I'm currently a freshman in High School and I've really been wanting to stray from the five-paragraph format. It seems so elementary and I feel like I can't write to my fullest potential when using it. I recently had to do an essay about how an author's life affects their writing (mine was about Mark Twain) and it was the first time I didn't use the five-paragraph! I was really happy with the outcome and felt like it was more mature and cohesive. The next essay I have coming up is a persuasive essay and I get to choose topic (it's supposed to be something world/society related, like a political, social, etc. issue). I'm thinking about doing mine on the "model minority"/Asian stereotyping. I'm excited to write another paper without the five paragraphs!

Reese San Diego YESSS break away from that formula from the beginning! In university I have seen so many people struggle with breaking away from the 5 paragraph essay. We'll have 5 page essays and they'll do one paragraph per page. I wish they wouldn't drill that so much in high school.

Just make sure the teachers don't mind you doing that. I actually had teachers in high school that took marks off for assignments that were longer than they were supposed to be, because that wasn't following instructions. It was incredibly rediculous.

Can you do a video on sentence structure? Like how to use commas,
semicolons, and other things like that? I know that may sound silly but that’s something I never learned in school. And I’m a big reader so I can see how a comma can effective the flow of a sentence, to really convey the writer’s thought accurately.

I always found the five paragraph essay to be really restrictive so learning that we didn't use them in higher ed was such a blessing. And one of the best bits of advice I've gotten from one of my professors on editting is that once you finish your first draft, shift your conclusion to the beginning and start again for revising.
And this really reminds me that I need to get in gear to work on an essay I want to write

My two big essays this semester are my undergrad senior research projects. First one is going to end up being a 20 page paper on Fahrenheit 451. The other is for my history minor and it will be another 20 page research paper on a specific location on the southwest side of my town that I feel deserves more recognition in this city's history. All fun stuff!! I'm loving it.

I'm currently writing an essay about judicial philosophy (government is so exciting i know). something that my comp 1 teacher taught to me my first semester of college is to use a roadmap for my thesis. basically it's your claim plus your reasons listed in an abc/123 format. example: Ariel Bissete is the best UA-camr because a) she is passionate about her content b) she articulates her points eloquently and c) she makes her viewers feel like they have a place where they belong. you then take these points and use them as your topic sentences and before you know it, you're done with your 5 page paper in a couple hours. this has made my college career 100x easier and makes writing my essays a breeze.

Hi Ariel! Thank you so much! In 2 weeks I have a HUGE exam (the first out of 4 in order to become a top level civil servant) and it consists on writing 2 essays in 4 hours, one on current events and the other on social science. They give us the titles and we have to respond to those titles in a coherent well structured text. This was so helpful, even if the exam is in Spanish, it is all perfectly applicable. Muchísimas gracias! I love your videos. Keep up the great work! Xx

You forgot the biggest tip of all: "This is just a practical guide for formatting, but experimentation with the form and layout is also key to academic growth and can be practiced many times throughout a degree, most usually in essays that don't make a big impact to final grades (think of them as a practice-run)."
I just get super bored of academic papers and following prescribed rules like this is literally the reason the academy is becoming so stagnant. My two previous MA essays have really allowed me to push the boundaries of form, the first I used surrealism as a lens to deconstruct myself as an ethnographer and then reconstruct myself as something new. Having surrealism as my anchor and tool for argumentation, I was able to really explore and play with the boundaries of form which my professor found he could not argue against. Then most recently, I wrote a reflection paper on anthropological methodologies in practical environments and was able to use books as imagined worlds which allowed me to critique my own actions by comparing and contrasting with character motivations in stories. I laid it out as if it were a museum guidebook visiting each novel like an exhibition and using my narrative voice to reflect on the implications of these ideas.
Of course, not every degree will have space for this, particularly the science ones, but there will totally be opportunities for fun and style in many arts degrees, particularly the humanities!

This could not have came at a better time. I'm doing a 2000 word essay in my graphic design degree at the moment in university and my question for my essay that I have came up with is, 'What impact has Swiss Design had on the 21st Century?' Could you do an episode on quotes? I struggle to add them into my essay and to make them flow.

You scared me when you mentioned the 5 paragraph essay. I was like "NO, NO PLS DONT-" and then you clarified it's never going to work in university and I sighed with relief.

This is so awesome. Will you be having anything on how to write personal essays or opinion essays? I really would love to be able to write essays like you would see in literary magazines.
