Lyrics "cleaned up" for television, but still one of the greatest Christmas songs ever. Shane has obviously had a few but Shane is Shane. Kirsty's powerful voice takes this song to the next level. Other women have done covers but none come close to Kirsty. Now that they're both no longer with us makes the song even more poignant. RIP Shane and Kirsty.

One of the most realistic that's what makes it good. The holidays trying to force people disgusted with each other to make nice. Highest rates of suicide are that time of year not just the lack of daylight but those unrealistic expectations are really depressing.

I don't think anyone could imagine Shane out living Kristy. Shane has battled his addiction to drink his whole life and Kristy died protecting her son on vacation. 21 years next week.... amazing person, women and a hero ...
Ignoring a lot of the details the absolute travesty that was the follow-up failure of the Mexican "justice," system to hold the multimillionaire who killed her accountable... her family did a HELL of a lot in the aftermath to not only seek justice, but to work to fix a lot of the issues that contributed to her untimely death. Including raising a substantial amount of money for a number of charities, both based in and working in Mexico (among others), believing (i think correctly) that its what Kristy would have done/wanted. Her legacy is one of heroism, and its a shame it had to be that way.

Kirsty Maccoll wasn't comfortable performing live really. She wasn't a fan of miming though really . However most of her performances on tv were . Not this though clearly. She has a backing track though on certain notes which he doesn't.

I'm sure a lot of people are not aware that Kirsty Maccall was the daughter of singer/song writer Ewen Maccall. He was born in Glasgow but raised in Salford, which is now part of Greater Manchester. His most famous song is Dirty Old Town which he wrote about Salford, although many people think its an Irish song
I nominate "The first time I ever saw your face" as Ewan MacColls best known song. If you want some trivia - Roy Hodgson, ex-England football manager, was a PE teacher at Kirsty MacColl's school.
Dirty Ol` Town was written for a musical...another Ewans songs "The Shoals Of Herring" was written for a BBC documentary , plenty of people here in the UK are aware of Kirstys background by the way .

It's something that could only have come out of post punk London, really. (Of course nowadays Ireland are trying to reclaim him as if they loved him all along!! ;)
@@neilsun2521 Born in Kent to Irish parents, moved to Tipperary shortly afterwards, returned to UK when 6. 2nd gen Irish, born in 57, came through that time of the troubles and what that meant for the children of Irish parents in the UK in that period. He has that rough edge you'll find in many of the same, a street awareness and can take the punches. More recently said music (aka the Pogues) was his alternative to "laying down his life for Ireland". He has that distinct London Irish vibe about him.
