Lyrics
Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.
I love my love and well she knows,
I love the ground, whereon she goes,
I wish the day, it soon would come,
When she & I could be as one.
Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.
I go to the Clyde and I mourn and weep,
For satisfied, I ne'er can be,
I write her a letter, just a few short lines,
And suffer death, a thousand times.
Black is the colour of my true love's hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair,
She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands,
I love the ground, Whereon she stands.

I grew up listening&learning &Was blessed to walk my Sister down the aisle as Legend’s song played
Am Russian, I spend 12 years of 45 years in lucan village, love u Irish people are the best.
This song is the soundtrack of my heartbreak of losing my dad and losing my most significant romantic relationship 💔
Rip god bless your father
Awesome!
More of Moore
When the crowd really kicks in, I get covered in goosebumps every single time. Christy's timing of each word and syllable is just extraordinary. The real tragedy is that I didn't discover him until I was 50.
It's not even an irish song. It has an unknown righter
@@contony81 Likely Scottish, unless someone was visiting the Clyde from another country.
''When the crowd really kicks in, I get covered in goosebumps every single time.''
I think Christy Moore mention that in an interview. When the crowd join him in that way, there's nothing better.
It is never too late to doscover this song.
Likewise but 45 years old! Buut I am so glad that I did!!
I've always believed that there hasn't yet been released a musical production that didn't have at least one redeeming feature or indeed great song!
It's a shame though as you tend to end up with "secret weapon" artists or genres; but also why I try an entire album before dismissing the musicians!
Chrisy is for sure, one of these - and I feel like it's almost a point of pride that so few know about him, so they can feel better than the normals, or something!
Hats off to Hamish Imlach for teaching this song to Christy.
Declan Sinnott - such an incredibly subtle touch.
When others sing they sing from the heart, Christy sings from the soul
He sings from his mouth 😅
Moore's talent is unquestionable. I love his style. But he has made it his life-quest to be a professional whinger. Constantly denying that the Catholic Faith is intrinsic to the Ireland he loves; the Church did this, the Church did that, blah blah blah, all because he doesn't want to get off his arse and change his own personal life ...And also, why doesn't he go and live in one of the many Marxist utopias that he celebrates?
When mammies burp, they burp from the belly
But Christy burps from his dirty bottom
@@Dave-im3lm He sings from HEART and SOUL and the words comes out
@@cahillgregIt’s been a year. Have you grown up yet?
yesterday while sitting by our lake here in Hanover I was listening to some guys playing it on an Irish beer fest…
This moment when you cannon believe that you have never heard one of your favourite songs ever before in your life…
I remember you singing this in The Fairways Hotel Dundalk many years ago, the 1st time I was able to get to one of your shows. I was in tears, still cry when I hear you sing this or 'Ride on '.. #specialmemories You are an amazing artist & ambassador for Ireland Christy, thank you for sharing your special gift with the world #andireviews
I remember the Fairways in Dundalk for another reason , it was there my late wife Rosie an I were interviewed to start our journey to Australia 53 years Rosie has passed away but I am still here . Listening to Christy .
the closest I got to experiencing this song and Christy Moore was in an Irish pub where people started singing and we all joined in and ended up sobbing, cus it was such an emotional coming together of all of us, strangers in effect. Art unites, I think.
Hi from Offaly ☘️
@@gerrymcardle9319I’m a bit late , am Irish and live in Boston USA. God continue to bless yourself and Rosie. She’s just above the sky and looking forward to seeing you again. I’m not clairvoyant I just know it.👍
Goes into slot 1 of my "Songs to make grown men sniffle and sob" compilation every time. So sweet and true.
Best singing audience, I have ever heard. Glasweegens, ah? and Christy ist a class of its own, anyway.
Christ of Almighty what a love song!!! Beautifully performed of course by Mr Moore. ❤❤❤❤❤

There aren't many artists who can make a live performance sound this good.
@Black Lesbian Poet go back to bed you
You’re right I’m not sure there are any 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hahaha gwan tha jizzio boyo
Hamish imlasch rip legend
@@thomascassidy8715 yeah love cod liver oil & orange juice as well that he sings
This gentleman has provoked a hunger in my soul for Irish history! I am a first generation American my parents are both Irish immigrants who spoke little of the oppression and racism they experienced growing up in the 40's and fifties i have been down a rabbit hole for a while exploring the the meanings behind the names and locations mentioned in Christy songs and the wolfe Tones theres some serious BUll*h*T that the Irish have endured historically Keep on Keepin on Christy The Wolfe Tones don't let us forget about Bob Sands or the Quitana Brigada your work is working! Im here and i hear !! Ourselves Alone!!!!
It's a Scottish ballad about the hardship of life
Irish man here.. u haven't any idea. Our history would make the black lives matter realise blacks an Irish are extremely simular.
1st generation 2nd, 3rd, 10th! It doesn’t matter. If your people identify as Irish and you feel Irish you’re Irish. The 40 shades of green will always be there to welcome you home. 🇮🇪 ☘️
There be no Guinness at his gigs anymore.
@@paulobrien3102 as Phil Lynott had on his t-shirt.
I love the ground where Christy Moore stands.
Christy is amazing but all the better for the unassuming genius that is Mr. Sinnott
true! x
How wonderful and perfect timing. You're a bloody. Legend, Mate
This song reminds me of history of oppression and most of all forgiveness in order to keep history from a repeat if that's not ❤ I don't know 🎉
❤
An expat here in Cork, five years, a band covered this song at a local pub. I'm quite stoic but this made me shed a tear. I love you Ireland and her people. This Island is truly touched by the Almighty, praise be only to him. Appreciate the true experience of Love, for the Lord of the world's has blessed us with its sweetness and bitterness.
Back in the myst of time I spent 2 years with a black haired Irish gypsy beauty. This song makes me think of her. Golden memories.
I normally don’t like crowds singing along at gigs, but this is beautiful here hearing the audience so moved. ❤❤❤
I like it, but almost always makes me cry. :)
This was the first song I sang at the Maidenhead Folk Club way back in the day. It has been a stalwart of my repertoire ever since.
One of the best songs/lyrics about LOVE I have ever heart so far. Thank you Christy.....
I heard this song for the first time few days ago here in Dublin in the International Pub by some musicians there. I did instantly deeply fell in love. Totally. In the middle of a pub I did stand still and I could feel tears coming. It was moving, deep, like a music I heard before long time ago somewhere. Oh the power of music. It did move a whole universe inside me in 2 minutes.
the same! :) x
😅es ist fast 40 Jahre her, dass ich Christie live in Galway in einen Pub gehört habe. Bevor das Konzert begann, gab es einen ziemlich betrunkenen Mann, der leider anfing zu stören, sodass er den Pub verlassen musste. Christie sagte: Give him his money back....Das habe ich nie vergessen.
Großartiger Mensch und Künstler 👏👍👍
God bless Christy Moore.🌹I am forever thankful.
I've just discovered this... so beautiful, so magical...
I walked the Clyde not long ago singing this in my head, love the audience singing along too. Love it
The audience were amazing hey? :)
Declan works some real magic on this one. ty
what a tremendously knowledgeable Glasgow audience, very moving
Christy is the best irish singer
Luke Kelly would like a word
I would listen to him sing a chocolate cookie recipe
I love this song I’m only 22 but I heard it when I was 12 at my mum and step dads wedding fell in love with it
I write her a letter, just a few short lines. Is it wrong to be heartbroken.
Music is a wonderful vehicle for growth, life is pretty damned complicated. Be well little sister. I’m sixty, ok daughter or niece or whatever, I’m old and you are not. Just be well.
The problem for me was that my true love didn’t have black hair, she gave me three children and I worship the ground where on she goes, she has the sweetest smile and the gentlest hands, she is everything good that I could never be.
This is the first Christy song i ever heard , within no time i was hooked , shouted the Wife in to listen then we bot decide we MUST see him live, a few months later we seen him in Barrowlands Glasgow , words can not explain how unbelieveable that night was
JFC ALWAYS takes my breath away this performance of this beautiful song. Thx Christy. You’re a feckin great big Irish ☘️ ⭐️ ❤❤❤
And thx Declan too! ❤
Fantastic Christy!. I came over to Dublin last month to see you in the NCH, and what a fantastic night that was. You were on fire. Hope to see you back in Wales soon, but if not, I don't mind travellin 😊 God bless you Christy.

I love this song, ride on, Christy
Greatness from Bulgaria. God bless u Mr Moore
Christy sounds as good singing live as he does in the recording studio.
I prefer raw, untamed talent... old school stuff, that's my ground. :)
DEAR CHRISTY,I saw you the first time in the Olympia years ago and
again in Galway never in Vicar St.Please God we may meet again in Kildare before too late,I am stuck in Italy Miss Erin sooooooo✌️💚☘️
Go raibh maith agat!!!!☘️
Beautiful. So touching - I love every note and word.
I always hated the way an artist like Christy had to intersperse pieces like this with some “oul larky” crap to reassure the hyper-critical Irish fans that he wasn’t “losing the run of hisself”
A legitimate poet laureate of the Nation (a Nation whose soveregnty we could not wait to cede to a faceless and unaccountable “europe”)
It is terribly upsetting to watch Ireland sleepwalk to its destruction. Giving sovereignty away after so many brave men and women died in the fight to regain it is unforgivable...
Ride on Christy, ride on!
I left the youtube generated for you mix that this was on playing when I left the house, returned to it having 'paused - continue watching' at the very beginning of this song, and oh brother Above did I need it right now!

Great tune 🇮🇪
Me old lad brought me to the Clyde when I went to see him over this song classic 👌
Its rare when a musician is better live than on an album. Real talent 💪
the audience makes it a song that without them
Was the original video taken down? Didn’t it have millions of views?
It's a Scottish song. Saor Alba. Free Scotland
Would have been a perfect song for the original Highlander.
They definitely don't make them like they used 2 loveeee Christy Moore
