I was like: "This guy is so next level, I don't even understand why he trades his brick away" 20 seconds later: "Oh wait... I traded my brick away - Red can we undo the trade I didn't mean to do that!" LMAO
9:33 Hold for a city: NO BRAINER. The port strategy you chose NEEDS high production. Your NUMBER ONE priority is to get those two initial towns to city up, first the wheat, then the other one. If you do, you'll become a monster. If you don't, you'll be behind as everyone already has a city except red who is close to making the longest road.
I like what you said about pacing at the end. Someone always appears too threatening early and gets targeted by everyone. Then you sneak in there with dev cards and take them by surprise.
9:34 I would hold for the city. 1) You're behind on production, with both blue and black already having cities and strong ports (or in black's case, soon to have one). 2) You expended all that effort to get the ore for a city. If you break up your 3 ore now, getting another ore by trade might be hard (given that it's rare and mostly monopolized by blue). In comparison, if you hold for a city there's an 80% chance that the missing wheat will sprout by your next turn. 3) What are you drawing for? Road building is useless, and nobody else has entered the army race yet. Is it that important to get the first Knight?
9:40 I’d hold for a city because you already have the 3 ore, which is by far the hardest part for you. Any 5/8/10 would lead to a city for you, plus you’re not currently blocked (and no one has a knight either) and you’re only at 5 cards
I love how they basically say sorry for opposing moves and maintain a very chill atmosphere. That's the opposite of gameplay with friends: one will eventually get fucked at early game and get angry with it
I watched a video where you broke down initial settlement placement and really enjoyed it. As a beginner I struggle with this. I'd love to see a whole series of those types of videos.
The getting the 9 brick which is the best brick in the game allows me to get some very good trades. I didn’t think it would be too hard to get to the wheat port with the 9 brick, so there’s no rush to go get a free road on the 9-10-11. Lastly, the double sheep is pretty good paired with the wheat port for buying dev cards.
To add on what dylon said, with the 5910 it's easier to road settle, in contrast with the 91011 double road settle. Also more production(worst case you can pad some trades with extra sheep).
Hi Dylighted! Once again, great video!!! But where do you play Catan online? I tried it on Steam but there is only the standart map! Thanks for the help!
Hey DyLighted, thanks for posting again! Remember that game you played on stream against those (sometime aggro) table talkers? I think it would be interesting content for you to make a video about people's tells from table talking using your catan/poker experience.
I would go for the dev card. When you city up on 10/5/8 you become a huge target. I like the protection of a dev card. PLUS all the dev cards are useful: Road building makes the next settlement spot waay easier, Year of plenty almost guarantees a city next turn, monopoly is the most overpowered thing you can do in the game and knights are protection for the city and a win condition. Sure a VP isn't great, but there's a low chance you get it, and I can see this set-up struggling for that 10th VP. TLDR; A city makes you a huge threat and target, whereas a dev card keeps your options open.
I think the city makes you less of a target bc half that table already have city's. Also it becomes very difficult to completely block you if you build a city bc your still producing quite a bit of wheat on the other tiles
you dont need protection from knights though, you have 3 good numbers you city up, you need the production, because the value of your production in a port strat is shit. The wheat is like .5 of a card for you. so the only way to keep up with the others is by more production, so if you get one of your numbers you wanna get the most ressources. Like we can list the most likely values of the cards for this setup. Wheat is 0.5 card Brick is 1 card sheep is roughly 1 card. Wood is 2/4 cards. Ore is 2/4 cards. if you dont use the ore you got for a discount (like 1 brick or something because of another human player) you are throwing away 2 cards you need to get, or even more. you need to get that city so you have enough wheat to counterbalance the value drop because you lack the ore. Also from what do you wanna defend yourself against. From a knight on the 8? while 2 other numbers give you a wood or an ore. like if we translate the cards to rolls you basically need less numbers to roll for you if you get a city, also if your 8 is blocked, you still have 2 other numbers that give you a free ressource, in a way you are pretty much unblockable because you got the city. In a way, with the city you are able to compete with the others because you now have access to all ressources without too many rolls. if a 10 rolls you get a card, if an 8 rolls you get 1.5 cards. the city is just too important and not worth delaying for a useless dev card. You wont be able to buy more of them, or even a city because you wont be able to get enough cards anymore.
I like playing this game but watching this, there's so much I can learn in terms of trading, wow. I can read the board well, I never really have much trouble picking start locations, but tracking people's hands and figuring out what they want or what would piss them off is... a whole new world. Great watch! :)
9:37, wait for city, place on the wheat spot to increase weat production and Port it 2:1 for any resouces you need (mostly ore, cuz you porbably want to go for biggest army)
Pause... I think in this case you hold for the city... Port strategies depend on big production, so upgrading that 8-5-10 as quickly as possible is super important... Also blue and black already have cities up, and black is already at 4 VPs, so you won't be making yourself a big target by upgrading... You're also only at 5 cards, so no single roll can put you above 7 cards and put you at risk of 7ing out... And lastly it's very likely in 1 orbit that you'll be able to get 1 wheat to upgrade, and you really want to be using the precious ore in your hand to upgrade the 8-5-10 before buying dev cards... Once that 8-5-10 spot is a city, then you can shift to buying dev cards at a much higher rate than if it were only a settlement...
Remember me? I complained about you not keeping up with your promises...well I am back..... to tell you THANK YOU!!! So happy to see you being more consistent with posting!
I have a question. My boys and I play to influence others. For example, if I build a city and that gives me 7 or 8 points, the other players gang up on me and discuss among themselves on how to stop me. They make trades to snatch the longest road or the largest knight card. Is that ethical in this game or is this how the game is supposed to be played?
@@DyLightedCatan is it okay to point out the resources a particular player has when another player rolls a 7 and you're just influencing him to prevent him from robbing you?
great video as always! i'm really looking forward to your video on that extremely close final match, that's probably coming up at the end of this mini series! your videos got me into catan 1 or 2 months ago. this weekend, after listening to an old podcast of yours with hawkeye where you encouraged your listeners to give tournaments a go, i spontanously signed up for the latest catan community tournament. surprisingly i did really well for a newbie, advancing to the semi finals and even getting close to winning that one! i had so much fun on voice chat during those games, and playing against some very good and experienced players was amazing, because i felt like i could learn and improve a lot!
If you can get 2 or especially if you can get 3 strong numbers to feed a 3/1 port, I think it can be the strongest strategy on most boards since it gives you amazing flexibility to do what ever you want, be it dev cards, build to 10 or take road.
I'm surprised you won with so few numbers too. But I did a three resource game as well but with a 3-port and managed to win where I had good numbers for the one resource settlement.
1:24: RED knows that GREY - third player - will surely plays his second settlement DIRECT AFTER him. So expecially the first settlement of the fourth player RED with street also (as GREY has done) downwards to 4-5-10 in combination with his second settlement 11-3-6 is very adverse for him and the opposite of to be far-seeing. After GREY played his first settlement at 8-4-10 WITH the street downwards to 4-5-10 it is wasted money for RED to set his first street there and then second settlement 11-3-6. Ok, with that RED took indeed the "money" for a street (with a slim hope to get the Spot 10-5-9, because the spot 10-5-9 with a production of 11 is interesting for everybody), BUT: The spot 6-11-12 is still open, absolutely sure FOR GREY. Which strategy attempt GREY? It is easy to identify: With - at that moment - a sure sheep production of 8 and even possibility to increase to ten or even to twelve, it is advantageous for GREY to have a sheep port. Nor are there GREY wood, brick and ore. So to have this three missing resources AND certainly obtain the sheep port if GREY settled at 6-11-12, it is particularly advantageous for GREY to put his second settlement at 6-11-12. And what happened? GREY did just that, street straight to the sheep port. For others it is 1. impossible to settle at 6-4-11 and 2. uninteresting to settle at the sheep port with a production of just 5 and others have a lot less sheep than GREY. And, after the game has started, no matter how the dices will fall, GREY has one resource card of brick and one resource card of wood, so the money to buy the third street BEFORE it is the turn for RED. 1. For RED it would have been much better to settle first at 10-5-9, street downwards to 10-9, next to get the wood port, and second 6-4-11, to get two wood and an ore, ore is rare on this board, so a good commodity. 2. This approach would have given RED a total production of 21 and with different numbers, not only 19 with the double 4 !!! 3. AND: The majority of the rarest resource: Brick. 4. AND: An own possibility to get the sheep port - at that moment his sheep production is 7. 5. AND: Absolutely sure to get a second port, the wood port, which combines good with a wood production of 8. 6. AND: There is a possibility to reach the 3-8-desert spot to get some wheat. 7. AND: Important at CATAN, not only to look for the best for yourself, but also to look for possibilities to impede your opponents. In this case, RED would have destroyed good opportunities for GREY. RED, you have trashed a very good chance to win this game !!! RED, you have to learn a lot of CATAN strategy !!!

hey man a lot of people like myself started playing with a board during quarantine. i think a cool video idea could be a real life board game review, explaining thought processes of players and strategy
Always looking forward to your vids Dylighted. Whenever the notification pops up I instant watch. As with some of the other comments, it would be great for more frequent content
I often buy a dev card because there's a solid chance that you'll lose those resources anyway if someone rolls a 7 or if the play a knight card. You're also only losing 1 ore which should be relatively easy to obtain with your port or through trades.
I'm rewatching this video, and I'm really confused as to why you didn't take the 9 10 11 and point up... It gets you a free road, some more wheat (while blocking wheat from blue unless he choose the 3 8) and an option to expand to the 2 6 down the line once your port is online...
That was my thoughts exactly. Everyone else was already on sheep so it would have been easy to trade for but worthless to trade away except 4 for 1. Definitely did not need to be on two of them without a port to trade them.
50 seconds into the video and I’m already so glad UA-cam recommended you. I love playing with my friends and there is absolutely no way for us to play without someone trying to get all the wheat. Never even thought of catan online, I love this
I think that having a city on 10 5 9 would've the best option since it duplicates your chances and it won't be blocked that much cause it's a shared spot. Getting a dev card when you don't got acces to any ore would delay your game
However, he only had the wheat port . So he kinda needed the wheat production first over brick/sheep. They trade at 4:1 whereas wheat at 2:1 Also blocking a spot means nothing cause he has 2 more tiles and he wasn't a threat till later half of the vids.
I was never a fan for port strategy but hey guess top player can win with any set up😆 very entertaining to watch (even when you made mistakes haha) btw do we still have a streaming schedule? loving twitch! 😆

I often buy a dev card because there's a solid chance that you'll lose those resources anyway if someone rolls a 7 or if the play a knight card. You're also only losing 1 ore which should be relatively easy to obtain with your port or through trades.
I immediately feel like a fool! lol
Today was our last day before spring break so our whole class played Catan for two hours and I cleaned up🔥😂
I‘d hold for city, since your at 5 cards which is fine. Even though you would become a target there is still plenty of wheat for you.
Exactly! Great reasoning! Thanks for answering the quiz!
@@DyLightedCatan whatever to support my man!
50 seconds into the video and I’m already so glad UA-cam recommended you. I love playing with my friends and there is absolutely no way for us to play without someone trying to get all the wheat. Never even thought of catan online, I love this
I guessed right that you’ll hold for city! Than,a for the videos. :)
Do you ever play cak sf? Or do you not mess with catan universe
17:20 why not build a road just to have 0 cards?
do you cities and knights expansion videos?
It was entertaining watching you laugh at your own mistakes 😂
Hahaha I make a lot of mistakes when I play, especially under time pressure
What settlers is this app? Is it a desktop only?
What platform is he using to play yhr game?
Colonist.io
What software is he using to play??
Colonist.io
Allright guys, f*ck it!
Good video DyLighted
Hahaha thanks Aron!
I noticed there are some small parallels with go in Catan.
Hey Dylan could you try doing vids on the Catan expansions?
Eventually I’ll touch up on one of these!
Thx for the vid!
Thank YOU for watching!
Nice to see this game, I didn't catch this one that day! BWS new meta
Hahah OWS < BWS
There are strategies other than the longest road???????
How did you win if it’s first to ten? Cause it looks like you only have 8 points
how can i get this game?
6:00 Why not just try wheat+sheep for wood? That 2:1 port is more than worth it being one card down in a trade.
I totally agree. I was rewatching the video and wondering why I didn’t do that. Must’ve just forgot.
They trade at 4:1 whereas wheat at 2:1
Also blocking a spot means nothing cause he has 2 more tiles and he wasn't a threat till later half of the vids.
what version of catan is he playing, where service can you use to buy it steam?
colonist.io
@@claudioandres4528 thanks man, I eventually stopped being a fool and found it been settling the land since.
I was never a fan for port strategy but hey guess top player can win with any set up😆 very entertaining to watch (even when you made mistakes haha) btw do we still have a streaming schedule? loving twitch! 😆
I typically always stream on weekends and Wednesday - Friday I also stream. You should be able to see a stream schedule on my twitch.
9:38 hold for city. getting that ore was expensive, and robber is not on u.
Where can I play this
colonist.io
Where is he playing Catan on? Is that a website?
This was so much fun
Glad you enjoyed it so much!
First day telling D that we love his content
Thank you Tomas! I appreciate it ❤️
I'm gonna start Catan. Looks so much fun!
Where are you playing this game?
I use to play this game a lot with family, the actual board game + expansions, but never got the online version... heard it was extremely buggy.
That’s Catan universe not colonist.io
@@DyLightedCatan Well, maybe I'll end up playing you one day now. Loving the site.
I know I am a month late but my thought for the quiz was to hold for city to get mad wheat production now that you got the port.
