@@jiophone2412 yeah, usually Dermatologists prescribe off weeks when you don’t use the medication to minimize risk of side effects with long term use. Also they specify which topical steroids are to be used in which parts of the body (cause stronger topical steroid creams shouldn’t be used in more sensitive areas and skin folds) and for how long to use them maximum.
Steroid creams/ointments are for when you flare up. So it’s pretty normal for a doctor to prescribe it if you’re having a flare up lol. I have heard so many people claim their eczema is better off without steroids but the thing is that just means you’re not in a flare up at the moment… When you flare up your skin isn’t just gonna go back to normal if you just leave it alone. You’ll just end up making it worse if you leave it alone untreated, that’s why steroids are important in the healing process of the skin. You should not be using it every single day of the year of course, because if you are that means you’re having a flare up every single day which is a whole other issue… I often have to use it during summer time due to the heat or in fall when my allergies are really bad. Those things trigger my eczema and I have flare ups during those times of the year the most. It’s possible something was triggering your eczema and you got rid of the trigger so you’re okay right now. You could also have been allergic to an ingredient in the steroid you were using which does happen.
Unfortunately learned the hard way. A (bad) Derm prescribed steroid cream for an allergic reaction. Made it so much worse... cysts & rosacea. Took three months to recover. That was the first week of a new job!
@@dominatesym3513 Yes it causes skin thinning. It does work to relieve eczema very quickly (I use it for contact dermatitis) but there are side effects. My skin is now slightly translucent and I can see the veins in my face. I used it once for my dry flaky eczema and it made it go away. It doesn’t work on contact dermatitis however. The only thing that works for that in my experience is steroid creams. Hope that helps!
Totally agree. As a kid i had eczema around my eyes and mouth. I was prescribed hydrocortisone by my GP and since then, yes the eczema has cleared up but ive been left with horrific pigmentation around those areas and ive always had a complex since i was a kid about them. Its really affected my self confidence even to this day.

Fast forward a year later I finally realized what a dangerous cycle I’d be caught in. Cut it off cold turkey, had the worst rebound, was too embarrassed to go outside…I’ve been left with permanent red patches and nine months later the perioral dermatitis still hasn’t gone away. Doctors prescribed me exactly this for my eczema since before kindergarten. It used to work. Until it rebounds in my adulthood and made it worse with no signs of clearing up. Went to a specialist and was prescribed antibiotics. My eczema now has cleared with prominent hyperpigmentation. Despite still being in my late 20s, my skin significantly creased as a side efect. If focused under naked eye, it'll seem like tiny wrinkles on an elderly. It's been 3 years and still on different antibiotics (which is worrying for some of the same side-effect mentioned by Dr. Dray) but I'm glad I turned away from steroid creams. The rebound sucks the very life out of me. Hope my next review, my Derm will finally cease prescribing oral/topical antibiotics too.
I was prescribed hydrocortisone cream 2.5% for folliculitis on my face from shaving. I only use it once a week and sometimes just once every other week. It seems to be helping. My dermatologist did say not to use it more than 1-2 times a week. I’ve read too many horror stories and am freaked out just using it in a couple areas on my face once a week.
I got hot tub folliculitis but I didn’t put hydrocortisone on it. It cleared up with a shower and keeping clean and not going in that hot tub again. Try using a toner and tossing out your razor every time. Also maybe see a different derm.
Yup it cleared my itching and seems to be okay for the very short time. Just to clear the spots that won't go away and then you can maintain it after you stop.
My doctor said use steroid ointment over the counter for my upper lip because it's a hot spot from my allergic reaction that hasn't been able to heal for months. I used it for 4 days and then every other day for 4 days... Gonna try my CeraVe healing ointment and see if that's safe for my allergies because we aren't sure if it's adding to the problems Im having... 😢 My allergist said i have regular, contact, and allergic dermatitis on my face and hands. It's so exhausting.
Thank you for this. I didn’t know this and used cortisone on my child’s face. Now he has discoloration and I feel like i ruined his beautiful face. Is there anything I can do?
Especially for scalp psoriasis would be wonderful! From coal tar shampoo to Duvonex(vitamin A derivative) to liquid steroid treatment. Such as maximum safe usage: ex. : weekends only. Thx
oh my i wish my 12 year old self saw this because i have had terrible psoriasis and it spread to my face i was too shy and ashamed of my skin to go to a doctor and i didn’t know about dermatologists so when i found cortisone i put it everywhere including eyelids for years 😢 i stopped now thanks to cosentyx injection but i wonder if anyone knows how to undo the damage😞😖
I have had super luck with tea tree oil . pure organic , it works for all things . bites , hives , scratches, cuts, acne , rashes , and it heals your skin super fast and reduces swelling and inflammation . I mix it with water only . Do not use it mixed with anything else ! or buy it mixed with other stuff . Im allergic to most all lotions and creams . This works every time. do not overdue it though . rinse it off afterward , works great for acne too . I have Dermatomyositis , I KNOW about Skin Issues !!!! and periorbital dermatitis in my case was caused by antibiotics , too many antibiotics when I was young , and the pill when I was young messed up my skin
Does anyone have any recommendations from their dermatologist as far as what to use instead? :) I’ve had a history of seborrheic dermatitis in my eyebrows and was told (by my dermatologist) to use hydrocortisone cream in them after I wash my face for as long as I can remember.
Seborrheic dermatitis is like dandruff. Why don't you try to wash your eyebrows with a dandruff shampoo with cetoconazol? Dandruff affects eyebrows and eyelids too.
Oddly enough I think a hemorrhoid cream is better for reducing swelling than hydrocortisone. I personally don’t do well with hydrocortisone at all (it burns on my skin), but I do have prescription triamcinolone acetonide for itching from my dermatographia flare-ups and when I get hives. I did use some on my chin and neck after electrolysis along with ice compresses and it did help.

Hi Dr Dray! I’ve been using differin for the past 2 months and haven’t seen any difference. If at all it seems worse. I use a cleanser toner moisturizer and sunscreen in the morning. I’ve been thinking of switching my cleanser to a Korean brand cleanser. I use the cerave acne control cleanser and it’s a bit drying. I wait for my skin to be dry and then apply a pea size amount of differin. Then I wait 2 minutes spray my face with very very little water and then apply moisturizer just so it has a water source to attach to so it doesn’t dry out my face. I don’t know what to do and I’m really stressed out…
Do you realize that using acne controll cleanser and different gel shouldn't be use together since there both can be used as exfoliating and thus cause more irritation and skin thinning if use at the sametime
If it seems worse, you might still be purging. It generally takes 3-4 months to see results with adapalene. Although if I were you, I would look for a more gentle cleanser. Korean products tend to focus on hydration so that's a good idea. A few other good choices: Cerave hydrating cleanser, Vanicream gentle facial cleanser, and Aveeno calm and restore cleanser. You can also chose to alternate your cleansers, like your Cerave Acne Control Cleaner in the morning and a more hydrating cleanser at night. Adapalene can be very drying so choose hydrating products to protect your skin barrier :)
