This was the first rpg that i actually learned to play and i really enjoyed it. Then i wanted to try ff6 wich claimed to be the best of the classic final fantasies, it was amazing but the ending was kinda lame. Right now i'm playing chrono trigger, i'm almost at the end... and until now it was an amazing game already... but i still think that FFV was the best story and the best ending
I think a big reason why people don't talk about this one, is that 4 and 6 not only came to the west when 5 did not, which causes there to be a lot of nostalgia for those two and 7 now that I think about it. Go to almost any review for those three, and you will see a lost of comments about how people grew up with those games, yet with 5 you don't. Five is the best for me, but I grew up on 3 for the DS, so I might be biased. Edit: My younger brother played most of 5 a while back, and his general strategy for bosses was to see what level they were, calculate if he could make it a level of five, then cast Level 5 Death. It was hilarious.
True, FF5 would be just as popular as 4 and 6 if it came out in the US when it originally released instead of releasing in 1999 on ps1, when FF7 and 8 were also out for that system…and from what I hear, FF5 is somewhat popular in Japan, same as how 4 and 6 are in the west I assume
Cool kids (read: big nerds) in the 90s played the RPGe fan patch, which has its own interesting place in emulation history. Some of us have nostalgia for FFV! It just can’t be stressed enough how much gaming exploded with the PS1 and FF7.
The last of the truest Final Fantasy games, as the purists will tell you. It really does need more love. It's the first one to introduce class-customization and show how fun it can be to break the game! Almost feels like you're cheating!
Final Fantasy V was Hironobu Sakaguchi's final game as director as he switched to series producer with VI. So it was the end of one era of Final Fantasy.
Exdeath is my favourite antagonist in the whole series. When he turned into a splinter, it was the most explosive reaction I've ever had in a video game.
I was hoping to find a more thorough source, but you’re probably right about ExDeath’s treehood being a mythological, or at least cultural reference. There are similar ideas in InuYasha. The main character is a demon who is sealed against a sacred tree (often a feature of Japanese shrines), and the villain is a self-hating conglomeration of demons that spends part of the time in a human shape, and part of the time as a chimeric mass. (Fittingly, the villain was named Naraku, which is the name for the Buddhist version of Hell.) ExDeath would seem to be a combination of these ideas: sealing evil creatures in one spot that was supposed to safely contain them, until they merged with their prison and turned into a walking one-man Hell. This is further illustrated with his final boss form depicting a bunch of horrible creatures spilling free from a twisted trunk. Wouldn’t seem so random to a Japanese audience.
It's as you mention, the same idea used in InuYasha were a sacred tree is used to seal spirits, but sealing too many resulted in a monsters (ExDeath here, Naraku in InuYasha). Look up for Shinboku. The tree in question is the one in the 2nd world (Great Forest of Moore) where you fight the crystals. As a curious detail, in World 1 where the seal with the crystals is (near Tule, the first town) is the same place where in world 2 is the Seal Castle (where the 12 legendary weapons are) & in World 3, Exdeath Soul (enemy) appears.
FFV is my favorite Final Fantasy! I love the gameplay and the different combinations involving the job system. For example: equipping a magic user with the Dragoon's Lance ability to deal free magic-based damage that also syphons MP and HP. I also liked the story.
@@thepsychomagus I appreciate the scope increase of FF7 just a little too much not to put it as my number one, but FFV and FFVI are #2 and #3 respectively. I feel like people really need to take a minute to appreciate FF7 for its enemies more than anything else. They are all animated (that's crazy coming from a history where every enemy had been a static picture with the occasional picture swap for when an enemy is prepping something unusual). Most of them are in some way ridiculous and just have tons of character. And there are tons of them. More than any other game in the series by a pretty hefty margin. The steals are also some of the most impactful in the series. They even made morph matter when in FF6 it seemed pretty pointless. I also just like FF7's enemy skills more than the blue/lore from V and VI... though I'll admit that might be because they are more game breaking. They are the real stars of the show, not Sephiroth and Cloud.
I think Bartz is the most under appreciated protagonist in the series. He's one cool dude who works to save the world just on the principal that he needs to have his friends' back. He was completely willing to let go what happened to his dad until he met the old man and Lenna.
Every other member of the group is more of a protagonist than Bartz. He is a nothing character with basically no character development whatsoever, which makes sense because the story doesn't really focus on him at any point. I still like him a lot though, he's like an avatar of the colorful, comedic, and carefree vibe of FFV as a whole. If he wasn't so bad in duodecim he'd probably have been my main
Bartz is more of a blank slate, the avatar for the player to identify with, the one looking at the world with the same level of knowledge about it as we do. No wonder we can change his name in almost all versions - I always changed his name to mine when I was a kid. Kind of like the Pokemon main character.
I feel like nearly everyone who gives this game a chance ends up falling in love with it. I have no doubt that had square released it on snes in the west, it would be way higher on everyone’s list
Yeah honestly the issue for a longtime which was why not many people have experienced FF5 was because we didn't have a accessible competent version of 5 because the original mobile and steam versions were terrible but thankfully with the pixel remasters making the first 6 FFs more accessible than ever hopefully we see more praise for FF5
Definitely gonna agree here!! It was the first 2D Final Fantasy too keep me engaged!! Never thought I'd like a 2D Final Fantasy game but both FF5 and FF6 proved me wrong on that!!
@@thevangsta9892 Yeah honestly FF5 ended up becoming my new favorite FF game (while before it would've been 9 but as someone who is more of a gameplay over story kinda view when it comes to JRPGs I really enjoyed my time with FF5 and see the roots of the job systems is 4 Heroes of Light or the Bravely series lie
Lol, finally someone besides me who pronounces Galuf's name like that XD One thing that people sleep on about this game is funnily enough its story. It has really nice themes about generational conflict, even how the Dawn Warriors leading to the Light Warriors. It is really concise but also doesn't get in the way of the gameplay. This game is like having your JRPG cake and eating it too. This game has spoiled me when it comes to mechanics in JRPGs lol.
Galuf represent! I lean toward using the Japanese vowels for weird names if it's not otherwise clear how to pronounce them. That just makes sense to me
Imo, the job based Final Fantasy titles will always be the most replayable and 5 being the peak of it. The job customization in this game is insane and the story is light hearted and easy to pick up though it has some dark moments, still captures the essence of adventure. Definetely one of the best Final Fantasy games for a new comer to get into then dive into the heavy story based titles like 4, 7 and 10 and save 6 and 9 as best for last.
yes, but also no, i would argue that 2 had more of a "job customization" since you could literaly build the characters to play whatever role you wanted, and 3 had the job system. also 7 materia is basically the best of both worlds from 2 and 5, making it a superior version of ff6 mechanically speaking. finally, while i LOVE 5, its one of, if not my favorite of the numbered ff games, i feel like the best version to play is the moded version that rebalanced classes and gives you 2 equipable abilities. as it feels more like ff tactics, giving you alot more options. unfortunately, vanilla ff5 is too limited in that regard. 1 ability slot is too few.
Honestly I've beaten FFs in order 7, 9, 10, 8 ,3, 1, 4 and 2 atm and currently playing through 5 and before I would've said that 9 is my favorite FF but man even though I haven't beaten 5 yet but it actually already surpassed 9 as my favorite FF because compared to most people in JRPGs I'm actually a gameplay over story kinda player which may sound strange but it isn't to say I don't care for the story but still FF5 has really been such a treat for me
Despite it's vibrant colors, whimsical atmosphere, and comedy, FFV actually has quite a bit of tragedy. The world is decaying, kingdoms fall, friends are lost, etc. I've started to look at the comedic portions as the characters joking around to keep some kind of motivation to push on.
Exdeath was once a tree where ancient people used to seal away evil spirits. Eventually there were so many evil spirits sealed up in there that the tree turned evil.
Glad to know someone enjoys ff5 and ff12 as much as I do. We have similar taste when I saw the tierlist. I dont like missable stuff so I explore as much as possible before continuing the story. Good thing you didnt mention mix because once you know of its power it makes the game too easy if know how to exploit it. Forcing berserk on bosses who are immune and casting blink will make their physical attacks miss. That gives you plenty of time to mix some dragon power on a x-fight party member and hit all 9's if you mix enough. Forcing berserk on exdeath though was unintended and leads to a never ending fight on his tree form.
@@rpg_havenI understand. I would of used it a lot sooner too if the game showed the outcome of a mix with its effects included. I didnt know about it my first playthrough. Gives the game a ton of replay value.
I loved playing V, Bravely Default is a spiritual successor to that game. I've only played BD2 so I hope one day the first will get ported to the Switch at some point.
I much prefer job class systems like these that aren't vanilla, meaning that when you choose a job you won't be limited to only that job's abilities and can mix and match abilities from other jobs
Your videos are so good. I love seeing not only your comments but that you enjoyed these games so much. I've recently played back through many of them myself and it's been nice to reconnect to them.
The reason Exdeath/Exodus is a tree is basically that it was a normal tree with its supernatural life force properties of being a big old tree used to treat it as a prison for evil spirits that were defeated, sealed inside like a genie in a lamp or the like. Basically, eventually the evilness of the evil spirits locked inside the tree corrupted it, and the tree became a self aware being full of demons. The tree is crazy because it's never known any life _but_ being full of the worst demons that human priests could seal away and keep at bay in some way, and it's angry because it's full of angry prisoners.
Ff5 is truly a gem. Played tactics at a young age and to discover the job system is so similar so many years later was mind blowing. Funny and heartfelt, with great customization options and challenges that lend themselves to clever solutions. I don't know when i will replay to try a 4 job fiesta, but i know it won't be long.
This was my first FF I ever played growing up; also currently replaying it and it's honestly better than I remember. It's a very mechanically dense game that offers you a wide range of freedom in play style between unique gear aspects, jobs, spells, abilities, and how you pair it all together. Can be a bit grindy at times for AP but the pixel remaster has a x2 modifier that is a perfect sweetspot for rate of progression. Being in the era of remakes, I couldn't help but imagine how incredible an action rpg remake would be with a fleshed out job system; maybe one day square will circle back
I have to say, this game has my favorite themes like Lenna's Theme, Clash on the Big Bridge, all the Exdeath themes, including the Neo Exdeath theme which is my favorite final boss in terms of music
I really enjoyed my time with FFV. I played through Pixel remaster and used the Interdenominational Void to max out all classes. When they're all maxed out, All passive abilities are permanently enabled, Fast dash, Thief's reveal path, etcetc. I wound up cheesing Exdeth as all Freelancer with Dual cast and Zeninage since I had throw away Gil. lol
I'm so glad you mentioned how addictive the gameplay is, when I was working my way through the game, play jrpgs like I'm reading a book every night before bed, I brought my switch with me to work and just did job grinding for fun and looking for treasure. Such a fun RPG that just seems to hit all the marks of a quality game so far back in time where you don't expect it. FFV is probably in my S tier for me. 70 hours on my file
If you're comfortable playing patched ROMs, there's an FFV Advance patch out there that opens up the jobs more quickly (so that the bonus jobs are in the final crystal, not the post game) and makes it so !Fight and !Item can be swapped out for other commands, which I think really enhances the game.
Hmm, as DonYagamoth’s Necromancer Run revealed, even the !Oath command is overpowered during the First world, so it’s likely Cannoneer and the others favor similar end-game paradigms?
Just discovered this video and channel - it's awesome hearing a review of this game that echoes what I also love about it! I also think it's really cool that we had practically the same ideas of the characters and assigned the same classes as you. Love your voice and clear passion for the medium also. Liked!
Glad to hear you enjoyed the game. I found this to be a Final Fantasy with no real fault just a great game that does everything nicely, and the job system giving it great replayability. Did you play around with Mix or the Beastmaster much? Control and Capture are their own little mechanics that give you a lot of options and interesting solutions and mix can just outright solo the game if you know what your doing. Mixing and matching of the Job System is rightfully praised but one aspect that used to go unoticed was how many classes have their own ways of dealing with the bosses so long as you employ some varied strategies. It's why the Four Job Fiesta way of playing as become quite popular. Have you already done a perspective for FF12? I can't find the video on your channel.
Hey there, thanks for watching. I didn't try either of those jobs much, except Beastmaster to help learn some Blue magic spells. Safe to say when I play it again I'll have to change everything up I haven't reviewed FF12 yet since I played it back in 2010 or so. Thinking I'll try the Zodiac Age and talk about that at some point
I was playing ffv when I was 10 back in 1996 on my PC. It was an emulation from the super fami with an English translation. It is my favorite one out of the 16 to 32 bit games. Ffvii and ffx are pretty good aswell. Also loved playing 11 online on the ps2.
FFV (Advance) was my first Final Fantasy game, so it holds a special place in my heart. Played IV and VI afterwards and can still recall how I disliked the fact that the job system was only in FFV.
Just beat ffv today and couldn't agree more with your takes. The job system is where the game truly shines but I don't think there was any one area that was bad. As for the job grinding - there is one square in the ocean where most enemies give you either 8 or 25 abp so that cut down heavily on the tedium. The fact that I had to look up where to grind validates your point, tho.
ff5 is the first final fantasy i actually wanted (and still plan to) complete (playing the GBA version). i am currently at the first steps on the merged world and i am having alot of fun. i think the job system is amazing and i wish that all final fantasy games would have that job system. i think the story does seem kind of rushed and at some points the story goes "well... that stuff is here now with no real explanation!". i dont like how the saves work since sometiems you run into some pretty crazy stuff (red dragon atomic ray in exdeaths castle was basically a jumpscare for me). i really liked that the game doesnt take itself serious by making some enemies either completly "unfair" or extremly laughable. i really fell in love with the bluemage. i think its the coolest conzept of a role i have ever seen in a RPG and wish that there was more of it. the idea of level spells is amazing that further shows how much planning comes into the game (making certain enemies levels to be just right to almost dodge all of the level spells). i love the way this game is difficult (for a first time player of the series) but yet invites the player to abuse every little thing that the game gives you. i like that almost every job is useful (i love playing dragoon eventhough its pretty weird by being a melee class that lets the backrow characters tank). overall i have alot of fun playing this game with only a few things i dont like and i will 100% try to continue to get everything and doing every optional/super boss even IF i have to use a guide/walkthrough. gilgamesh is by the way probably the most adorable and loveable character in the entire game for me next to boko (but hes cute so that doesnt count)
Yo, is this a new fan translation patch to FFV SNES? The thin font and dialogue looks miles better than anything that was done on SNES or PS1 before! Heck this gives the GBA port a run for its money!
My favourite RPG of all time. When I first played it, I was also heavily into TTRPGs and its impressive how FFV plays like a Dungeons & Dragons game in a way that few other games did (even including western RPGs like Skyrim). The cast is fun but there is also tragedy to each character. The story is great with its pacing, and the locations on the two unmerged worlds are top notch. I would even say the interactions between characters resemble a show like Legends of Vox Machina, which really shows how close to D&D this game is. Also the job system is awesome, a fun twist to TTRPG classes.
If you haven't played Final Fantasy Tactics, you would love it. Its job system is adapted and expanded from this game. I don't recall exactly but I think I put nearly 150 hours into that game in order to discover all the hidden jobs and figure out all the game breaking builds, like the Calculator. Tactics is easily the best Final Fantasy game in my opinion. No Blue Mage, but the spiritual sequel (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, also excellent) has one. Anyway, I just started Final Fantasy V and your description has me excited to get into it!
I am also going through all the main FF games. I have worked my way up to FF8. I really like FF5. I had played it years prior and when I was going through ff3 I couldn't help thinking how much better FF5 was.
I love 5. The jobs system is rewarding, and the bosses are so varied and technical that you can challenge yourself with more or less in any category and still win (the ff5 four job fiesta takes the cake there, holy crap!) The characters are decent and not too deep. Some say this is a negative, but given how some parodies of shows or movies tend to give weird off-handed quirks and personalities to the casts, you can do the same here and fit it around the job system for your own custom adventure. And that's what 5 is. A custom adventure with variety and a side of whimsy. I love 9 as my favorite, but 5 is massively replayable and a blast from start to finish.
"A new comer's view" bro, I litterally played it as my first FF game and the ambientation/rythm of this game beats FF6 and 4 for two reasons - Its not too edgy - Explains all fucking characters (exept Enuo by disgrace)
For someone which finished it two times the snes version and one time the gba one, I say it's a classic, fun and damn good rpg. Underappreciated. More people should play it. It's a fantastic journey. And the battle system is top tier.
It's heavily implied that because of being pulled into the Void in this game, all incarnations of Gilgamesh throughout the series are the same character. Just hopping around the FF multiverse
I recommend the Custom Classes mod for a replay, it allows you to put 3 abilities on a job instead of 1 and attack isn't always the standard command, which means you can make a characters with Black, White, Summon and Time magic for example And yes Blue Mage is absurd, why waste time with tier 2 spells when I can spam Aqua Breath and White Wind? These guys are simply built different
great choice playing the SNES rom with GBA translation. More accurate translation than the late 90s original fan translation, plus much better sound than proper GBA version, and no lags (vs Anthology version which has tons of em)
I was not aware it HAD a bad reputation. I remember playing a translated ROM before any official release and wondering why I had to violate the law to be able to play such a banger.
Level doesn’t raise stats but it does affect HP, MP, and almost every damage equation. This makes it a significant challenge to beat the game at a lower level.
that is why i think Sepiroth is so stong besides the whole S cells and Jenova thing he is obviously maxed as a Samuri black and blue and white mage maybe red to tbh
final fantasy V is one of my all time favorite games not just final fantasy games but it does have a few flaws that hold it back form being 10/10 best game ever like IV the first being blue magic and how much of a pain it is to learn some of the spells i much prefer how the later games do it where all a blue mage had to do was see it used and they learned it second is it has couple of "oh crap i really dont want to deal with this again moments" mainly the events after getting the fire crystal jobs and getting most of the lvl blue magic spells and lastly and my biggest gripe with the game is how long it takes for the final party member to join since their my favorite character in game other than that its amazing it has great characters good story best job class in the series second best antagonist in the series (behind kefka) great cheesable bosses that rewards knowing what your doing status aliments are actually useful and its one of the only two where in the later updated gba ports the bonus content is actual worth doing and fun (other being II with the soul of rebirth) the extra classes sealed cave and cloister of the dead are actual fun unlike the crap in I IV and VI especially VI i already wasnt a fan of the two original split party dungeons in VI and the dragons den is just those but on steroids lol
Your stats might not grow with level but you still do more damage. The pixel remaster also makes the grind easier to deal with. You can disable encounters and adjust exp, gil and abp gain up to 4X the normal rate. The lack of attention FFV gets is likely do to it not making it out of Japan until the PS port.
Spoilers in the third paragraph! I made Bartz my melee damage guy, Lenna my summoner/red mage (dualcasting summons is so awesome), Faris was my Dragoon/black mage, and Galuf was my time mage/barehanded. After Galuf left the party (I’m still upset about this), Krile became my dedicated white mage/time mage.
Fantastic game! Had this on ps1 as a kid and loved it, loved the gba version which was imo the best version. Didn't like pixel remaster much though, it slashed away the cool new jobs and bonus dungeon the gba version had as well as not fixing any bugs (like the agi dmg bug for agi based weapons) and doubling weight on gear making battles a bit longer. FF5 had possibly the best SNES boss mechanics with every boss having a unique strategy and weakness, it never felt like it was just press A to win though if you built your party right and min-maxed it could certainly turn into that. Solid entry, the only thing it has against it is an admittedly weak story but it never takes itself seriously like 4 or 6 did so I personally never held that against it.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 recently got me more interested in JRPGs with a class/job system so I think I'll pick up the Pixel remaster version of this game soon.
@@rpg_haven it would've been amazing if it was a randomizer patch for casuals. But hey, it's a currently running charity event, so great time to get his video out!
whats weird to think about is that final fantasy 11 is fundamentally final fantasy 5, if your attacks were instead set to auto-attacks and your abilities were separated to give you access to skills or spells. So much so that certain tricks had popped up in 11 that you could sort of do in 5, like shadow images/blink - when rise of the zilart came out for ff11, a lot of parties in dynamis typically had a main job and a side job and virtually 60% of the alliance you had were side jobbing Ninja because of the shadow images. The strategy for casting images as a damage dealer started in ff5, and its funny because if you were an american playing ff11 at the time you saw people struggle thinking it was WoW when in reality you had to play it as if it were ff5 lol.
I appreciate Galuf unseating Aerith as the first primary small party permadeath (technically Tellah could be considered that but he has way less gametime than the moon King)
I've recently made an effort to play through every mainline FF and I started with 5, next and now on 4. 5 is superior, no doubt. But for it's time I'm sure 4 was impactful. I can't go back in time and play it when it was made so I have to admit it's faults and give it grace. FFV is great though, Bartz such a dummy good main
I like your channel, been watching quite a few of your videos, but I have to say: You have one of the most pants-on-head INSANE FF series tier list I've ever seen. It's like you spun a roulette wheel to determine the positions. I still like hearing your views on the games, but you so have some bizarre tastes.
"Does Final Fantasy V Deserve Its Reputation? Thumbnail: NO" Oh great, a hit piece against one of the most beloved sprite FFs. **Watches video, hears nothing but praise** ...WTF? Have we simply been living on different corners of the Internet?
Right? That's what I clicked on to find out about. As far as I was aware people were at worst neutral on FFV. In my opinion it's underrated, but I've never been under the impression that it has a bad reputation
Usually I talk more about the reputation at the start of these videos, but I kinda forgot to do that for this one. My bad. Before playing it, it always seemed like FFV was lesser known and generally not considered one of the greats, while I absolutely think it is. I feel like most people don't bother playing V because it doesn't get much hype, and that sucks.
FFV is the most Dragon Quest Final fantasy, and DQ is amazing so FFV is great too, you dont always need super complex story, lore and characters if the Game is good, Dragon Quest is the proof of that, being the most popular rpg series in japan, classic , simple and fun are good things too, sometimes you just want to relax , especially in today's era of cynism, we need the classic stories and believe in heroes too.
By the time Final Fantasy V actually came to the States on FF Anthology, it was after FF4, or "2", after FF6 ("3"), Chrono Trigger, FF7, and we were awaiting FF8. 6 and 7 were highly dramatic, which was carried over from FF4, so many people expected FF5 to be the same, which it mostly wasn't... especially with translation issues like with Faris. It has a Guns n Roses kinda thing where people waited so long for the next album that they sorta stopped caring after the next big thing popped up. Also Final Fantasy 7 brought in a new audience who never played FF on the SNES but because of mass marketing, they had to try it. Those new kids had no interest in sprite graphics from yyears ago. Also, Final Fantasy 4 ranks that low but Final Fantasy 2 ranks that high? Most people who've played the games when they were new would argue against that.
I recently started playing the game but quit due to it's difficulty spikes (it all started in the second world and peaked in the island shrine,i might replay it after my final college exams and this time i will specialize the party instead of trying everything since i feel that i was punished for trying everything)the game isn't easy like many people said nor is it super difficult, the game cast isn't bad i loved krile and galluf until that point in the game(bartz, leena and farris are not bad too)and the job system is amazing much better than the psp final fantasy tactics that ruined many jobs(for example white mage is absolutely necessary in FF 5 but in tactics it sucks and is surpassed by the chemist)the balance in that game isn't very good. I also liked exdeath something rare in classical jrpgs to me If you can please reply to my comment i want to know what you think about my points. Edit:fun fact we have the same opinion about final fantasy 2 and 4 to me 2 is better than 4 storywise and character wise
Agreed, 5 is one of the harder FF games when it comes to getting through the story. Coming up with a plan and sticking to it (unless it doesn't work) is the way to go. It's really all about how much time you want to spend grinding, though. I saw your comment about 4, cool to hear when someone feels the same. A lot of the fervent fandom for it seems to come down to its appeal as a streamlined, almost "JRPG-lite" experience. That's cool, but it didn't make much of impression on me.
My way of beating this one is to max the class level for every char on every class then stick to freelancer for most of the story. It takes a while but the extra levels gained while leveling the classes can make a big difference.
@@MacArawn yeah i noticed this too apparently the freelancer and mimic jobs are the best ones in the game but you need to master the other jobs, the difficulty becomes a matter of how much time you are Willing to put in the game. Edit:my exams finished today so i can now go back to it.
The best classes in the final fantasy series to me are: 1 - Sage final fantasy 3 2 - Freelancer Final fantasy V 3 - The Figaro Brothers Final fantasy VI
I will say that the story was slightly....slow. But it is funny as hell. And the game is just.....so....damn...much....fun! It is not the masterpiece story driven epics of IV, VI, or VII. There is just so much to do and see. Side questing galore, and the job system is the peak of Final Fantasy job system. I love the hell out of this game.
FFV is probably the most "Final Fantasy"-ish Final Fantasy. You have everything a FF game supposed to have in this one masterpiece game. It's almost like an insult when FF16 producer said that FF16's gameplay was inspired by FF5's... If anything, FF16 is the least customizable FF game I've ever played.
Final Fantasy 5 for me is the best Final Fantasy the only two I would consider close seconds would be Final Fantasy 2 and Final Fantasy 15. The story is fantastic yeah it's still condensed enough that it doesn't precede the gameplay, the characters have enough backstory and feel fleshed out enough, and the refined job system is just perfect. I know a lot of people grew up with six and seven, but I personally feel that six has horrible pacing and could definitely use a remaster of some kind. It's not a bad game, its story is excellent but I think it could have waited a generation or so before coming to fruition. Final Fantasy 7 is a great game but for me it has a terrible endgame. Which makes completing the game tedious after you've done everything, and no I don't count the weapons as a good finale to the game as you really have to grind and play as meta as possible. They are great games but they could have been better, Hence the reason seven has had so many remasters. But five not only had great combat, but a solid endgame to which you could grind freely and happily with plenty extra to do, and it had a solid story that didn't take over gameplay. The job system was refined to its pinnacle with almost no flaws to its creation. You could play hundreds of different party combinations and for turn-based game to allow that much freedom is hard to do. And not to mention since it doesn't take itself too seriously most of the time it's relaxing to just play it to completion. When the game does challenge you it challenges you well and pretty much fairly, with a few exceptions do having to play as precise as possible for certain enemies. For me I don't think a turn-based game has entertained me quite like five. It's hard to balance turn-based games in general, and five did it as well as you possibly could. I think that's why they haven't remastered it quite yet because it's so perfect, and the reason 6 probably hasn't had one except for the pixel remasters is because a lot of people think that game is perfect as well. And while I don't think six is perfect, the fact that 5 and 6 haven't had a remastered and people still love these games to death should show how much care and love went into them in the first place.❤
I enjoyed reading your analysis. Haven't played 6 yet so I can't comment on that, but I agree 7 has some pacing problems. And that 5 has the best job system in the series.
@@rpg_havenyeah five has my favorite combat in the series, perfectly flexible with plenty of options in combat and a plethora of items and gear found throughout the world. Making set ups and figuring out the perfect playstyle that fits you is unlike any other old school turn-based Final Fantasy. Unfortunately only Final Fantasy 15 and world of Final Fantasy Maxima are they only modern Final Fantasy that I find interesting. World of Final Fantasy being probably the only modern Final Fantasy with a story that I never skipped on my first playthrough. It's like Final Fantasy meets isekai in a Pokemon world. I'm actually thinking of putting Final Fantasy World on the top, as well I love all the others world is the most easy to get into and just replay after you get past the extremely long tutorial.
It's the perfect example of a "classic" RPG.
@@fernandojs4074 I think VI was where the complexity of the series started to ramp up _just_ beyond "classic" RPG storytelling.
That's for sure, but I guess I thought by the 2020s most fans who talk about the series on forums and stuff would have played all the games
@@rpg_haven They have, but they either let their nostagia blind them, or they care more about story than gameplay.
I actually grew up on 5 on gba
The last of the truest Final Fantasy games, as the purists will tell you. It really does need more love. It's the first one to introduce class-customization and show how fun it can be to break the game! Almost feels like you're cheating!
Final Fantasy V was Hironobu Sakaguchi's final game as director as he switched to series producer with VI. So it was the end of one era of Final Fantasy.
Yup, Final Fantasy VI was more technology than Magic.😔
I'm playing pixel remaster right now. I completely forgot that Zenigage is so insanely broken and I love it.
Yea that was the fun finding all the ways to break the game. Disgea turned that concept into a game
Going 3D ruined everything.
(Fittingly, the villain was named Naraku, which is the name for the Buddhist version of Hell.)
ExDeath would seem to be a combination of these ideas: sealing evil creatures in one spot that was supposed to safely contain them, until they merged with their prison and turned into a walking one-man Hell. This is further illustrated with his final boss form depicting a bunch of horrible creatures spilling free from a twisted trunk. Wouldn’t seem so random to a Japanese audience.
Nice insights, that makes a little more sense
Low tech version of "What if the Ghostbusters' containment chamber got so full it became haunted and came to life and started attacking everybody?"
FFV is my favorite Final Fantasy! I love the gameplay and the different combinations involving the job system. For example: equipping a magic user with the Dragoon's Lance ability to deal free magic-based damage that also syphons MP and HP. I also liked the story.
I almost have FFV as my favorite but FFVI beats it out to drop it to 2nd place.
Bartz is cool and stuff it feels like Faris is protagonist of the game
Every other member of the group is more of a protagonist than Bartz. He is a nothing character with basically no character development whatsoever, which makes sense because the story doesn't really focus on him at any point. I still like him a lot though, he's like an avatar of the colorful, comedic, and carefree vibe of FFV as a whole. If he wasn't so bad in duodecim he'd probably have been my main
Put Bartz and Galuf together and you have a hilarious duo!
@@poleon2003 Not to mention the PSX version's translation was hot garbage.
@@jonothanthrace1530 And it's bad load times as well
Definitely gonna agree here!!
Lol, finally someone besides me who pronounces Galuf's name like that XD
One thing that people sleep on about this game is funnily enough its story.
That just makes sense to me
FF5 is pretty underrated. I remember when they released it in the US on ps1. Loved it since I had played tactics just before this came out!
Honestly, i found ff5 story better than ff4 because it's doesn't do fake death like ff4 and it also ruin the entire game for me.
Honestly I've beaten FFs in order 7, 9, 10, 8 ,3, 1, 4 and 2 atm and currently playing through 5 and before I would've said that 9 is my favorite FF but man even though I haven't beaten 5 yet but it actually already surpassed 9 as my favorite FF because compared to most people in JRPGs I'm actually a gameplay over story kinda player which may sound strange but it isn't to say I don't care for the story but still FF5 has really been such a treat for me
That's not so strange - I'm more of a gameplay over story guy, too.
A heroic spirit isn't displayed during times of peace; it is displayed during a succession of travails.
I find it funny how people call FFV's story lighthearted. It has funny moments but so do the so called "serious" games in the series.
After playing most of the FFs. Five’s cast is my definite favorite.
Exdeath was once a tree where ancient people used to seal away evil spirits. Eventually there were so many evil spirits sealed up in there that the tree turned evil.
Ahh thanks. It's cool lore, I think the translation makes it seem sillier than it is
Might have to agree. I'd want to replay XII first though
Oh man, I didn't even touch the Chemist. For some reason I shy away from classes that use items like that. Same with Rikku in FFX
Bravely Default looks fun
I really wish they'd port up Bravely Default and Bravely Second
FFV was a great game had a awesome job system.
Ff5 has best monster variety in my opinion
I much prefer job class systems like these that aren't vanilla, meaning that when you choose a job you won't be limited to only that job's abilities and can mix and match abilities from other jobs
Your videos are so good. I love seeing not only your comments but that you enjoyed these games so much. I've recently played back through many of them myself and it's been nice to reconnect to them.
Thank you
The reason Exdeath/Exodus is a tree is basically that it was a normal tree with its supernatural life force properties of being a big old tree used to treat it as a prison for evil spirits that were defeated, sealed inside like a genie in a lamp or the like.
Thanks for the explanation. That's actually pretty cool and makes a lot more sense now
As a lifelong FF fan, it nice to find someone who’s new to it and how much they enjoy it too! Great job with your editing and great reading as well!
Thank you so much!
My favorite FF
Ff5 is truly a gem. Played tactics at a young age and to discover the job system is so similar so many years later was mind blowing. Funny and heartfelt, with great customization options and challenges that lend themselves to clever solutions. I don't know when i will replay to try a 4 job fiesta, but i know it won't be long.
IT COSTS GIL!? Oh my God I'm getting Bartz & Galuf off of samurai right now! Excellent video I'm thoroughly enjoying FFV right now
The only reason ff5 is underrated is due to the US not getting it until the playstation port...
I agree with your choices but I also like to include "Parting Of Sorrow" and "The Day Will Come", They are also really good.
Always great to see more people enjoying FFV
I’m really glad that you liked it this much. It’s probably my favorite FF game.
I’m thinking of doing the “Four Job Fiesta” next summer. Sounds fun!
I love it despite that the SNES one never left Japan.
FFV is my all time favorite
Hell yeah
If you're comfortable playing patched ROMs, there's an FFV Advance patch out there that opens up the jobs more quickly (so that the bonus jobs are in the final crystal, not the post game) and makes it so !Fight and !Item can be swapped out for other commands, which I think really enhances the game.
Thanks, I'll try that patch next time I play V. This playthrough was also on a patched ROM, but just for the translation
Liked!
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video
My first FF and one of my all time favourite with ton of replay value 🎉
Gilgamesh is actually on a bridge in ff12 in the llusu mines. My fav appearance
Safe to say when I play it again I'll have to change everything up
I haven't reviewed FF12 yet since I played it back in 2010 or so. Thinking I'll try the Zodiac Age and talk about that at some point
@@rpg_haven I saw it on the tierlist and was worried I missed out. One of my favorties alongside 5 & 6.
I was playing ffv when I was 10 back in 1996 on my PC. It was an emulation from the super fami with an English translation. It is my favorite one out of the 16 to 32 bit games. Ffvii and ffx are pretty good aswell. Also loved playing 11 online on the ps2.
He turned himself into a splinter. Funniest shit I've ever seen.
FFV is a masterpiece, no doubt. The difficulty and creativity on display are unrivaled. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts, thanks for sharing.
I so so appreciate this video and everyone celebrating in the comments. It's such a special game!
Yo, is this a new fan translation patch to FFV SNES? The thin font and dialogue looks miles better than anything that was done on SNES or PS1 before! Heck this gives the GBA port a run for its money!
It's the SNES version with the GBA script port patch. I used the "shadowed fonts" version, which looks great.
I agree with the myth for the transforming tree they used that in Tenchi Muyo with Sasami and Tsunami.
That about sums it up. I love FFV
This was my first Final Fantasy (on GBA) and it's amazing honestly
If you haven't played Final Fantasy Tactics, you would love it. Its job system is adapted and expanded from this game. I don't recall exactly but I think I put nearly 150 hours into that game in order to discover all the hidden jobs and figure out all the game breaking builds, like the Calculator. Tactics is easily the best Final Fantasy game in my opinion. No Blue Mage, but the spiritual sequel (Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, also excellent) has one.
Anyway, I just started Final Fantasy V and your description has me excited to get into it!
Glad to hear you're checking out V. I'm looking forward to Tactics, I'm going to play it after VI
I am also going through all the main FF games. I have worked my way up to FF8. I really like FF5. I had played it years prior and when I was going through ff3 I couldn't help thinking how much better FF5 was.
I love FF5! Its such a fun game and has a great job class system.
I love 5. The jobs system is rewarding, and the bosses are so varied and technical that you can challenge yourself with more or less in any category and still win (the ff5 four job fiesta takes the cake there, holy crap!)
The characters are decent and not too deep.
"A new comer's view" bro, I litterally played it as my first FF game and the ambientation/rythm of this game beats FF6 and 4 for two reasons
- Its not too edgy
- Explains all fucking characters (exept Enuo by disgrace)
I agree on IV. FFV does everything better than that game. Haven't played VI yet
For someone which finished it two times the snes version and one time the gba one, I say it's a classic, fun and damn good rpg. Underappreciated. More people should play it. It's a fantastic journey. And the battle system is top tier.
I always tell people to come into the story like it's a Saturday Morning cartoon. It think people end up appreciating the story more after that.
It's heavily implied that because of being pulled into the Void in this game, all incarnations of Gilgamesh throughout the series are the same character. Just hopping around the FF multiverse
Off topic but wth is that dialogue font?
I recommend the Custom Classes mod for a replay, it allows you to put 3 abilities on a job instead of 1 and attack isn't always the standard command, which means you can make a characters with Black, White, Summon and Time magic for example
And yes Blue Mage is absurd, why waste time with tier 2 spells when I can spam Aqua Breath and White Wind? These guys are simply built different
That sounds sick
I don't remember why I first decided to get FFV but it quickly became my second favorite in the series after FFIX.
great choice playing the SNES rom with GBA translation. More accurate translation than the late 90s original fan translation, plus much better sound than proper GBA version, and no lags (vs Anthology version which has tons of em)
I do my research! :]
Good to know, thank you
dude, this review is a fkin masterpiece. guy is gold!
that is why i think Sepiroth is so stong besides the whole S cells and Jenova thing he is obviously maxed as a Samuri black and blue and white mage maybe red to tbh
I'm playing it now and glad I finally gave it a chance cause I'm liking it more than 4.
In Japan V has a much better reputation
final fantasy V is one of my all time favorite games not just final fantasy games but it does have a few flaws that hold it back form being 10/10 best game ever like IV the first being blue magic and how much of a pain it is to learn some of the spells i much prefer how the later games do it where all a blue mage had to do was see it used and they learned it second is it has couple of "oh crap i really dont want to deal with this again moments" mainly the events after getting the fire crystal jobs and getting most of the lvl blue magic spells and lastly and my biggest gripe with the game is how long it takes for the final party member to join since their my favorite character in game
other than that its amazing it has great characters good story best job class in the series second best antagonist in the series (behind kefka) great cheesable bosses that rewards knowing what your doing status aliments are actually useful and its one of the only two where in the later updated gba ports the bonus content is actual worth doing and fun (other being II with the soul of rebirth) the extra classes sealed cave and cloister of the dead are actual fun unlike the crap in I IV and VI especially VI i already wasnt a fan of the two original split party dungeons in VI and the dragons den is just those but on steroids lol
Gonna watch the II video next because idk how that can land in A
V is my go to when wanting to replay a classic RPG
I was upset about that too! Hahah
Final fantasy 5 was unique hame and I really liked the plot. Also it quite a difficult game.
I thought the reputation was that it's one of the best FF games. Learn something new every day.
Good points. As far as traditional JRPG gameplay goes, it's hard to top FF5. Still one of the only remotely difficult Final Fantasy games
FF5 is my favorite game in the series, the gameplay is so addictive and makes for incredible replayability!
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 recently got me more interested in JRPGs with a class/job system so I think I'll pick up the Pixel remaster version of this game soon.
Awesome, hope you enjoy it
A Patch? You describe the Four Job Fiesta... But is there a patch for that now? Curious.
I assumed there was but looks like not. More of a "mental patch" then
@@rpg_haven it would've been amazing if it was a randomizer patch for casuals. But hey, it's a currently running charity event, so great time to get his video out!
@@ZappaSlave Oh nice, that explains why it's getting so many views. I'll have to try that run someday
whats weird to think about is that final fantasy 11 is fundamentally final fantasy 5, if your attacks were instead set to auto-attacks and your abilities were separated to give you access to skills or spells.
That's pretty cool. I'd like to check out FF11 someday, if it's even possible to play in the future
I appreciate Galuf unseating Aerith as the first primary small party permadeath (technically Tellah could be considered that but he has way less gametime than the moon King)
I played the untranslated SFC cartridge my first playthrough and absolutely loved it. Its a grest game even when you dont understand the language 😂
For sure :]
Hahah, I'll take it. Thanks for watching
Only played ff3 thru ff9, and ff5 has been my favorite so far. And the most difficult out of the ones i played

Have fun :]
"Does Final Fantasy V Deserve Its Reputation? Thumbnail: NO"
Oh great, a hit piece against one of the most beloved sprite FFs.
**Watches video, hears nothing but praise**
...WTF?
Well said!
Thanks for sharing for your perspective. Check out my video on FF2 to hear my thoughts on that one. I think it helps that I played the GBA remake
My favorit FF by far i love the job system
Some jobs in FFV are just ick, but I understand your point. (Bard, Dancer, Geomancer, and Barbarian are some of the worst.)
I also liked exdeath something rare in classical jrpgs to me
If you can please reply to my comment i want to know what you think about my points.
Good video, thanks. Gonna give this game a go on emulator
I'll be back when you do FF6, idk if your saving the best for last .. subbed
Thanks for the sub. I am-FF15 video coming soon, then 6 after that
@@rpg_haven also.. you are saving the best for last by the way (imo) .. I wish we had a ff6 3d remake .. enjoy the vids tho
The best classes in the final fantasy series to me are:
1 - Sage final fantasy 3
2 - Freelancer Final fantasy V
3 - The Figaro Brothers Final fantasy VI
solid choices
you also might like Dragon Quest 9 it vary grndy with many jobs to unlock and max out to make godly op characters.
The only reputation I have ever heard about 5 is that it's the best of the classic FF's due to the job system depth. Which is correct.
This is definitely an S tier FF game and is 2nd among all the FF games for me. The only one that I put ahead of it is FFVI.
