Will look forward to seeing the repairs made and the upgrades you do. Hopefully you will show the upgrades as you do them :-)) It's more enjoyable, at least for me, to see the work of the upgrades being done.
Doug, awesome but take the cover plate under the spark plug off and there should be an id plate on it. Can't wait to see the Doug affect ! I could see it being raised up
We used to have a splitter like that. Cut a special chunk of fire wood for the front and backed the wheels up on car ramps until we redid the whole splitter .
Can't wait to see the end result . My dad built a splitter 45 years ago. Motor blew up, hydraulic tank leaked, he gave it to me. Friend gave me an engine, got a hydraulic tank off a 1960s combine. I figure I have 130$ into it. Splits wood like it should. Way better than store bought.
Really looking forward to this one Doug, the whole way through i was hoping for at least a fresh coat of paint and a one eye customs sticker. The main downside i see is any log you split is essentially sitting in grease on the beam before being split. Some way of turning the hydraulics vertically would be awesome. Please also fix the wheel bearing, it would annoy me knowing it was faulty😅 i would also have a rain cover like you put on Adams, think of his mods which made it more user friendly
Awesome project! I love to refurbish old equipment. In my experience, older equipment is usually made better than what you can today. Looking forward to part 2!
I can see it coming One Eyed Customs log splitters 😝 been watching since you started making videos always informative and entertaining to watch keep up the outstanding work my friend cheers 👌🏻🔥🇨🇦
Love projects like this, Doug! Taking old relics (particularly ones that have been in the family forever) and totally refurbishing them. The splitter is perfect for your needs. I am not offering any advice because, to this point, you did everything exactly the way I would have done them. You don't need a smartass giving their 2 cents. I'm hoping you make that thing look like new when you're done with fresh paint all around and everything. That's what you usually do. Looking forward to Part 2!
Nice project Doug. Couple suggestions.. 1) unbolt engine, open garage door, toss engine into woods. Replace with a clone engine. 2) if you’re not going to up size engine or pump, replace splitter valve with a regenerative valve. Or auto cycle valve. As slow as that is an auto cycle would let you take bathroom breaks. I’d say up size engine, pump and auto cycle valve and be done with it. 3) probably already planning this but if not raise it up. 4) build catch pan.
Looking forward to seeing the modifications you do to this splitter. Another idea might be how about a 4 or 6 way head that could slide over the splitter so you can split a log once and get multiple pieces. Thanks for sharing.
Years ago, I built a splitter that had a table attached to the ram that went out past the knife! Really worked well when doing big rounds as nothing fell on the ground & the pieces came back on the return stroke!
Time to hits the parts catalogs for a higher flow hydraulic pump and bigger engine. You've got some work ahead of you to get the cycle time closer to that of the Axis.
Nice job Doug! I’d love to build or rebuild a splitter… I’m just kind of a train wreck with small engines. 😂🤷♂️. Love seeing you and Adam working videos together!
After you get done with modifications on this one, I would build a new one from scratch. Would be a great series showcasing a lot of your talents. Very ambitious project, but give it some thought.
Those little engines have been around for a long time. Maybe a touch better than B&S brand. A table off the sides of the wedge to catch split pieces. So you don't have to pick up off the ground. A staging table opposite operator You can load smaller rounds by hand. Use Your skid steer for a log lift like John Clark does @ Fricknjeep.
In the next video, can you talk about what, if anything, could be done to improve the splitter ram speed? I’m interested to hear what you would say about that.
I've seen videos of people putty box blades on to make squares. Also, a 4 way splitter blade to drop on. Even have seen one where as the cylinder retracts, a table comes up to lift splits back up to the splitting area.
I would ditch the motor, flip it upside down. And modify it to be used on the skidsteer for slitting big rounds 🙂👍. But if it has memories from the past attached to it. Then maybe not 🙂.
My uncle gave me a 2 inch water pump with briggs 5 horsepower on it and for the life of me I cannot get spark out of it ! My son and I have tried everything but I am to the point now that I am just going to get a hobo freight predator engine we have one on a log splitter and it runs awesome with probably 50 cords of wood through it over 5 year . The funny part is I don't need a 2 inch pump I am just determined to make that thing pump water lol
Converting this to a Vertical Splitter would be the best thing you could do with this, other than re-powering this with anything other than a TECUMSEH!
My grandfather had a splitter that he started, but died before it was finished. My dad got it in the estate sale. 20 or so years ago I finished it, and I don't regret setting it to a good working height. There are things I would do differently now that I did back then simply because I had very little to spend on it. A couple of years ago I added a lift to the side of it. I was always planning on it, but never really needed it until a couple of years ago. As we often say "I should have done that years ago". I don't see any reason why you couldn't add a lift to yours as well. Let me know if you'd like help with a design!
Cool! I love rebuild videos. Did you change the oil in the engine? Also, what's the latest with the house attic project you were working on? I think it was your sons house maybe?
Hi Doug, I am not sure if you were able to identify the engine? I assume all the engine tags are missing? If they were there your Tecumseh contact should be able to help you figure out the HP. I would think there should be a s/n stamped into the block. If that can’t be found maybe they can tell you the HP by the carburetor part number you purchased. I send to be in parts for Cummins/Onan engines, gensets etc. Just my 2¢ worth. See you in the next installment.
I'm sure you'll have it purring in no time. If you like projects such as this, you might also enjoy watching the "Mustie1" channel. He lives in New Hampshire and uploads a new video every Sunday. Highly recommended.
Splitter mods, repairs, and builds seem to be in the air around our region. Save some time on the 24th for my event if you're so inclined. Also, I just replaced the Tecumseh (snowblower version with no air filter) on my push-through splitter that I bought off a guy whonwas towing it to Andover at a gas station, with a Predator 212. I'm not a fan of the country of origin, but the $99.00 sale price caused me to sin. That splitter had/has a ton of issues, but the push-through design w/table has been worth the frustration. I'm looking forward to your mods. I might have a request on a "One Eye Custom" mod for one of my projects if you're game.
There's a mod I keep meaning to make to my 25T rail splitter that I've seen others do. It'll split anything up to 26" long, but everything I split is 16". The mod basically causes the ram to stop at a selected point on the return stroke by kicking the control lever to neutral so you you're not wasting time by having the ram return to the full retracted position. Set it for 18" so you can still drop a log in without any trouble, but not have that extra 16" of travel time. This makes the cycle time about 30% shorter.
@@OneEyeCustoms I have a couple pics, but you don't have an email address visible on YT. I sent them to Adam, he can forward them to you. There's two variants, from two different people. I imagine you can improve on them :)
Those are not the best engines. My BiL used to work for that company and always said not to buy anything with those on it. I’m glad you got it running and can’t wait to see how you “Doug-a-fy” it.
@@OneEyeCustoms I have been looking at the 940 or the 835 knee mill. I never thought to look at how to do the tool change.. I just assumed they had a spindle lock. Thank you for answering!
Perhaps you might want to tell Motor Trends magazine to change their name... I quote (from a forgotten online source): American Heritage College Dictionary defines engine as: “A machine that converts energy into mechanical force or motion.” It defines motor as: “Something, such as an engine, that produces or imparts motion” or “A device that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy, as an internal-combustion engine. The dictionary specifically mentions the internal combustion engine as a type of motor, so that should settle that whole discussion. And if it doesn’t, consider the fact that the term for “engine” in other languages is actually “motor.” For example, if you translate the term “diesel engine” into German, you’ll notice that their word for it is “Dieselmotor.” Plus, if you look at any old advertising for American car companies at the turn of the 20th century, you’ll likely see the term “motor” used more often than “engine.” (Not to mention, we call a bicycle with an internal combustion engine a *motor*cycle). So yes, a fossil-fuel powered engine is a motor. And it’s totally OK to call it one.
Oh boy… Doug’s going to turn this splitter into something better than anything on the market today
He gonna “Dougify” it🤣😂
As Adam says Doug you’re going to have the splitter dougifide in no time at all ❤😊😮
Will look forward to seeing the repairs made and the upgrades you do.
Hopefully you will show the upgrades as you do them :-))

Thank you!!
Look forward to your splitter project.
Looking forward to part 2.
The needle and needle seat are the biggest problems with Tecumseh engines...
So glad to see that the "Ram" has a zerk fitting to keep it lubricated!
As soon as I saw it - I could hear your gears cranking. Changes are-a-comin!

Good job Doug. Now get over to Adam’s and solve his tractor hoisting issue!
Let's see what cool changes you come up with . 😎
By the end of this series that thing is going to roll out of your shop looking like a full on PROcessor

Nice find Doug. My 1st splitter was identical to this one and i know i ran the crap out of it.. Was a good splitter to learn off of..

Nice. I got an old one similar that I need to rebuild. Raising the deck height is a great idea.
Doug, everything you do is cool. Hope the next video is coming tomorrow. 🤠
The old engines were built to last. Stay safe.
When Doug is done, the only thing that will be original to this machine will be the beam! 😅
Hello from Mechanicsville, VA
Looks like a great project Doug. I'm sure it will be amazing when you're all finished.
Doug looks like a 3.5 HP Tecumseh engine. Add a slip over 4way splitter. Replace hydraulic filter.
Thank you!!
I know you will make it better for sure Doug!! Can't wait to see your modifications!! Stay safe!!
What a fun project! And a useful tool lives again! 👍

Awesome splitter I had almost that identical one. Those Tecumseh engines are great! Mine was really loud! Never should have sold it!
Doug. You are a guru.
This is going to be a really cool project and certainly look forward to your progress and expertise!
It's great to see you got it running and everything works well. Minor leaks I'm sure you can fix. The rest is your vision of the final product ❤
Change filters on both oil. Raise it up. Paint it. Bigger tires. For off road.
She looks like a Montgomery Ward that someone added more wedge to, added a filter and bigger tank, and a bigger push plate. Better axle.
Nice video. You teach me that I need to be more meticulous in cleaning. That splitter will out perform any of the junk they sell today.
God bless you Doug for taking on such a daunting project. I am sure you will do a great job as usual. Bill H from Cranberry Township

what I see is a wolfridge splitter with a perfect split system and a log lift and a 4 sec split time
I pull the splitter I use onto car ramps and jack up the front it’s at waist height for me and it works better for me less bending over
I would ditch the motor, flip it upside down. And modify it to be used on the skidsteer for slitting big rounds 🙂👍. But if it has memories from the past attached to it. Then maybe not 🙂.
Something tells me Adam and Easton will be calling you up for your wood splitter once you are done with it.
hi doug you will get it running no problems at all good luck

I want to see your master fabrication skills turn it into the ultimate processor or at least vertical. No pressure though.
Yes, I would love to see you Dougify this splitter as well as an Adamish cost breakdown.
You could turn it into a verticle.

They make replacement kill switches that connect to the bolt closest to spark plug.
You're going to need to add a log lift.
I'd build some drop spindles to raise it up, and you'd have a lot of ground clearance.
Stay tuned

Is the fuel filter upside down?? You’re supposed to catch the junk on the outside of it! Great work getting it back to running! Thanks for sharing
Nope, there is a big arrow on it showing flow direction
Cool! I love rebuild videos. Did you change the oil in the engine? Also, what's the latest with the house attic project you were working on? I think it was your sons house maybe?
Yes, Oil is changed and the house project has stalled with nice weather and mowing season. Lol
Looks like my neighbors.
can't wait to see new mods to it!
You should convert it to one like Adam has because even raising this one to waist height, its going to give you back problems.
If you had no choice, vinegar might get that carb cleaned up for new needles, ports, and gaskets.

After Doug's finished with it, it will have a 1.5 sec cycle rate, 45hp diesel, and 24' conveyor. Woo-hoo!
Well, maybe not all that, but I will have a better functioning splitter than it was.
I’ve been looking for a old log spitter to rebuild and fix up
Can’t even think about buying a new one 😢

Is that a homemade splitter? I have NEVER seen a pull behind splitter that had the wedge on the same end as the hitch coupler???
Yes it is.
Two speed pump!
Agree!!!
A 10hp Predator swap seems like a "better way"..... :D
Can you do a video about your trailers
Why not make a stand to set it up on to get your height. You have the machines to pick it up.
I am wondering, what PM mill do you have and how do you feel about it? I am looking to get one for a room that has 87" clearance to the ceiling.
It is the PM 833 TV.
I would not buy it again for one reason only… no lock on the motor for tool changes. It sucks the way it has to be done.
@@OneEyeCustoms I have been looking at the 940 or the 835 knee mill. I never thought to look at how to do the tool change.. I just assumed they had a spindle lock. Thank you for answering!
Red notta good ground color?
Not sure if you are in the states, but red means STOP here. So I thought it was a great color for stopping the motor.

Great, thank you!

Yea, thanks. I did make a comment about that in the video.
