I didnt get it the first few times i listened to way out west i didnt pick up all the subtleties and nuances but i kept persevering with it. I now love it.
Amen brother, a Golden Age of Jazz Vinyl indeed. We're getting so used to having all these remarkable reissues coming out that we think it will last forever. "It won't". We have a chance now to get copies of some of the greatest music ever created on our beloved media. Buy them now and you'll have music that you will appreciate for a lifetime. Hope you get better soon Ken. 👽✌️ FYI, you need to check that mic. Sounds muffled.
Great review Ken! I had the honor to meet him personally years ago (1976) in Vancouver B.C. He was very humble and took the time to talk to an elderly couple in front of me. Love all his albums and Sonny meets Hawk. I had an original deep groove way out west with that beautiful Roy Dunan sound!
I’ll keep saying it: most lively and , engaging “jazz/vinyl” channel on UA-cam, anchored by the most knowledgeable host-the rest are pretenders and/or stuffy poseurs. By the way, chic glasses, Ken! Keep bringing it!
Those MMJ's that had a weird smear on them came from those Pink RTI sleeves that were leaching something. If you ever find a record with a pink RTI sleeve, (pressed around the early 2010's) clean them and replace with a new the inner sleeve.
Masterworks indeed. As an aside, people do not realize how debilitating and depressing it is when you hurt your ankles. I know from personal experience. I twisted both ankles at some time using stairs and at a gym. The ligaments flare up sometimes. Thank God for pain killers and walking sticks and shoes that hold feet properly. People take their feet for granted until they get hurt. Cheer up. Get well quick.
Awesome video as always , my favorite UA-cam channel , I have never agreed with your music matters Takes nevertheless I'm always in awe of your knowledge.
4:22 You are 100% correct, this is a real golden era for jazz collectors. I'm not sure whether I'll run out of shelf space or money faster... 💸 Look after that ankle.
Hi Ken thanks for the videos. I bought a Craft "Go West" box about a year ago (?). Please can you ask the Craft guy if they'll be releasing "Contemporary Leaders" as a single album soon? thanks again from Joburg, South Africa.
Ask for your money back on that microphone... and maybe on the ankle too. Seriously man, what are we going to do with you? Don't make me come up there. If I'm not mistaken, when I preordered this it had a release date of late June
Hello again from southern Florida, Your new eyeglasses are verrrrry nice . hmm. Sorry for you on that ankle break, Care to tell the story behind the break ? I shattered my right ankle back in 95, I haven't yet had the pins removed and probably never will. It took me a year to recover properly, I dreamed of walking again. Now I can walk 7.5 miles on any given day, but I still can feel the pins . You look pretty good and well rested. Tony Kazz
This was an unboxing video. Not a review. I will compare to the presses. I have on hand shortly. But I believe it will easily sound better than the Japanese re-issues which tend to be rolled off on top and bass, heavy, though wonderfully silken sounding.
Why do alternate takes of all of these great albums? Just give us a great remastering of the original album. The original takes were chosen for good reason. I do not need alternate takes of these tracks. I have limited storage space as it is.
This is Sonny Rollins complete work on contemporary records. A complete set. That’s the point. If they left out one of three records, it would not be complete.
I really enjoy your videos. You have so much jazz knowledge and your opinions are what makes you, you. Get well.
Cool stuff. Dig the glasses -- Mike

Thank you. I appreciate your comment more than I can say.
Looking forward to it as I only have the OJC pressing from the 80s. Also, will tune in the next vid.
William Claxton did the photography for Way Out West and The Contemporary Leaders.

Great review! Did you change you mic? This video sounds a lil muffled.

I’m glad you are healing well Tony. I plan to be the same, good Lord, willing.
nice set. Ken, sounds like you microphone headed south.
And how does it sound?! Is it woth it over the dead silent japanese pressings from the 60s and 70s?

Ken Academy Lp has Way out West. a 1 or early Mono pressing of this on their wall in Brooklyn
Give them call
Anthony, honestly way out west is not my favorite sunny record so perfectly happy with this box that but thank you
it was just to compare pressings
Yes! Mucho dinero… but fantastic records.
Was this video recorded in the early fifties, too?
Yes, you have a good ear

@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 So?
@@ergloo6660stop complaining. Just don’t buy it.
Just wait, "Go West" will be released as a single album within 6-8 months. Please stop feeding the FOMO
Always enjoy your experienced insight Ken… but did not enjoy audio on this particular effort 🧏
Yeah, the new microphone I got sucks. I should’ve checked the audio before posting. Thank you.
