Damn I've watched this show now twice and never thought of that. Really good point! I like to how Ray how some humanity and compassion by letting him pass and not going the cliche Hollywood route of saying something and then shooting him again.
it's also to show him growing, there's another scene at the very beginning of the show where he makes that guy dig his grave, and he shoots him mid-sentence while the guys pleading for his life, showing his professionalism and lack of compassion. WIth this guy it's different because they're similar in character, but also Ray has grown a bit since then the guy had holes in all the wrong places, but it's easy to imagine that Ray would've let him live if there was a way. Which might be the first time in the show that he would do such a thing.
No, it’s pity. That man made a horrible mistake. He didn’t mean to, he just didn’t know any better. He was just a criminal. Contrast that with the last guy on the show who killed the old couple, there was no kindness from Ray whatsoever.
Graham is played by Ian Roberts - an ex-nrl hard man and the first openly gay nrl player (during the 90s, no less). He’s not a trained actor but I think we can all agree he absolutely nails this scene.

This performance was amazing from both of these guys, one of my favourite scenes in the whole series. The way the 2 parties slipped into a gentle conversation once the threat was gone made me feel like they were just having a chat in the line at Bunnings.... Without a doubt the most underrated series to be made in Australia
I'm loving this series and this scene has had the most effect on me. Ray meeting another 'bad guy' with a sense of honour and integrity. Hated seeing this guy die - his first thought being that of getting his 'boys' killed. So good, very intensly emotional, great acting, very clever directing as it leaves you wanting to have seen more of this character. Just excellent!

I tell everyone about this show!! Always a little jealous of them getting to watch it for the first time not knowing what they are in for! You can always tell when Ray hates the way things go down. He wouldnt change it, but you can tell when he respects even an adversary. This show is amazing on so many levels. I think it just fell under the radar in the states. What an incredible thing to be a part of this show, well done mate!!

Ian Roberts the rugby league hard man? DA MAN! Loved that dude growing up. Manly had a pack of absolute monsters and this dude led the charge! The real testament to his toughness would've been coming out what with the stigma and all that.
Brilliant scene. Great performances by both actors. I have to think Scott Ryan knows more about violence and how career criminals operate than most people writing for US TV. Saw that in S1 with the acknowledgement that if you punch someone hard in the face, you're going to bruise your hand. You don't stand and trade for ages. In this scene there is no grandstanding or clever one liners. At first you're waiting for Ray and his guys to show who is best but then when Graham tries to help his wounded mate you see that's all he really cared about, making some money for his boys and getting them home in one piece. Everyone I recommend this show to loves it and wonders why they never heard of it. If there is an award for most underrated show, this is it. The show just hits different. (Thankfully Gary is there to lift the mood from time to time. We all need a mate like Gary.)
This show and Wilfred sums up Australian talent and I love it. The Aussies have a unique humor and this scene is one of the best I've ever seen. So well acted and presented making it so realistic. Thanks.

One of so many really powerful moments in this series. You go into this show with certain expectations for a half hour episode and it gets you by the throat every time.
Mate you were awesome in this! Your character genuinely struck me as a very scary individual, which further added to Ray's mystique when he took you out (seemingly) easily.
There are moments in this show where Ray’s facial expression changes for just a split second, like a part of him has just died-when his friend jumped off the cliff, when Boff was killed in the shootout in the woods, when he’s standing there watching the house burn after his brother’s death, Dave’s death, and this moment here. This guy is a little older than Ray (or at least looks it), and was leading the same kind of life. I think Ray saw the potential of what could be the end for him in this interaction. If you remember he doesn’t even take his share of the $ from this, he gives it all to Dave and Gaz
I have watched this scene a thousand times and it's the most powerful and emotional scene, I have ever seen. A man near death realises in made a wrong decision and it cost him dearly. It cost him his life and his boys. But the way Ray also reacts his also just as power full. One day I will get to watch Mr in-between. Just for this scene alone. Plus when Ray realised that Graham was an honourable man who blamed only him self, you could see on rays face how it affected him.
Blown away I've only just come across this gem of a show. i typically don't find much interest in much Aussie television, even as an Aussie myself. But this was phenomenal, i have since shared the series with most of my family who have loved it. To be honest i wasn't familiar with any of your work prior to this Ian, not a sports person myself, but your performance in this was so grounded and authentic i had to figure out who the actor was behind your character, and here we are. All the best with your future work mate.
Great show. Great acting. Great script. The ending where Ian Roberts is dying says so much about real Australian culture…. Ray could have shot him like would have happened in every Hollywood movie but he chose to let him die peacefully. He showed humanity.
My favourite scene/episode! The humble exchange between you and Ray at the end caught me completely by surprise and after such epic action I found myself suddenly grounded and feeling very conflicted.. and I absolutely loved it You NAILED the role mate, bravo
Yeah, it was Ray's humility about the whole situation that really stood out. No quippy dialogue or over the top performing just acceptance that the whole thing is finished now. And yes, you nailed that death scene perfectly. It was bittersweet to see you go out.
This was an awesome series, still can’t figure out why this didn’t get more attention or sequels. Love the Aussie feel of it too, lived there and traveled that great country back in 1995-1996. Seeing that red dirt just takes me back.

Only after reading up about you did I realize you're a rugby player (not big into that, sorry). With your performance here, an honest to god emotional hardass, caring about his team mates, doing a job (which sucks), and then dying , with regret...honestly that performance was in my top 5 performance on tv. Kudos to you Ian, that scene gutted me. In a good way.
I have absolutely devoured the first two seasons in weeks. Can’t wait to see Season 3 and the Magician. Ray, Brucey, Gaz… they’re all great. I recommend this show to everyone at work.
I remember watching this episode and in particular this very scene and it left me breathless,in my opinion it was from an acting point of view by far the best dialouge of the entire series ,incredibly fluid and very natural ,the big fella on the ground didnt seem to be acting at all he was dying right in front of my face and it was chilling ,next couple of days it was etched into my brain ,be interested to see you play a main role in a big budget movie ,id pay to see it ,well done
Bad luck that this series doesn't seem to be played through out in Germany here, at least atm. On the other hand, it might be a really good point. Everybody bores me with Netflix, Breaking Bad, Lucifer etc. Doesn't watch TV since three years about, at all. Better to find a little acting treasure abroad, then to always idolize Peaky Blinders like everybody else does. If you ever have a chance to act on the Ohnesorg-Theatre in Hamburg, or the Burgtheater in Vienna, take it pls. Pure acting. Like a rough Diamond. Thank you!
Agreed with the comments here. That was some acting right there. I havent seen much of this show, but it so distinctly aussie. You really convinced the viewer of your characters final moments and processing that fact, and realizing that the past had no relevance because your character had no future. Bravo sir..
Awesome writing and acting to humanize criminals so well. In the abstract you think they get what they deserve but they're people with loved ones, friends etc.
I like the recurring issue of people who took on debt, or bought things, basically refusing to pay despite the fact they have the money right there with them. Completely convinced they don't have too because they are entitled to take from anyone they please. You can see rays face as he thinks "Every damn time, they're all the same" followed by a beating and the question "why didn't you just pay me when i asked?".
Absolutely brilliant show hope this will be reprised in the future superb acting and realistic story lines wholly enjoyable a must watch for those who haven't already
damn this show! every episode breaks my heart but it also forces me crave for more! what a masterpiece! this scene in particular - you should have just handed the money... you already have it. what a waste... :'(
You really put into a different narrative. At first when we see your character. We just think its another another person trying to be smart. But then at your last moments in the struggle. I think it was a brilliant way of saying you played the hand you were dealt but above all you were human in the end and it was just business.
I saw this scene last night and it moved me to tears. Like Ray, I went very quickly from anger to regret once we dwelled on the aftermath. Thinking back to the first scene when they discussed beating Ray up rather than killing him, you felt disgusted that the situation was so aggressively escalated, to the point where no one really won and only sadness remained. Thank you for such a well done performance Ian, it has really struck me. Been feeling sad all day about it.

This is arguably the most pivotal dialogue in the whole show. Between a minor character and the protagonist. This show really is one of a kind. Bravo

You nailed this scene, Ian. To me it's one of the most memorable scenes of the entire show.
Simply brilliant series.
You really put into a different narrative. At first when we see your character. We just think its another another person trying to be smart. But then at your last moments in the struggle. I think it was a brilliant way of saying you played the hand you were dealt but above all you were human in the end and it was just business.
Good on ya Ian, top show top acting great great series, they should make more of this like they did to Animal Kingdom

This goes without saying but what a good acting scene even though you died the memory lives on
I saw this scene last night and it moved me to tears. Like Ray, I went very quickly from anger to regret once we dwelled on the aftermath. Thinking back to the first scene when they discussed beating Ray up rather than killing him, you felt disgusted that the situation was so aggressively escalated, to the point where no one really won and only sadness remained. Thank you for such a well done performance Ian, it has really struck me. Been feeling sad all day about it.
