I missed the first 3 minutes of the video because I was spacing out on the puppet thinking about what the process might be to have the puppet talk while he is talking.
I'm almost certain that he just records voice over as he does everything in ableton, then afterwards syncs it with the puppet. I've spent ALOT of time thinking about it lmao
On the real though, my production started going forward since the day I found your channel. Thank you so much. Would be awesome if you kept uploading these tutorials!

Great tutorial - seen many on the mastering with Ableton stock plugins. Just why the heck do we do a double glue compressor on the return track? Is this for everytime or just trial and error with each track...
Great video!! We are new to the live scene. Just wanted to know why send them to sends and not just process them on the group?? Then group the groups into a mix bus channel ? Thank you!
Do you use the same patterns to master a rock song or other Styles where you have real instruments ? I Love Ableton but I don’t know how to master other genres of music
Do you have a similar tutorial for mastering a wav file? Sometimes I end up having to remaster something that I had commissioned or some people say* that it's better to master after the export...
Hey Reid , awesome video as always. Ive reached the end of my mix but unfortunately haven't gain staged properly, I'm just about to clip without anything on the master (@-.05!), is it advisable to pop a utility on the master to bring it back by 3 or 4 db so I then have headroom to use limiter?
You could do that, or you could just select all the groups/tracks and turn them down until the headroom is achieved. This is what I do as long as I don't have any volume automations on the tracks (grouping tracks is helpful to circumvent this).
Great video! Thanks a lot! In regard to the groups you make: Would it be safe to say you're grouping by frequency ranges? (E.g. the leads and vocals are largely occupying medium ranges so you group those together?
Should the parallel compression be done after you're finished with your track? Or while you're still in the process of creating your song? Like is it a finalizer? If you know what I mean? Lol sorry for all the questions.
Your videos are great Reid. Just to clarify: this is the final mix/master of this track all done in this session? I know it might sound like a dumb question, but over the years I have had so many different producers tell me they bounce out a 2-track of the mix then master in a new session...or even go as far as bouncing out separate stems to a new session to re-mix...which all seems redundant to me. NEVER have I heard one of these guys tell me they mix AND master all in the same session, but so far your tutorials have been awesome and quite honestly, I would follow your lead from now on! Thanks again!
DJ Organic first of all, great name. Secondly, I’ve done it both ways and hear no difference so most of my tracks are produced mixed and mastered all in the same session.
Hey man I'm wondering if you could clarify something for me. I often see producers searching for the "frequency that doesn't sound good" (5:19) But what does that mean? If I highlight any particular frequency, it usually doesn't sound good to me. I don't understand how to discern. Thanks in advance
You sort of have to trust your ears a little! That's with everything on the master, actually. But, just find which frequencies sound worse/louder than the others on the spectrum. It is usually required to cut in the mid hi-s and hi-frequencies.
Yo, this is late but listen for like a consistent ringing when you boost, find those peaks, and drop them. Don't go overboard though. Like 3-4 of those kind of cuts is probably all you need
@@EthanRadell is that why sometimes I hear this nasty sound (example like on pads instruments or piano) when playing my beats in my car speakers it makes this weird sound sometimes?
To clear things up, basically all you have to search for are resonance peaks (which tend to sound like a weird windy whistle), distorted frequencies (they usually appear when the frequencies of some elements in your mix sort of multiply and get distorted) and smoothing some harsh low/mids/highs. These things you can previously correct in the mixing process by listening carefully to the sound itself, some reverb plugin or saturator you may have. Although sometimes you can't just solve every single detail when mixing (sometimes even without messing up), mastering is a great place where you can fix those very few tiny problems. Frequently (and almost always) a grear mastering is done and led by a great mixing :) p.s sounded like a autohelp book at the end lol
Yes he does, maybe not all the individual tracks, for example if you have two similar vocal tracks you can process them together if you want, that would save you some space. After mixing the individual tracks you can do what he did in this video.
Awesome !! i ve heard that When you are mastering your own music, you can bounce out the groups of tracks as .wav files to put into a new project it gives you much more control over each group of tracks, or ‘stem’. what you think about that is it true ????
so do any of these tracks individually have ANY compression EQ or anything on them to begin with or are you running everything at the end through the return as an "all encompassing" bus?
@@benengland1710 You're right. He didn't mention that you're supposed to set the send compressor and saturator as pre fader in order to parallel inject. They are both set to post in this video.
Well what you're doing in that other session is what you're doing in the Master Track. The Master Track takes all the other tracks and controls them all at once in just one track
do you know how to Change a track from A440 to A432? So how do you Change the Standard pitch down 8hz? I once had a 432 Player Music App on my Smartphone. 8hz equivalates to 32 Cents. I can only tune my Nordstage down or up by 50cent steps, so I can not achieve the desired Standard pitch of 432 Hertz Right now. Can you help me to Recommend me a external plug in or an other way of Operation to do this please. It converted the Music down by 8 hz but as a Producer, how can you shift down the whole track? Much love to All!
On an audio file in Ableton, you "Detune" to -32 ct in the sample display, under transpose. If it sounds wonky, you'll have to adjust the warp mode afterward - usually tones or complex/complex pro works out. Individual MIDI instruments are a little harder to figure out. Each one usually has a different spot to adjust. Some make it easy, but usually you have to click into the devices within the instrument. There could be a macro called "fine tune" - Grand piano has that. Or if it's another electronic instrument, you will find a knob or indicator that will say "detune" or "fine" in which you tune the instrument down to -32 ct. You will know you are correct when you have a Tuner "effect" on the Audio (which you'll also have to bring down -32 ct) and it shows you're in tune. Technically you're fine with your Nord Stage (wish I had one!)... 50 ct is equal to a half step, I think. So technically you'd be tuned to A=432hz when you tune down -32 ct there as well.
@@noahheyl3571 You would need to know how to tune pianos. Or hire a piano tuner to tune all the keys down. You need special equipment I think. Wish I knew how.

I need help. Whenever I try to mix I can't get my production to sound as full or even as loud as the professional mixes without my stuff peaking and becoming distorted. What do I do?
This is what I learned this past month or so, with help from videos and tutorials and a friend: 1. on each track, try not to use an eq, use a filter to adjust the sound. 2. then, once all of your sounds are in place, add a Utility effect on each track. reduce the gain on each to -10db. 3. then place an eq 8 on each track and use the eq to BOOST and LOWER the frequencies, and to move the sound into the proper frequency range as to not overlap with too much with other sounds. Try not to add a limiter to the individual tracks, but if you need to increase the volume, then do so. 4. On the Master chain, add a Multiband Dynamics and a limiter, and adjust from there. at each step, make sure you are not in the red anywhere. Try not to use the eq 3, use eq 8, it will help to better understand what you are doing. EQ 8: everything within the line is kept. In the past I would never use eq 8, I would always use eq 3 because I got the sound I wanted, but when it was time to finish , I had problems. So no eq until almost the end, as I mention in the steps above. I think when eq'ing, start with the kick and the bass, after that , the other sounds are easier to deal with. Just make sure your kick is coming thru as much as you FEEL it should.
Not really. Yes Pro-Q (2) is dank and has linear phase mode for mastering eq goodness, but eq8 will get you by for most stuff. Taking the time/practice to get really good at mixing is more important than which eq you're using imo.
I use ableton mainly and personally the EQ is totally fine. Sure other EQ's have color coded frequencies and stuff but sound wise it works great for a stock plug in.
Smh I literally got all those 3rd party plugins last night and mastered for the first time. This could have saved much trouble if it came out a day before hahaha

I found EQ eight to work great when you switch off adaptive Q. This takes away the harshness in boosting mentioned in the vid.
thanks for bringin this up
How do I turn adaptive Q off from the eq?
