Blue Mages are always so weird to me due to how weird some of the spells are. Some of them are like "Deals damage equal to half your HP divided by the rotation of the planets and if it's a Tuesday or not." and then the other half is just like "Here's a nuke and a max defense buff. Have fun."
Prelude to FFT calculator/arithmetician 😂. 4:30 toad boss shenanigans is as fun as Romeo’s ballad on omega. 5:25 not toggling off encounters in boost mode eh? 20:25 I saw that 😅 22:55 didn’t know about Odin instakilling rear for neo exdeath though my doom casted but didn’t go off in 30 seconds. Top middle can be hit with break so that’s a unique way to kill final boss. Assuming blue mage can’t petrify. Oh 23:03 missed for you too. Weird.
You right. I either forgot, or didn't know, that it deals extra damage to "desert" monsters. Good thing the fight ended up not being too bad regardless.
I have watched several people play ff2 and they all had issues with the final boss. They just kept selecting optimum for equip which does duel wielding. I specifically kept shields on and had no issues at all with the boss.
IMHO the following are all Blue Mages in other mainline games: FF6 - Strago's Lores are straight up FF5 blue magic, with the same learn mechanics FF7 - Enemy Skill Materia is this game's version of Blue Magic FF8 - Limited, but Quistis' limit break FF9 - Quina is this game's blue mage, but the power is gotten through eating rather than being hit by learnable spells
I'd agree that all of these are blue magic. Square really loved putting blue magic mechanics in the from ff5 through ff10(-x). They just also didn't have proper job classes for these games.
@@veghesther3204he is the weakest out of all of the FFX characters, but that's because of his placement on the sphere grid. He has to dip into another character's grid and will always be behind them in growth. Unless you specifically grind out the sphere grid to max all stats and learn all abilities for everyone, there's no real reason to use him as he will be the least effective party member. However, he is still a blue mage who's mechanics are essentially the same as Quistis' which is why he shouldn't have been left out of the list given by the OP.
@@glyyytch i would argue that limits in FF8 are completely diferent from the other games, since they are so easy to access. so you could just spam them every fight. and that goes for every character. its kinda ironic that most people(me included) will see the summons are free, on first play, and just spam that. but then you get to understand FF8 systems, and oh boy is it fun to mess around with it. the most broken and convoluted system in the franchise, but also the most interesting. 5 is still my favorite, but i think they limited it too much by only allowing 1 equipable ability. it should've been like tactics, that just have diferent categories, and allow you to mix and match.
It's interesting how the ability to turn off encounters shifts the value of spells around. Rod-boosted Flamethrower has been my default attack pretty much as soon as I learn it, due to the cost efficiency. Contrast with 1000 Needles which is about the cost of tier 2 magic for half the damage. It's neat. I feel bad for Death Claw. Previous versions of FF5 would cause a spell to fail if even one of its ailments targeted an immunity. So by the time the second opportunity to learn it comes around it's mostly useless. Just like my precious little inept Remora.
Agreed. Skipping random encounters is very useful to prioritize more interesting parts of the games, but it definitely makes some spells/abilities in the game more or less important than they would be in a "normal" playthrough.
Same here. Until actually doing the run, I never realized how many bosses were vulnerable to some really powerful status effects that really helped with many boss fights.
I spent months getting all of the Blue Mage spells in FFXI and getting geared. I mainly used SMN, WHM, BLM, SCH, DRK and BRD so BLU was primarily for entertainment. All the times being in a party and wondering if I just cast the right spell as I wait for it to complete. I can still remember what all the FFXI spell versions do. Mostly because I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours learning them and I had to set up spells for passive abilities to survive getting them. The fun of getting Death Scissors, 1000 Needles and Winds of Promyvion solo. I spent over 40 hours in Promyvion Holla getting Winds of Promyvion. Since I can't remember a bunch of things it's time to run this again. Maxing out the Jobs in FF5 or nuking and beating myself into the ground in FF2 are some of my favorite activities in Final Fantasy games. That and casting Comet on a level 1-3 Savanna Rarab in FF11.
Loved your FF challenge runs! This is the kind I really love, incentivising using cool strategies and fun content in the game. Restrictive enough to uncover neat details that most people would never normally see, and not so restrictive that there's no strategy available. (Side note, soul cannon always does half your max HP. Which you probably know but just in case, it's one of the biggest roadblocks in FFV challenge runs imo when you don't have healing or high damage output, it's impossible to survive two rounds) The fact you can level 5 death bosses in FFV never gets old.
My favorite iteration of the Blue Mage was in FFXI. I didn't ever get one to max, but I really loved how you could set certain spells to gain certain stats. They had such a unique gameplay and customizability. Makes me nostalgic to think about.
I had a friend make a "blue mage" for 3.5e, unfortunately she had no idea how to balance anything...and she was obsessed with ffx-2 and combined the gun mage and berserker. It was not great.
Fun fact. If you tried the Atomos boss fight on the SNES using Time Slip, the game will check if Atomos is immune to Sleep and immune to Old, and will cause the spell to fail if it's immune to _either one_ of those statuses. Because it is immune to Old, Time Slip will straight up fail, regardless if it's susceptible to Sleep. I learned this the hard way when I was doing a Chaos Randomizer FJF run.
An even more hilarious way to deal with Atomos is two-shotting him with a combo of dark spark and lv 5 death. I was so giddy when I did it the first time.
FF10 was my first game in the series and technically my first experience with enemy skills, but 7 was a proper first time with enemy skill magic 1000 Needles and Bad Breath feel like the cornerstones of blue magic being a fun unorthodox class to mess with
Gilgamesh's level in the fight is 31, but dark spark rounds down after it hits, leaving him at level 15. There are a couple bosses like this, where level 5 death can be used, but only after hitting with dark spark.
@@veghesther3204 oh wow, I heard somebody mention that you can kill almost every boss in the game with level 5 death and level manipulation recently and I thought that was not true but I hadn't considered that you could level them up to 255. I'd definitely consider Enemy Skill materia blue magic. It's the same mechanic in all but name. I didn't consider FF7 because it doesn't really have a job class system (and you can't get 3 enemy skill materia until Forgotten capital. Which is a long time to not have a "full" party).
What number can you divide in half to make vulnerable to level 5 death? Every multiple of 5 doubled is still a multiple of 5. Sometimes a number can be a multiple of 5 and dividing it in half will make it no longer a multiple of 5, but there should never be a need to half a number to then make it a multiple of 5.
Dark spark rounds down. So Gilgamesh starts at level 31 and ends at level 15. Anytime dark spark is used for a boss it's to take advantage of rounding.
