One of the pioneers of the telecaster sound, he was noted for his use of note bending, volume swells, staccato runs and "pinch" harmonics. He is considered by many to be one of America's most soulful guitar masters, and even 20 years after his death, he maintains an army of devoted fans, including some of rock guitar's greatest (just ask Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson or Billy Gibbons). This performance, captured on the ACL stage on November 15, 1976, shows Roy Buchanan in his prime at the age of 37. Indeed, it may well be the best high-quality audio/video recording of his complete performance known to exist.
The guy is just calmly standing there killing it! Roy Buchanan and Rory Gallagher are two of the greatest blues players who never became household names.
So laid back. If you see just him without listening to him playing, it's incomprehensible that all this beauty, interpretation, and execution is even happening.

Without a single pedal. Buchanan was on another planet in terms of mastering the tone marriage of his guitar and amp(s). Unbelievable ability! Never will be anyone like him.

I just use a standard boss katana I'll use a tube screamer or my Morley pedal sometimes but I try to have not too many smoke and mirrors. plus I got to work on playing clean @GlennJimenez
Roy is the only axe man I known of that can tell you a story, sing you a song, break your heart and take you to church with just a few minutes and a Telecaster.

I saw him play live a few times in Denver, 1974 - 1976. The audience in the small club consisted largely of guitar players; who routinely had to pick their jaws off the floor.

We went over to Youngstown Ohio to the Agora Youngstown venue back in '75 or '76 when we were in HIGH school, and saw just what an incredible talent Roy Buchanan was. You talk about the man who could make his guitar cry. I tried to go back stage after the show and try to get a guitar pick from him but couldn't! When I went to find my buddies they left without me, but I didn't care ,I had just witnessed the greatest guitar player in the world. Wild Cherry was the other band. Guitar Prophet Mr.Roy Buchanan.I'm 65 now and blessed to see this performance on video

same with Bob Dylans Subterranean Homesick Blues some years earlier.....i did not know what the lyrics meant at the time, (non english speaker) but i felt as if i was on fire.

I saw Roy play at a bar in upstate New York when I was in college. The stage had a dancing pit just in front of it with stairs leading up to the tables. I stood on the stairs, only 20 feet from Roy and watched him play amazing guitar all night long.

Saw him live. Took my breath away. No gimmicks-- just pure genius--what a thrill. So direct--no bullshit---the purist guitarist I have ever seen.
Did you ever see Rory Gallagher? I'm too young to have seen any of the greats live (at least in their prime) but from my UA-cam watching experience Rory has unmatched energy and stage presence.

He was too busy playing his music vs playing the industry game.
Because the record companies wouldn't give him the artistic freedom. Little thick-headed of Roy maybe? But it speaks volumes about his character he was cruising down his own highway and no one was going to stop him.

Saw Roy play way back in the seventies in Adelaide, Australia. I'll never forget that concert, apart from the fact that it was my very first ever concert, Roy just blew that little back room at The Tivoli apart! It was just him, the bassist and drummer, but man it was a BIG sound! RIP Roy.
Roy achieved miracles. Just the man, his pick, the Telecaster, and the strings.
Roy was one of my favorite musicians. I saw him about 15 times. Even have him sign a Mets schedule from 1979. Still love Roys Bluz from Livestock more than any song.
The look of shock in the crowd at 2:40 is awesome. It's like they have been hypnotized by Roy.

Something very noticeable about Roy is the fact he had his fingers on fire while his body language was so cool and quiet! God knows how he could manage it. He was (and still) one of the best Telecaster heroes who pushed the limits of the instrument.
His base player once remarked to Roy "Man how can you rage like that but stand like a statue?" Roy replied "because I am raging on the inside."
That's the only way I could manage playing fast and well - had to keep the rest of my body still. No histrionics or showboating, just putting it all into the hands. Got teased a lot for being so boring to look at on stage. I daresay if I'd played a 10th as good as Roy, no one would'a said shite.

Roy was one of the best ever! I saw him in the early 70s and was just blown away and became an instant fan. His work noticed by Jeff Beck himself who placed him on the highest pedestal unfortunately never got out to the masses. One of the purely best of all time. There is an awful lot of his work out there to be discovered if anybody wants to find it.
Yeah Roy along with Rory Gallagher back when I was growing up in the early 70's this was going on and I missed out.

About 30 years ago I had a tenant skip out without paying me all his back rent. Among his meager belongings he had a small stack of vinyl lps. one of them was Roy's "Loading dock". to this day, I still look at that as a fair trade. I never got any of the money from him, but he did inadvertently introduce me to this amazing guitarist. :-)

Do you remember the venue? I saw Roy twice in the Phx area in the 70's. I believe one was at Big Surf.
Sadly there is no record of his AZ concerts anywhere online that I can find.
@@GorgeousRoddyChrome I don't. I haven't been to Phoenix much since then. It was actually a big nightclub in Scottsdale. I think it had a revolving stage in the center of the club. I don't know if that helps.

He’s most likely my favorite guitarist. Sure there are more technical guys, but Roy was channeling something from the depths. Just something so emotionally precise about his playing

Roy Buchanan was one of my favorite players when I was teaching myself guitar 50 years ago. This man was an incredible talent but he had some inner demons he just couldn’t tame.

Saw him a few days in a small Nashville venue before he left us. GENIUS!
There is an ominous quality to this song, and Roy, in his understated way, gives it room to breathe. Superb guitar work -- a real master. No stage antics. Just a small smile on his face, which comes and goes.
Thanks to some guy who mentioned Roy on Jeff Beck video I just discovered this gem. How the hell all this time I have been listening to rock music and never heard of him is beyond me. Well at least I get the pleasure to hearing some good songs for the first time
I'm glad you discovered him. Isn't he something else? Talk about tone in your fingers. Pedal free virtuosity. Don't get me wrong, I"m a bassist who loves pedals, a new obsession for me. Be the way, great name Mr. Beefheart. One of the most memorable shows I've ever seen was the Captain and his band way back in the mid to late Seventies. It was incredible. It was at San Diego State and filled with rabid Captain Beefheart fans. The band came out first playing some angular Tropical Hot Dog style tune, and when the Captain strolled out ever so cool, the place went mad with unhinged delight.
My discovery of Roy is today 1-22-2024 and I’m in disbelief that I never heard of him until now!!

Can’t stop listening to this the last few days. Always knew of Roy but lately just especially blown away at how much he really stands out

The first time I listened to this song was something of an other-worldly experience. I was sat at a beach by myself. Had packed up my camping gear for the day ready to move on. But I paused on my way. Sat down in the sand, looking out in the horizon this song came on. And for sure I was in a special mood already; when the track started I felt like I was there, in the room with the people on the recording. I heard people clapping and whispering beside me, the collective excitement being expressed and still building as Roy took the first tones. I felt tears rolling down my chins and I melted together with existence. I felt myself fully. All was possible but nothing I could do could add to the experience I was already having, it was utterly abundant. As he continued to play I felt like ocean waves of rainbows washed through my body. Showing me the beauty of the marriage of myself and the music as we danced. I bowed to the universe and felt my whole body starting to pulse with love from the deep. It was all ok. All ok. Symbols started to appear in front of my eyes, a triangle with the number 17 stuck out as the most important one. I didn’t know just what was happening but I tell you it felt good. Thank you Roy. Reading what I wrote I realise it’s not that far fetched to think I was on drugs, but I was completely sober amazingly enough.
My god you penned it perfectly and poetically! I in my own way feel that way today with this man! I had a similar experience that you described being near the ocean and discovering JJ Cale!! To this day I recall that day every time I listen to him!! Today I’m on my patio discovering Roy while I drink coffee with my mom and watching the rain come down ever so softly and melodically!! What a combination! Roy will forever take me back to this day with my mom long after she’s gone!❤

I am 58 years old, saw him twice on stage in Amsterdam 1985 and 1986. I am a fan since 1973, i was 14 years young at that time. Still got the originals lp´s from the early seventies

Roy Buchanan could really captivate his audience ... 2:36 is proof of that. When I was a young lad, I bought a few Roy Buchanan albums, and when my mother saw his face, she said what a nice looking man he was. My mother's name was the name that was given to Roy's Telecaster. An eerie feeling now that I think about it.
Amazing player. Lucky to see him on several occasions in San Francisco. Winterland Arena. Always different in his emotional state. But at times during his set. You would be dazed .
Mesmerized.
Stunned.
It seemed hard for him at times to stay focused.
Yet, truly one of the greatest players.
Bill Graham loved this guy.
Went out of his way to keep him working but his mental state was difficult to depend on.

Clapton used to go to a small Washington club he was playing before getting a little recognition in the early 70's. Unsung master but a player's player. Played on early R&R records and worked with Dale Hawkins (Suzie-Q). Told a story of how they used razor blades on the speakers to get early distortion - in the 50's, about a decade before Dave Davies (Kinks) who many think was the first to do so. He got it from guys like Roy.
For my money, Beck then Page then Clapton ... each to his own.

I had to pause the video 22 times just to look at his facial expression which never change. He has to be a robot. There's no one in the world that can express themselves or an expression. Roy was really rooted to the blues in both the traditional and otherwise sense. People who know his music always understand the innovation behind his style. I cant even put in words how gifted he was. He lives on through his music. Long live rock and roll. He really 😅 was one mean ass man
Saw Roy in Memphis, I have never witnessed at 70 years old someone walk out on a stage and absolutely burn the frets from one end to the other and the place went dead quiet! A drunk rowdy Memphis crowd went dead silent, I don't know who was on stage at that moment us or him. He never flinched, we recovered and were taught a lesson that night I have never forgotten. He came out front and stood with us after the show in the night air, man what a night, how could anyone have such absolute control of a guitar..........
