MAMAK FOOD: FAMILY Owned BAMBOO BRIYANI+ Sauced Up MEE SOTONG | PENANG, Malaysia

- Day 4!!!
My goal was to get outside the city, but as with most of my goals. That was a failure haha.
Started the day off with Chee Cheong Fun, a Chinese influenced dish composed of rice rolls and covered in sauce! Really fun to eat for a nice little snack!
Next, I went to an Uncle who has been making Curry Mee for over 40 years. His expertise and special chili paste and coconut really shines through in this bowl of curry mee.
Still out in the middle of nowhere, I went for a family run Briyani Stall that is making over 25 dishes to pile over your rice. A truly fantastic Bamboo Briyani from a family that is pouring their hearts into this dish.
Back into the city for some Mee Sotong. This stuff is what sauced up truly means. Some of the most flavor packed, saucy, fried noodles I have eaten. The food Gods were with me as I got one of the last orders before they left for Friday prayer!
Lastly, a really fun dessert to eat, putu Mayong. Rice flour squeezed into the shape of noodles and steamed. Then topped with double sugar and shredded coconut. The actual Mayong is silky smooth while the sugar and coconut help enhance the flavor and melt in your mouth qualities.

Better late than never. Sorry for the delay everybody, been on a bus with no WIFI for 19 hours.
Also, in my video I think I wrote "Putu Mayang". There are two correct ways: Putu Mayam and Putu Mayong. I seemed to have combined the both, sorry about that.

Don't be apologetic about the mis-spelling... The spirit of Malaysian food is to mix up different ingredients from various cultural influences... And despite the common names of the food that you are familiar with, each community and each locale may give the dishes a different name... For example, laksa means different dish depending on where you are... So, it's perfectly ok to mess up the names a little...
@@dennisyap2143 Hey, I really appreciate that! I just don't think anybody spells it "mayang" so I wanted to clarify for people who may want to research it more and learn more. That way they wouldn't be confused! Really appreciate your comment!
In English we called them string hoppers... the usual way is to eat with brown sugar and shredded coconut.. but it also can be eaten with curried lentils (dhall) or even any variety of curries (eg: chicken curry, fish curry).. it’s delish!
max not filming so others can sit and eat. TOP CLASS
thanks brother🙏
A real gent
Tcy.
I could have sent this in a private message but I want your fans to know, I suffer from extreme anxiety and today has been a bad one but watching your videos (even though I’ve watched them 10 times over) has really cheered me up! You make great content and your personality is so endearing.Thank you. 🙏🏼
This is the realist message ever! I cannot tell you how happy that makes me to hear that I, could bring a smile to your face. If you ever need anything feel free to message me via email, IG, or whatever you would like! Wishing you the best:)
What stand out for me in your channel is not only the colourful food adventures but also hints of your nice characters scattered here and there like what you said about filming in public places earlier, which make your video yours with some unique characters. Keep it up man, kudos!

I'm beginning to think Max is actually an Asian Dude in disguise. Never seen any foreigner feels so comfortable with that much variety of Asian cuisines let alone an Arkansan. 🎭🎭

Hi max.. Y're killing me.. With the way u eat n explain.😋😋😋😋😀😀😀😀😀😀😀I'm a penangties...yet i haven't been to the bamboo beriani 😭😭😭😭
Ahhh, I like your name haha, but it is really new from what I understand!
You are mix of Mark weins and The food ranger 😊👍👍 keep it up man
Man that Briyani looks like a killer. Also the Curry mee looks like nothing we get over here in KL. Penang is the ultimate food haven. Unbeatable!
penang, is cray cray forsure.
U eat using ur hand just like a local.. Its a good thing, many foreigners don't do that, so it's hard for them to fully enjoy local delicacies as many of them were made to be enjoy and eaten using a hand.
have to use the hands to fully enjoy. it is a must
Tourists is more accurate than foreigners
only 1% local using hand.... so what like local
So cool bro. you immersed in the culture and ate with your hands..Salute!!!!
the best way to eat
Yes it was fantabulous while watching u having bamboo byriyani...... Oops such a clean eating yaar
Maxi The way you eat with your hands, its pleasure to watch.

Fantabulous!

That banana leaf biryani spot looks amazing! So many great dishes to choose from

@@Macoi24 What's the name of the place where you ate the Biryani , Max ? I am from Penang , but left almost four decades ago to work in K L . Maybe , the place wasn't there yet .
Sooo delicious....nasi briyani...want to go try this
this one is oohhhh so good!
The bamboo biryani is something I need to search out next time I'm there. Never heard of it until now!
Yeah! There is a really famous bamboo briyani restaurant from Klang. They even have a branch in JB, but like I said, this one is family owned!
Fantabulous 😊😊😊

Love your channel! I managed to make it to the mee sotong stall at the esplanade and I was not disappointed....should have order two plates though.....but that bamboo Bryani looks amazing!
ps where was the bamboo Briyani located please?
it is in my description box!
Max is a fan of curry
Malaysia is one of the country that got a lot of good food... plus clean.
Yeah true, this is because we are blessed to have multiple races. Malay, Indian, Portuguese, Chinese, Brits and few others who came all around the world. We shared and united our flavours
Australia is becoming like Malaysia too. I love their food and how the mix the flavors up...... Beautiful
Loads of love 💖
You're so natural Bro, keep it up!
Thank you so much! Got a lot more to come!
I miss Malaysian food, you make me droolllll.....In USA, I can only be vegan+seafood eater....food so bland here.....Can't wait to be back. home
Briyani rice...so delicious...you update the video always when i am at work....😂😂😂😂
haha that is evil of me
@@Macoi24 nope...i am okay with that's...i like your vlogs so much
heni wati 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@Macoi24 😚😚😚😚
Max for my dinner i order briyani rice
2nd time seeing you eating curry mee in Penang 👍 It's my favourite too and i ought to tell you that the best should be Hot Bowl's white curry mee. Just a personal preference 😊
I did have a nice white curry mee while in Penang
The first dish you ate rice crepe / roll I love eating those. When I was a kid I like to unroll them so it can catch all the sauce lol
I like it, increasing the amount of sauce you get.
Like you content from Indonesia
So yummyyyy.. I want it too😭😭
hope you get the opportunity!
Puttu may am usually a breakfast indian dish . But you can eat it with chicken curry or lamb Curry fir an evening .
Oh my god, you made me file on my diet😁
hahahahha😂
@@Macoi24 😁
Max, your briyani song should be the new intro 😂
hahaha I can't believe it actually sounded good
Putu Mayam...the nice vermicili india style
When are they going to invent Smellyvision? Ooooh wee the food looked bomb Max! I envy your metabolism:) It probably helps that you are able to eat lava heat to:)
hahahahaha I am working on it so much:)
I like the way u say.. briyani, briyani, briyani...🤣🤣
haha it gets stuck in my head
Awesome 😎
The Penang Curry Mee where you had your chee cheong fun is quite good too...
My favourite is kuantan road market curry mee.
it is? Dang, I should have tried!
@@cy97 Same family, if I'm not mistaken.
Welcome to my country ✌️...
WAUUUUU WAUUUUU 😋😋🤤
Nice video...looking at your reactiom to those dishes make me want to try it..even though im at penang but some that places i never been before...are u still in penang??
sorry I have already left. but I am sure I will be back
Max, you eat like a local!
The chee cheon fun that you had at Genting cafe is another version prepared with peanut sauce. The authentic Penang version is prepared with prawn paste. Recommend that you try chee cheong fun at the Jelutong morning market stall for your next Penang visit, the sauce mixture is superb.
I have tried several versions of Ipoh chee cheong fun, none can compare with Penang version. Most Penangites will insist the version with prawn paste is the best!
I also had the uncle doing the CCF on Kimberely street in the morning. Thoughts?
Fully agree with you the CCF is delicious. It is near my place & I go there frequently.
You should make another trip to Penang and try out other delicacies that you missed during your recent visit, such as nasi kandar, murtabah, oyster omelette, popiah, rojak, fried koay kak, coconut shake, Penang peranakan food (which is different from the Melaka version), ccf with prawn paste ........😛😛😛
@@judyoh9008 Haha I will definitely be back, but I should also mention that I ate all of those haha I ate nasi kandar 9-10 times. I can't remember
Nice briyani song bro 🤣🤣🤣
hahahahaha
Hi Max!! Wow! Everything looks so good! I can’t believe I missed all these places in Penang 😭😭😭😭😭
reasons to go back:)
Max McFarlin You bet! Penang was a great surprise in Malaysia and we’ll most likely be back 😉
Renata Pereira great to see u here!!!! Amazing how the foodies and travel vloggers connect! wish Gordon n u well and safe travels!
Miami 2KL Hahaha! How nice that you recognized me 😀😀😀. I love watching travel and food videos on YT, even the places I’ve already been 😂😂😂. You always learn something new ❤️. All the best!
Hi Max - welcome to Penang! did you manage to try Joez Coconut Jelly while you were in the Timesquare georgetown vicinity? It's unique to Penang due to their secret technique to make the jelly without any gelatin or agar agar!
Ohhh, that is one thing I did not try. Will put it on my list for next time!
