Yep he played with very heavy gauge strings from as light as 12's to as heavy as 17's. His main strings were 13's. He could bend any of those like mad!
Stevie knew how to pick a guitar tech! My brother played guitar after he shaved off half of his thumb at a sandwich shop! Not taken away from Stevie because he was my hero!!!!
I can’t even count how many times I’ve come back to this video over the years!!!! Stevie’s playing only continues to amaze and impress me as I become more proficient in my own playing. I absolutely love how he feels every second of the music while he contributes so much to it at the same time. The biggest blues legend in my opinion next to B.B. King. RIP!
Killed the song, broke a string and didnt miss a lick and 500 d bags who could never hold a candle to SRV's jam give him a thumbs down. F em. Thanks SRV luv u.

Growing up in Santa Ana California SRV was my hero. While my friends were listening to the Sex Pistols and Black flag, I was listening to SRV. H e was my hero.
Every time I see this I think of Wayne’s World 2. Chris Farley “I’m not not worthy! I’m not worthy! “ Stevie’s guy was awesome but he did bare a remarkable resemblance to Farley!
At about 1:10 , it's barely noticable but there is a slight hiccup in the recording where it takes a quarter second delay and I just love nitpicky stuff like that
This world is getting VERY ugly. Things that are beyond your imagination, and pain and suffering that is off the scale. If you are any kind of fighter, or any ancient being, we NEED you NOW! I'm crying typing this. You have to help. They are eating people, things worse than any vampire could even imagine. Humanity is helpless, and we need all of your strengths! Please help!!! Humanity needs to believe in your powers, and if you don't come together, nothing will be left!!! I'll only mention this briefly. There is a way out for all of you, BUT you have to help your fellows whom are in body! Please help, before it's too late! I am a Christian and I am begging all of you to help us!!! Do the right thing, please!!! We are calling on Nosferatu to help us!!! This is SERIOUS!!! There is only so many times I can make this body cry for us, and be ignored.
+Krizzly listened to this 20 times before i noticed the string XD Thought he did it for show :P. The switch is not that hard actually. Continuing with only 5 strings however and still sound bad ass.. That's seriously impressive.
+Odd Eleven Agreed, a tremolo bridge by its nature throws whatever 5 strings remain way the hell out of tune when one breaks, and until the switch is at hand he is wringing out an acceptable pitch somehow.....
Swamp T. I'm not that experienced of an guitar player. I mostly just strum rhythm and do something that barely pass a singing to myself XD But does it change that much just from one string breaking? From what i have experienced just pushing the strings harder/softer is enough to correct whenever they are in tune but not really 100%. I usually just stop tho and tune my guitar XD I'm not SRV and my finger are not magical :P hehe.
+Odd Eleven actually yeah... you notice he had to change everything he was doing to work around not having that one string. so really for him not having that one string isn't that big of deal but for the average Joe. without that one string we're pretty much out of commission.
yep... the most naturally talented, the best feel.. every frigging note is perfect.. Joe Walsh, SRV, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page : that's my top 4 guitarist list
Anyone that has ever popped a guitar string knows what it does to the sound of your guitar. The fact that Stevie was able to keep playing as if nothing had happened, with no noticeable change in tone - I mean...I don't even know what to say. We should all be so lucky to be as passionate about anything as Stevie was for the blues. Also, Rene Martinez is a fucking badass
I believe reason why the guitar didn’t go out of tune when the string broke was because his trem was backed up against the body instead of floating. From what I’ve read the number one and Lenny have their terms back again the body while the other strats were floating but correct me if I’m wrong.
Well, it was noticable if you're paying attention, losing one sting messes up the tension and therefore tuning of the whole guitar, but he did some creative bends and tricks and pulled it off pretty damn well. Most other musicians couldn't do what he did
I was 16 going on 17 when he passed. I now live about 20 minutes from Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy. Watching him play, one would think his guitar was an appendage he was born with.
remember that hat axl had the right to be asshole to his friends, because they where in drugs and drunk all the time.... axl was the most sober one of them
Reese Wynans is a killer keyboardist! Stevie Ray said that after Reese joined the band, they went from Double Trouble to a Triple Threat. The whole group was tight.
Sure was. That was back when they had Lou Ann Barton as the singer for the group. But he also said that about Double Trouble after Reese Wynans joined the band.
Everyone is rightfully pointing out SRV not missing a beat, the keyboardist who made a deal with the devil, but can we get an Amen for the guitar tech that hot swapped everything including the strap like a friggin champ? That guy is like Tiger Woods caddy, man.
Where do you start?....all I can say is Fuckin WOW, the heaviest , thickest, most viscous blues on the planet. I love how everything is forefront. Monstrous bass foundations, sexy ass drums, and SRV, THE man himself, in my ameture opinion, the best blues guitarist to walk the Earth.

How he handled that string snap was epic.
You can play his solos all you like. But you’ll never feel his solos as hard as he did

Such guitar swap transition can be only performed by Gods during a live event in front of people.
Obviously a well practiced routine between him and his guitar tech.

Gone to soon.
This is so much better than the recorded.
That string break thoo.....

The guitar switch is one of the smallest things about this performance.
It's one of the best performances I have ever seen.
I most certainly agree!
That guitar switch was a masterpiece but youre right, it wasnt even close to being the best part of this performance!!
props to the stage guy. He was Johnny on the spot with the guitar.

He just covered the detune with lots of bends
Wasn't this like a floating bridge. Cause I heard it happens in guitars with locking systems.
Well, it was noticable if you're paying attention, losing one sting messes up the tension and therefore tuning of the whole guitar, but he did some creative bends and tricks and pulled it off pretty damn well. Most other musicians couldn't do what he did
