I just had to rewatch the video over again- very clear. Very helpful. I was a little bit distracted how pretty you are. My thesis statement is somewhere along the lines of granting amnesty to DACA recipients of good character and immigrants with little children born in the US. Also, of good reputation. Right!teachers dont teach us and make us go to college without any experience! Some teachers really suck man! My English teacher in grade 11 didn’t even teach us how to write a essay outline and in grade 12 we had write a whole essay without any understanding of one/ it.

Theoretically, it is the anchor. However, a thesis can be modified upon completion of the argument. Sometimes we discover we made a different argument than we intended.

I have a learning disorder that makes academic writing quite difficult for me and I have a tough english tutor that challenges me every week in my preparation for college at 34 years old.
So I've had to get very creative and have many tricks up my sleeve to make the learning easier for me. I am so thrilled I found your video as I have been struggling with thesis statements.

I really appreciate the content of your video. I recently went back to college, I haven't had to write anything on a academic level for close to 20 years. Going back to college has made me realize just how inadequate my high school education was. This video explained more to me about how and what a thesis statement is compared to what was being taught to us in class over the last 4 weeks.
I came here to say thank you. After this weird year that 2020 has become, I am going back to school at 25 after not being in an English class for 8 years. I do not remember how to cite or format in MLA, how to make a thesis statement, or properly structure an essay. This coupled with all of my classes being an online format (no lectures, just assignments, discussion posts, ect) have made it extremely difficult to learn and get back on track.

Well done Ariel, yes that's correct. I also tell my students that a thesis statement is the anchor for all their topic sentences and that often their topic sentences must evolve from their thesis statement and must all tie back to it. I really like the compass analogy too ;)

I am loving the new series! I'm in my first year of University studying English Literature & I have an essay to write on technology's influence on the use and form of the English Language. These videos have been super helpful! My thesis statement is a work in progress. Currently it's: Technology both expands and condenses the English language - it needs some fleshing out! I'm going to be doing some interviews and incorporating the results in my essay which is really exciting!

This is very helpful! I’ve been tutoring academic writing for the last three years, and I like your example of the thesis being like a compass. I will have to use that in the future!
As I got into my final years of uni I started structuring my thesis statements as "if...then...because" statements (before trimming them down in edits to be less wordy/more concise). It's not a perfect science but it was always easy for working out the core of my idea before trimming it down, I always found thesis statements the hardest part of any paper

This is awsome... At the moment I'm writing my first thesis ever and I'm pretty scared, I just don't know where to start! I have already written my project and it has been accepted by my teacher, but now I have so many doubts! I really needed this. I broke both of my wrists 2ish months ago so I was absent from school for a couple days. That was the day my teacher explained thesis statements. I thought I knew what they were, but I didn't, so on my writing I would always get marked down for not stating it. I'm a French student doing OIB program in history in English. I've always struggled doing essay in History every since high school and always had bad grades at my essays. I think thesis statement was one of the thing that I really struggled with but with this video, it's clear as water!
But the biggest problem I think I have is the writing itself. My history teacher often says that my essay doesn't flow and make it difficult to read...I'm going to see right now your video on structure, pretty sure it will help me a lot ^^
