I just realized this. John idolized this guys since he was a kid. He listened to them all day long. He grew and actually played with his idols. It is very sad that Stevie isn't here to play with them also.
John Mayer is grossly underrated among the Blues community and that's really sad to see. John is an amazing musician, and is very skilled with the guitar.
He's blues influenced but not a bluesman. I actually hear lots of positive things about John from the blues community, but there's nothing surprising about blues purists or semi-purists not accepting someone into their circle that has never released a single blues album.
Relyks I wouldn't call the John Mayer Trio blues exactly. More blues influenced than any other work his done. Also the blues communities King.. BB to be exact.. welcomed him all the time. Buddy Guy as well. Eric Clapton who is not exactly blues but.. has at least put out a blues album has called him a master guitarist.
As John said about Stevie, "When youre really in the zone and everything comes together, you can play like Stevie...for about 10 seconds, then your hand cramps up."
People, grow up. For those who actually have extensively listened to this and the original Empty Arms, it is obvious that it is a take on it, and a quite good one, might I add. People need to quit comparing Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Mayer. He is paying tribute to one of the greatest guitarists in the world. This is an honor, not a guitar slinging contest. If Stevie saw this comment thread, he would be appalled at what you all are saying. Enough said.
SRV would dig it I hope. No one can do what he did, but he was humble and always self-effacing. Most of America wouldn't know Buddy Guy in the 21st Century if not for SRV and I'm going to see the wonderful 82 year old BG in two nights. THAT is a legacy. And the world keeps spinning...
Crazy how everyone is used to seeing Stevie where john is in on the stage playing with double trouble… makes me miss Stevie even more because he’s the one who opened up my musical taste and allowed me to progress further in my guitar skill… rip the legend of Stevie ray vaughan, your music will live on forever
John Mayer did an excellent job on this, there is too many people criticising him here, someone mentioned his guitar being not loud enough, that comment tells me that commenter hasn’t got a clue about playing . The difference between Mayer’s version and SRV’s version is that John’s guitar tone is cleaner than Stevie’s, less distortion than Stevie’s, that’s what you’re all hearing. For me, it’s as good a cover as you ever hear and I’m sure DT would agree.
John Mayer is a true artist and musician who sounds great. He is a guy who has worked hard to get to the level he is at. People who whine about his performances are probably just jealous.
This is awesome. When they start the song though you can see in the rhythm section guys' faces that they wish it was Stevie starting that lick. I bet they miss him tons. Thanks for keeping it alive, John!
That was better then expected back from the future in 01/21. I remember my subscription of Guitar Players Magazine with John Mayer on the cover with a replica SRV Guitar..... I ripped the cover off my new favorite magazine , cause at that time JMayer was an Obnoxious Person , purcieved by my gathering of material at that time.... After his first ,Eric Clapton Cross Roads Festival ,John became way more Down to Earth and started becoming a much better guitar player. And continues to be a great guitar player..... I see Double Trouble , and I miss SRV for them and myself.
I'd like to see him do this track again. This performance was from about 10 years ago, and his gear/tone/skill has surpassed what can be seen in this video by miles since then.
May not be a Stevie RayVaughan but he knows what he's doing and real good blues voice/guitarist Stevie would diffidently be proud of him. A true musician would know John Myer is good. "a true musician"
You gotta love how tommy looks like he's just having a wonderful time playing this song with Chris and John..you also have to note how Chris is Just hitting then drums harder and harder, I think he loved it as well...☺️☺️...John did an awesome job on this track.....👍🎸🎸👍👍❤️❤️❤️
John Mayer video? Check. Anonymous "musicians" talking about how he sucks? Check. Comments about how he isn't SRV even though he never claimed to be? Check. Okay. Good. All is still normal in the world of UA-cam.
Exactly. He's never done anything but to claim that there have been few guitarists in history who were capable of playing with the ferocity and intensity that SRV did for more than a minute or two while Vaughan did it for entire sets.
WHOA ! That's Good !!! He was only 33 so he wasn't incredibly young cause Stevie was 35 when he passed but John is like the W.B. Frog ! No Frills but just astoundingly talented !!
get off your high horse and make-way for the next generation of greats and legends. Sick and tired of everyone living in the past. Most of your generations legends that I've always looked up to are either dying, dead or very old. And I mean that with the up-most respect! I'm 20 now, in 30 years time I don't want to be left with the 'memories' and 'stories' of legends, I want the torch to be handed down and I want it to be carried on forever, stop hogging it and appreciate these amazing artists!
John mayer is our eras Stevie Ray Vaughan. If you really look at his technique, precision, and accuracy when hitting notes, he is unmatched by any guitarist past present or future. It’s almost like he does srv better than srv does srv.
John Mayer is our generations Stevie. But they do completely separate things. No one does SRV better than SRV. And no one does John Mayer Better than John Mayer. There are plenty of guitar players that do things better than John Mayer; there are plenty that do worse. It is stupid to compare them as you do.
@@spyr5390 Sure, if your definition of exact is playing the guitar or the blues, then you are correct. They are both incredibly great guitar players and musicians, but to say they do the exact same thing is insult to both of them. John is a huge disciple of SRV, he grew up listening to him. But he has a completely different feel than him. They both sound drastically different. You could make the argument that John was in a SRV/Pearl Jam tribute band in high school, but that's the closest he came trying to be exactly like Stevie. Me, in my opinion, feel it is stupid to compare guitarists to see who is better. And also saying two guitarists are exactly alike. I'm not sure why you do it. But that's my two cents.
The great thing about Stevie was that he elevated the art of guitar playing just like Hendrix before him. Each took it to the next level and thanks to him we have some exciting young guitar players starting to come up
Stevie used heavier strings and a hot rodded amp setup to get his sound.. John has his own sound. I wish people would stop comparing them.. Theyre both great.. And johns tone has got a lot better in recent years.. This video is about 10 or 11 years old... Or older perhaps judging from how the picture looks at the beginning.
That is a great room. I was first introduced to it at Freshman Orientation in 1983 at the University of Texas at Austin. Nice to see John Mayer step into SRV shoes.
It’s so cool john got to fulfill his dream of playing with double trouble at such a young age. Sad he never got to play with his hero Stevie but this is still so cool.
If John were just a blues artist, he'd be starving in some dive bar in Texas playing for $10 a night. Im so glad he chose light pop as his trade. That's his bread and butter not a cheap imitation of SRV. John is awesome. Keep writing those great pop hooks man.
John Mayer covering one my favorite songs of all time!! Wonderful to know that there's still relevant artists out there with real inspiration. ALL HAIL STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN BABY!!! I'm gonna be 18 soon and here's to hoping more music like this comes around to my generation.
Always has blown my mind at just how much Johns singing sounds like SRV. If you close your eyes & envision Stevie singing it’s pretty damn cool fo sure
SRVs guitar playing is best but John's voice is more appealing. It's sad he couldn't play with his idol like SRV played with Albert. May they rest in peace
Not only an amazingly talented musician, but very eloquent from the clips I've seen. Clearly well respected by his fellow musicians and if EC likes him, that's ok with me
He has the right to play what he wants. And thanks to his popularity, he's done far more for the blues than many recent bluesmen who only play the blues.

Jacob Agee Clesrly never head of Philip Sayce, have you

Bro look up Kingfish Ingram
Cade Lev Kingfish plays way more like EJ than SRV.
Listen to Kenny Wayne Shepherd as well. Not to take away John's talent though. 😇
As Clapton said about John: « I don’t think he realizes it, but he’s a master »
I hate that quote. It makes it sound like he wouldn’t be able to get respect without that. But he’s great on his own
He doesnt know how good he is
Oh. I’m positive John realizes it.
Idk but it seems to me john is one of the most self-confident musicians out there - and i dont mean that in a bad way ;)

No idea how I havent seen this before, Mayer really kills the SRV strum. Awesome performance.
