I can safely predict now that when your sons retire and you're in your twilight they will pull out that splitter and use it for their firewood and think, "Gee, dad thanks". I know that because I've thanked my deceased father many, many times for the stuff I got from him that I never thought I would want or need. 🙂
Nice job on the modifications. Looking forward to Part 4. When I built my splitter 50 years ago, I used 2 smaller hydraulic cylinders. When I have wood that splits easily, which is most of the time, I can use 1 cylinder and have a faster cycle time. If I have wood that splits harder, I hook up the second cylinder (takes about 1 minute) and have double the power. The return only ever runs with 1 cylinder, so the return speed is always fast. I used quick couplers to supply the 2nd cylinder so that when I want to use both cylinders it is quick to switch. Thanks for the ideas.
@12:35 I was going to comment on the dual exhaust pointing straight out. I was going to recommend using an elbow to point them downward to send the sound down instead out straight out. The original setup would be louder when you would bend over to pick up wood to split. This improvement in design should reduce the noise while using. I see Dough thought of this idea before any suggestions were needed. "Doug the chief problem solver"
Just a thought…a platform on the split end. Will catch the split wood then you can direct splits into containers vs dropping to ground. Prevents bending over or awkward handling. Could even hinge so can platform can be folded down or a shoot to a container.
Don't need a heat shield if you only run it in the winter. Having someone wait on you right now instead of in a week or two is something that doesn't happen much anymore. Or we have to order the parts.
When you said complete reversal, I was thinking of an adjustable mechanism that will kick out the valve lever on the return stroke. With this modification, you can stop the cylinder just beyond the length of the rounds. I'm planning on doing this with my splitter along with a cradle of some sort.
Great video you should make a table that you could back into that holds the firewood on there and then you don’t need to have it, supported by the splitter, kind of like the table that they have that they have at hard-working man except for just make it a slot that you could drop back this thing into you and you can make the table as big as you want so you don’t have to bend over to pick up all the rounds and pick up all the split firewood
Good! You moved the hitch to the other end. My splitter is set up like this one was. It sucks to operate the splitter without unhooking it from the tow vehicle… which is a huge pain when you’re working out in the woods! You’re pushing wood toward the tailgate and cannot easily put a trailer or wheelbarrow under the production end.
Build a table for it ASAP like you have planned, and also make your engine air diverter removeable. I LOVE standing in the path of the engine’s heated air in the winter months.
Great video on the restoration of the splitter. I would love to see your thought process on building a splitter from scratch. That would make a great series. Splitters with a textured pad on the ram are always nice so they grip the log. That way the log doesn't slip out under pressure and smack you in the arm.
Nice job on the splitter so far Doug. One suggestion, I would not remove the plate on top of the head. It is there to contain the cooling air in the fins on the head.

Nice progress so far Doug. Looks like my first comment got removed?…I tried sharing a video from mighty Mac wood splitter. They have a unique “catch tray” that might work well on your splitter. Hopefully the in series mufflers aren’t creating too much back pressure. Fabing up a tractor muffler with rain cap would work well too. Honestly I’d invest the money in a new ohv engine…smoother, fuel efficient, quieter, no heat deflector needed. Plus low oil warning. Curious to see what you are planning for control valve? Regen or auto cycle?

Love it. Suggestion. The lock on the trailer hitch may come lose due to vibration. Might want to make hole bigger and put the safety chain hook in it when using it.
Looks like you got a great splitter to start with, you’ve got the skills to turn that thing into something just as good or better than a wolf ridge or eastenmade.
you probably have already done the tray... but I personally wouldn't make it a tray and just make it a grate have a couple cross members to support some upside down angle iron in the shape of a triangle to grip falling wood... but then you wouldn't have to worry about cleaning out water or debris kind of like this ^^^^^
Hi Doug, I like the renovation of the old Spliter I have one of those home. I also have a new axis and I like the deflector for your belly that you made. Do you have a design for that that I might purchase?
If you drill the pressure office out just a bit and increase the rpm it will speed it up and no cost, and I know all the experts will say get a bigger pump but try that first that’s no cost, that’s some Australian advise and the reverb is great 👍

@@OneEyeCustoms you could add a T fitting and mount a pressure gauge. Based on the internal diameter of the piston and the travelling speed you could figure out displacement of the pump and deduce from both the power delivered by the pump. Can be valuable info for designing speed improvements
DOUG, Like the series! Got a question, how would you increase the ram speed to cycle faster? I'm sure raising the RPM's on the engine wont help much. Cause the splitter I have is also slow.
Not much can be done without throwing lots of money at it. That’s one thing I don’t want to do. You can reduce the total stroke to help time per cycle.

Don’t remove the cover it needs to flow over the entire surface. I have the same issue and I’m going to try to deflect the air on the outlet side.

After watching the 4th then 1st, 2nd and 3rd it's been an interesting journey to see the changes especially after seeing what you end up with.

The splitter looks great. When I have hoses made they clean the inside of the hose after cutting it to length. There are metal filings in there.

Weld on a hook on the top of the ram . To get rounds unstuck with a chain wrap around the wood.

get some Bungees to wrap around the wood so you can make multiple cuts without the round falling apart

You need to figure out a graphic... At the end of the video, have a final picture. And then a graphic of a rubber stamp that says, "Dougified".
