I do the same technique as you, the part where you said that you do two separate word documents where one is for the plan and the other for the actual assignment. I started doing this for my second year and my grades actually improved a lot. It really Is useful. Also, cite this for me is an excellent reference web page too.
If you find cite this for me useful, I definitely recommend Mendeley. You can transfer any pdf from google onto the software through an extension, it automatically formats citations for you based off the information it finds in the pdf as well as can find the website you first found the pdf. :) Not to mention, there is a section for notebooks where you can make notes on what you are reading, add annotations to the pdf and highlight them, all in one place.
When I was in first year I struggled to get a first. I wondered why was falling short all the time. Then one piece of work I had to write a critical review, I looked at around 50 pieces of primary research on the relationship between diabetes and sensorineural hearing loss and pulled each study apart looking at the sample size, methods, results and stats. Convinced I was going to get a 2.2 at best I reluctantly submitted it. About a month later the grades were in... I scored 85%. Ever since, I followed the structure I used for my review in every piece of work, and written exam... I ended up graduating with a first. I would always say to students, get into the habit of conducting reviews, they help your writing. The best marks synthesise original thoughts, they ask questions and try to give answers based on the evidence presented.

My essay writing is so all over the place you could diagnose it with adhd. Although I don’t have that diagnosis my essays certainly do! I have a habit of writing three different sections at once, flipping between them all before any of them are finished. I highlight different topics with different colours in word. It is a mess! I really big mess. This has been really helpful. Thank you :)
I had similair issues, understanding the topics, or brief was never an issues but researching a collecting sources then draft always overwhelmed me. the best approach is the take each section of the essay question and answer it in piecemeal, give authority and reference then move to next point, once you done that for several section compile a 2nd draft and make a main body. Then introduce the subject and conclude your finding from the body. Reference should be done. Hope that helps
So is mine unless I'm writing a research report that's super structured anyway, so there's no much room to go off track. But free form essays really get me, I always get the worst marks in those because I'm so all over the place. I'm going to try it this way and see if it helps though.

I'm a US first-year writing teacher and you have some really good tips in here. I agree with another comment that talked about using your school's library databases as well, especially as you are just getting started. I also like using Google docs so I can have research anywhere. I'd also recommend copying over your quotes and putting them in quotes so that you can compare them when you are drafting the paper to make sure you are paraphrasing and quoting properly. I see a lot of issues with students thinking they paraphrased but in fact they really used the majority of the original source.

I have just submitted my thesis, finishing up my work in uni! I am happy to see that I have a similar essay writing method with you, which helped a lot and made things easier for me. However, I do not like using reference links etc. for my work, it just becomes time consumig. If you search the article name in Google Scholar, you can citate it directly by clinking " icon, copy paste it into your references and put the same number both to text and the references :)

If you're doing MLA intext citations, noting the (Author, Year) in your notes and outline can really help. When you get to writing it out, you've got the intext citation right there. Also, saving the paper by Author, Year can really help keep track of what info came from what source.

A great handy trick that I recently discovered when researching is favoriting your research sources to a folder on chrome. Adding them to a folder you can open them on any device when you are logged into your google account and you can open all tabs by right-clicking the folder, super easy. I often find myself having 50+ tabs open when I am starting research and it slows down my pc so this really helps when I have multiple essays on the go at once.
I second this! For every paper I write I make a bookmark folder for that assignment in particular to keep track of my sources. This definitely helps when it comes to references so I make sure I don't miss any.
These are very valuable tips, making our way of writing much better. It's really useful to separate two documents, one for the plan and one for the real, this makes it much easier to see things, and to separate them in a more organized way using the essay notes for writing. thank you for everything!

I'm a mature student and I did not actually manage to get my GCSEs until my mid 20s. I then completed an access course in Nursing and finished with distinctions. However, I've found essay writing at uni to be extremely difficult. I'm retaking 2nd year Psychology (not to do with failing; I couldn't attend for most of the year) and I'm trying to get my 'head back in the game' as it were. I know I'm capable of a good grade, the majority of my marks were a 1st towards the end of first year but mostly in lab reports. I have just one question, how fast is your internet speed? I was almost drooling as I watched the speed at which your web pages appeared on your laptop screen. I'm guessing your internet is provided through fibre optics, am I right? When I was writing essays (at home) for my undergrad degree (in law) my internet speed was 10 mbs; I still bear the psychological scars.

This was intriguing to watch despite myself having graduated a year ago from biomed! 😅 Some really good tips, but just wanted to add that for citations/references, using RefWorks in the manner you described can sometimes be really long-winded and time-consuming. Instead, I'd HIGHLY recommend downloading the *Google Scholar Button* extension to your browser. it works by clicking the button and either searching for a paper to cite directly in the extension OR copy+pasting a paper from anywhere, then, clicking the quotation marks which reveals a complete reference in 5 different referencing styles (inc. Harvard & Vancouver). You also have the option to directly export it to RefWorks and other referencing platforms! Alsoooo, the *Weava Highlighter* chrome extension is a lifesaver paired with the button. It allows you to highlight online articles and PDFs which you can then organise into folders/add notes/export+cite sources. I used these extensions during my final year for my dissertation and citing/referencing was an absolute breeze!

Just a tip for anyone researching for the first time - it may actually be better for you NOT to search only for full text because you may miss out on good papers that are accessible elsewhere. Especially if you have access to certain journals with your University. That is a tip our Uni gave us.

I have a habit of writing three different sections at once, flipping between them all before any of them are finished. I highlight different topics with different colours in word. It is a mess! I really big mess. This has been really helpful. Thank you :)

Same here, I got ADHD and dyspraxia so my structure is not good
I had similair issues, understanding the topics, or brief was never an issues but researching a collecting sources then draft always overwhelmed me. the best approach is the take each section of the essay question and answer it in piecemeal, give authority and reference then move to next point, once you done that for several section compile a 2nd draft and make a main body. Then introduce the subject and conclude your finding from the body. Reference should be done. Hope that helps

So is mine unless I'm writing a research report that's super structured anyway, so there's no much room to go off track. But free form essays really get me, I always get the worst marks in those because I'm so all over the place. I'm going to try it this way and see if it helps though.

I'm a US first-year writing teacher and you have some really good tips in here. I agree with another comment that talked about using your school's library databases as well, especially as you are just getting started. I also like using Google docs so I can have research anywhere. I'd also recommend copying over your quotes and putting them in quotes so that you can compare them when you are drafting the paper to make sure you are paraphrasing and quoting properly. I see a lot of issues with students thinking they paraphrased but in fact they really used the majority of the original source.

I have just submitted my thesis, finishing up my work in uni! I am happy to see that I have a similar essay writing method with you, which helped a lot and made things easier for me. However, I do not like using reference links etc. for my work, it just becomes time consumig. If you search the article name in Google Scholar, you can citate it directly by clinking " icon, copy paste it into your references and put the same number both to text and the references :)

If you're doing MLA intext citations, noting the (Author, Year) in your notes and outline can really help. When you get to writing it out, you've got the intext citation right there. Also, saving the paper by Author, Year can really help keep track of what info came from what source.

14:17 - I misheard that as "torch your university" instead of "talk to.."
A great handy trick that I recently discovered when researching is favoriting your research sources to a folder on chrome. Adding them to a folder you can open them on any device when you are logged into your google account and you can open all tabs by right-clicking the folder, super easy. I often find myself having 50+ tabs open when I am starting research and it slows down my pc so this really helps when I have multiple essays on the go at once.
I second this! For every paper I write I make a bookmark folder for that assignment in particular to keep track of my sources. This definitely helps when it comes to references so I make sure I don't miss any.

In the US, we did essays on medical trials and presented them during journal workshops. It was just so tedious. Imagine if you got stuck in presenting the METHODS section of a journal. yuck.

I'm a mature student and I did not actually manage to get my GCSEs until my mid 20s. I then completed an access course in Nursing and finished with distinctions. However, I've found essay writing at uni to be extremely difficult. I'm retaking 2nd year Psychology (not to do with failing; I couldn't attend for most of the year) and I'm trying to get my 'head back in the game' as it were. I know I'm capable of a good grade, the majority of my marks were a 1st towards the end of first year but mostly in lab reports. Thanks for the video, it is making much more sense than others that I have watched and other explanations. Being dyslexic I can find it quite hard to asborb information but you've really stripped it back and made is accessible for everyone. Thanks so much.

I have just one question, how fast is your internet speed? I was almost drooling as I watched the speed at which your web pages appeared on your laptop screen. I'm guessing your internet is provided through fibre optics, am I right?
When I was writing essays (at home) for my undergrad degree (in law) my internet speed was 10 mbs; I still bear the psychological scars.

This was intriguing to watch despite myself having graduated a year ago from biomed! 😅 Some really good tips, but just wanted to add that for citations/references, using RefWorks in the manner you described can sometimes be really long-winded and time-consuming. Instead, I'd HIGHLY recommend downloading the *Google Scholar Button* extension to your browser. it works by clicking the button and either searching for a paper to cite directly in the extension OR copy+pasting a paper from anywhere, then, clicking the quotation marks which reveals a complete reference in 5 different referencing styles (inc. Harvard & Vancouver). You also have the option to directly export it to RefWorks and other referencing platforms! Alsoooo, the *Weava Highlighter* chrome extension is a lifesaver paired with the button. It allows you to highlight online articles and PDFs which you can then organise into folders/add notes/export+cite sources. I used these extensions during my final year for my dissertation and citing/referencing was an absolute breeze!
