Love this album. Great explanation
Thank you! From the ones I have heard, although cut from a digital transfer, in my room, from my equipment to my ears, my fav clearly is the 2009 OJC repress.
I just got a new OJC copy of this record, and hearing it for the first time was revelatory! I have no others for comparison I just know I love the album!
Way Out West is one of my fav. jazz records too :-) It took a long time and three different 70's US Contemporary reissues to find the "right one" for my taste : a "yellow label" with early D2 / D2 Stampers.Surprised how good this sounded. Original metalwork stamped on clean, 70s vinyl !(Good way to hear an early stereo cut without breaking the bank.)
You can read a very interesting and detailed review by Robert Brook in his blog : thebrokenrecord .(WAY OUT WEST Reveals the ENDGAME In ANALOG AUDIO , February 23, 2023)
@@lucullus6127 thanks for posting this!
Well this was a nice find! Completely random as I was simply doing a search on the 79 Japanese pressing to see what people thought of it. I didn't start out looking for a shootout between multiple copies but this ended up being exactly what I was looking for without realizing it. I have the OJC copy which I really like but came across a Japanese one for sale and was trying to avoid an impulse buy. The reviews on it are fantastic but I wanted to get a better sense. It is tempting to buy it but it's running about 35 bucks so with shipping a little over 40. Based on your excellent review I'm going to keep the OJC and save my money for an original press that might pop up at some point. I really liked your methodology and your descriptions of each and the fact that you tried to stay neutral. One of the better shootout videos I have seen so far. The only comment I have, and it's not a criticism just an observation, is some of the other variables obviously include the equipment used. The turntable, the cartridge, the amplifier the speakers, All of those have a dramatic impact on the treble in bass that you refer to. I have several setups in my house all of which vary significantly. It might help if you mention what you're using at the beginning of the video. It's possible I missed it or that it's in the description but I don't think offhand that it is. Anyway really enjoyed this and it was very helpful thank you.
Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate your feedback. Yes, I did include the equipment in the description. I used Fluance RT85 with Ortofon Blue, Schiit Mani Phono Preamp, Yahama HS8 Speakers.
@@bellisariosonic great set up! The Mani is ridiculously good for the price. Same with fluance. I do think that ortofon could add to that upper end sharpness you mentioned for the OJC press. Imo I find the blue to be a bit clinical. In that price range I prefer the ortofon om-20 super. I don't know those speakers. Aren't Yamahas known for their punchiness? Great for rock but maybe too harsh for jazz? Again I don't know them so I could be wrong. I really like paradigms for jazz. Would be interesting to do this shootout with a different cart and speakers.
I have the Wax Time vinyl pressing of this album. Any idea how that stacks up to the three u have?
I have a couple of waxtime records and to me, they sound more like a CD than a record. They don't have much depth or warmth to them.
Because they are cheaply made from digital sources in Europe, and by European license legislation they are allowed to reissue them bypassing licensing. Avoid for all above reasons!
