Far out. It's so simple when you think about it. I, (years ago), used to be involved in pneumatic automation systems, and I should have thought of this. No wasted energy. You are the man, my friend.
Just found your video!! I would say it’s the simplest one I’ve seen that works just fine! Sometimes the more complicated ones and more expensive doesn’t really matter! Still does the same thing- lifts the log to be split! Love your use of material that you already had and repurposed a great lift for your splitter! 👍🏻🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
@@graham.l6604 I've had things for over a decade before figuring out a use for them. LOL I've scrapped or thrown away things and within a week wished I had it for something I was working on.
I made a log lift for my splitter and didn't have the time to do all hydraulic, so , I used a cheap winch , my splitter is heavy and I've used it to pull out bushes as well , there's a short video of my splitter on my channel , good job , they are a huge back saver .cheers .
Man thanks for posting was gonna do a hydraulic lift version but this idea is way cheaper and easier to do. Don’t like the vertical log splitters because you’re bending to split the logs. You’re way bend once then split standing at the table. My back thanks you and thanks again for posting this idea! You rock....
Hey! What a great idea. Thank you.. I am in the process of building a splitter and didn't want to spend the money on the extra ram and other parts usually needed for a lift.. I love it. Thanks again 😊
Excellent, thank you very much for sharing this with us. I will do this to our splitter, as suddenly being over 50 years old makes old man pine rings 10 times heavier...lol...love your videos and can do attitude! Interesting to see you used an old keyed pulley, I would have overthought it, and brought a pulley with bearing, not needed! Thank You.
Glad you found it useful, I have a bad back so could't lift the rounds without this. I am on a tight budget so tend to just use what I have in my junk pile ;)
I feel justified wearing crocs now.. Cuz my youtube star from New Zealand who gets it done, wears them, so I can be cool wearing them too! Brilliant! "The man makes the clothes. "
Dear Marty T. 👍👌👏 Simple and therefore Ingenious = simply fantastic! Made out of reclaimed material and works great. Very well done, Sir. Thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health.
Looks like a good idea. I never liked the splitters where the wedge moved because you have to handle every piece of wood after it's split. The type where the log is pushed through you can just let the next block push the split wood.
Then it would push them off onto the ground and you’d have to pick them up to split them again. Unless all you use is tiny wood that only needs split once.
I just knew that you made that... That's freakin awesome...I was checking it out when you used it in the other video..Really smart idea brother!!! Smarter not harder... we have to think of saving our backs!!!
I like the concept Marty and it looks like it works well, only caveat I see is that you need to have the splitter hooked up to an ATV or tractor to keep it from falling over as the weight of the unsplit rounds would tip it I suspect.
It has a fold down leg to keep it upright, This little chinese diesel creates a lot of vibration, if I had it hooked up to the quad it would shake it to bits ;)
It is a nice welder, but its a nuisance having to travel an hour to fill up the co2 when it runs out at a crucial time, I actually use my inverter arc more these days
I hear you, the wind and bottle are the only drawbacks but around the house I make sure to have an extra bottle when I have a good size project! Good job on your digger and dozer brother plus the grader is awesome!
Been on a binge watch! Thanks for the great videos. What a beautiful spot you live in. I did wonder where on earth you were able to find the ANSI/CSA approved welding crocs? 😄 Looking forward to the next video. Too shelf stuff.
If you changed the shape of the splitting tool - to an "X" or a "Y" perhaps - wouldn't that improve splitting time? Perhaps a choice of splitter shapes depending on the size of the round to be split? Depends on the strength of the ram I suppose but splitting rounds into 4 parts in one go seems like a time saver to me.
Hi i was curious most log splitters ive seen can pivot to be used in horizontal or vertical mode. Vertical mode is a lot easier no lifting required. You have great ingenuity its fun to see what youll come up with next.
If you put on another pulley below the one you have already and replace the chain with cable, do you think you could clear the cable/chain under the log round platform so that you would not have to unhook the chain to roll the log round to the splitter head? You made a great mod, thanks.
@@MartyT I didn't see how you hooked it to the lift but you could use an eye loop and just simply unhook it from there if you wanted to disengage it, just a thought.
Excellent rig to save time and strain. Then I wonder why you split and toss on the ground. Where are your meter square pallet storage boxes? Is this done before you made them ?
I'm pretty impressed, and I'm not easily impressed. It looks like you made it all out of salvage and didn't have any expense other than time and consumables. Only thing I might have done differently is I would have probably built the lift part and then welded it to the splitter. I thought your wire welder sounded like you were using mig wire without gas,(sounded pretty bad) then I noticed that you went stick.
I hope by now You welded a bolt on the foot of the splitter so you do not have to drop the cable or chain to the ground every round you split, save you bending to get it, other wise a very well thought out and executed idea. well done.
@@MartyT I had the same thought but after watching other setups it doesn't seem to be a problem if it moves each time. It's not in the way of anything and doesn't slow the process.
Is your cordless drill running off a 12v battery? Nice job BTW. I'm watching this because I need to build something similar for my father's wood splitter, and it too is tall.
Yes I have heard that, I think its better to avoid the fumes altogether, I grind as much off as I can and hold my breath when welding to avoid inhaling any fumes
This is absolutely the most brilliant idea I’ve ever seen. Absolutely will give this a try!
Brilliantly simple, and simply brilliant.
4:31 - I love that the custom deck on his quad matches the custom deck on the splitter he's towing!
Marty T you are a genius! Such a simple effective improvement - I have a similar log splitter and this would help so much! Thanks for sharing.
Its a real back saver, you won't regret it
@@MartyT This is why I bought a log splitter that can split vertically too. Just roll the big pieces to it and chop it up.

I’ve looked at several non hydraulic lift tables and IMO your design wins the prize. Simple and very practical!
It seemed like the easiest/lightest way to do the job
Yes, and no new hydraulics.
Very Ingenious using the ram to pull the log up with.

Now that's what ya call using your head and not your back!
awesome great job
If you put another pulley wheel below the top one & run the lift chain parallel and along side the frame rail you wouldn't need to un-hitch it.
Yes I could but I don't want it to move on every stroke, it would wear things out faster, slow down the engine and use more fuel
you ought to put a hitch on it to pull trailer for your wood
Go Marty !
Some cool Kiwi ingenuity right there mate.
Who else turns a cordless drill into a corded drill that runs off a car battery ??
Genius !
I was thinking ''why would you need to make something? just attach a chain to the ram'' Then I discovered horizontal log splitters exist.
Horizontal splitters are ok if you like working on your hands and knees
@@MartyT I have only ever used vertical splitters that you put 1 meter (3.4 feet) logs on

thanks for the good design , just wondering did you just use self tapping screws into the hydraulic oil tank or drain then weld that bit of angle iron
Looks like the angle iron is on the fender brace that is welded to the tank so no actual oil is under that particular part

How has this held up Marty?
Very well, mechanical side is still running strong. Only problem is one of the tyres fell apart, cheap chinese plastic tyres don't last long
Very clever idea. Especially for a Kiwi. ;-)
Was the drill running off a car battery, or was it me? Certainly never saw that before. Good stuff.
👍👌
Disconnecting the chain each time seems annoying. If you used cable and another pulley you could keep the cable below the beam out of your way.
Yes that would work but I don't really want it raising the lift arm every time I make a split
