I got into Sonny Rollins via his Horn Culture album from 1973. That was Sonny's tentative dabbling into fusion style jazz. The jazz purists and critics seem to loathe it, but personally I love it!

If you love it, that’s all that matters. It’s always a bit suspicious when people want to convince one why a certain style is “better”. 😊 Maybe they are still trying to convince themselves.

Phil!!! I don't even know where to start with this!! First, the fact that you did this at all, Jazz, and SONNY ROLLINS no less during some of his greatest years, wowwww. I am totally impressed. Me, as a professional jazz bassist, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you doing this video on your channel mostly devoted to rock and progressive rock which I grew up playing and loving as well (still do.) You exemplify great TASTE my friend, and the fact that you are probably stimulating the interest of hundreds to thousands of rock fans who've yet to develop an appreciation for great jazz music is beyond measure. God Bless you my friend. You are a gentleman and a scholar! Love from NYC. VG

Thank you 🙏 I will be covering a lot more jazz as well plus classical, pop and have already introduced soul, folk and fusion. Although rock centric as it’s how I got into music I want Now Spinning Magazine to be like those music magazines weekly newspapers from the past where all genres were covered. I think many music fans expand their horizons as they go through life. Phil :)

      Love the eclecticism!
      Is that a word????

Great to see that you are going more into Jazz! I spent many years focusing mainly on Classical, then I discovered Jazz, now (another 20 years later) I’m back rediscovering Rock/Pop, the stuff I grew up with in the 70s. All of it was and is worth while. The only thing I regret is that time flies by so fast. Rollins, still with us at 92 (!) is one of my favourites. Others mentioned on this set are definitely also worth checking out: Hampton Hawes was a great pianist, Shelly Manne one of my favourite drummers.
If you can get hold of “Shelly Manne & His Men - Complete Live at the Black Hawk”, give it a try. It’s a 4 CD set, recorded in 1959, but in great sound. The set is on “Essential Jazz Classics” (EJC55740), featuring Joe Gordon (trumpet), Richie Kamuca (tenor sax), Victor Feldman (piano) and Monty Budwig (bass).
    Happy exploring!!

Glad you're highlighting jazz (aside from fusion) and Sonny is a trailblazer. His "Next Album" from 1972 was one of my first vinyl purchases ever bought under the railway bridge at Kingston Upon Thames in a very small smokey record store. Can't remember what made me buy it (must have read about in Melody Maker?) but his take on Skylark is still something I'll put on the turntable at least a few times each year.

I like the way you talk about the sense of discovery. I remember when I started getting into jazz and was explaining it to a fellow rock fan. I told him “Remember how cool it was when you discovered a great group that nobody else seemed to know about? It happens to me all the time now.”

I got into jazz in the early 70's via Santana when they issued the Welcome album. There is a track written by John Coltrane. I had no idea who he was. About the same time a lot of twofer albums were coming out on the Prestige label. Some were Coltrane. Then I found a guy called Miles Davis featured as well. The rest is history.

I have the remastered cd's from decades ago. The sound recordings were always amazing. I have to get this box though. Sonny is still going strong aged 92. He has recently been working on a project to issue unreleased recordings he made in the 1960's. I have a few thousand jazz cd's.

Nice review Phil, it sounds like another one for my list, this period with Miles and John Coltrane was so fertile, I have a good few Jazz albums in this era and this set will be joining them I think!

Jazz needs more exposure!! Nice box set with classic jazz music. Got both albums on vinyl. Sonny Rollins is an all time saxophone jazz giant. Mandatory is the word for this. Another excellent box set is Complete recordings at the Village Gate. 6 CD archival live recordings. The other side of Sonny Rollins indeed! With Don Cherry, Billy Higgins and Bob Cranshaw. Long and demanding improvisation jazz music with intuitive playing by master musicians. Saludos desde México.
