Two years after the formal withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, with the UK government constantly embroiled in scandals, it is increasingly clear that Scotland's future is in Europe. Join thousands of Europeans who have already expressed their solidarity with our Scottish friends and let's ask EU leaders to support Scotland's desire to rejoin the EU as an independent country.
Organised by Europe for Scotland, the pan-European grassroots campaign that promotes European solidarity with Scotland.
Voice: Val McDermid
Music: "Green" and "Blue" from the album Colours by Dimitri Scarlato

In the EU Referendum in 2016, Scotland voted overwhelmingly to Remain. Scotland's decision was clear and united: every single council district voted to stay in the EU. But Scotland's rejection of Brexit made no difference. Two years ago, we were wrenched out of the EU regardless.
Brexit shone a stark light on the lie we were told ahead of our 2014 independence referendum. Then, the Westminster government stressed repeatedly that the only way to stay in the EU was to stay in the UK. Two years later, we understood the depth of that deceit, the hallmark of the decades long political divergence between Scotland and England.
While England imagines itself as "Global Britain" Scotland understands the power of small nations working together. While the UK government framed its immigration policy as creating a "hostile environment" Scotland wants to remain a welcoming nation and Scots activists have repeatedly prevented deportations. The Scottish government has always spoken out against Brexit and in solidarity with EU citizens that have chosen Scotland as their home.
Scotland's governing SNP and the Scottish Green party seek not just independence but want Scotland to rejoin the EU, goals that gave them their largest ever share of votes and parliamentary seats in the Scottish elections in May. But not all Scots feel reassured that Scotland would be welcome back in the EU.
We want to campaign for independence with clarity about our future connection to a continent where we want to work, travel, study, settle, love and live. Therefore, we are asking EU institutions to take a stand and give Scotland the reassurance that we need, the reassurance that we would be welcome back.
European civil society is already leading the way. Last year, Europe for Scotland published an open letter to EU leaders, signed by leading academics and many of my fellow writers from all across Europe, including Elena Ferrante, Daniel Kehlmann and Colm Toibin. My colleagues Ian McEwan and Philip Pullman were among many signatories from England. I believe they signed the letter not only from solidarity with us Scots but also because they hope the end of Brexit begins in Scotland.
Those distinguished signatories have already been joined by thousands of other EU citizens. Their enthusiasm and solidarity have been so heartening. I am confident that as more citizens join them, their politicians will add their voices in support.
Rejoining the EU as an independent country would renew close relationships with European countries that were first forged hundreds of years ago, connections whose loss grieves us.
Scotland was an independent state until it entered the Union with Great Britain and Ireland in 1707 on an equal footing with England. It remains a nation today, as well as its own devolved government, it has different legal systems, educational arrangements, distinct languages (Gaelic and Scots) and divergent cultural traditions and customs.
Already, Scotland has demonstrated its capacity to serve its citizens. We have become a modern, outward looking nation at a time when England has developed a frightening strand of aggressive populism. Nobody claims that Scotland would be a land of milk and honey, where everyone will be happy and whisky will flow in the streets. We have our problems like any modern democracy. But I think the country we could become is better than the country that we are allowed to be at the moment. I am confident that with the support of our friends in Europe, Scotland will again take its place around the European table, where we belong.
This EU commitment is paramount before an independence vote
I've shared this with 20 friends who are either EU nationals living in Scotland or friends living in the EU - hoping they'll sign and keep sharing 😊
Thank you so much, we really appreciate your help in spreading the word about our campaign!
@@europeforscotland You're welcome ('S e do bheatha!) Apart from the DMs, I've also shared to my FB page and Twitter, having 'met' Bob Hastings - ambassador in Spain - on a Zoom call this evening. BTW there were 100 indy supporters on that call... Good move by Bob!

Eccelente! 👍
This Lady speaks the truth 🙏🏼
Terrible what happened to you in this undemocratic Brexit-process!
It seems that you also understand the real value of the EU, as opposed to remainers cq rejoiners who just speak of the economic profit of rejoining.
Over here we see the Scots as victims of a corrupt system and there’s a lot of goodwill. A ferry from Edingburgh to Eemshaven would connect Scotland directly to mainland Europe and attract a lot of environment friendly tourism to Scotland from especially Germany and the Netherlands.
Corrupt system😂😂 the snp are rotten to the core .Now we have a muslim in charge who says there are too many white people in charge . You can stick the eu where the sun don't shine 😂😂
Fantastic
Brilliant, with the exceptions of having to see the likes of Farage, Bunter et al.
Petition signed, but may I ask a favour? Being Welsh, but having lived in England for 90% of my lifetime, I need a new home* - I hope an independent Scotland would welcome me?
*The more observant among you might also have noticed that I also need a new surname...
Whilst we absolutely encourage our Scottish friend to remain welcoming also in the future, we would suggest that rather than changing surname you might just want to change prime minister, either by a change of person or substituting "prime" with "first" :)
How come the Welsh aren't wanting independence??
Like the video - but just one small point to correct. Scotland didn't "enter the union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1707" - Ireland didn't join until 1801.
Thank you so much for pointing that out, and sorry about the mistake!
@@europeforscotland No problem - was just worried that, when shared across social media sites, the so-called fact checkers would pick up on it. Too late to change it though.
Ireland never joined by its free will and volition. The native Irish had no vote. or say. Only English colonists/Plantationists could vote.
@@joemacdonnagh6750 neither did the native Scots if it comes to that.
@@kenj9181 I thought you had a referendum, the Irish had to fight , many of our people died in the struggle , but we now we are free of the British .
Great and very moving video. But where can I find the petition?
Dear Caroline, here it is: actionnetwork.org/petitions/welcome-scotland-back-in-the-eu/

Dear EU I would Grateful if you Could Send Scotland an Applation form to join the EU this year, We want to be part of the United states of Europe.xx
Hope you aren't going to fill it in 😂😂 it's an application form😂😂
No we don't bus shut the borders

❤️Brexit
Scotland did not vote for independence in 2014.
Independence for Scotland was quite viable.
Independent scotland in the EU is a non stater.
To protect the single market there would have to be a border with England with customs checks and passport controls.
That is just never going to happen.
I'm afraid Scotland blew its chance. It won't get another.
Sad nonsense.
@@gloin10 capital flight EU not interested. Rest of UK puts borders up loss of 60% exports to rest of uk. No oil at its own by the corporates
