Shining in the Darkness: Old-School Charm Wins Again
Sad thing is if u dont focus only on main quest u wil get overleveled and will kill things with 2/3 hits. Its sad and game seems boring from now on. No challange. Difficulty lvl in this game doesnt exist. Its eaf
It's one of those games where you can go back and do multiple what if I do this playthroughs. Challenge playthroughs , or job fiesta playthroughs.
So true
0:40 >no ff6 >japanese gamer opinion discarded
Eh, Final Fantasy has always been more popular in the West
@rpg_haven true, but four higher than six? Maybe it's the age of respondents, as 10 and 7 are so high. But that wouldn't explain 4 being on the list...
My dad used to play it a lot,and I loving watching him playing it . What a memory! I wish there is a remastered edition and more language provided(ENG is not native)
The PS4 version is a remaster!
I really like your list. We seem similar tastes with jrpgs and srpgs with the occasional narrative focused action, or shooter. The SMT games are my some of my favorite, but the latest, V vengeance just does not have the same feel to the rest of the series, even when compared to the game its trying to replicate, Nocturne. Im also glad you didnt spend too much wasted on games you didnt like. I def no to put fe2 off now for some time.
Thanks for watching, man! I love SMT 1, gotta play the rest now :]
My favorite rpg of all time. Huge world, great cast of characters, in depth dialogue, great music, and an epic story.
Thanks❤
Happy to help
The open world was the best part but after reaching altissia the game falls appart by taking away the freedom it gets you used to. The story was rushed so bad and the combat just wasn't good. As much as I wanted to love it (played since the duscae demo) I just couldn't and I wouldn't recommend it because it's at least 50 hours of time you could spend on something better.
Falcom on PC Engine/Turbografx was amazing for me. I didn't think it could get any better at the time lol - LOH and Ys were given so much love by Hudson it blew my brains out. Even time I see the intro for Ys Book I and II I just have to stop and watch... LOH just pops. Mechanics work decently. Game rewards you for exploring. Its just a great game.
Falcom's weaker games are approximately 1000 x more interesting than most other titles. Their pioneering work in the 80's set the stage for what JRPG means today. They even made interesting text/visual novel adventures. EGG Console on Nintendo Switch is a cheap/functional way of playing Falcom's classics if you don't have a huge amount of time to spare. Decent quality of life options mitigate some of the negatives you raised in your vid. Falcom NEED to revisit their 80's/early 90's titles with a physical compilation and some additional videos/content. A collector's edition with physical bits and pieces would be an instant pre-order for me. Think 'Gold Master' like what Digital Eclipse did with Atari. I have been a Falcom fanboy for around 30 years at this point. Just wish they would remaster Garharv trilogy again. The PSP games were done dirty by the translators of the time.
Thanks for the insights! What I wouldn't give to have been there back when these games were new

very weird for someone who thinks all non whites in the USA should be deported to make a video about games made by foreigners. you okay buddy?
This game is the best I like it in nes I have to complete love it love it
Huge open world with day-night cycle and monsters everywhere coming out at night with only the tent being a safe haven, weather with rain fog sun and more, perfect monster hunts - this was the best (and most Witcher3-esque) Final Fantasy ever made. Only good memories! I have the Steelbook for PS4 and bought it on Steam too. One of the best games ever made.
why are you playing FOREIGN games if you're american? are you not a patriot? why do you love the japanese so much? we should deport you for encouraging sick foreign immigrant culture
Great video! I wish that you would also mention the platform of each game that you talk about. But it's so cool how many games you played, and how you can remember so much about each game to make this video! 😃
Good idea, I'll try to remember to do that for my next one
I've always thought lower numbers were best. Big numbers look "impressive" but I find that I scratch the surface and it really tends to shut down thinking about what the bigger numbers actually mean. With smaller numbers, It's easier to do the math in your head and easier to conceptualize, and ultimately that means what is being communicated is more meaningful. This is definitely an advantage DQ has over other RPGs.
Well said, couldn't agree more
Final Fantasy V took a long time for me to appreciate. My first playthrough, I felt like I had to master the wind crystal jobs before getting the Water Crystal jobs, and so on. That playthrough was a massive, boring, never-ending grind and I didn't even make it past Karnak. Then for my next few attempts, I felt like I had to find a great place to grind and rush there and master most of the jobs. That was not quite as terrible, but I did all of the grinding at once and that eventually killed that run for me. (Jericol cave, and then when I was more sophisticated, Galuf's castle were endpoints for those runs). It wasn't until I decided that I wasn't going to master more than 3 jobs for any character that I ever made it to the end. After that, I liked it a lot, and have gotten to the end a few times.
Nice! I like that the game is flexible enough to allow all of those play styles
I personally found bianca distasteful - nera is great but i was caught between nera and deborah - i just thought that nera would be better for the children gen imo, nera has the best chats - she's a bit like my wife was when we first got married until i helped build her confidence - and i see nera grow like i saw my wife, it's hard not to love her, lol only thing that bothers me about dq 5 - you're aware of what happens when you're stoned, but your wife isn't, to her, no time has passed (granted, neither of you aged, but found that inconsistent)
What a wild coincidence. I was just playing the saturn release of Dragon Slayer last night, and this shows up in my feed today.
Game is terrible. Had it in the 90s. Gave up due to soft locking myself. Tried it again a few days ago. What a pile of crap. Every fcking thing poisons you. The mazes are long and annoying and the frequent encounters make it unbearable to explore. Having to talk to npcs in a specific order was lame. The fact there are line 15 enemies and they just palette swap them with the same attacks sucked. No idea what swords or armor to buy and with how limited money is you can easily buy garbage. The spells don't have descriptions and that sucks as well. Having to fight 4 of everything in the end was meh. Now I know why I walked away from this back in the day. If they toned down the encounters and made it so that you couldn't attack multiple times in a row or get attacked multiple times in a row by the same enemies it would have been better.
Can't please 'em all. Thanks for sharing
V and Tactics are my favorites because of the job systems
I'm heavily biased when it comes to this title. Being my favorite JRPG, I tend to overlook the tedium or lack of major customization in the game. Yes, you can't customize your monsters, but with ~80 to capture in the remake, you can have multiple different combinations of party set ups by the end. Having a liquid metal slime is super rare, but when I got one by accident I was super extatic. It's like winning the lottery!😂 As for it being optional, I appreciate being able to catch monsters at all. I've done a run without them. The middle section before you get hitched and the tower before fighting Kon (the horse guy) are the hardest challenges in the game without monsters. The story isn't perfect, nor is the soundtrack. But they both bring a wholsome sense of adventure and familial warmth to it, and I haven't felt that in any other RPG except maybe Xenoblade Chronicles or Chrono trigger. Another thing I'd like to touch on is the Casino. If you go for the king metal sword, you'll have the best weapon in the entire game from the time you get out of that abby to the underworld, where it finally gets outclassed by an endgame staff. It basically eliminates grinding, oddly enough. If you do grind, the only times I've found where you *need to* are for around 10 minutes at the very start of the game (up to around level 6) and at the very end for about 30 minutes, depending on the party composition of your choice. An old pre-Chrono Trigger JRPG where you don't need to grind for 90% of the game? Sign me up! The characters also have their own depth even if they don't all play major roles. Like the villagers from the sticks hating you to forgiving you, or Nera/Debora's father having a reason to offer his daughter up like a courtship prize. You hit a lot of points on the game and made my evening with this. I look forward to your future reviews on other RPG's, and I hope you have a wonderful day. Sorry for the long comment. I enjoy DQ5 too much. 😅
I enjoyed reading this, thanks for writing! Personally I'm too impatient for the casinos in Dragon Quest games hahah
Going to watch this later, and make another comment on here. I love DQ5 very much, and consider it to be my 4th favorite game ever made. There was a moment in the game that practically saved my life and moved me to tears. This is a game that, if you enjoy storytelling and subtle worldbuilding, will turn boys into men, so to speak. 😅
Ignore 16 he says nonchalantly
Kweh❤
why is your game running at 2fps though
It was a problem with my capture setup, sorry for that
4's music and graphics are just beautiful
New subscriber. You have a positive aura and you truly love JRPGs
Thank you!
Wait... you could kill the statues with level 5 doom??? Good God. I spent waaaaay too much time actually trying to kill them. It's not even a good AP spot to grind, but I thought it was on my first playthrough and spent like an entire month mastering jobs down there.
I'm pretty sure it's the best spot for a good portion of the game if you do use Doom, but I could be wrong
@@rpg_haven With the L.5 Doom yeah most likely. I think my usual grind spot as of recent playthroughs (it's been a bit) was around outside the library? I think you can get 6-10 AP. But before the worlds merge this basement is definitely the best place. I do seem to recall grinding here before that event
I am a huge fan of ff5 could be my favourite. The customisation is sooo good
Final Fantasy fans really take their franchise for granted. as a big fantasy lover since i was 7 when i discovered these games with 16 i instantly fell in love
Good to see new fans of the series! Welcome
This game is my JRPG childhood. It's so sad they not continue the series 😢
Videos like this one are what make UA-cam so great. Incredible depth and breadth of JRPG knowledge man. Definitely found some games I wanna try.
Thanks for watching! Hope you find some new favorites
man i remember renting this and then buying it. i still own it, replayed it a few years ago and it blew me away how well it held up. i love the crafting system
It's unique for sure
Finished the game this month. Hated it. Random battle every 10 secs. Trial and error difficulty. Try-hard bosses that can wipe your entire party with 1 attack if not prepared.
Best game FFX❤
Hello Raven, I was playing Romancing Saga 2 and I had a hard time with the battle system, such as leveling up, for example. And I thought that you could help me give me some strategy to move forward or some algorithm. By the way, your videos are very good ❤

@rpg_haven Thank you!!
I feel like such a noob. 150 is epic! Great perspectives!
We're all noobs until we're not
I loved this title. Beat it on PS1 first, though. I hold it in higher regard than FF1 and 3, actually. I just wish the boss battles were unique enemies and not difficult enemies you'll fight later on
A lot of old RPGs do that. I think it's kinda cool-it shows you how far you've come, like bosses that used to be hard are now a piece of cake. But you're right, it also makes them less distinctive
cool
Wasn’t this supposed to originally be dark cloud 3?
I think so
This was my first Phantasy Star. It was one of my first RPGs - I love it. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but the music still plays in my head regularly.
What a nice accent you have there buddy......Estonia?
I'm American
There's a couple reasons why I think it has the reputation it has 1) it is a "lighter" friends focused plot (outside of Bartz having some initial attraction to Lenna and even more apparent attraction to Faris that he never really pursues in either case) while 4 and 6 had more emphasis on love related subplots (shippers are the most vocal part of a fandom, followed closely by actual players from what I've seen). 2) 4 and 6 not only got localized on original hardware but had the benefit of a Ted Woolsey localization in their SNES localizations, which generated a lot of nostalgia. 5, much like 2 and 3, was exclusive to Japan up until the PSX version if we don't count the fan translation. 3) The PSX version botches a few names due to taking notes from the store fan translation (citation needed as I got this from another comment) 4) the tone overall is much more upbeat than 4 and 6, making some view it as a "breather episode" of the franchise. 5) the game (especially in English, especially the GBA localization) has... A few references that are either liked or disliked depending on who you ask. 6) the only sequel it got was a... Questionable OVA called Legend of the Crystals that takes place centuries in the future (most of it does anyway), and to put it simply the FF5 crew deserved better than what the OVA did to the crew. It wasn't as bad as Final Fantasy Spirits Within (shudders) in my book, but it sure as hell wasn't Advent Children quality as far as sequels are concerned. Personally I think it's the definitive example of a "classic JRPG" along with Dragon Quest in general, which was originally localized as Dragon Warrior. FF5 is deserves better than its current reputation, deserves better than the OVA, and honestly I kinda favor the GBA version due to the added content, even if the Pixel Remaster (which is based on the Super Famicom version and therefore doesn't have the GBA content) does have better presentation.
Dragon Quest 6 is a great comparison, honestly. Both games stick to their franchise's tried-and-true formula, only expanding on it a bit, while upping the worldbuilding and exploration a ton. Both have good stories but are more about the fun of the mechanics and reveling in being RPGs, above all
