Hi Casper, this is a nice tutorial, but I have a question: In a track, in D major key (for examle), to which note I should tune my kick/snare sample? If my track is in Dmajor, then my kick will be tuned to D, then what key/pitch should be the Snare? D or G or B? I think the snare should be somewhere in D scale, is it right? thank you.
Well thank Joshua a lot, according to your article, if my bassline is in D scale, then I should pitch my kick up to a perfect fifth to avoid the fight of kick & bass, right? :D please correct if i'm wrong.
@@waithere119 snare is higher frequency to the kick (a higher octave range) so they won’t take up the same freq space so you can use the same note but it’s fine to also use perfect 5th (or anything from pentatonic scale to avoid any heavy pitching)
What would I do with out your tutorials? Found this when I really needed it. Found the last question I needed with the same guy. So nice that Joshua is out here doing this stuff for all of us to learn from. Thank You. Thank You so much!!!!
hey joshua thanks for the tutorial. I noticed that the Snare drum has another peak that is seemingly close to E2, possibly a A2 I'm not sure. how do you decide that E2 is the root note but not the other peak?
i have a question for example if my song is in C ok ... and the kick shows me C and i change the root key in sampler to C then if i put the kick in the fifth note G would it be then in C or G in spectrum and in general
And how do you later put the percussion on the music key? I am producing psy trance and I always put my kick 5 semi tones below the bass note (rolling bass) and sound as if they were one but I do not know what to do with snares, hi hats open/close, claps, shaker, whatever thanks
Hello, why you change the rootkey if when you change the note on the piano it also change on the spectrum ? sorry i am french there is something i do not underrstand
Nice tutorial, thank you.i have a question: how do i find a key of a kick that i all over the place, moving pitch.bringing octave up doesn't help much!?and a second question:how drums should be pitched in terms of scale degree?for example:i've read some where that snare should the 5th kick is root.is that true and what about rest of the drums like toms low mid high rims?
I'm using the Ableton Midi Preset "Tunable Boom Drone"... trying to figure out the tuning of... everything... I setup Spectrum and I'm playing "C1"... and my spectrum at the highest point is A0. But my preset claims it's C1 and I don't think I can change the root note in that Ableton preset. Is the spectrum wrong or is my preset wrong? Or am I doing something wrong in Spectrum? I did double check your settings vs. mine and read your article from before. Is spectrum wrong sometimes?
Hello thank you for that tutorial but i don't understand what is the purpose ? you mean this is usefull to make the whole instrumentts works together right ? to have a beautifull equalization ?
Joshua Casper thanks I know how to find the Keynote already butmaybe you can answer should everything be within that E2 scale , keys synths etc or ?? I’m just wondering if this song should all be within the scale like all the elements thanks again
thank God I found another way to find the right key. sometimes the Tuner plugin in Ableton doesn't pick up the frequency. that's frustrating especially when you're in the zone 🤑
Question, I understand you are looking for the highest peak to determine the root note. Although If I were doing this myself I would be slightly conflicted on which one would be the highest peak. I see there is another SUPER high peak right next to it (to the right), looks about the same height If Im not mistaken. So how do I determine which to inspect?.. The highest/lowest? Or am I just wrong and there is no higher peak?... It just looks like its the same height.
Invest in Mixed in Key, you won't regret it. Here is an article I wrote a while back about it... ask.audio/articles/harmonic-dj-mixing-how-to-do-it-why-it-works-why-using-mixed-in-key-helps
Okay, so since I write my tracks drums first with my kick being the lowest note of my drums, is that the root note my track is in and all melodies and chords should be written around it? Also, HUGE thanks for the simplest explanation, I've known about this trick for years, but didn't understand how to apply it to my tracks unless my question makes sense!
Here is another tutorial on where to tune your kick drum in relation to your tracks. www.joshuacasper.com/ableton-tutorials/which-root-note-to-tune-your-kick/
Yeah, but this explains how to write my drums to my melody/chords, I want to write my melody/chords to my drums because I start with beats first. So I ask are my drums my root note? I'm no way a keyboardist or piano player, so it makes no sense to me to have a melody and tune my drums to that because I never start with a melody or chord. Does that makes sense?
Its great to be able to find the key if you really need to, but honestly if you like the way it sounds Use It ....if it doesnt fit dont use it. When you change the pitch you are degrading the sample... Id rather use the right sample that sounds like it fits. To many reasons to list here but its about integrity thru out. But this is a great skill to know for sure
The key of your track.. would be better to use Mixed in Key, or something similar.. ask.audio/articles/harmonic-dj-mixing-how-to-do-it-why-it-works-why-using-mixed-in-key-helps
of course... but, I'm guessing you don't have any other choices. Are you transposing entire songs? one note samples? chords? percussion? everything changes everything... I was just answering the question as it was asked.
My confusion is that when I use this method in this video I want my kick to be in F for example it shows me D root note and I put the root note in d then if I change the midi notes to f key it will show F in spectrum or not ????
I just read your website and to clarify; Let's say my track is in the key of B Minor If my kick's root is at A3, should I tune it to A3 then play the perfect 5th of B which is F#?
anything with enough melodic content is worth tuning... if it's just noise (literally) then you don't need to worry about... also, most really quick / snappy percussive elements.
@@AR-wb6vc You probably figured this out but for anyone else reading just use the same technique. Just drop the spectrum onto the square in the drum rack that contains the sample you want to tune or drop the spectrum after the drum rack but then make sure you solo the sound you want to tune
Hi Casper, this is a nice tutorial, but I have a question: In a track, in D major key (for examle), to which note I should tune my kick/snare sample? i got about kick and bass but what about kick and snare,, what will be their relation in a scale?

try both figure out what sounds better
Thank you so much! I was looking for custom tuning for samples. I want to have one octave spread across 4 or 5 octaves for sound FX purposes.
What schows the key , the lagest peak or the first one ??
great little video this....very helpful - thanks

Hell yeah! Thanks for posting this video Joshua Casper!! :)
How do you do this on an audio track instead of midi?
Thanks a lot for this information 👊🏻
you're welcome! Feel free to share the video around :)
Thanks a million! This is much easier than using tuner...

Joshua Casper You're so punny
Thanks a lot for this man..needed
glad it helped
What can you use in fl studio?
Hey Joshua what key do you have to hit on your keyboard to find out if its the root note or not? C3?
Hems port samples loaded into sampler are triggered at their normal speed at C3.
Thanks my dude!

Hi there so if my snare is in E2 should my kick and bass line be the same or just in the scale of E thanks 🙏🏽

key” option - can anyone help?❤

Mitch S highest peak to the left is your best bet....
Appreciate it

Is there a tutorial on how you can find the keys of an entire track or different parts of a track?
(Think along the lines for a dj)

Doc Holidaze right, so, just go the perfect fifth down, bro
Wait, what? Uggghhh, what do I go down a perfect fifth?
Never mind, thanks anyways.

Thank you

if the spectrum shows its in C3 and i want it to be in E2 what would i do ????
look at a keyboard, count how many notes it is from C3 to E2 and transpose the sample by that many semitones.
Well I have heard somewhere that transpose ing that way is wrong it changes the feel of that sample ......
of course... but, I'm guessing you don't have any other choices. Are you transposing entire songs? one note samples? chords? percussion? everything changes everything... I was just answering the question as it was asked.
One note
My confusion is that when I use this method in this video I want my kick to be in F for example it shows me D root note and I put the root note in d then if I change the midi notes to f key it will show F in spectrum or not ????

HANDEL HYPE! 5ths are the best... 3rds.. 7ths. .. honestly, whichever sounds best :)
Joshua Casper Awesome, thanks again
Why does Ableton cant detect it automaticly? 2020
You helped me a lot
ur great bro
Thanks I’m subscribing
good to hear it!
Does this work w/ chords?
try it out.. i believe it will if the chord is clean
i just tried... it does. As long as there isn't too much processing.
you the man
must be an easier way.. is there an easy way in kontakt?
no really ... if you can't hear it, you will need a device
i'm new to making music and i am not shure what needs tuning and what not..
anything with enough melodic content is worth tuning... if it's just noise (literally) then you don't need to worry about... also, most really quick / snappy percussive elements.

thanks alot :D

why is it so important, where is the difference
music theory ... certain frequencies don't work well with others... keys, scales, chords...

is it me or you sound like wildcat from vanoss gaming? 😂😉
Habadoo Habadoo not sure what that is
