- Fairy Tale of New York being sung at a very special Christmas celebration in Campbell's Tavern, Cloughanower, Co. Galway, Ireland. Celebrating at this occasion was Shane MacGowan, The Sharon Shannon Band, singers Mundy, Karan Casey & Joyce Redmond.This show was recorded for the Geantraí music series broadcast on TG4 in 2008 and was presented by the Kerryman, Daithí O'Shea.

If there was ever a free man on earth, it was him and I hope that he will find Kirsty and that they will be able to sing together until the end of eternity. I took my 5 year old son to Ireland for Christmas. He absolutely loved Fairytales of New York. He kept asking me to play it over and over again. He loved the part where the arse word was used as this was new to him in a song. His school in Oz didnt let them say Shut Up. This song appealed to everybody young and old. RIP Shane

The message of Christmas is not a fairy tale, rather that hope and love can defeat anything including addiction. Unfortunately some have to die. It’s a depressing reminder that alcohol will destroy many homes this Christmas. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good melody with strong lyrics but not at this time of year. Give me fiction any day….its the message that matters.

A Documentary called 'The Importance of Shane McGowen' should be given to the people. I must admit I only recently discovered Shane, he has directly influenced not only my singing, but my perception of Just the moment of Loving what you do, whilst you can do it'

Fifteen years ago, we were in a pub on Christmas Eve and Fairytale of New York was played. Everyone in the pub sang along. The atmosphere was, so magical.

Share was a legend. He chose to live his life his unique way, knowing full well he would never see very old age. But it was that uniqueness that also underscored his rich and stunning creativity. In a media age where celebrities act more fake and superficial than ever to look good and beautiful, Shane was the polar opposite. He just did not care. His love was his music and that music reflected the man, and for that we all loved Shane McGowan.
I'm Irish by way of Newfoundland. Nuff said, this is not a Christmas song. This is a song about life. Painful but real.

Never heard this song until I was in a cab in Dublin this year. I found it both strange and lovely. The song writing is incredible. Hats off and RIP.

I first head this tune on my local radio station WFUV in New York. It's been a lyrical wonder ever since. RIP Shane & Kirsty. May the morning dew always shine on your door. I am proud to be Irish with a ton of cred owed to those whose footsteps were legendary. Punks like the Pogues, Black 47, etc etc paved the way for future vocalists in song craft & authentic depth.

A brilliant singer song writer, A true love song in every way! This has been my Christmas song and story for years. Having been clean and sober I still haven't missed a year playing it or have it played. And being raised in Flint and Detroit Michigan 'Dirty old Town' was a favorite anthem as well but I love them all. Going to New York in 86' to see them in the East Village at The Ritz was insane and life changing. And the bow on that present was staying at The Chelsea Hotel. I turned 60 last month my friends and family well even myself thinking I'd never see 25 years old. I've had a full and colorful life and hope yours has been mostly good as well.
