I believe that instrument is called a "Hurdy-Gurdy". A medieval instrument, barely used anymore. It's got a strange name in English, while in German it's called a "Drehleier", which roughly translates to rotary lyre.
In italian is a Gironda
Sorry, Ghironda
In Danish its called "Dreje Lire" directly translated Rotary Lyre. "Hurdy Gurdy" is a weird name
and in french, is "Vielle à roue"
@@Thnielsen85 the origin of the name was when it went to England they mockingly called it a hurley burley. It was degrading the type of music that was played on it.
Hurley Burley gradually changed to Hurdy Gurdy.
Edit* in French it is vielle a roue which means Wheel Fiddle.
"There's a lot going on there." "Oh no, is it over?" That pretty much sums up my reaction to anything from Eluveitie.
Inis Mona, by Eluveitie! You gotta! One of my all-time favourites, a lot to unpack and I think you'll enjoy it!
Also just the singalong nostalgia.
Its like "Deathbringer in the Sky" by Ensiferum, just drunk singing bliss.
That entire album Slania is one of the best albums of all time, any genre.
indeed, but ill add call of the mountains to that also.
Oh yes, all the old Songs!! Helvetios, Rose for Epona!
“Oh no is it over” is almost always my reaction to eluveitie songs
Never thought playing bodhran, flute and hurdy gurdy could be so badass until I found Eluveitie.
They made playing bagpipes look epic too.
@@juliettemcgee9055 Fuck yeah that's what I thought when I first heard Call of the Mountains.
@@juliettemcgee9055 Yes but the bagpipes player from Arkona is even more.
@@meshuggagah4118 never heard of them. will check out
@@juliettemcgee9055 I recommend this short concert, 3 hours long :) Have fun. ua-cam.com/video/vrUNgv3YsNg/v-deo.html
Your way of dissecting what's going on in these has made my music writing better by alot, because it made me aware of ways to do things that I had never thought of before
Wow... this makes me smile big! Thank you so much for typing this. Means the world, honestly!
@@ChaseCarneson Of course! When we are able to get this new material recorded I will absolutely make sure you're able to hear it, as your breakdowns of Nightwish in particular gave me so many new ideas
The comments on the instruments have already been made, so I'm just going to recommend a few other Eluveitie songs:
"Inis Mona" - this is their usual set closer, traditional Irish melody
"Worship" - if you want to break your neck
"Call of the Mountains"" - their pop song
"King" - straightforward banger
Inis Mona is from Bretagne in france, it's a traditional celte song but not partixulary irish I think
@@titi9077 I'm also a big fan of Lvgvs, a lighter song and also based on a Breton melody if I remember correctly. EDIT: Oh, and Brictom, which was the first song I heard from them.
Slania's song my friend)
I think the reason they bring Celtic mythology and instruments into their music is because Switzerland was originally part of the pre-Roman Celtic civilization.
Talking about Eluveitie, their song "Thousanfold" really shows what the words "war flutes" mean.
You could be also interesed to their song "Omnos"; the lyrics are in ancient gaulish.
Nice reaction, as always.
I second that, definitely check out Thousandfold. It's such a rich song and a very good representation what this band is capable of.
Thanks for mentioning Omnos as well, one of my favorites.
Omnus, quoth the Raven, and rose for epona! \m/
King for that fire violin action. Eluveitie can do not much wrong for me though
"oh no, is it over?" explains everything
Thank you so much for Eluveitie reaction
Thank you for listening
The hurdy gurdy!! Check out Patty Gurdy. She'll enlighten you to its magic. And then check out the band she's in called Storm Seeker. Kinda pirate-metal ish. Pretty dope!
*she WAS in. Sadly... But the new stuff is also great. :D 🤘🏻
Patty plays the hurdy gurdy on the new Ayreon album "Transitus" which i instantly pre-ordered because i like Arjien Lucassens project and am curious how he implemented the gurdy in his prog metal sci-fi/fantasy story. Her latest song "Leaves and lemons" is such a happy melody.
@@ralflukas9695 yup, same. Love Ayreon.. Well done
Speaking of pirate metal, Patty did guest parts on Alestorm's new album
More Hurdy-Gurdy! 🤘🔥🌶️
That's an Irish Bouzouki, the same as Nightwish's Troy Donockley plays - it has four pairs of strings instead of the traditional three.
Two bands allied to Eluveitie you need to be aware of - Cellar Darling was formed when Anna Murphy (Hurdy-Gurdy) Ivo (Guitar) and Merlin (drums) were fired. And Fabienne Erni (female vocalist) and Jonas Wolf (guitar) have recently released their first album from their side-project, Illumishade.
Illumishade - Rise (Official Video)
Illumishade - Crystal Silence (Lyric Video)
Illumishade - World's End (Official Video)
Since Anna Murphy left the band I haven't really kept up with Eluveitie but this singer is really good, I'll have to listen more.
You should listen to them with Anna Murphy, she also had a great voice and she played the Hurdy Gurdy as well. Also she's done some solo stuff and worked with other bands.
The sound of all the different instruments is very unique and awesome. Its fun to watch them.
Michalina Malisz is their Hurdy-Gurdy player and she actually started on UA-cam covering Eluveitie songs on Hurdy-Gurdy. She has her own channel where she does playthroughs if you want to hear more of it in isolation.
Omg, what a surprise seeing Eluveitie on here, didn't even know people were recommending them! Saw them a couple years ago, I'm such a sucker for folk & all things mythology, they're one of my fav bands and I'm always glad when more people discover good music :)
Also: yes, there are a lot of instruments in this song, but you still need to add bagpipes to the mix! Another interesting info is that they use traditional Celtic music melodies and they refer mainly to Celtic mythology, in fact some of the songs have lyrics in a reconstructed form of Gaulish, an ancient Celtic language. As for the next song from them, I personally am in love with Epona - I don't know why but i can feel it deep in my soul, I'd never get tired of listening to that!
Yes I love Epona too, but also Breathe, Worship, Deathwalker, Helvetios, King, The Slumber, Ategnatos and many many more!!
@@fritsyt2090 I love them all but it's impossible to list all of them haha but i remember Epona in particular because i got to know them as a support act for another band, i just heard Epona and i was in a kinda trance, it felt so weird
I was one of them who recommended Eluveitie and many many thanks to all others. I think we got Chase hooked and he's enjoying it. Win-win!
Hopefully the ensemble Haggard made it on his list as well. They use interesting instruments as well and are ... well, different to other metal bands to say at least. Never heard a classic/death metal mix like them.
I'm so happy I could see both of them live and I can guarantee it's not just a perfect mix in their recordings. They can do that live as well which is just amazing.
@@saram1802 ha I know that feeling of being in trance. I have that with Breathe for example because of Fabi's voice in this one and all over chills and my eyes tearing up 😊
@@nothingTVatYT is Haggard similar to Epica?! Epica and Eluveitie are both my #1 😀
Such great and educational reaction. I really like when reactors pause and explain there moments instead of just sitting there and commenting at the end. And this band is going on my explore list. 👍🏻❤️
Nice one. This makes me very happy
If you like these guys, check out Korpiklaani; saw them both on tour together. They're also folk metal. Great to see another video, Chase!
Gods, yes! I'm still hoping to see Korpiklaani live some day.
@@Svartalf42 it was my first time seeing them, and I nearly dropped because my daughter poked me and said, "Dad, you know how you play bass barefoot on stage too? Put you in a kilt with longer hair and longer beard and he could be your twin." Holy shit she was right.
Korpiklaani live are a party and a half. Its been most of a decade for me, but I would guess they'd be just as much a drunken mess now as then.
@@Svartalf42 I've never heard of Korpiklaani. But, I'll damn sure check them out. Thanks.
@@aenorist2431 They headlined a show my friends band opened for! I got to hang out with them, Metsatoll, Tyr, and.... I can't remember the other band LOL. So cool! And yes... a drunken mess! Happy little boozers!
I for one am very glad you enjoyed this one. Looks like others long beat me by many hours to ID the instruments. If you want to hear the hurdy-gurdy more isolated in a song (not reaction-worthy, though), check out "The Longing" by Patty Gurdy (a cover of a song by Storm Seeker...the band she plays the hurdy-gurdy in, in fact - she also does educational videos about the instrument). Eluveitie has had some major lineup changes over the years. A few years ago their clean vocalist/hurdy-gurdy player and a few others broke off to form "Cellar Darling" (another neat band you might like), while Eluveitie continued with new guitarists and etc.
It's a little bit older, but if you want to hear the fiddle player really rock it, give their song "King" a listen...or "Call of the Mountains" - a song so popular that it got recorded in at least 4 different languages. Again, glad that you enjoyed listening to them!
"Tegernako" from one of their earliest albums, "Spirit", is another that really showcases their violin player's talents.
I would suggest Inis Mona, Epona or Call of the Mountain.
Also check out - Blind Guardian - The Bards Song/Valhalla live in Wacken, Dark Tranquillity - Therein live in Milan and Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars.
I just found you yesterday an already saq every video. Its quite unique to have someone with such a love for and knowledge of music to do these kind of videos! Keep that up :)
Blind Guardian rules🔥🔥
Oh my YES CHASE! You're finally digging into Eluveitie! I'd recommend you do King next - or if you want to stay on the same album, Deathwalker.
So, to add on to the hurdy gurdy part - the musician you're seeing in this video is Michalina Malisz - she's the new hurdy gurdy player for the band since 2017, and she does a lot of "playthroughs" on UA-cam - go check them out! As for Anna Murphy, ex-vocalist and hurdy gurdy player, she left with the ex-guitarist Ivo Henzi when the ex-drummer, Merlin Stutter, was expelled from the group (I don't remember why, though), and those three went on to create the group Cellar Darling. You can check them out too, although they're quite mellower than Eluveitie.
Michalina Malisz on hurdy gurdy, check out her channel, has some great stuff.
She even has a video that breaks down rebirth
Drums, bass, electric guitars, screams, frys, cleans, Bodhran, Uilleann Pipes, violin, Mandola, tin whistles, Celtic harp, Hurdy Gurdy.
Glad to see you get it.
This is why we all love Eluveitie.
Yessssss Love Eluveitie to the moon and back!!! For me the best Celtic/Folk Metal band on this planet!!
You had such a "No don't go" face when the video ended 😂. Great content man!
From one Chase to another. Thank you
I love how you actually can talk about the music, the dynamics, vocals and sounds and not only "thats a cool sound". And the dissapointed "Oh no is it over?" at the end. Very nice video.
You need to check out Cellar Darling for more hurdy Gurdy action. The members are all ex Eluveite. I’d recommend the song Insomnia or Death.
A male drummer
A female violinist (Wikipedia tells me she also sings sometimes)
A female hurdi gurdy player
A female vocalist (clean and harsh) and harpist
A male vocalist (only harsh in this song, but who knows) and flute player
Two male electric guitarists
A male bass player
A male multi instrumentalist who plays both flute (or whistle?) and mandolin (?)
Wikipedia also lists Bagpipes and Irish bouzouki (whatever that is) ...
Keep this journey going. They are fantastic !!
The bouzouki is a guitar relative of sorts if I am not mistaken.
And yes, as with Chase, I too can thank Troy from Nightwish for teaching me that :D
I'm Swiss, and played for a year and a half in an Eluveitie cover band. We actually found the best way to get a handle on all the different instruments, was to watch live shows because the mixing is never as good as their recorded music and different instruments will come through more strongly. It doesn't help that three members keep switching instruments! They do often have synth keys and pre-recorded choirs in the background. Their song Ategnatos even has didgeridoo in the intro.
Right now Eluveitie are 9 members:
Harsh vocals/tin whistle/bouzouki - Chrigel (Christian Glanzmann), founder and songwriter
Clean vocals/harp - Fabienne Erni
Guitars - Jonas Wolf and Rafael Salzmann
Bass - Kay Brem
Tin whistle/low whistle/bagpipes/bouzouki/bodhran - Matteo Sisti (bouzouki is like an irish/greek mandola, bodhran is that one-handed drum from the intro and acoustic break)
Hurdy-gurdy - Michalina Malisz
Fiddle - Nicole Ansperger
Drums - Alain Ackermann
I'm biased, being a massive fan of Eluveitie, but I'd love to see your analyses of more of their songs: King is awesome, Inis Mona is their best known, Call of the Mountains is also amazing and features their former female vocalist/hurdygurdy player Anna Murphy, and finally The Siege is also amazing and features Anna Murphy screaming along with Chrigel.
Oh, I loved Annas screaming in "The siege", so cool.
3 members of this band broke off and formed Cellar Darling. They're killer.
What i also have to say: I love you he is consuming the music while being completely consumed by it. He enjoys every second of this song and want to know everything. Its so nice to see someone being that passionate about music.
And the drum is a bodhran. Sorry for three in a row, but I'm commenting while watching.
Please don't be sorry, this is all really helpful.
@@ChaseCarneson Pronounced BAR-an (roughly). Just in case you do another video with this band. I pronounced it BOD-run for ages until I was firmly corrected by a folk society. :)
I have one of those! Played it a few times....not enough call for one these days... I live in hope!
Playing those is fun! :) I tried it out at Musikmesse Frankfurt a few years ago and kinda started jamming with the guy demoing them. Really cool percussion instrument :)
@@darrensmith3337 where are you from? Cos I've been taught go say "bow-ran" but that was in Kent, so it might have been their lack of linguistic ability ;)
I was so happy and surprised to see you react to Eluveitie! Yes, they have a TON of instruments. The one you keep talking about is called a Hurdy Gurdy. They have a few songs that isolate its sound. I think you will love falling down this rabbit hole. It's every.bit as enjoyable as Nightwish, but in different ways. Anything off of their Helvetios album is awesome. They even bring back a near dead language and translate the pronunciation as close as possible and work those words into their songs. Im gonna recommend A Rose For Epona next.
The instrument is a hurdy gurdy, it is almost like a cross between bagpipes and a violin in as much as it produces a droning sound by rubbing a wheel against the strings and notes are played using keys.
If you like this kind of thing there is a reasonably sized scene of German bands that do this kind of thing. Some to check out would be Tanzwut (the more metal side project of Corvus Corax), Salatio Mortis and Feuerschwanz who have just put out a new album. There is less screaming and growling in these bands but I have definitely heard some bands that utilise these vocal styles.
The drum the guy was playing in the clean sections is called a bodhran (bow-ran), it's a Celtic folk instrument!
Nice one, thanks for that.
@@ChaseCarneson you're welcome! If you like the folk instruments and vocal styles I'd second the recommend of Korpiklaani that others have made here. I'd also recommend Tyr!
Awesome reaction man, thank you! Another amazing songs from Eluveite are King, The Call of the Montains, A rose to Epona or Inis Mona (this last one is one of the oldest songs of them). Thanks again for this reaction.
Eluveitie doesn't have much to do with Swiss folk music. They are from Switzerland, but their music takes inspiration from several different folk genres (mainly Irish, Celtic and Germanic).
Feel free to do more from Eluveitie! They are amazing! And it makes me a very happy little Swiss man to hear them more ;)
I can’t believe I never heard him on the chorus before, and I have heard this song so often both at home and live!
Same; watching these reaction videos and hearing something for the first time after how many listens makes me feel like a musical moron.
Eluveitie is extremely versatile. Some of their songs are pretty black metallish and some is pure folk music without metal. Rebirth has both elements in it. And every now and then they have more symphonic elements as well. If you are interested on more of them A Rose for Epona is their classic (with their previous female lead Anna Murphy, now in a band called Cellar Darling), Call of the Mountains (also with Anna) is a catchy and "easy" song, Ambiramus has a folk party vibe and Worship is dark and symphonic. And their cover of Powerwolf's song When the Saints Are Going Wild (their version called Ira Sancti and sung in Gaulish) is also great.
You should check out "King" by Eluvietie next. That was the first song of theirs that I ever heard and it pulled me right in. It's from an earlier album with a slightly different band lineup. The female vocalist back then also played the mystery instrument you couldn't place lol. Speaking of which, as some have said, that instrument is a Hurdy Gurdy and it dates back to the middle ages. It is played by turning a crank handle, which spins a wheel across a series of strings, while the other hand is used to play keys that adjust the notes. Best way to describe the sound is a cross between bagpipes and a violin.
It is a Hurdy-Gurdy
It was around since around the 11th century. The instrument that was originally used in churches before the organ replaced it.
The drone strings have a sound similar to bagpipes.
The hurdy-gurdy player is Michalina Malisz, she has a UA-cam channel where she does covers and playthroughs of Eluveitie songs.
It originates from Persia some 100AD if IRC.. also used by The Byzantines.
Spanish monks just made it smaller so u can play it alone.
I just found out about this band a few months ago, and they're awesome.
Pretty cool huh?
@@ChaseCarneson Pretty cool indeed. I love a wide range of music, and always looking for more.
I had the pleasure to see them live at the "Feuertanz-Festival" and I'll never forget how amazing that was. After their gig I ran to their booth and purchased the CD.
I really like the way you react. I hope you continue with more Eluveitie like: Inis Mona, Thousandfold, King, Ategnatos and A Rose for Epona.
Also if you are interested more about said instrument check out ELUVEITIE - Deathwalker (OFFICIAL PLAYTHROUGH)
This was my first listen to Eluveitie as well. Loved it, and love your insights. First saw you for Ghost Love Score and subscribed after watching Poet and the Pendulum (my first ever subscription). You’ve caught nuances that I’ve missed in hundreds of listens, and made some of those old songs new for me. Now you’re expanding my horizons as well. Well done and thank you. Looking forward to the continued journey.
This makes me so happy. Thank you for supporting and going on this journey with me.
That instrument is the Hurdy Gurdy. They had a lineup change a couple of years ago in which their drummer, a guitarist and the hurdy gurdy player/ singer Anna Murphy, all parted ways and started their own band called Cellar Darling. They replaced the drummer and guitarist but they had to get two people to replace Anna Murphy. They had to get a hurdy gurdy player and a singer because they apparently couldn't find someone who did both. 😁
Eluveitie are in my top 10. They are amazing and have that combination of brutal and beautiful that I love so much. I recommend King that song is awesome.
Did anybody else feel like this really hearkens back to their older stuff? Love it!
I think the music I've listened to the most from Eluveitie is "Slania's Song" and "Quoth The Raven".
ok A) that is a Hurdy Gurdy as others have stated, B) NO they don't normally sound like that its just that Michalina Malisz is an ABSOLUTE BEAST (she has vids of her playing solo on youtube you can check out)
I'm happy you're finally reacting to Eluveitie! One thing to note is that their folk isn't necessarily Swiss folk. They are a band based in Switzerland, but most of their inspiration comes from ancient Celtic culture. They also have a lot of songs where they sing in a reconstructed Gaulish language!
Great reaction as usual, I love your insights!
Our Masters !
Found you through the Hypa Hypa reaction and I really enjoy your reactions :D You really know much about music (while I sit here as a complete noob) and I think youre a genuinely nice guy! Got yourself a new sub for sure :P
Awesome thank you! Welcome to the team and appreciate the kind words. We're all noobs when it comes to new music haha.
@Ateblade You should check out some of his previous reactions - all are great! (I'd suggest some Nightwish, 😁)
14:15 that's the face of a happy man :)
AS others pointed out, the instrument is called "Hurdy-Gurdy" ("Drehleier" in german). It is a very versatile instrument as it has several different sets of strings. Some of them can even get "switched on/off" on the fly. It is very common in folk or medieval styled bands (at least here in germany). If you want to hear it more isolated, you might want to have a look at Patty Gurdy here ua-cam.com/video/pyIXR3s8OtY/v-deo.html
Hurdy gurdy's are capable of such a variety of sounds that it can be tough to isolate, especially in a busy mix like this. Their Hurdy Gurgdy play, Michalina Malisz has her own youtube channel where she does playthroughs of their songs and others though, so if you want to hear it more clearly, you can. Also as a cool anecdote, she started off as just a fan of the band that posted covers but when their original hurdy gurdy player left the band, she got the job.
Don't normally comment, but I was smiling like a loon all the way through, this made my day. Thank you for the wonderful reaction and the insight. For more Eluveitie maybe check "Epona", "Inis Mona", or my personal favourite "King".
This band is a real hoot to see live!
Hmmm, not my favorite song or Era for Eluveitie (though I still enjoy it), but they are a pandora's box for sure between the folk instruments, heavy and melodeath metal influences, etc. I actually like the new singer's stuff, i just don't like it when she does the songs from the previous singer's stint. Anna Murphy, the singer before her just had a very unique voice (not eccentrically classically good, but like say, Stevie Nicks or Tom Petty, it's just so distinctive and infectious)
I'd be curious what you'd think of "A Rose for Epona" (with the old singer, not to be confused with "Epona", a good song with the new singer) or "Inis Mona" (mostly male and death vox). Also they have some truly amazing acoustic stuff, like "Omnos".
Ah Chase, you are truly finding the rabbit holes now, mate! Enjoy the journey!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Folk metal, where the rhythms are brutal and the instruments unidentifiable. Another recommendation Inis Mona.
If you get the chance have a listen Eluveitie's old hurdy gurdy player in her new band Cellar Darling. Everyone will throw out Avalanche but I am a particular fan of Hullaballoo mostly because I never thought I'd see someone do what looks like a guitar style whammy on a hurdy gurdy.
Other folk metal recommendations:
Korpiklaani (My fave: Rauta),
Turisas (Battle Metal for basic but I LOVE sahti waari)
Ensiferum (My fave is Dragonheads)
Tyr (Sinklars Visa which has a four part harmony which is INSANE live)
Ah, I was waiting for this. And as expected, the "what the heck is a hurdy gurdy" right in the into cut.
Love it!
By the way, just so you know, this is track number 15/16 on the album ; the last one (Eclipse) is the same chorus, sung acapella for 3 minutes, with only the sound of the wind. It's like the best way to end an album.
Yep, it's pretty much our biggest musical export... They're also really nice people, completely down to earth. I got to work with them at a local charity show (yes, the same band that plays main stage shows at big festivals such as Wacken or Summer Breeze actually cancelled a show in order to play a local charity gig with an audience of 300 people)
Case in point of the reason why I like a mix of melodic vocals and growls - there's just so many interesting things you can do with the contrast musically. It was kind of interesting to actually hear 'backup growls' where the growl vocals were being done behind the melodic vocals, but they were done very softly... I don't see that very often, usually they're either as loud or louder than the melodic vocals - I have to give kudos for whoever mixed the vocals for setting that up right.
Thanks you for checking out this awesome band!!! As others have said, that's a hurdy gurdy & a striing instrument with keys from the middle ages isn't exactly normal in a metal band, but then again, neither are several other of their instruments LOL! As for other songs, I'd suggest the title track from the album Ategnatos, Breathe, The Slumber, The Call of the Mountains, and the lyric video for A Rose For Epona ;-) Thanks again & have an awesome day!
Thanks for the info!
Chase Carneson you’re most welcome 😎👍
I've seen Eluveitie last year together with Lacuna Coil and infected rain for the first time. They're one of the few Bands that sound live as good if not better than in the studio. All of them master their instruments, their songs are so unique and they suck you in with their stage presence. The call of the mountain may be their most known song, but I would highly recommend to listen to inis mona, epona, helvetios or king.
I always love seeing people first seeing a Hurdy Gurdy. Felt the same way when I found this band
Love ELUVEITIE!!!!!! I'll admit I've been anxiously waiting for another Babymetal video but this was a welcome surprise :)
Can't promise a song as crazy and complex as this one, but my personal favourite song by them is "A Rose For Epona". Cheers for another great video!
Love your excitement experiencing this :D
'Oh no is it over' - Me at the end of every one of Chase's videos! Awesome to see you reacting to these guys, don't get many people analyzing them. Saw them live once, definitely win the award for most band members on a single stage I've ever seen! Their latest album Ategnatos is one of my favourites, would happily sit and listen to you react to every song on it! Some gems and a real variety in their older stuff too! Keep up the great work!
Haggard won that award before them and still unbeated, they are about 10-15 people on stage... Saying that, I loved Eluveitie since I heard your gaulish war 12 years ago, I've seen them 5 times live
You got the best reaction to this song in youtube.
And the intrument you curious about is call "Hurdy Gurdy" a lot of folk band use this thing.
The harp is called a Clarsach which is an 'Irish' harp. It's used in celtic/irish/scottish music.
They‘re an amazing live experience, so much to look at on the stage and to handle in your brain, in a good way 🙂
PS: The instrument should be a hurdy-gurdy?
Eluveitie is a great band to continue the adventure into the more "exotic" metal bands.
I also support going for "Inis Mona" & "Thousandfold" by them.
Great video! I appreciate you and this community so much! That bodhran playing made me think of the SIDH's song Iridium. They're an Italian band that plays what I would call Celtic Electronica Metal, that I think you'll love. Cheers!
I appreciate you right back!!!
15 seconds in the song....Yep, i'm diggin' this !
Great reaction! The stringed instrument is a Bouzouki, sort of like a tenor Mandolin. And young lady is playing a Hurdy Gurdy.
Thanks for the info! That's really helpful.
Irish Bouzouki, to be precise.
@@ChrisPage68 Now where have I seen that before 🤔😜
Eluveitie- king
This face of pure joy, discovering Eluveitie for the very first time! 👌
You seem to be very interested in the hurdy-gurdy! I wanted to played it once, but I finally preferred the harp.
Make sure to also try songs with the previous singer Anna Murphy. Here is a little list of proposals : Alesia, Inis Mona, Helvetios, A Rose for Epona, Bloodstained Ground, Gaulish War... 💕
Holy shit, 3rd video ive watched of you now.. And i can already say you are my top fac reactor! I just love the way you appriciate the songs! Can just see it in ur smile and facial expression! So refreshing! I feel like most reactors just fake or hype it up a little too much, BUt you seem real geniune! keep it up!
I appreciate you. Thanks for this.
The crank she's turning is connected to a wheel on the hurdy gurdy that functions as the bow on a violin. It's covered in horse hair just like a bow. Unlike the bow it's in contact with all the strings all the time. Instead of using your fingers to press down on the strings to make it change pitch (like on a guitar) you press a key. The keys works like the frets on a guitar, but instead of pressing the sting down to the fret you push the fret against the string.
The instrument you are curious about is a hurdy gurdy. It is very common in the folk metal scene and music. If you want to learn more about this instrument watch the videos of Patty Gurdy.
Others have mentioned the hurdy-gurdy. The drum during that first clean is a bodhran. I believe the other stringed instrument is a lute.
Short explanation of the hurdy gurdy: Theres a central wheel (driven by the crank she is turning) that essentially is a circular "bow" like what a violinist would use.
It engages a variety of strings, kind of like the different pipes on a bagpipe, so it harmonizes with itself in a way (think one-man-band).
Theres the drones, constant, theres a set of keyed strings which she plays the lead on, and I think something else too, above that.
Very cool instrument for sure, historic to the german-speaking countries primarily I think, as pointed out in other comments.
There is a neat explanation of it by patty gurdy here on youtube, an up and coming gurdyist (or whatever the term may be).
Just rummaging through your old reactions, lol.
"That was very good..." I'm not sure I've ever seen you, lacking for words to say.
So you saw a hurdy gurdy, and heard some of the more interesting crank-strokes that can be done... super-short crank-hand oscillations make the drone string bark like crazy..
The drum is an Irish Bodhran... and that's how they sound (much was kinda covered in the mix),
The speed mimics trad Irish, and is astonishing... one night at a Portland OR Bar (East Ave Tav) I sat in on an Irish jam.
At the time, two of the members of the Bothy Band had moved to Portland, and were sitting in, or rather one was playing Sligo Fiddle and the other was about 14 pints into the evening... so I got to play 'pickup' guitar. I've never played in such an intense situation in my life.
And it was just acoustics.
I woulda loved to have brought my 6x6L6GC amp into the place with my Firebird, but the world just wasn't ready (about 1980) for Eluveitie yet.
So yeah, trad can be sense-storming.
....oh, yeah... NEVER sit next to the pipes player... Instant tinnitus... worse than a rifle range.
Ah,yes! Back in the days, this band grabed me by my love for folk and medieval (rock) music and pulled me into the metal music world. :D 👍
lead singer from Atreyu had a very high pitched, feminine sounding scream, for sure. I had Bleeding Mascara stuck in my head earlier, and I swear I couldn't place it, because I thought it was female.
Their Hurdy-Gurdy player Michalina Malisz has her own UA-cam channel.
I always love the first reaction to my favorite band
You are the first, I think, that distinguish all the instruments. That is worth my subscribe.

An Apocalyptica reaction would be awesome!
Funny you mention that. Bismarck is coming out soon.

i highly recommend checking out their song King
The woman on the Hurdy-Gurdy (The music box) Is Michalina Malisz. She has a UA-cam Channel where she explains what is this instrument and the basics on how to play it :)
ua-cam.com/channels/8affupLOlkEtH6QZGY_9Lg.html. You'll love this!
In german we call that Instrument "Drehleier", the strings are stroked by a wheel, activated by a crank. There are bordunstrings also. I love the sound of that instrument.
Soooo cool. I wouldn't even know how to pick it up, nevermind play it.
@@ChaseCarneson ua-cam.com/video/pyIXR3s8OtY/v-deo.html here you can see a very talented girl play a modern "Drehleier". As I mentioned, the sound of this instrument is awesome. take care.
@@ChaseCarneson also called a Hurdy Gurdy.
@@Heinzaemon I just saw your comment after making mine. A tip of the hat to ye for us thinking alike :)
@@ChaseCarneson and it can really easily be mistaken for a synth, if you can't see it being played
I first heard this band about a year ago and I was floored with the diversity they have. They truly are a phenomenal band brother!
This was a very good reaction
First don’t I heard from them was Dance of Victory. EPIC intro. Innis Mona is a classic. Listen to King if you want a badass flue solo.
Friggin Sweet ... ty .. loved it
