug therapy other than getting my appetite back and getting some hot flashes and sleep disruptions. The latter was an issue anyway. I actually feel 10 years younger since starting therapy and have been way more active now that I'm not in constant pain. I am deathly afraid of osteoporosis.
Interesting doctors prescribing short term prednisone treatment don't tell you any of the potential side effects or to not drink alcohol while taking it. I have been prescribed prednisone a few times, most recently a 20mg 5 day course for a month long URI I couldn't kick. Got a 3 day ABX and a 5 day prednisone prescription. Not a single word from the prescribing doctor about side effects or alcohol. I am now experiencing HTN, facial edema, and muscle weakness. I have to sit down and rest several times while doing housework - just vacuuming, mopping, cleaning the bathroom leaves me fatigued and sweating so profusely my shirt is wet and my hair is so wet it's dripping. When I go for my walks now it's extremely difficult to get through 20-30 minutes of slow walking. I have to really push myself to do it and then I'm exhausted. I hope all of this resolves soon. I've been off prednisone for about 3 weeks now.
Love your videos, Dr. Magen and I wish I would stop suffering so much. I'm waiting for ZONE vitamins-pills from your website and praying that it'll help. I did everything "right" when I was on prednisone and STILL experiencing all side effects you can imagine. Off the pred for 2 months and I look horrible and feel terrible 😞

I started a 4mg 6 days treatment Prednisone (82mg in total) today (Wednesday) and I have an event on Friday where I would be drinking. I drink like once every month and I’m not planning to drink after that. Do you think there is a big risk for a short and low dosage treatment if I drink just once? Thanks!
Hi Megan, that is great info to know. Im just wondering about caffeine particularly Coffee and prednisolone. Does caffeine do the same thing with the HPA axis? I have found that I used to use caffeine to prop myself up particularly in the afternoons at work but now im on predisone coffee or the thought of coffee makes me feel nauseated?
Great presentation. I have a close friend who is mid 60s , functioning alcoholic and in major denial. He Has been taking prednisone for at least 8 months, drinking a lot of alcohol with it on a daily basis. Ive tried to help this person but i get attacked in the process. Im at my wits end. I dont know if i should notify their family members or just stay out of it. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
That’s a tough situation. Alcohol addiction is so complicated. It sounds like you have tried. Sometimes we can tell people until we are blue in the face and it won’t change anything. Sometimes only their own motivation is what can change. I’d just make it clear that you are there for this person when they are ready.
@@PrednisonePharmacist just wanted to say thank you for responding. He came home and told me the dr didnt want to keep him on it forever , said he could get addicted. he had a hard time at pharmacy.i believe he is starting to withdrawl ( he is acting terrible!!) I heard that w/d from that can be bad and last a very long time. He is not looking to change imo, sad
@@hapilee5844 yes it will. Alcohol and Prednisone will make you feel and look very bloated for days. Even when you're done taking pred it is still in your system. Unfortunately 😕 gosh, I miss my cold beer....
I cant really find any info on how many days after stopping to wait before drinking. I google this and hardly find anything. I was only on it 6 days. Haven't used it in 3 days. Does that seem like an okay window to drink some wine after stopping?
If I only took two prednisone early today, my first day, Is it ok if I drink (more than moderation) tonight? Friends wedding.... I plan to not drink the rest of the 1 week steroid course
I just took prednisone and watching this trying to stop myself from drinking while taking it but it didn't work for me. Just add a chunk of lemon in my Corona Extra which made it healthy.
The day after may be a bit too soon. I'd give your adrenal glands longer than that to recover before zapping them with alcohol. Give yourself a few days to see how you feel, whether you have energy to wake up in the morning and last through the day to see if your adrenals have recovered first.

This brought closure to me - my husband's prednisone, inhaler and alcohol abuse caused him to have a fatal asthma attack.

I’m on a 6 day course of 5 mg prednisone but I drink 24 ounces of alcohol a day. I drink 4% alcohol in a tall. I won’t die right?

You will not die but immediately get a huge belly because the combination will make you extra bloted...even a tiny sip.😢

That’s a risky choice.
Do you use Nutranize Zone when you are endogenously stressed?
I use it to recover from prednisone. It might help cope but I’ve never had anyone else use it for that purpose yet.

Can i drink alchohol once while on a steroid course now its been 8 days while i take steroid tablets bilovas, wyslone, pantoprazole
Good question. Probably if it’s been more than a week... but there are so many factors it’s best to discuss with your doctor.
