Probably the most ubiquitous and well-liked Christmas song in the UK and Ireland. I can listen to it a thousand times and not get bored of it, it just embodies Christmas for me and many others. It reminds me of my childhood, always hearing it around Christmas time. Any time I hear it, even now, it makes me think of driving around with my family and looking at all the lights and hearing it come on the radio. A simpler time. A happier time. R.I.P. to both Shane and Kirsty, both tragically taken too young.
I am from italy and believe me...this is my generation's xmas song. I was born in the 80's you see, so... cranberries, pogues, sinead... so thanks you irish peoples, thanks u a lot. Thank you for bringin us so wonderful music. And of course... forgive my terribile english.
@@tizioincognito5731 Well done. sir! 🎩 I am Irish born in London. Just found out that I am 10% Italian! 😂 I know it’s only 10% but it makes sense 😂 you guys have style and substance 😂❤
We had a wave of Irish music in Sweden when The Pogues first started a weird mix of punks and old folksong leftists who went to concerts. I can't hear this one without going back to that time. Not pubs, but trashed out living rooms. Toy Dolls, Ramones, random Swedish stuff and then suddenly this one causing a mix of melancholy, joy, screaming the lyrics and giving hugs.
The Pogues are an awesome band with their Irish roots, superb lyrics, and great instrumentals. Fairytale of New York is the most played Christmas song in the UK.
Adding another vote to react to Kirsty MacColl, one of the finest singer songwriters of her time. She's been gone 23 years now, and was on the verge of breaking through after years of ups and downs as a singer. She was so well known and utilized in the British music industry, be it her songs or her vocals backing other artists. She hadn't become well known in America, yet was about to tour a brilliant new album that I think would have really caught on here. Then she was gone, by the tragic negligence of another party. She wrote some of the most clever, sometimes funny yet extremely poignant lyrics you will ever here. Definitely worth giving her work a try.
A song that almost didn’t happen, the record company wanted to release it in time for Christmas which meant it had to be finished by a certain date, but Shane and the band had listened to a dozen or more female session singers, and had rejected them all. With very little time left they were on the brink of abandoning the whole thing when the producer persuaded them to hold off over the weekend. The producer was Kirsty’s then boyfriend and he recorded her in their garage studio. Played it to Shane on the following Monday, and the rest is history. Kirsty was a painfully insecure artist in her own right, but you really should check out her solo stuff, in particular her biggest hit, There’s A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He’s Elvis, which sounds like it should be a novelty record, but actually has very meaningful lyrics which I’m sure Amber would appreciate.
And of course theres her hit 'In these shoes?' She had such a sense of humour, you can find it in many of her songs, but the one that always makes me laugh is 'Here comes that man again.'
They're not checking out anything else from kirsty or Shane and it's pretty clear why. Shane just passed and all of a sudden lots are reacting to his biggest song...
We sadly lost Shane just before Christmas last year and Kirsty McColl in 2000. Its an amazing song that gets played every Christmas here in the UK. You'll love 'Irish Rover' by these guys
I'm blown away you guys are reacting to this!! This song has always had a special place in my heart around the holidays! Very sad news of MacGowan's recent passing. May he RIP. I was also a fan of Kirsty MacColl who passed away many years before. "Walking Down Madison" is a really groovy tune of hers that I still enjoy to this day.
RIP Shane and, of course, Kirsty (gone way too soon and whose family has still not seen proper justice). For anyone who hasn't yet check out Shane's service, it has some really quality renditions of some classics including, naturally, this one. It's lovely. Thanks for the reaction guys!
It has actually never been no.1 in the UK, reaching No. 2 a couple of times, but it does make the top 10 every Christmas, and it would be nice if it got the top spot one day. It was also voted Britain's favourite Christmas song about 16 years ago.
I grew up in an Irish-Dominican neighborhood so this song has been in my rotation for years upon years. This is the first time, though, that is really made me cry as both leads are now gone. I was lucky enough to see the Pogues in 1986 when I was just 15 years old. Saw them again in '91 at an Irish music festival called Feile, and were joined onstage by Kirsty McColl and they performed this song. Absolutely unforgettable experience. The ultimate Christmas song. Rest in power Shane and Kirsty.
The melancholy the Pogues lay down brings me to tears at the most unexpected times. A beautiful song every time I listen no matter the mindset each time.

Thank you so much for finally playing my favourite Christmas tune. Sadly now both vocalists, Shane & Kirsty are no longer with us and ironically lost around the Christmas period. This song still brings a tear to my eye.
Great Christmas song, great reaction!!! You really should check out the version of this played in the church at Shane McGowan's funeral service, it is amazing and you'll love it I'm sure (they even kept in all the non pc lyrics). A great tribute to a legendary singer. More Pogues please!!!
Yes, a brilliant tribute at the funeral. When you see couples dancing at the end, reminiscent of Shane and Kirsty in the original video, if that doesn't bring tears to the eyes then one has no soul.
Kirsty MacColl is a great artist in her own right and unfortunately we lost at an early age and her father was Ewan MacColl who is a folk legend who wrote the song first time ever I saw your face
This is the only Christmas song I can stomach. Growing up in Scotland, I heard this song a lot when I was younger, and continued to listen to it and add it to playlists into my adult life. RIP Shane and Kirsty. You both left behind a song that will take some beating. Thanks for the reaction guys.

Both Pogues and Kristy MacColl absolutely deserve reactions. For Pogues I would suggest: 1. Wild Rover 2. Dirty Old Town And for Kristy: 1. England 2 Colombia 0 2. In These Shoes? 3. There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop, Swears He's Elvis
My birthday is Xmas eve born London 1990. This song brings back so many happy memories for me. This is played on every radio station in the UK in December
Glad you’ve found the Pogues. For St. Patrick’s Day, check out “Thousands Are Sailing.” Any time, listen to “Body of an American,” “If I Should Fall From Grace With God,” “Broad, Majestic Shannon,” or their covers of “Dirty Old Town” or “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda.” As for Kirsty MacColl, what could be a better Female Friday song than “In These Shoes”?
"THOUSANDS ARE SAILING" by the Pogues is every bit this great song's equal. A story of the immigrants that come to America... and,, like "FAIRY TALE OF NEW YORK," it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. A truly BEAUTIFUL song.
Kirsty McColl died too young , her dad was folk singer Ewan McColl he wrote The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face which was a big hit for Roberta Flack [ featured in Clint Eastwoods film Play Misty For Me] and Dirty Old Town , Shane and Kirsty will be remembered as Fairy Tale gets lots of radio plays at Xmas here in U.K. .
One of my favorite lines: "I could have been someone, well so could anyone..." It captures the whole despair and disgust they both feel. Shane's trying to blame her and their relationship out of spite and hatred and Kristy's response is basically, "Yeah, anyone could be something, you just don't have what it takes, quit blaming me you loser." The juxtaposition of how it started and where it ended all in 3+ minutes. Perfection.
I expected you to do it on xmas or shortly before when Shane died. You should do their version of Dirty Old Town and especially Rainy Night in Soho! They were highly influencial in the 80s to bring Irish Folk (actually Punk Folk) to a new (mine :)) generation - together with the Waterboys in the second phase (you only did a song from their first phase, please to Bang on the Ear or Fisherman's Blues, you would love it).
"...you took my dreams from me, when I first found you.." "I kept them with me babe, I kept them with my own! Can't make it out alone, I've built my dream around you...." Hits me in the feels every time!! Hard!
I saw the pogues a few times and they were always good. So many you could check out , streams of whiskey, Sally Maclennane, if I should fall from grace with god etc etc
Hi Jay and Amber, Believe it or not this song is actually my ringtone on my phone 😄😄 Shane McGowan was the lead singer with The Pogues He very sadly passed away last month sged 65 🙏🙏 The female singer is Kirsty McColl, who has also sadly passed away 🙏🙏 RIP Shane McGowan 🙏🙏 RIP Kirsty McColl 🙏🙏
They were called the Pogues because they couldn't call themselves póg mo thóin, which is Irish gaelic for "kiss my arse". They played this at Shane's funeral just last month, definitely worth a watch - there was actual dancing in the aisles. RIP Shane, and RIP Kirsty, two absolute stars.
One of my favourite Christmas songs 🎄💕The instruments you wanted to know about are the accordion and the tin whistle. They are very typically of the instruments you’ll hear being played here in Ireland especially in the pubs ☘️🪗🎼
Please do more Kirsty MacColl! She was such a talented singer/songwriter, cruelly killed just over 20 years ago now. In These Shoes, A New England, Walking Down Maddison, Don’t Come The Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim & her cover of The Kinks song, Days to get you started. She was the daughter of Ewan MacColl, a folk singer famous for his song The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
The beginning of the song is just so depressing but then it lights up when Kirsty comes in. Every Christmas is groundhog day because this song is everywhere, on every radio station, every day, every year. RIP to both of them.
If you're looking for a contrast in voices, Shane and Sinead O'Conner did a duet called Haunted. Her voice was angelic against his sandpaper vocals and it couldn't have been more perfect.
I just mentioned Haunted in a comment before seeing yours. I didn’t realize it was a remake. I will definitely check out the original. I first heard it in The Matchmaker which is one of my favorite movies. So much good music in it.
@@nycdawn5061 The original was recorded with the Pogues bass player of the time, Cait O’Riordan on vocals. It was not a duet like the re-recorded version. It was a more jangly, indie style version. They recorded it for the soundtrack of “Sid and Nancy”.
Delighted ye did this song. Rainy Night in Soho, pair of brown eyes and PLEASE have a go at Thousands Are Sailing. Crackin tunes. Unbelievable lyrics. Amazing band.
Shane sadly died at the end of November last year, and Kirsty got tragically killed in an accident back in 2000. This is beautiful melodic song, a Christmas favourite, Shane McGowan had a huge funeral here in Ireland with a huge collection of brilliant musicians, it was a truly moving service with beautiful music. Shane was of course known for his hard living and legendary drinking, but he was a brilliant musician and writer. You should checkout more of his stuff, Rainy Night In Soho, The Old Main Drag, Sally MacLennane and many more. Their 1985 album Rum, Sodomy And The Lash is epic. Nice reaction guys.
Great reaction guys. 👍 Another superb Irish band are The Dubliners, you should see their duet with The Pogues (live on an Irish chat show). This performance is now legendary. It’s called “The Irish Rover”, and it’s a real must-see. Thanks 🙏🏻 From Belfast, Northern Ireland.
YAY!!! FINALLY!!! So glad y'all picked this! HUGE Pogues fan here. I hit the "LIKE" button as soon as I saw the title. This is my ultimate Xmas song (& one of the ultimate love songs, imho). I would also suggest y'all check out their songs "If I Should Fall from Grace With God", "A Rainy Night in Soho", "Streams of Whiskey" , "Love You Till The End" & their versions of "The Parting Glass" & "The Irish Rover". RIP Shane & Kirsty.
Side Note: Spider Stacy, one of the Pogues has a home in New Orleans & often performs there with the Cajun band Lost Bayou Ramblers doing a show called "Poguetry in Motion".
This band was originally called Pogue Mahon (kiss my arse in gaelic). I’m learning this on piano. Absolute masterpiece. Very sad song how she ended up on junk and him an alcoholic. Must have been like that for a lot of people. RIP Shane McGowan and Kirsty McColl
best reaction to this song will always been my mums. it came on the tele and she'd never heard it. when shane mcgowan starts singing she was "oh i don't like this" and i said just give it a moment, it might grow on you and as soon as the music changed and kirsty maccoll started singing she was loving it.
This is my favorite Christmas song. My second favorite is "Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis" by Tom Waits. Kirsty MacColl wasn't actually a member of The Pogues. She's performing a guest duet with MacGowan on this song. For more from the Pogues, you might like "Summer In Siam", "Lorca's Novena", or "The Body Of An American". For more from Kirsty MacColl, try "They Don't Know" and her covers of "Days" (from The Kinks) and "A New England" (from Billy Bragg.)
This is one of my Christmas tradition trifecta songs. The Pogues Fairytale of New York, The Kinks Father Christmas, The Dropkick Murphy’s The Seasons Upon Us. It isn’t Christmas until I hear these 3 songs. My favorite Pogues songs other than this one are The Band Played Waltzing Matilda and Lullaby of London.
So glad you've found this one. There are some wonderful Kirsty Maccoll songs to listen to - A New England, Don't Come The Cowboy With Me, and her gorgeous Kinks cover, Days among many others.
Shane and Sinead O'Conner dying in 2023 and Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries died on January 15th 2018. It has been hard for fans of Irish musicians the last few years to lose legends like Shane MacGowan of The Pogues.
It's nice to see you guys reacting to this classic Irish folk ballad, speaking as one of the descendants of Éire.🍀 It would be great if you guys could react to some Irish movies too.🎬 You just might be pleasantly surprised. There are some great Irish (or Irish related) movies, some of which have become classics. For instance: The Boondock Saints, Michael Collins, The Wind That Shakes The Barley and *Intermission (*the Irish Pulp Fiction). In the opening scene in this video, you can see actor Matt Dillon (also of Irish descent) playing the cop who drags lead singer Shane MacGowan to the "drunk tank". Don't forget to react to some more Irish artists: Dexy's Midnight Runners, Gilbert O'Sullivan, U2, Van Morrison, etc.. Keep representing us Celts.🍀😉 Thanks for sharing.👍 Peace & Love🕊❤

A fantastic song, and the way they sing it,gives me goosebumps...have lived in UK for 23 years now,but when I lived in my native Sweden, this was always one of the most played tunes, around Christmas. Hats off,Kirsty and Shane🇸🇪🇬🇧
Fun fact - The Pogues got their name from an Irish phrase Póg mo hón. Pronounced Pogue Muh hone which means Kiss My A**. True story 😝
what is the actual meaning in English, or pogues is just a name
Pogues - Thousands Are Sailing simply the best. I loved this band in College.
Both Pogues and Kristy MacColl absolutely deserve reactions.
For Pogues I would suggest:
1. Wild Rover
2. Dirty Old Town
And for Kristy:
1. England 2 Colombia 0
Great list...
Irish punk/folk music. Song came out in 1987. Shane was born to irish parents in Britain. Shane loved ireland.
"THOUSANDS ARE SAILING" by the Pogues is every bit this great song's equal. A story of the immigrants that come to America... and,, like "FAIRY TALE OF NEW YORK," it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. A truly BEAUTIFUL song.
OMG I never thought you would react to this. It's simply the greatest Christmas song of all time.
Perfection.
Kirsty McColl is well worth exploring - she wrote the Tracy Ullman track you reacted to
And sang the line “Ba-by” in Ullman’s version
Brings a tear everytime I hear it. And I've heard it 1000 times.
Agreed..one of the best, and great, great song's
A big yes from me for Rainy Night in Soho......the oboe version.
Dirty Old Town was actually written and first recorded by Kirsty's dad, Ewan MacColl.
"...you took my dreams from me, when I first found you.."
"I kept them with me babe, I kept them with my own! Can't make it out alone, I've built my dream around you...."
Hits me in the feels every time!! Hard!
Shane McGowan...RIP....such a fun song!
The only Christmas song I'll put on repeat during the season. It's my absolute favorite song in the deep winter!
This is one of my absolute favorites. I know I say that a lot but I mean it this time lol
😂
I saw the pogues a few times and they were always good. So many you could check out , streams of whiskey, Sally Maclennane, if I should fall from grace with god etc etc
Hi Jay and Amber, Believe it or not this song is actually my ringtone on my phone 😄😄
Shane McGowan was the lead singer with The Pogues He very sadly passed away last month sged 65 🙏🙏
The female singer is Kirsty McColl, who has also sadly passed away 🙏🙏
RIP Shane McGowan 🙏🙏
RIP Kirsty McColl 🙏🙏
Well, 65 for McGowan would be like 105 for anybody else to be fair
how did he last that long?!
Knowing when to stop I would guess@@keithwarrington2430
Finally got his teeth fixed and then died.
If you are from the UK....this is one of the top 3 Christmas anthems!.......you always end up singing along.
The Greatest Christmas song ever written. So thankful I have a British father. RIP Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl
One of my favourite Christmas songs 🎄💕The instruments you wanted to know about are the accordion and the tin whistle. They are very typically of the instruments you’ll hear being played here in Ireland especially in the pubs ☘️🪗🎼
I do not understand how you got so fR through life without hearing this how?? Just how!!
Not forgetting - There's a Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis 😁
The beginning of the song is just so depressing but then it lights up when Kirsty comes in.
Every Christmas is groundhog day because this song is everywhere, on every radio station, every day, every year.
RIP to both of them.
If you're looking for a contrast in voices, Shane and Sinead O'Conner did a duet called Haunted. Her voice was angelic against his sandpaper vocals and it couldn't have been more perfect.
The original version with Cait O’Riordan is my favourite version of “Haunted”.
My favourite by The Pogues is Thousands Are Sailing.
He was a poet,in all honesty. Alas Kirsty McCall also gone.
This song is the one and only christmas song I am listening to during the season. There is no other christmas song like this🫶
In my top ten Christmas songs - - this is so beautiful when you really listen to it.
I have never heard this song before. It must have been suggested by our UK neighbors. I love it!!
Another superb Irish band are The Dubliners, you should see their duet with The Pogues (live on an Irish chat show). This performance is now legendary. It’s called “The Irish Rover”, and it’s a real must-see.
Thanks 🙏🏻 From Belfast, Northern Ireland.
I would never have a go at you guys for never hearing a song before, but this one… HOW?? You can’t escape it at xmas! It plays everywhere!
YAY!!!
Hi guys, you need to update the title of the song on the thumb nail. It says fairy and not fairytale. Fantastic song choice by the way ❤
best reaction to this song will always been my mums. it came on the tele and she'd never heard it. when shane mcgowan starts singing she was "oh i don't like this" and i said just give it a moment, it might grow on you and as soon as the music changed and kirsty maccoll started singing she was loving it.
My brothers favourite Christmas song ❤ Every time I hear it it stops me in my tracks and makes me smile. 🇬🇧 xxx
And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda. That's my favorite Pogues song. RIP Shane McGowan.
If you're still doing Christmas songs, can you do I Believe in Father Christmas by Greg Lake?
RIP Shane McGowan. RIP Kirsty MacColl. This song was the perfect storm.
And for Kirsty's solo stuff, 'Walking on Madison" and "In These Shoes" are worth a listen. Thanks!
And Christy Dignam of Aslan died last year as well.
Yes! HAHAHA! Glad you loved this.... the Pogues are awesome! Saw them many years ago here in Sydney Australia.
So many great Pogues tunes to try, A Pair of Brown Eyes, Sally MacLennan or Dirty Old Town are just 3 good ones
I would definitely add their version of The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda and Fiesta for the fun vibes.
Best Christmas song ever written!
My sentiments exactly
Greatest Christmas song ever.
Pogues are amazing. Thank you!!
Pogues - Thousands Are Sailing
Pogues - I’m A Man You Don’t Meet Everyday
Pogues - Lorca’s Novena
Pogues - Lullaby of London
Pogues - A Pair of Brown Eyes
Pogues - Dirty Old Town
The Pogues were such a great band, and Shane McGowan was an amazing leader of this band. I bought all of their albums. Definitely hear more from them.
Shane's unique voice was in part due to years of booze and cigarettes and bad dental care. But man, was he a great songwriter!
