I wonder what they can do with Game of thrones board game. The shortest one Ive had so far was 2 hours 2v2. 6 free for all doesnt really go lower than 3 hours.
dude james is sooooo cool, he's such a good innocent guy, watched quite a few episodes of table top and havent seen anyone quite like him. he's a good guy.
Watching since Episode 1, when we saw this game we rushed out to our local game store to buy it. The kids are 14, 11, and 7. They all love the game and ask to play regularly, We were worried about the 7 year old not being able to get into it, he trumped that by beating everyone twice and nearly winning several other times. It really is great when we can all get together to play instead of all playing video games together and not interacting as much. We are now building our game collection.
19:11 Neil used two development cards on one turn... you can purchase as many as you want in a turn, but you can only play one development card per turn.
If TableTop season 5 ever happens, you all should revisit this game again, but this time with, like, all of the expansions. Or at least Seafarers and Cities and Knights.
I have already owned Settlers of Catan for quite some time, but I enjoy these videos so much that I still watched. Since watching this video I have picked up the 5-6 player expansion set. Haven't played the expansion yet... Hopefully it will be great!
Germanic origin, most likely. The Saxons brought Germanic heritage to Great Britain, while among Americans there are descendants of settlers (pun unintended) from other Germanic countries (Denmark, Sweden...)
You actually traded with each other? My family is far too cutthroat for that to ever be an option. Then again, most of the yelling comes from me, so I guess I can't complain.
You should try trading! (Hopefully you have in the intervening 6 years.) It makes the game a lot less reliant on pure luck. And adds a dimension of strategy that's otherwise missing.
Watched this years ago, and finally bought the game this Christmas. My family played with resource cards in front of them face up. It changed the trading dynamic, since you could see what the other players needed. It changed the robber dynamic since you could see who had a card you wanted to steal and the odds of getting it if you chose one player over another, or to try to steal a card from a player to spoil their hand. It definitely effected the monopoly card since you could see how many of each resource was out there. Re-watching this video, I can see how both ways can be fun.
There was a mistake, near 19:00 he plays a Knight then another dev card. You can only activate 1 dev card a turn! Also near 22:00, he just trades him an ore for nothing in exchange of not placing a robber there. You cannot do that since resources must be traded for other resources.
I thought there was a rule that when the thief is rolled, all players with more than 7 cards must discard some, too. But Neil totally didn't do that, and I'm pretty certain that he had upwards of 10 cards.
Eh, Gamer, they can play it how they want. It's more fun if you're allowed to give away resources, and/or bribe people. I once had a four hour game where I controlled all but one brick space on the board, and would bribe people who rolled a 7 to put it on the last free brick space.
What are the point of rules if you don't follow them? lol By all means they can play all they want, but when they keep flashing rules and stuff to make things look official then they ignore basic rules, it shows that none of them have really had a heated game of Catan before lol. People get riled up over these in close games xD
I couldn't tell if they were following the rule because they kept cutting between segments. But Wil was teaching everyone the game and from his comments he has a very rudimentary if not non-existent knowledge of the game, so I wouldn't be surprised if they messed up on this rule.
How am I just finding this now? Wil Wheaton and Neil Grayson ,two crushes I'm not ashamed to admit, playing one of my favourite games! I've found heaven.
After watching all 5 seasons of Eureka, one year after seeing this episode, I had to go back and see this again and truly appreciate the Fargo awesomeness :)
Board games i want cause of TableTop -------------- Betrayal At House On the Hill Dead of Winter Pandemic Settlers of Catan Get Bit (IK it ain't a board game but it is awsome) Last Night on Earth
+AnAverageGamer Mature “AAGamer” Tabletop made me want to buy Settlers of Catan, Forbidden Island and King of Tokio. I'm also thinking about buying Love Letter, Carcassonne, Tsuro and Stone Age.
+AnAverageGamer “AAGamer” Mature I have Betrayal at House on the Hill. We only played it once but the instructions were very choppy and poorly written so we never got to finish our game. I'm gonna have to look up a vid online and give it another shot.
LOOOL I LOVE THAT WOOD JOKE that made me literally laugh out loud. Wil always makes me enjoy watching his TableTop games cause he got me to buy games that I can immerse in once a week with my friends whom I've known since 5th grade and I'm 23 as of now.
After watching this video I gifted this game to my little brother and over the holidays we ended up playing it literally for hours with him and my sisters. It was insanely addictive and it literally was my gateway drug into board games. Thanks Wil :)
A few mistakes regarding the rules. 1. You can't give a resource card away for nothing. They may only be traded for resource cards. 2. You can only play one development card per turn.
@22:07 It's actually illegal to give cards away. I know some people do the house rules of when a robber is moved, other players bribe the person with cards to not put it on their spots, but by the rules of the game, that is not allowed. Cards must be taken by the robber or Monopoly card or spent/traded/discarded to the bank (from having more than 7 cards in your hand when a 7 is rolled.)
All one has to do to give a card away is to trade 2 cards for 1 and then trade the other two cards back. If that's legal then why not do a 1 card for 0 trade?
+Anthony Khodanian Explain what you mean when you said trade the other two back because they can only do that if they receive something for it. So no, you can't trade 1 for 0 because the rules forbid it. There is no arguing against it. If you have a house rule that allows it, fine, but I'm talking about the actual ruling.
You can't trade until all the actions regarding the roll of a 7 are completed. From www.catan.com/faqs/92?page=3 Seven and Robber - After rolling a “7,” can I still trade with another player or blackmail him before moving the robber? Trading: No. Blackmailing: Yes. On Catan, people are allowed to talk to each other at any time. Therefore, even if it is not their trade and build phase, all players are free to make offers for future bargains, and if they see fit, they may also blackmail and threaten other players. However, all this can only be put into action after the consequences of the dice roll are resolved. You can’t perform trades to reduce the number of your resources to 7 or fewer before resolving the consequences of the “7.”
I'm not entirely sure if this is a legit work around within the rules of the game (it depends on when trading is and isn't allowed), but I think what Anthony was getting at was that if the same 2 players traded twice, then they could easily simulate the 1 for 0 trade without ever trading for nothing. See the following: Players 1 has: {Card A, Card B} Player 2 has: {Card C} Player 1 trades {Card A, Card B} for {Card C} from player 2. Players 1 has: {Card C} Player 2 has: {Card A, Card B} Player 1 trades card C for card A from player 2. Players 1 has: {Card A} Player 2 has: {Card B, Card C} Effectively player 1 gave player 2 Card B for nothing.
Chris Mohamed Okay, that is legal since both players exchanged cards both times. However, they are exchanging cards. One person isn't directly giving a card for nothing. If player 2 had no cards then it could not happen. In any event, that's not even what I was originally referring to. In the video, the guy gave a card to bribe him to not place the robber on his spot. I was directly pointing to the fact that it is against the game rules to do that since he did not directly receive a card in return. Also this was brought up elsewhere, promising future cards solely as your trade is not allowed either. You can promise to trade a card you may get in a later round, but I can't say "If you give me a rock now, I'll give you a brick the next time I get it" if that was the only part of my trade.
18:49 the orange player uses two Development Cards on the same turn - a knight and a progress card - I thought you were only allowed to play one per turn?
Your video looked like so much fun that my family and just got through playing it for the first time. Thank you for introducing us to this new favorite, and for walking newbies through the rough time of learning a new game. Keep up the good work!
Will!!! I don't even know where to start... OK, I love Settlers and I'm so happy you're representin' I am a die hard Trek fan so of course your work is near and dear. I've enjoyed your work over the past several years - always a pleasure to see you pop-up. Loved your work on Eureka recently. Finally, I want to say... THIS IS GENIUS! I just stumbled onto TableTop and it's such a great idea. Great job introducing people to great board games!
So ready to play this game.. Even the Green Bay Packers are playing this game. Looks like Wil isnt the only one playing this game, but a big kudos to Wil and everyone at Tabletop & Geek & Sundry for the introduction to this game!
Why there were no discards on 7??? Hands were full of cards there, definitely someone had more than 7 cards on hands. ALSO, you cannot just GIVE resources to other players without a trade. Promises, favors are not trade.
Everyone has their house rules. All the games I've played giving cards have been allowed. The frienemies expansion gives honor points for giving away cards. To be fair I seem to be the only person to ever have fun playing that version. As far as giving away cards in the original version, I don't see how it hurts the balance of the game. I'm not sure if it's in the official rulebook or not, but when me and my friends play we do not allow more than one development card played per turn. It makes a huge difference, and everyone I know of agrees that it's for the best.
Eric Chandel It IS in the rule book, why I otherwise say it if it was just my house rules? :) In the vanilla it is also the standard rule that you may only play one development card per turn. That goes away in the C&K expansion. Why it is not allowed to give away cards? Because otherwise in the late game people can begin funding someone purely out of spite for the winner. And it makes for bad sportsmanship. So in that sense the game becomes 'unrealistic' if suddenly an prosperous empire of colonies is giving all up, just because another empire is going to build a new settlement.
I love this game! My friends and I introduced this game to one of our friends whom hasn't really played any games other then card games (deck of cards) and now it's the only game they ever want to play! Just glad that they are excited about it!
Thank you so much TableTop. Due to this game play vid I just had to rush out and buy this game for the family. Played our first match last night. Many more rounds set up for this weekend.
Thank you for playing Settlers. Your intro is going to be used anytime we have new players at our table. Bring on season 2. It could be fun to see Wil as a DM for an RPG series, long live Aeofel.
19:05 Neil uses two development card in one turn, you can only use one. At 21:51 he used a development card that he bought that same turn. You cannot use a development card on the same turn you buy it in. Also at 22:10 he takes an ore for not putting the robber on James's resource. You cannot free trade in Catan, you have to trade at least one of your resource cards with other ones. So many things are wrong with this game.
Everytime I scan past the names of the guests in this episode, I mis-read Neil Grayston as Neil deGrasse Tyson. *That* would be an EPIC TableTop episode!
My favorite part of these videos is that nobody is on their fucking phone. People are focused on the game, and it keeps moving. Protip: If you're playing a board game, pay attention. Get off your damn phone, or don't play.
I have seen this game but never have played it. I have to have this game now! It is my kind of game!! Thank you G&S Channel and TT for showing me this game!!! Keep everything going!!!
Can we get "extended gameplay" as well as the interviews? I'd love to watch these full length games. I have a 3 hour commute everyday and it sucks, but that'd help. Early thanks and happy new year!
“Whenever you roll a 7, the robber gets activated. The robber steals from you. We don’t like the robber”. *Close up of Wil’s face* “The robber’s a dick”.
I have been wanting to write this for the longest time! It is so much fun. Strategy and silly in the perfect combo, and it would be a hoot to watch Wil and a few others get into their characters, skills, and roles...
Chippps I believe you can play development cards (including knights) anywhere in your turn. Before rolling, after, even during trade ("anyone got wood?" "Yeah I do" "OK I'm robbing you."), at least in the version I got.
This is a great show! I received Settlers of Catan for Christmas. I need to have a few more people over to play (I can't wait). I will assume there will be a season two, this show deserves it and I will definitely watch (and buy more games)!
O LOL bestiality humor. i get it. Reminds me of a joke my mom told me, once... I don't wanna repeat it, but the punchline was "Yeah, but YOU picked the ugliest one!"
Settlers: the game where people make retarded jokes about wood and sheep, builds swastikas from castles and writes dirty words with roads. Great game! 8/10! Would play again.
I played this game last night for the first time. At first I thought it looked complicated and not so exciting, but by the end of the game, I was loving it! Now I want to buy one. Our game went for hours and all four of us had 9 points for quite a while! The board was full. I enjoyed your webcast! I have to get one of those games. :)
Your editors managing to fit a Settlers of Catan game into 26 minutes and 31 seconds is miraculous. They deserve a raise.
I've seen several tabletop gameplay series and this is the best presented by far.

Coming back to these videos to research games for family game night. Seems like there was a golden age for UA-cam and we’re not in it anymore.

"The robber is a dick" that caught me off guard xD

same, made me laugh way too much, for something so simply said XD
For me the intro game was Ticket to Ride and I Love it.
Last night I played this game for the first time and
it. Was. Amazing.
Its 2020 an im rewatching this series! This is still probably one of my favourite Tabltop episodes, along with Smallworld!
My favorite thing is how you can see the different styles of keeping the settlements roads etc. in their hand

Yeah I run into the same problem when it comes to Monopoly.
thats one aspect of Catan that grates with me - if you have to trade with other players you are unlikely to win ime
im very competitive but if i need to ill trade, my mom hardly ever trades when she is about to win though.
You should try trading! (Hopefully you have in the intervening 6 years.) It makes the game a lot less reliant on pure luck. And adds a dimension of strategy that's otherwise missing.

I don't see anyone counting up the cards when there's a robber and turning half in.
Isn't it supposed to happen when they have over 7 cards?
I went to the comments only to find someone saying this :D
They also buy stuff before rolling which they are not allowed to :D
I couldn't tell if they were following the rule because they kept cutting between segments. But Wil was teaching everyone the game and from his comments he has a very rudimentary if not non-existent knowledge of the game, so I wouldn't be surprised if they messed up on this rule.

+SilentAntagonist Isn't it rounded down? :O :D At least it is in the Swedish version..!

A few mistakes regarding the rules.
1. You can't give a resource card away for nothing. They may only be traded for resource cards.
2. You can only play one development card per turn.
Killian Coakley Also if you have more than 7 cards and you role a 7 you have to discard some cards away
And I don’t think you can place robber in the desert?
@@benb6527 You can. You just can't place it where it already is.
Also their statistics are wrong. Rolling a 7 has a 20% chance.
Also can't play the development card you just bought, have to wait one turn to use it.
@22:07 It's actually illegal to give cards away. Thank you so much TableTop. Due to this game play vid I just had to rush out and buy this game for the family. Played our first match last night. Many more rounds set up for this weekend.
It's funny because when we played it we basically only rolled sevens :)
Grand Theft Settler: Catan
Did you play the rule where the robber takes half of all resources if you are holding 8 or more?
Thank you for playing Settlers. Your intro is going to be used anytime we have new players at our table. Bring on season 2. It could be fun to see Wil as a DM for an RPG series, long live Aeofel.
this is one we still take out once in a while! still great!
So many things are wrong with this game.
the great thing about table games, you can change the rules how ever you want to make the games more fun ;)
True
I can't be the only one that initially thought James looks like Donnie Yen.
0:52 best explanation of Catan's rules ever
I really love this channel. Thank you Will Wheaton.
I got Catan the Swedish vertion of Settlers of Catan and played it with mom the same weekend and she loved it.
Everytime I scan past the names of the guests in this episode, I mis-read Neil Grayston as Neil deGrasse Tyson.
*That* would be an EPIC TableTop episode!
Maureen Andersen no it wouldn’t. That cartoon scientist would do absolutely nothing to enhance the game whatsoever.
My favorite part of these videos is that nobody is on their fucking phone. People are focused on the game, and it keeps moving. Protip: If you're playing a board game, pay attention. Get off your damn phone, or don't play.
They also didn't play with the fact cities give you two resources instead of one.
Brody Lister exactly
I have seen this game but never have played it. I have to have this game now! It is my kind of game!! Thank you G&S Channel and TT for showing me this game!!! Keep everything going!!!
It's nice people are still visiting this video. 😊 Although, I have to say, I wish I had the opportunity to play this game :((
Please bring table top back
+1
Also, if the robber is played and someone has over seven cards, then half of their resources is confiscated
6/36=.16667, there's a 16.67% chance to roll a 7, after rounding thats a 17% chance, how did you get 18%?
They're wrong.
Dice rolls aren’t perfectly random
I watched so many videos to try to get into the game before I played, but I just cannot get behind it to wanna play.
I've had this game for awhile now and I really loved seeing everybody play it this time!
The wheat puns, they hurt.
they are so unbreadable
Cj cathead or unwheatable
Louis Miller wheat for me I forgot all of my puns ;-;
Cj cathead they deal tons of damage, a wheaton of damage.
I have played this game more than any other games over the last few years, it rocks!
I love how building things with your extra settlements, cities and roads seems like a really universal think to do. :)
I like how none of them gave up half of their cards when a 7 was rolled
They also broke the rule that you can only use one d card per turn. 10:44 Same turn, two knights played.
I think there was a cut there.
Theres no rule for that in every version. The only common rule is you cant play one in the same turn you receive it.
I have been wanting to write this for the longest time! It is so much fun. Strategy and silly in the perfect combo, and it would be a hoot to watch Wil and a few others get into their characters, skills, and roles...
I have been trying for years to get my wife to try this game. After watching this episode she wants to play!! This is my in! Thanks guys!!
Do you REALLY have to play the knight before you roll? you cant play it after you roll? I may have been playing the game wrong this whole time... O_o
Chippps yes because you steal resources from a player you block resources from with the robber
Oh darn. Same. Now I have to read the 50 pages of rules again. :-) Thanks for the (horrible) tip JelloJames!
my rules say that you CAN but not HAVE to. it's 2015 edition
Chippps I believe you can play development cards (including knights) anywhere in your turn. Before rolling, after, even during trade ("anyone got wood?" "Yeah I do" "OK I'm robbing you."), at least in the version I got.
You cannot play two development cards on your turn. One per turn.
I always mispronounce the name of this game as "Settlers of Satan" just to piss of my Catan addict friends XD
Daniel Gilmore wow so funny and quirky
How on Earth has it been 12 years already 😱
This is a great show! I received Settlers of Catan for Christmas. I need to have a few more people over to play (I can't wait). I will assume there will be a season two, this show deserves it and I will definitely watch (and buy more games)!
This playlist is backwards
I'm looking to trade. I've got wood for sheep. Anyone else need wood for sheep?
Big Bang theory
TheGotenza That joke predates Big Bang by decades. It's as old as the game.
cyanmanta I've got sheep for days.
Big Bang theory
O LOL bestiality humor. i get it. Reminds me of a joke my mom told me, once...
I don't wanna repeat it, but the punchline was "Yeah, but YOU picked the ugliest one!"
Settlers: the game where people make retarded jokes about wood and sheep, builds swastikas from castles and writes dirty words with roads. Great game! 8/10! Would play again.
Actually, that's how a normal game of Catan normally goes, LOL
I played this game last night for the first time. At first I thought it looked complicated and not so exciting, but by the end of the game, I was loving it! Now I want to buy one. Our game went for hours and all four of us had 9 points for quite a while! The board was full. I enjoyed your webcast! I have to get one of those games. :)
so entertaining!! just got the game & reading the instruction book was a little painful. can't wait to get started. thank you!!!
