well they were snivelling, self-vindicating, wife beating little cry baby wankers. so it is hardly surprising as he was a real gangster. the guy hosting the group was even worse than those attending in my view. a typical judgemental, "sexual predator supporting" government control freak. he hated ray because ray was the real face of public justice, not the police or any other government flunkies. ray basically embarrassed the others there.

The other great thing about those scenes is how they start out trying to be remorseful about being violent assholes, but then they start cracking jokes and backing each other up on their reasoning behind assaulting people, basically just broing out on their shared interest of being toxic pricks, and the group leader is too milquetoast to reign them in

This show is what I tell non-Aussies to watch when they wanna know how we actually speak to each other. None of that Crocodile Dundee "Throw another shrimp on the barbie" shit. To an Australian, the dialogue just feels natural, like conversations I've heard and had thousands of times. The script just nails how we talk, all the little nuances and quirks, the slang, the dry humour, everything. it's my favourite part of the show, it's just so brutally Australian in every way and that's one of the reasons I love it so much.

The episode where the child gets snatched from the shopping centre was one of the most chilling ones I've ever watched. Any parent who has had that heart rending process of trying to find your kid in a shopping centre when they have wandered off knows that feeling and his reaction to that was so real, it was incredible to watch. The end of that episode related to the inner feelings of any parents thoughts on how they would react to anyone molesting their kids. Incredibly written and gut wrenching to watch. Highly recommend the series.

I'm a born and raised New Yorker- grew up in a tough neighborhood in the 50's through 70's. That time and place, was one where if you said the wrong thing- to the wrong person, you'd get your ass kicked. No guns, but the local hoods weren't killers, just violent. Although random acts of senseless violence were common, we just lived 'normal' lives. Ray Shoesmith, has the kind of scruples that I would almost loved to have had back then, dealing with the assholes in my neighborhood. I think that's part of his strong appeal, his willingness and ability to just fuck people up that don't behave properly, or that have screwed him over. Many of us have someone in our past that we'd like to go back in time and 'take care of.'
An EXCELLENT show, and kudos to Scott Ryan for creating such a great character.

Ray is a type of guy we fear, but we respect and sometimes undertand yours whys. Very good suporting actors. The Ray-Gary friendship is fantastic, Gary really trust Ray, the later the payoff of Gary is invaluable. that ending scene in the taxi with the RUN song made me fucking howl with laughter when I watched the show. The whole show itself really just embodies something that I'm pretty sure I'm misremembering Chopper say, which is why I was glad to hear you reference him since I had the same thought about the show.
The show itself just feels like one of Choppers "big yarns" he likes to tell, like that interview where he just takes a reporter around and tells his version of where and how he killed people a month or so before he died. That and Ryan Scott fucking perfected Choppers big "I'm about to fuck something" grin.

Man, this show... I can't remember the last time I watched something and was so utterly amazed, constantly, by how good it was. It has become so rare to feel "respected as an audience member". And not having everything explained to you all the time, not having everything talked about, or clearly displayed, leaving you to understand a scene, a moment, an emotion, a reaction yourself, because the writer and director trust you to GET IT? Satisfying as hell!
This show, for me, is the only one with 0 unnecessary bullshit. No fillers, no explaining, no moral preaching, no "in your face" stuff, no unrealistic interpersonal conflicts... The people in the show all felt real. In hollywood shows I often have the problem that characters seem to have very artificial flaws and shortcomings to create plot for the show. In Mr In Between people are... People. And the stuff that happens is LIFE happening, not enforced cringe drama due to infatilized adults that never learned how to communicate.
In many ways this was the most "grown up" show I have seen... and by that I do not mean the violence. I'd really love to see Scott create other shows, because I suspect the guy just has a talent for entertaining stories that feel grounded, funny and realistic, the same way Tarantino has a talent for absurd action.
And because the show didn't make trauma or grief the centerpoint, the moments where those things actually showed up felt so, so much more impactful.

What a ride. Like many people I never wanted it to end. It's that good.

What is really sad about Ray's girlfriend breaking up with him was her misplaced distrust. She simultaneously didn't know how dangerous he was and how off base her judgment of him was. The abused should feel safe and want to protect themselves, but Ray is literally the dangerous kind of guy who would protect her and never hit her. What felt out of character about that scene with her brother being tossed through the glass was that Ray knows how to hold it in until it's the right time to express his will. Maybe it was quitting the cigarettes. But you can understand her reaction.

"A dim sim is Chinese-inspired meat and vegetable dumpling-style snack food, popular in Australia and to a lesser extent in New Zealand. It was popularized in 1945 by a Chinese immigrant in Melbourne who originally came from Guangdong, William Chen Wing Young, the father of Australian celebrity chef, author and TV personality Elizabeth Chong. The name derives from the pronunciation diim syiim in Toisanese, the predominant dialect spoken at the time by Central Melbourne's Chinese community.
The commercial snack food normally consists of minced meat, cabbage, and seasoning, encased in a wrapper similar to that of a traditional siu mai dumpling. They are typically cylindrical, or sometimes a larger, globular shape. They can be steamed or deep fried, and are commonly dressed or dipped in soy sauce, or sweet chilli sauce. An alternative way of cooking dim sims is to barbecue them, by cutting the dim sim in half lengthwise and placing it on a hot barbecue"

One note: The submachine gun Ray uses is a Sterling 9mm, the successor to the vintage Sten gun you referenced. They're often mistaken for one another because they both use side-mounted magazines. The Sterling is recognized as one of the best ever while the Sten--despite it's World War II service--was less than reliable and primitive; its manufacturers originally made bedsprings and frames in England and happened to have the necessary tooling to make those things.

With a low population there’s only a limited amount of actors…and it’s not like America where you can get a foreigner to do the accent…our accent is to hard to do….to be fair.

@Bowriverblues That is part to blame buy l think it's name recognition and because they constantly want it in their productions, there is a push to keep the same top actors in nearly every show.
At time on ads they've used the term "introducing" insert new actors name. Which l don't think is a bad thing but l am sure there are many talented actors that deserve a go but miss out because of the revolving door to m9re well know ones

Show is so dang good!

I kind of like the idea that they had a set amount of seasons/episodes from the start. It means you can end the experience with a feeling of "yep the story is complete everything has been said and done" when you drag it out the show either gets cancelled on a cliff hangar or the story is incomplete, or as the seasons drag on the content becomes worse and worse.

I've just binge watched all three series after getting hooked by some highlights on UA-cam. Like everyone else, I was thoroughly impressed with the stories and the performance. Scott Ryan and Nash Edgerton deserve huge praise for this work and they demonstrate exactly what makes a story great (and what's absent from so much output today): good writing, good acting and good direction.

One of my favourite things about some crime media that Mr Inbetween nails is the quiet moments where characters can talk like and be regular people. The scene of Ray and Gary discussing the Bond actors was just as engaging as a gunfight.
Also, being an Aussie myself, hearing our slang used naturally and appropriately was so refreshing.
