Instead of nudging the midi notes, I just use a simple delay in the track and nudge from there. It is so much easier to edit midi note patterns without having to re-nudge them every time.
just insert a Simple Delay effect on your hi hat track, set it to 100% wet, 0 feedback, link left and right channels, set the delay mode to Time so it's in milliseconds, and just increase the delay time to taste, I like it between 6-10ms, depending on the track and genre.
Yeah, I used to do that, but in some projects I started having sync issues for some reason. Not sure why, probably has to do with latency compensation. Might not be the case for other users, so in that case this solution is clearly the simplest.
I notice that some people turn on Glide Mode in Simpler for their 808s. Would that work for Hi Hats? Or would that create a totally different effect to your pitch bend automation?
meeeeeen!!! 4 ableton use only drum rack....the arpegiator in midi effects....the main reverb...switch with the drum rack effects...and most inportant use ur ears !!! super easy !!!
It'd be awesome if you could make a video producing a whole song start to finish and only speaking your thoughts (for time's sake) instead of speaking directly to the user so you could keep your natural pace. I know that'd be a pain in the ass for editing in the puppet later though.
Whole Loops Urban beats, you can see the name of the folder. :) (don't know exactly which one out of the series, but I think its safe to say they all have great drums)
I have a question. How do you eq to get a thick hi hat. No matter where I put it in the mix the hi hat can't be heard that much. It kinda disappears in the mix. I know why, because it's a tin like sounding hi hat and if it were a little thicker it would stand out more in the mix. I have to eq it to thicken it up but I don't know what frequencies to mess around with. If I were to guess probably 1k-3k to thicken it up, but I'm not sure. I need a hi hat to sound like the hi hat in Eminem's song "Venom". That's exactly what I want my hi hat to sound like. It sounds thick.
Hey Reid. I don’t know if I saw it but did you have a video on gain staging? I apologize if u have one. If so what’s it under? I have a phonic ti8100 preamp and a dbx two channel compressor.
Gain staging is simple: just maintain your signal "under zero" or "under the red" (which is to say, prevent the signal from distorting via overloading the circuits) when passing the signal along to the next device. When doing this, one should ensure the previous (input) signal was at a nominal level (just below zero, towards the top of the green getting into yellow) by turning that previous signal's level up to this territory. Gaistaging in Recording Your equipment has physical limits. You can only fill up so much of it with signal ("sound") before it overloads and distorts. Similarly, you could imagine filling up only 1% of that limit. Imagine recording a microphone with only 1% volume. When you go to listen back, you will need to crank the volume by X100. Great, youll hear your voice, fine, but remmber that doing this will increase the volume of the WHOLE recording X100. Your voice will finally be at an audible level, but the background noise, natural equipment noize, cable noise will all be SUPER NOTICABLE as well. This is an example of a very low (or quiet) signal-to-noise ratio. You want to avoid this by maximizing your signal at every step of the way a.k.a gainstaging a.k.a having a high SIGNAL-to-noise ratio. Gainstaging in Processing: If you pass along a distorted signal, its distorted sound will feed into the next thing, and into the next, and so on. The distorted signal feeds into the processor, the processor effects the signal, and sends it along to the next, the result of which being different to if the input signal had NOT been distorted. What if you want to turn a bit of that distorted sound down? Well, there is no way to without going back to that first instance of the distorted signal and turning it back down under Zero and passing that "healthy" signal into the rest of the processing. Of course, when a signal exceeds the limit of the circuitry system in analog equipment, it creates pleasant harmonic distortions which sometimes sounds great. Just remember: if you decide to record that (like you might record through a compressor), you cant undo that distortion--it becomes part of the signal/recording. Bottom line -- make sure you're keeping your signal max'd as to avoid having too much background noise, but not too max'd as to distort your recordings or processing. If you want to max it all out to smithereens and completely shlotter the sound, cool. Because distorted sound needs love too. Just be sure that you really want to do that if you're recording, or have the ability to manage/control it by some other methods after-the-fact. In your case, I would start with a preamp. Crank that to the nominal level or beyond it (explained above). Into compressor. Smash your compressor or take it lightly, just make sure to set its output level to nominal (high green) before sending it Into mixer/interface/usb. Cant speculate much other than that in your case sorry if that doesnt even apply. In the digital world, this all doesnt really matter as much though. The "gainstaging in processing" section above still applies. But you basically have more opportunities to just turn it down somewhere along the way and have it be alright (a product of digital coding vs. physical electronic circuits). Digital distorted sound is intense and far uglier (odd harmonic distortion) than analog distortion (even harmonic distortion)
instead of nudging why not use track delay (or however its called) at the bottom of every channel in milliseconds? nudging would be the same, but when 1 is still editing the pattern, having to nudge every note added after manually is just way to annoying.
dude really scratched his head like he's itchy love this channel

is there a tutorial specifically on how to use that with hi hats?

Is there any difference in sound quality?
there should not be
Yeah, I used to do that, but in some projects I started having sync issues for some reason. Not sure why, probably has to do with latency compensation. Might not be the case for other users, so in that case this solution is clearly the simplest.
wow i would've never thought to nudge the hats over... great tutorial as usual!
gotta have that swing!
bruh i've been individually panning hi hats for like a year LMAO thank u
Most clever mixing tutorial page EVER! Great channel Reid!
Solid tips.. thank you :)
Really love your videos ! I'm not so much in trap, but your kind of tricks are really useful for other genre too. Thanks for it ! and keep it up !

Boosting the resonance in the filter a bit and changing the filter to ms20 filter with a little drive can make them pop a little better as well.
a little bit of FM envelope and soft clip dunt hurt nubudy either
osr is prolly better for hats
you cold wit it Reid!!

From Newzealand your helping me alot man. sooo good!
Love that 808 sound
I notice that some people turn on Glide Mode in Simpler for their 808s. Would that work for Hi Hats? Or would that create a totally different effect to your pitch bend automation?
Wow. One of your best videos
this beat is INSANEEEEE
Great video dude. Thanks!
THis is the hardest beat you’ve made !! Absolute fyyyye🔥

lmao after you finished i tried to press command S on my keyboard...
i tried to rewind the video with ctrl z
:)
lmao
Great video as always
Hey Reid, can you make a tutorial on loudness and optimizing mixdowns for streaming services?
Some sound design for synths outside of serum is much needed on youtube homie, awesome tutorial btw
This is some secret sauce right here, good stuff!
Realest puppet dropping knowledge bombs 💣
Great videos, thanks man they help a ton!

Dude I love your videoz
Holy molly how do you make these 20 minute tutos without blinking?
Hahaha
meeeeeen!!! 4 ableton use only drum rack....the arpegiator in midi effects....the main reverb...switch with the drum rack effects...and most inportant use ur ears !!! super easy !!!
“ Hit the letter zero”😂😂👌🏾
Oh Reid, this is what i actually needed lol. Thanks for the tips, u are da best! 😂✌
the realest puppet. in. the game.
How does he turn down the velocity of the notes all at once?
did you forget the whole loops ad in the last one?
shaboi
There was 3 minutes of emptiness at the end so I reuploaded this

amazing thank you

Thanks Reid! My hats have been stale for awhile.
What were the drum samples you used?

Maybe your hi hats are in the center of your mix and need to be panned to the sides slightly to stop disrupting your vocals or other sounds
How did you turn that one hit on the grid to a 16th note?
thx a lot
