    "Enland was joined with Wales in 1536". What you mean is that Wales was unilaterally annexed by England's parliament under HenryVIII after having been conquered in 1282 and subsequently brutally subjugated, the latter having been expunged from the historical record. After annexation Wales has been exploited; legal and administrative steps taken in London to destroy the Welsh language. Now Wales is neglected and left to rot by successive Westminster governments, Tory & Labour. If Wales doesn't vote for independence it faces continued neglect and decline. There is no other alternative other than independence of Westminster.

      They did grant them their independence because Ireland was simply just a net loss.
      When Michael Collins came across the sea to negotiate a deal he was threatened with a land invasion of several hundred thousand men (who were all battle hardened from WW1) to restore order in Ireland if he didnt accept the deal, and he saw the deal as a stepping stone to further Irish independence (Ireland was a commonwealth nation at that point)

    Irish unification is a logical outcome. Scottish independence, too. The EU will welcome Scotland as a full member. No worries 🇪🇺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    • @TheThundertaker
      @TheThundertaker Рік тому

      No it won't. The EU already has major problems supporting its weaker members and Scotland has a deficit in double figures that well exceeds that 3% level required for new members. The mandatory requirment to sign up to Schengen also creates a huge issue (which is why Ireland prioritises the CTA over joining Schengen). In addition, Scotland does over 60% of its trade with the rUK and about 20% with the EU. In summary, it makes little economic sense for Scotland to leave the UK in order to join the EU, it would be an extreme act of economic self-harm. But it wouldn't happen, even if Scotland did become 'independent' the problems in joining the EU would be insurmountable and the idea would, at best be kicked down the road indefinitely. The SNP are leading disappointed remainers up the garden path by telling them that independence is the road to rejoining the EU, it just wouldn't happen, and the more the UK diverges from the EU and signs up to external trade deals that lead to lower or zero tarrif trade with the rest of the world the less sense it makes.
      In summary, Scotland is not going to be rejoining the EU, unless it is as part of the UK, which is in itself highly unlikely considering the unpalatable terms the EU would demand for that to happen.

But the UN does encourage internal self determination .... but not external self determination without consent of the parent state. People misunderstand the principal of self determination when it comes to that context... and they wrongly think it applies to all situations. There are two types of self determination... external and internal. External can only be sought with the parent states permission ... internal means some local autonomy such as devolution. The only time external can be sought independently of the parent states will is if people are suffering / dying at the hands of the parent state. Then the UN security council gets involved. I dont think anyone would argue Scotland is in that situation.

    A very important detail is that during the Scottish independence referendum in 2014, one of the big remainers' argument was "if you leave the UK, you'll also going to loose EU benefits, and you don't want that to happen". So yeah Brexit is seen by many Scots as a betrayal of the 2014 referendum or at the very least a valid reason to redo the referendum since the situation has changed dramatically.

    • @HaiLsKuNkY
      @HaiLsKuNkY 3 роки тому +20

      no because the Brexit referendum was always on the cards because in 2014 UKIP got the most votes in the EU referendum, so David Cameron said he would hold a referendum on EU membership if he got elected in 2015.. which is why the SNP put the clause on its manifesto that they would hold another referendum with material constitutional change. they should have waited until after Brexit to call for a referendum.

      Exactly. The casus of Czechoslovakia is the most valid for all arguments for and against the split of Scotland and England.
      However, after the split, both countries of former Czechoslovakia get access to a larger market and Union with the EU. Here we have one part of Union - England and Wales - which voted for brexit and the second part - Scotland (and N.Ireland) - which wanted to stay in the EU.
      The problem with Scotland is - when they had referendum, England told them they would bar them from access to EU. After the Brexit, Scotland wanting to join EU will have to sort their border with England. To have a physical border with your biggest market is a pain and recipe for an economical downturn. It can be done, it is not impossible, but it is a pain - just look at the position of post communist countries after 1989, the USRR was their biggest market and it took years for them to realign with other markets.
      Practically, after leaving the UK, Scotland will be bound to stay with them with little chance to get access to large EU market.
      If they want to think themselves as a new Denmark or Slovakia - they have similar size of population - to do so, they will need to sever their close links with England. I don't think there is enough will to do so in Scotland.

      I fully agree, even in the replies to this comment people have diminished wales. Wales is very much distinct from England. Welsh is the most commonly spoken of the Celtic languages, we have a rich history. Our historic figures just aren’t taught as much, and aren’t as big a part of pop culture. Owning glyndwr, the last prince of wales, fought fiercely for wales. The legend of King Arthur is a welsh one, despite what the bbc want you to think. The welsh people are the oldest inhabitants of Britain. To act like there isn’t a divide between the English and the Welsh is ignorant. The welsh independence movement is also growing exponentially. Until just over a century ago most of wales was still welsh speaking, and English tourists needed translation books to be able to visit most areas. Just because England has done better at silencing us, partly by beating children who spoke welsh until they spoke English, partly by taking all our resources without paying us for them, and many other things, that doesn’t mean we aren’t still here. ‘Yea o hyd’

    This sort of situation has happened so many times in so many smaller and less powerful countries around the world. History shows that when a country truly wants independence from the English crown, they tend to get it one way or another. I'm just glad that for now things are being handled with some modicum of civility and not outward violence. Scotland really has to consider all the factors before jumping into independence. Take a hard look at how small, oil-rich nations do when the chains of an empire are taken off. Lots of countries think vast oil reserves equals the ability to just import everything they need but when the meet literally any barrier to those imports the country falls into chaos. Iraq, Venezuela, heck even Russia suffers from over-reliance on imports just because they struggle to diversify their economy enough. Scotland has other natural resources, and it's infrastructure needs are different given it's relatively lower population, but it will inevitably need to work out some kind of partnership with the UK in the interest of defense, finance, agriculture and anything else Scotland needs but does not naturally posses. The rest of the UK, will of course conversely be forced to pay for a lot of basic needs it naturally gets from Scotland, like said oil, but also it's water and many other specialty goods. Regardless of what they call themselves or what they consider themselves Scotland and England can't survive without each other.

    I have supported Scottish independence all my life and I still do. i joined the SNP when I was a schoolboy of 14 or 15 and couldn't wait to get started working for independence.
    As time went on, I became increasingly disillusioned by the approach the SNP was taking. To my mind the task was independence and the restoration of our national sovereignty. All the other issues should be left until after that was achieved. The SNP on the other hand was generating a host of policies that could not be implemented until after independence and some of which alienated independence supporters. The most damaging of these policies precluded using general elections to attain independence. Only referenda could be used. That viewpoint was and still is ridiculous. There is no constitutional block in the UK to using a general election to settle any matter whatsoever. A clear majority gives any party the right to rule and implement policies that many people do not agree with. Tory and Labour governments have both done so and done so with less that half of the electorate. Neither of these parties support proportional representation either. I noticed recently that Sunak and Starmer were in agreement in making the bogus claim that a general election could not settle the independence issue.
    When the SNP return to the policy of using the next general election as the springboard to independence I will happily support them again. Sadly I can see no sign of a clear concensus gathering behind that position and Alba seem no better.
