I use the EQ8 in Ableton to tune my drum samples. First, enable the headphones icon on the right, then take a bell filter with a really narrow Q, turn it up to around 10 db and find the frequency that stands out the most, that is usually your pitch. The EQ8 has HZ to pitch conversion when you put your mouse over the graph. It's easy if you have a good ear, just do a couple of passes around and you'll get used to the tonality of the sample. Then you can manipulate the tuning to get it to where you want.
or you could just use spectrum or the method used in this video and save shit loads of time and not have to fuck around with bell filters or EQ, put spectrum in pitch mode, find the pitch and shift it, takes 10 seconds.
my favorite thing about this channel is how you just get to the fucking point instead of wasting 45 minutes talking about shit that may not even matter in the context of the subject or song like literally every other music production channel
Thanks so much for these tutorials, Reid. Would you be able to do a series like start to finish on an entire track / remix? I know it's a huge request, but it would be amazing! Thanks man!
Would love to see a detailed video about "Producing in Key" or "writing in Keyrange" since many young producers (incl. myself ;) ) don't have that much of an musical theory backround.
then you should learn music theory, you cant produce without it, some producers do it and they say they dont know music theory but its a lie, they just dont know what to call it and because of that you'll have a lot of people wondering why they wasted hours and hours producing something only to realize that it sounds bad and it'll never sound better because they weren't able to use theory.
If that was ur mom on the ad during the video she must love you a ton .. thats dope man my moms would never do something like that for me but i love her to death to . Cool video 👍 thx
Is there a way to do it as easy as in FL Studio? You just right click on the drum and click piano roll. In Ableton I find myself using drum-kits where I can't change the key of the drums... If it does not work at all, is there a VST that allowes you to do it?
Or something you could do too guys, is to see where is the tone in the eq of ableton, put your cursor on it, and at the bottom left of the eq window (you will have to extend the size of the eq before), it will show you the note ;)
That's also a good way. I actually combine the two practices. I do Reid's method first.. then once the sample is in key, I use an EQ 8 to double check by playing up the piano scale starting with C and checking the peak tone on the EQ 8. If you double click on the EQ 8, the frequency spectrum becomes larger and shows you the note and frequency while mousing over it (as you've said).
Jupom spectrum works even better IMO, you can double click the display and make the graph much larger and then mouse over and pinpoint the frequency, and it tells you what note corresponds to that frequency too
Or you could just use spectrum analyzer and see where the peak frequency is, subsequently matching hz to notes. You could then transpose the sample to a different note using Frequency Shifter as to not shoot the entire range too far, if you wanted too. Also... is he moving the mouse with his mind;.. how does he do that.
Reid! Could you please talk about creating a good lead for a drop? If you could focus talking about the drop itself. That'd be really helpful because your drops are fire! Thanks.
Love your videos, but don't be dissing tuner, I use it for my guitar, it helps a lot! I had never thought of using it on drums though, I always do that by ear
could you please make it with drum machines or audio samples, not everyone uses Ableton drums when i Try to do this with my drum machines the tuner scramble all notes, I guess it doesn't work on drum machines, do u know what is the best most accurate plugin tuner for drums, since is different with piano synth or guitars because drum samples are too short that probably tuners are not that accurate :/ and I have really bad ear. with audio samples on ableton should I use the pitch to change key?
2:36 "Hey Steph! Are you free Thursday? Yeah, I need your help with something. Bring an apron. No, we ain't bakin'! Stop off at Whole Foods on the way over. Might need some props."
not all notes you end up using end up being in scale and because of this scale can fuck it up or end up making it sound worse, like he said in the video sometimes a sample is atonal anyways so no amount of pitching will put it "in key", i used to do this as well, you dont always have to use scales.
I use Fabfilter pro-Q2 for this... You can place EQ points on your "keyboard" in GUI. And watch the analyzer. These things are made for guitars etc i think? I never trust them for my drumsounds.(well maybe kicks but when doing snares,.... )
It's a shame u stopped uploading music and or anymore vlogs of u preforming. Don't get me wrong I think I R great at explaining things I just wish u didn't change ur channel to tutorial page.
This tutorial makes me wonder if I have a low IQ, because I don't get what is going on here. Maybe Reid should explain what he is doing and why. I mean, maybe he should explain where his mouse is and what he is doing with it and what those things do. Also, once I figure out what the root note is of a sample, how do I put that sample on the root note? For example, let's say the root note of a sample is F, how do I put that sample on the F key of my midi keyboard so every time I hit the F key it plays the sample at it's root note and plays that sample at the key of whatever not I hit on the keyboard?
heard about it from some well known Producers, took their advice and its actually really handy and reliable, sometimes if im not sure ill double check but it always ends up being correct
"quick and easy way to tune drums"................................7 mins to tune a fuckin drum!!! ,in FL studio u just click detect pitch regions on a sample and thats it !
Its 430 AM and Ive been up for over 24 hours working on a track and this puppet sneaking up the screen just fucked me up.
it fuck me up at anytime.
haha =) awww
Jinx

I have no idea why but this style of tutorial just works man
WTF am I doing? I'm watching a puppet producer. Do I need therapy or am I already in one?
Don't take life so seriously.
a puppet better than u in producing
my favorite thing about this channel is how you just get to the fucking point instead of wasting 45 minutes talking about shit that may not even matter in the context of the subject or song like literally every other music production channel
bruh i was too high for that ad
that was a lit whole loops commercial not gonna lie
baron lol omg I thought the same thing
use spectrum and put it to pitch mode. thanks though, its still a very useful technique
o_o
The Real Pro tip
I think they removed pitch mode because I can't find it anywhere
@@mycologyhikingclub1885 It's still there, you should look inside spectrum's folder.
Is this just in ableton
Thumbs up for tutorial tuesday! See you next week with another video
Thanks so much for these tutorials, Reid. Would you be able to do a series like start to finish on an entire track / remix? I know it's a huge request, but it would be amazing! Thanks man!
The realest puppet in tha game, no other than Reid Stefan. Many blessings to you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom.
I was so focused on wondering if these Jellyfish were real that I didn't realize that a puppet was doing this tutorial.

Stay in key and your beats will sound great! Learn your keys!
Tampaterry54 what's sad is there are ignorant producers who make trap and don't know basic basic notes but they are famous making hits. Weird right!?
If that was ur mom on the ad during the video she must love you a ton .. thats dope man my moms would never do something like that for me but i love her to death to . Cool video 👍 thx
this is some quality content that i didn't know i needed
+1 sub
"The realest puppet in the game". Love it!!
Can you use simpler for this or does it need to be sampler?
the puppet shtick is a nice touch
Is there a way to do it as easy as in FL Studio? You just right click on the drum and click piano roll. In Ableton I find myself using drum-kits where I can't change the key of the drums...
If it does not work at all, is there a VST that allowes you to do it?
you guys have the most creatives tuts on UA-cam!
Damn I cannot hear the tone of the operator. At 1:14 /1:18 cant see where you actually put it...?
Or something you could do too guys, is to see where is the tone in the eq of ableton, put your cursor on it, and at the bottom left of the eq window (you will have to extend the size of the eq before), it will show you the note ;)

also the same thing with ableton's default spectrum analyzer!
Loving these, thanks for all of these videos!
the tuner shows nothing when i put it next to a kick.. but the trick with the spectrum works like a charm in seconds.
Nice technique!
Or you could just use spectrum analyzer and see where the peak frequency is, subsequently matching hz to notes. That whole loops beat snaps
the puppet glow up since this video is REAL
OMG THE BEAT AND EVERYTHING AT 2:36 ON
Does this work for melodic samples as well?
yes
using spectrum can help too
Thank you so much from Paris !
holy shit this is pure gold.
i did not expect a good laugh along with solid information. pls, for all of us, keep up the amazing work
Duuuuuude this is so helpful, thx a lot.
happy i subbed to this channel
thanks man very helpful!!!!
damn the puppet has come a long way since these old videos lol
Is this still doable in simpler?
love it
Use saturation and turn the drive up, you will hear the pitch of your sample in no time
Hmm the tuner isn't working in live 11 on kicks for some reason. 🤔
Reid! Could you please talk about creating a good lead for a drop? If you could focus talking about the drop itself. That'd be really helpful because your drops are fire! Thanks.
Hey Stef , I love your Tuto , always usefull !!
one question, How to create ambiance , and background for a track ?
I think the next step is to tune different samples to multiple notes in the key signature, like a flat 3, flat 7 etc. good idea!
AMAZING!
I wasn't expecting a dj puppet to curse 2:20
I love your videos man could you do 2 vids a week?
so the tuner is good for longer sounds but not for percussive elements
Liked and subbed!
subscribing. mainly because I'm so jealous of the focus this puppet has. Look at that fucker staring at the screen working a plugin. just staring
Love your videos, but don't be dissing tuner, I use it for my guitar, it helps a lot! I had never thought of using it on drums though, I always do that by ear

thanx my puffy bro ;)
2:36 "Hey Steph! Are you free Thursday? Yeah, I need your help with something. Bring an apron. No, we ain't bakin'! Stop off at Whole Foods on the way over. Might need some props."
ur deadpan voice makes me crack up sometimes ^^
I usually just use the scale effect in ableton to tune stuff
Shayaa sweet that sounds good. Could you please tell me how to do that?

like? I loved the video... so glad I found this channel!!
Make more video's! (if you got time of course)
All love all your video's so far!
Thx!
finding the right bass for samples
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiits producion time! love this guy or doll! hehehe
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNICE I GOT IT THX
the puppet doll is genius lol
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttsssss production time!
i use spectrum
I don't have an operator :(
I use Fabfilter pro-Q2 for this... You can place EQ points on your "keyboard" in GUI. And watch the analyzer. These things are made for guitars etc i think? I never trust them for my drumsounds.(well maybe kicks but when doing snares,.... )
Dude. That frickin' puppet is harshing me out. His eyes...
a simple arab liked this
I'm surprised how sensitive your ears are considering they're stuffed with cotton.
god :( i wish i was this good i've been watching all your vids learning how to polish a song.
but still no good
It's a shame u stopped uploading music and or anymore vlogs of u preforming. Don't get me wrong I think I R great at explaining things I just wish u didn't change ur channel to tutorial page.
lmao.. that puppet was broke
that lady i really like her and her voice
Yo, the old puppet looks hella weird
This tutorial makes me wonder if I have a low IQ, because I don't get what is going on here. Maybe Reid should explain what he is doing and why. This puppet looks like it’s wearing another puppets skin
I feel like this video is subtly making fun of me.
why not just use Keyfinder, super simple, super quick and reliable
www.pcdj.com/keyfinder-free-key-detection-software/
heard about it from some well known Producers, took their advice and its actually really handy and reliable, sometimes if im not sure ill double check but it always ends up being correct
Fuck me Stafan! You used to look so PALE!
Hope you are married with the blonde woman. She must loves you ! Thanks once again.
Use a fricken spectrum
"quick and easy way to tune drums"................................7 mins to tune a fuckin drum!!! ,in FL studio u just click detect pitch regions on a sample and thats it !
sounds like an arms video lol
Holy fuck man why does everything have to be so fkn complicated in ableton
Use melodyne bro save a century
I love these videos. But the lip syncing on the puppet is worse than a dubbed kung fu movie.
you seem to have so small ears
Wtf
So basically just use samples that are labeled by key or suffer.
or you could watch the video and take those same samples and pitch them to key like the tutorial shows you
Does anyone else find the puppet pointless and annoying?
Tuner didn’t help for shit lmfaoo
