Brexit: adds non-tariff barriers to trade such as paperwork, the impossibility of selling bivalve mollusks to the EU without undergoing a purification process, sees the UK lose access to Norway's waters where a lot of cod was fished. UK fishermen: Nah Brexit is fine, the problem is we didn't get bigger quotas, that's where we were betrayed! Non-Brexiteers: *collective facepalm*

I live in NE Scotland. For these fishermen and Brexit it was all about greed, nothing more, nothing less. Conned into believing the lies told by Tory ministers would come true so they would be richer than they already are. ( they were doing very well before Brexit. ) I have very little sympathy for them, especially when I know their mindset. The first commentator is Jimmy Buchan, a Tory councillor. He believed his masters. Now he wants the tax payer to bail them out.
lol talking about increasing the quota at the beginning of the video when they've not even been able to sell their current fish. You cut yourself of your biggest markets and thought you will be able to trade like you are still a member. I have no pity for you
The continuing interest of Europeans for Brexit is because of their fascination at watching an entire nation lay waste to its economy and destroy itself, and led by Dominic Lawson, who by the way lives in France. It really is the most wonderful entertainment.
@Diarmaid O'Riordan It's not the EU that strips the UK (funny you write England not UK) of its services industry it's Brexit that does it. The EU is a club which protects its members and fights for its members, the UK is not a member anymore and therefor treated as everybody else outside of the club. Most of the laws and regulations now applying for the UK where implemented and some even proposed by the UK when it was a member (the rules regarding the import of shellfish is a good example of a regulations the UK was huge in favour of when it was a member, now it shoots them in the foot). The EU has offered the UK solutions even regarding the service industry but all was denied due to the UK's red lines as it would have required free movement of services, good and (now the red line) people, which the UK denied. The UK has a FT regarding fish for example the only thing the fishermen did not get was a massive increase of their quotas but all of that does not help as they are now not a member of the single market anymore and have to do the paperwork that did not exist when they where in the EU. There is nothing outside of re-joining the customs union or the single market that would get rid of the red tape again. Something the current UK government does not want. In short it's all just self harm.
@Diarmaid O'Riordan Irish? Love your country lived there for 4 years And yes, the Banks and insurance firms want to trade with the EU as the UK did not negotiate any deal for them (the want to deregulate and create a finance/tax haven) so they need to find replacement for London. Can only be good for Ireland in many ways. If it becomes the new financial trade hub in the EU its power grows and if it is just one of the new financial trade hubs in the EU it still becomes more powerful/influencial! Ireland has become much more independent from trade with the UK after joining the EU it was 80% of Irelands trade in the 80th and if I remember right only 18% back in 2018. But I would not sign any document with this numbers they are only just out of my head from what I think I remember.
@Diarmaid O'Riordan yeah the trade will still exists momentarily even without most of the red tape the UK suffers as it has not implemented much of the needed customs checks yet. But yeah in the future it will be a pain in the ass like it already is for the British. I still think Ireland will benefit from bexit as now biggest English speaking country in the EU. US investors might more likely to go to Ireland than to any other country in the EU due to the language! Dublin got the biggest gain in financial corporations "moving out" of the UK into the EU followed by Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam
@Diarmaid O'Riordan Housing was already a problem (at least in Cork and surrounding areas) back in 2008. coming from 300€ for a 2 bedroom apartment to 1200 in Cork was quite a shock. prices got a bit better after the crisis hit Ireland. but I can imagine prices have eploded in Dublin now
@Diarmaid O'Riordan Yeah, all the countries thinking borrowing and selling houses to up prices indefinitely got hit hard, problem is they've already created a new housing bubble in the US. Hope we Europeans have learned from 2008
They complain that Bozo's deal was a bad one because they haven't got the quota increases they were promised, but what's the point of catching more fish if you can't sell it? It's not about more fish, it's about the pre-existing regulations that the UK, as EU members, helped to draw up! If you're a third country you have to expect to be treated as one. 'I remain optimistic', is merely a euphemism for I'm a stupid twat, but a refuse to admit it. His mate must get so frustrated arguing with him!
The problem with Brits and Brexit is that this is the second or third generation which completely does not understand what means to be a THIRD COUNTRY. I do not blame them, as they have no benchmark, no reference point to compare to. Many privileges they had enjoyed while being in the EU they took for granted and eternal.
They have 50 years to learn about there mistake for voting Brexit , after that they might be allowed back to the eu , or would it take longer to sink in .
I hope that the fishing (and other) industry realizes that the initiative to change this situation also should come from those affected. Unite, inform yourselves, spread the word, hold those who made false promises to account…. All the interviews sound quite passive (the government did this, Boris Johnson told that). Fishermen and their families are losing their jobs and businesses. Hold those who lied to account, inform yourselves and vote for change !
What these people don't understand is the simple difference between being an EU member and just a 3rd country. As a 3rd country you may have full control over your fishing grounds but does that matter if you cannot sell or export the fish you catch? The current situation was caused by an utter failure of understanding the actual rules and regulations governing trade being a member of EU compared to not being an EU member.
so the processors are setting up office in the EU to make things easier. So let me understand this, Brexit is causing British businesses to create(shift) more jobs and economic activity in the EU
To quote from "Braveheart": "You weren't deceived. You allowed yourselves to be deceived". No sympathy for gullible saps who believe life-long, habitual and proven liars. Move your business to the EU, or accept responsibility and losses. And maybe vote for Leave again, this time in Indy2Ref. Might take a few years before Scotland manages to (re)join the EU Single Market (at least), though.
They vote for it not EU . But EU control there own market and in business customers rules . Well independent Scotland hope rejoin and all Brexit nightmare comes to end in Scotland . Scotexit soon .
It wasn't hard to work out that that about 70-80 % of UK fisheries exports to the EU were potentially at risk with brexit by putting any barriers in the way of your markets with one of the bosses having to open a place in France to get around the problems, so that means the French have gained jobs probably at the expense of British jobs. As regards the one who's optimistic I wonder how he is now with the latest calamitous deal with Norway his fellow brexiteers in government have made a mess of.
Absolutely serves them right. Theirs was a deliberate choice to knowingly accept an obvious lie. Everyone, Europe and the UK, has suffered from the idiocy that was Brexit.
And the fishing industry could not predict that if the waters had not been shared to some degree with the EU, that punitive tariffs would not have been served on fish exporters, that would have had an even more devastating effect on the British fishing sector. The attitude from the EU would have been “if you want to keep your waters, then keep your fish”!
6:20 "Complex and time-consuming systems" barriers which were put in place mostly by Britain while in EU, to keep countries outside EU from competing... It went full circle I guess
You forgot you had to sell the fish ? Well Jimmy Buchan how is your Tory Brexit going ? It's not about the deal . We are a 3rd country ! Did you not see this coming ? I did and lot's and lot's of people were warning you ,but arrogance got in the way !
Why is Jimmy even appearing in this documentary? And why is he not being properly questioned as to just how Brexit was ever going to be good for the U.K. fishing industry. It was always obvious that it was going to be disastrous.
This is the logical outcome of Brexit. The U.K. does not eat most of the fish in its own warming fisheries = have to export. E.g. in 2019 U.K. fishers landed 3x more mackerel or 1.5x mass herring than the combined weight of all Cod and Haddock. The U.K.'s own consumers demand fish that now mostly are moving further and further north, out of the U.K. fisheries (ie COD). So when deintegrating from the EU fishery arrangements, there is simply no logical upside. From both perspectives, the U.K. fisheries are in the weaker bargaining position. The alternative is to change the U.K.'s tastebuds, good luck with that.
Hard to empathise for someone who caused a self inflicted wound, particularly when they were repeatedly warned not to...the lesson isn't Brexit, the lesson is make informed decisions in your life and don't trust salesmen to have your best interest at heart (oops I mean politicians). With that said I don't relish in someone's suffering and hope it gets better for these blokes
Nobody wants to recognize that they were wrong voting for Brexit. They will always defend that the problem was the deal they got/the implementation. The question that nobody had a clue on how it would be implemented… they all painted a rosy picture that is not feasible 😞😞
"Those with the deepest pockets will own the industry" - And those are the ones that donate to the Tories. It was never about how much fish you could catch, it was about how much fish you could sell. And to sell you need a market. The EU is the biggest single market on the planet, and the closest to the UK. You were warned about this, but chose to believe the known liars like Johnson and Farrage over the experts.
Take back control of waters with fish not wanted by UK consumers. Become a third country with respect to the EU which is the market for what they catch. We might forgive the fishermen for believing BOJO but where were their representative organisations in all this? Surely they understood to consequences of Brexit or did they not bother checking it out? Seems to me there was laziness all round here and they get what they deserve.
The UK allocates only 4% of its quota to these fishermen. The rest is given to a handful rich list families. They asked M. Gove to give them more. He said no, and they blamed the EU instead. But the fish are happy.
Sad to see the sorry state of affairs of the fishing industry in Scotland. But yet 90% of the fishing faternity voted to pull out of Brexit. However now that post Brexit is official the post Brexit exit the fishing industry has taken a big lost & struggling to survive. In the long run Brexit looks like a failure for the fishing industry.
Ask yourself this, Fisherman, did I vote for Brexit ? if your answer is yes then you are one hundred percent responsible for the position you find yourself in.
It’s not a bad deal. It’s is the deal by leaving the EU and the customs Union and single market. That is the deal, their was no other outcome from the deal. It’s called 3rd country statues. The stupidity is mind boggling
Let's be clear. These fishermen tried to screw their EU colleagues by taking back control of their waters. This itself was a selfish act. The fact that a moron could see that they needed a market for their produce from their waters. Were they really that naive. The confidence on show should be seen as continued ignorance not real hope based on factual analysis of their position. The fact their selfishness has brought them to this point really makes it difficult for me to have sympathy for them. The coal miners had there industry ripped from them. These people have their industry away
Turkeys voting for Christmas. The fishers were told that there were no sun lit uplands or waves in their case. They dismissed the Remainers and shouted Project Fear. I guess the fish are happier as they can now live for longer.
90% of fishermen voted to make themselves unemployed when they voted for brexit. Who did they think was going to buy the fish? When you divorce your wife , don't complain when she stops cooking and cleaning for you.
1 Sells of own fish quotas to foreign owned vessels registered in Britain. 2 Gets kicked out of the places where they like to fish. 3 Wonders why no fish are landing in British harbors. ...
I know the huge challenges of scotland being independent but every time I hear anything to do with Brexit it makes me angry and I have no faith in Brexit Britain to make thing better than before. It seems like an over focus on quota not on where how and where the extra fish might be sold?
A) I have never understand the fetishisation of the fishing sector in the Brixit idiocy. Harrod's, ON ITS OWN, is more important for the UK's economy.... B) A large proportion of the UK's EU fishing quotas were sold to fishermen and/or companies based in the EU. The UK was the ONLY country which made its quotas tradeable... There's a whole stinking can of worms there in terms of contract and property rights... C) The UK IMPORTS around 70% of the limited range of species that its people will actually eat. D) The UK's fishing sector MUST export around 70% of the fish it catches, because the British people will NOT eat them. Prior to Brixit, nearly all the UK's fish exports went to the EU... E) Leaving the EU AUTOMATICALLY made it far more difficult, and far more expensive, for British fish to be exported there. F) And the icing on the cake is the UK's catastrophic screwup with its 'negotiations' with Norway. The British government is slowly, very slowly, beginning to understand that going around the world barking "Don't you know who we are?" and "We're BRITISH, damn it!" does NOT actually work when it comes to getting market and resource access... To sum up; as a result off Brixit and the Norwegian cockup, a marginal sector of the UK's economy is rapidly running out of places to fish, and places to sell fish...
UK fishing can only survive if it’s inner market grows. The EU market will dwindle and then disappear, for one reason alone, cost. It takes time to build new partners and for contracts to end, and once those periods pass,, then the EU will buy its fish from cheaper sources. So, these fishermen can fight (struggle is a better word) all they want, but if they don’t find a market for their goods, then their business is dead.
In other words, they're fucked. Great Britain is all sorts of things but not a nation of fish eaters - they have never been. Without the EU market they are lost. with all the regulations and tariffs they have no chance to compete.
So. I'm absolutely no Brexit expert. But would no-deal actually be better for the fishermen than what they have now? Mr. Jimmy seems to imply that... Can someone tell me?
no deal would mean that you are not allowed to sell anything in the EU. The food sector within the EU is subject to strict regulations, the quality and quantity of the products that can be imported are clearly regulated. Without a deal, all goods from this area would be intercepted and confiscated at customs. As a small example, if you cross the EU border from a third country without a corresponding agreement and have a few sandwiches with you as travel provisions, they will be confiscated and disposed of at customs, cause you are not allowed to import this goods. That´s not a joke, there is even a video on UA-cam where you can see this happen to a brit crossing the border to the Netherlands.
If you wanted a better quota you should have asked for a better quota, You voted for Brexit that apparrantly is not the same as a better quota. If you think you were disceived, do something about it or bear the consequences.
The Captain summed it up wen he said he was a fisherman, his father was, his grandfather was. So said U.K. car makers, miners, ship builders, steelworkers, engineering workers and a host of other uk workers whose industry was destroyed by the tories.

@Zockblatt Shickleblender ok zuckie shuttlebot TROLL. joined april 9th just to push the brexit myth well trolls you cant dish out this drivel forever it will come crashing down shortly you'd bettet seek oyher employment , customs agent perhaps
What is even more surprising is the fact that 13 million did not bother to vote and another 700k Brits living/working in the EU were not given the opportunity to have their say.
Apparently, the British e̶x̶-̶p̶a̶t̶s̶ immigrants in Spain had one and voted for Brexit. 90 days (after Brexit) the ones that assumed that they were a special case and refused to apply for residency, or didn't qualify, were kindly asked to leave by the Spanish.
So they trusted Boris Johnson, to which you can only say "well there is your problem"!
:( Best wishes from Norway to the Scottish people
If they are not fishermen, yes.
TACK .
worst wishes frm me.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ok you voted for brexit,. Good, welcome to brexit Sir 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Completely morons!
Trade with the world - compete with the world.
Hope they print a big Union Jack on their products, so I won’t need glasses to read what not to buy.
If it's got a Jack , put it back 👎
"We did well" Buchan quote.
You can catch them, you can land them, you can't get rid of them. Sorry Crews, Dockhands, Auctioneers, Hauliers, Customers, IT'S NOT MY FAULT! But if it's any conciliation, I'M ALRIGHT, still got my house and money in the bank..
that fisherman was wrong, it is a sea of opportunity.. just not for regural uk citizen..
I live in NE Scotland.
For these fishermen and Brexit it was all about greed, nothing more, nothing less.
Conned into believing the lies told by Tory ministers would come true so they would be richer than they already are.
( they were doing very well before Brexit. )
I have very little sympathy for them, especially when I know their mindset.
I have no pity for you
Hey Scotlan, come back to EU :-D? We would welcome you with open arms :-).
you and who? 🤣🤣🤣 let them rot
The continuing interest of Europeans for Brexit is because of their fascination at watching an entire nation lay waste to its economy and destroy itself, and led by Dominic Lawson, who by the way lives in France. It really is the most wonderful entertainment.
This is the Norway
Mimus minus deal.
Love your country lived there for 4 years
And yes, the Banks and insurance firms want to trade with the EU as the UK did not negotiate any deal for them (the want to deregulate and create a finance/tax haven) so they need to find replacement for London.
Hope we Europeans have learned from 2008
One word (Greed)
Sums it up. Greed motivated them and they bought a pack of lies as a result
A solution : with control of all UK waters, catch all the fish and keep it. EU has no obligation to let it in tariff free.
What did these Fishermen vote? that's right they voted for Brexit and the Tories now they are paying the price! They can't say they weren't warned.
Buchan you knew from the outset this was wrong! Did you use the same decorator as Bojo?
Yeah… don’t hold the fishermen responsible for this at all… it’s not like they have been over fishing for decades or anything….
Wellcome to the Brexit 🙄i’m sure the Dutch customs officer did know irony 😂😂
As a Dutchman myself, i can certainly can confirm that! They should make a ringtone out of it!
thats okay as long as bojo is well pleased with his new decorated flat thank you tory party
The UK after post Brexit became another foreign country to the eyes of the EU, so business as usual.
Ad to this the Norway failure .....
so the processors are setting up office in the EU to make things easier.
Well now you need to get the next referendum right.
Indiref 2 vote to leave the UK.
Realign with Europe and come back in from the cold.
9:35…..we all integrated in the fishing industry…so we voted out of our biggest market. The EU.
Shit happens. You got what you voted for. Greetings from Europe
You can have all the water!!! But ... We, in the EU, are the people that buy that fish and tell you to go sell it somewhere else now.
HOWs jimmy Buchan and Kevin getting on selling their 'PRANS' !! REAP FIT YI SOW JIMMY !! ✊🏻🏴🏴
6:20 "Complex and time-consuming systems" barriers which were put in place mostly by Britain while in EU, to keep countries outside EU from competing... It went full circle I guess
Welcome to the Brexit, sir !
what is the use of unlimited fishing quota if you dont have the market to sell into? Have these ppl got their secondary education properly?
You got to point of brexit: "those with the deepest pockets will control the industry"
Time to get out of the UK and join EU as Scotland.
Freedom to Scotland, join EU and go back to fishing again!
Whit ?
They actually listened to actual Tories ?
And actually BELIEVED them ? ?
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaàaaaaaaaaaaaw !
Thank you for your comment
A year later and it is worse... sorry guys you were taken for a ride!
Not heard from Jimmy for a while is he ok ? Or is he trying to frame brexit mess as sturgeon's fault ?
Why are all those in the UK fishing industry whining?
All rules that now apply, were already known before 2016.
You won, get over it!
no sympathy they thought only about themselves and no one else!
English answer: happy fish !
UK will never join back the EU. Scotland and NI maybe. We love you
Turkeys voting for Christmas.
When you divorce your wife , don't complain when she stops cooking and cleaning for you.
it will get even worse after EU producers grab market shares from UK fishmen
1 Sells of own fish quotas to foreign owned vessels registered in Britain.
2 Gets kicked out of the places where they like to fish.
3 Wonders why no fish are landing in British harbors.
...
I know the huge challenges of scotland being independent but every time I hear anything to do with Brexit it makes me angry and I have no faith in Brexit Britain to make thing better than before.
It seems like an over focus on quota not on where how and where the extra fish might be sold?
Never EVER trust any tory!
Get used to it Brits, from now on it goes downhill
This must be what Nigel Farage was talking about? Huge success
You fishermen can always bake cakes,...there is a great demand for it after Brexit, so I've heard.
Still waiting for the sunny uplands!
The fishermen were greedy and are now paying the price lol
They need to beeeelieeeve more and sell their fish to Australia !
Don't worry. You don't have to think about how to sell your fish if you don't get fuel for your vessels ;)
My dad was a fisherman my grandad was a fisherman how did manage to produce idiots
it is not covid that is lowering the demand, exporting is more difficult now which means extra costs and lower income !
I am a recovering heroin addict who is over 20 years clean. I had the pleasure (sic) of coming down from withdrawal of 240 mils of methadone. I was praying for God to take me, I felt that bad. After a lengthy period of time being on the program I am down to 30 mils working my way off methadone. I will then be drug and alcohol free for the first time since I was 13 years old. I am 67yrs now!
