Toyota Hilux: Will It Rally?

- Will It Rally? This new web series from The Team O'Neil Rally School asks the only car question that really matters: Will it Rally? Ride along as we test the limits of different vehicles on our snow and ice covered skidpad and slalom areas, before putting them against the stopwatch on a mountainous rally stage here at Team O'Neil.
In this episode, the Toyota Hilux is put to the test after a dusting of fresh snowfall. With it's insanely good winter tires and little diesel engine, the Hilux is definitely a unique choice for rally racing. But will it do it? You be the judge.

My old man has had at least a dozen of these in various years and models. It was the work horse of NZ until other manufacturers started upping their game, i.e Mitsubitshi, Mazda and the small trucks that Ford and Holden (GM) produced. Now the newer ones aren't as popular as the old ones were.
I would trade my '17 wrx which i love, for that truck in good condition like that
Ahh. A man of culture. I got a Land cruiser from 1997, which is basically the same car, except it has the 3L TD. Lifted and modded back in the days by Arctic Trucks. I decided to add an intercooler, as 125 HP wasn't enough to keep up with newer trucks off-road and uphill.
I have a 2017 HiLux and friend of mine has a 1997. They are both bloody awsome
@@Mp57navy Super Nice! Some day i'll find one
In Australia landcruisers and hilux are #1
I own a 89 hj75 flat tray, 6” lift, 35s and a hj61 12ht turbo diesel inline 6 engine
Badass truck. Love the subtle mods. Wish the states got these.
I approve! Just a tip. Horsepower only get you so far on snow. Drop the tire pressure on that Hilux to 15 PSI and try again!
Soft sidewall, which 15psi would cause, would reduce your cornering speed though
Love your show. You should talk more about the cara also have a leader board.+ We already like you make more shows, like rally lessons and maybe review classic rally cars around your track
What a beautiful truck 😍❤️💢💢💢
Will it Rally?: Chevrolet Suburban
Or even better.
Will it Rally?: 1977 Cadillac Eldorado
In England that's considered a normal sized Truck and then he's calling it little 😂
what about the 2006 to 2014 one will it rally ???
If we can get our hands on one here in the States, we'll give it a try!
I am looking into offroad rally raid vehicle for t
Rally events in pakistan. I have option of pajero evolution or hilux. Pajero has all wheel independant suspension whil hilux has only ifs . which would be better?
We don't have the Pajero here in the USA so I can't really testify to it's exact characteristics, but if you need a lot of suspension travel, it's pretty easy with a solid rear axle like the Hilux. Most of the desert racing trucks here in North America use a solid rear axle for that reason, plus they are very strong. If you go IFS, if you want more suspension travel the driveshafts and CV joints are going to be at high angles, so that will limit how much travel you can use before the driveshafts explode.
Try the newer 2.8 GD-6 hilux
but what is the criterion to determine whether or not it is good in the rally, because any car with ground clearance will complete the circuit.
It's just for fun, and to show that Wyatt can drive anything well.
What kind of tires were you using?
This one is on Yokohamas
Where and how did you get that diesel Hilux into the United States? I need to know lol
It's from Canada, and old enough we got it in pretty easy!
@@Teamoneilrally Ah, that makes sense. Thanks!
Less music volume, more motor...
Finn Gürgens where you at?
Just a suggestion. I think a brief summary of some technical aspects of the car (what motor / FWD / RWD / 4WD etc.) as a voiceover at 0:47-1:00 would help the viewer build up their own expectations.
Agreed!
Hilux has either a 2.4L Turbo diesel or a 3L TD. Later models will have an intercooler and commonrail injection. THe particular model he had there looked and sounded like a 2.4L (2L-T engine) without Intercooler. The gearing is normally: 4H (4wd with open center diff) 4HL (4wd locked center) 4WL (4LL locked center+low gearing).
I was kinda confused when he talked about only having 2 wheel drive. I suppose that was an error. Some models will have the option to lock the rear differential as well electronically.
As someone who is about take one of these (at least the american version) to some ARA events, yes. But I can tell you its the 2.8 3L Diesel engine. (Hi UNOH friends)

*The Corolla did a **2:36**.87*
*This Hilux did **2:44**.47*
Corolla is still on top!!
hOw is the corolla on top, thats really surprising
Next up is their subaru, so corolla is gonna get murdered on the next episode
Id like to see them do them over in the dirt when all the snow is gone
@@yc5263 Just a guess here but I own one and can tell you it's both light and has a pretty well designed suspension that's on the soft side. That's a good thing for rally cars. I live on a dirt road with a horrible driveway and after it rains the car does surprisingly well, though uphill slips trigger the traction control like clockwork.
Can no one defeat the legendary Corolla?
Used a old Hilux in Afghanistan to refuel generators when all the fuelers left our base. Starter didnt work but parking it on a hill made it not an issue. Things was durable
You probably could’ve got the starter working by tapping it with a hammer
@@calebnation7797or even a rock lmao
Mankind will perish, but not a toyota hilux. And it will rally too..
"Mankind will perish, but not a toyota hilux." Unless it sees water, in which case the frame will spontaneously rust through as metal-chan attempts to escape the scary scary water.
@@Skig543 unless its the Top Gear Hilux, which drives after sinking in the sea
@@Skig543 the frame of the hilux never had issues like the tacoma in the US
Mr Regular of Regular Car Reviews daily drives an old Subaru Legacy wagon. Seeing a Legacy on the rally course would be great, and it would be a great way to increase viewers
the legacy should be covered in *B R O W N* to make it go faster
This thing will out rally anything modern in 50 years, cause in 50 years, everything modern will be on cinder blocks!
would be good to see all previous cars times
We need some lightweight action, a e30/e36 would be fun to see as they're really popular rally cars in finland
please, keep the series going and, please, try a suzuki swift 4x4 if you can ^^"

Coffee spill
And on the hand too. Ouch.
Oliver Hilton look in his face! 😂
You should try to rally a ford Crown Victoria police interceptor
Will it Rally? I'm 99% sure that all tried cars will. After all it more depends on driver, and you have no clear cut "not pass" rules.
So i'm now rather especially waiting for some vehicle that won't. How about especially trying out such? My suggestions to try: school bus (simply dimensions not allowing to fit within road sideways) and reliant robin, which will be sideways .. on it's side, in very first turn. :).
Also - have you thought of trying out kart in rally? :) - it's load of fun (with appropriate studded tires of course) for ice racing .. but i wonder if it can do anything with it's ground clearance on snow ..
School bus you say. My Ole bus driver had to at times pull a oversteer slide in the winter. We would be almost to the asphalt roads, 7 miles down, and then get a radio that school is cancelled.
True, they are too big for most gravel roads, but when there is room.
Someone already said this, but a forester would be very cool to see
I'd be interested to see more cars with part time AWD. Actually a good one would be an 07-11 CRV, those things have a kinda primitive part time AWD system that could make it tricky. Also the gearing could be interesting since the gears are so tall
Probably would wear out the awd system that it uses
I should bring you my F-350 crew cab 8' ft bed worktruck to rally. It's got a v10 and manual transmission,
Отлично) у меня тоже Toyota Hilux LN 106 Заходи к нам на канал)))
someone posted the times on a previous video. The Hilux got a time between the explorer and the Astro van.

Pls do a Prius for will it rally, or a similar hyrbid. Would be awesome to see them compare. :D
That would be interesting to see, especially with the new one being equipped with a bare bone basic awd
@@That_fella_named_J the prius will crash. It's shit.
Can you do a Hilux vs Tacoma comparison with trucks from the same year?
I love the video, but AGAIN too loud music for too long...
Shoutout to top gear the old cast
Would be better if you put the car spec on screen to get viewers the idea compare to what they have. Some cars including this Hilux have many variants, my guess this one has 3L non-turbo engine in it.
It is probably a 4-cylinder diesel, not 3-liter, but a 2,5 maybe.
@@Manakuski 3L is 2.8 and 2L is 2.5, not much different but would be better if they let us know what it is.

The shakedown segments are way too short. I want to see some epic freestyle.
MORE BAD MUSIC played TOO LOUD for TOO LONG.
Toyota Hilux will do whatever bidding you may ask of it.
Get a stock forester on the show
a chart of times would be great too
You can get a left hand drive Hilux from Central America cheaper.
Will a Chevy HHR rally???
Will it Rally suggestion: first/second gen subaru forester(non-sti).
We had an older version of the Hilux at our Rescue unit and with all of our gear in the back, I was scared shitless every time I needed to get into the sand of our local beach. It would tip over with such ease that it was no joke.

These things are bullet proof. Will it Rally??? These things have been racing all over the planet in all kinds of configurations!
It's a 2L-engine. They have power all the way till 4000 rpm. Witch is quite a lot for a diesel. But on the other hand, they have little to no power to give. A friend of mine has one of these without turbo, leaving him with 80 hp. The turbo models had about 90 hp...
Does anyone know what tires are on this rig?
Edit: for anyone who is wondering, my guess is Geolandar i/t in a 315/75r16. Which sounds extremely rad.
Try a subaru Forester XT SJ!!!
Lol america got it to we just didn't get the cooler models. In the states its called a toyota "pickup" and yeah they go like a bat outta hell
You guys should try a Volvo 240, they're pretty great to slide in snow. They have so much steering angle.
Agreed!
You probably could rally this truck in a volcano, with no atmosphere, and underwater, all at the same time and it probably would still be better and more reliable than any other truck
An E30/36/46 would be tight!
I wanna see the original Toyota Pickup rally.
its a beautiful truck, i own the same in green, whats the tire size?
That 'yote is way WAY too clean. Where's all the dents and scratches? Something ain't right...
Could yall do the nissan hardbody d21? If you havent already...
Hyundai Kona
What about an airport baggage tug? I already know the answer to that but the public must know!
Hey, can make a "will it rally?" on the Jeep Compass Trailhawk?
Now see what a real rally car time will be. Curious to know the difference
Rally a Honda Odyssey
Love the tire deformation/bounce in the slo-mo shots.
Great videos in this series, and happy to see you've been refining them as you've progressed. A leader board is the only thing missing at the moment and mention of a cut off time of when a car "won't rally", considering the talented driver and seeing how a AWD van made a respectable time, I'm guessing it will take a low slung summer tire'd car to not rally haha.
I want that truck. So unique and super clean! Idc how hard they drive it at TO!
Do a geo metro lmao
Will it Rally: *Saturn Vue*
They should try the 22r version or the v6 version the v6 has pretty good amount of nads
You should do it with a ford focus with the dct powershift. Ive got one and i'd love to see this ! :o
Could you have got an older Hilux? Try a modern one it would do very well on your course.
i have a 2009 hilux. still running great. no maintenance issue so far.
Ya hauled ass in that tank!
Do a shitty cruze! I mean chevy cruze
Hi
I think Wyatt can make any car rally;)
its too bad that isnt a solid axle hilux! thats the main appeal to me of the non usa models is being able to get a solid axle diesel one
Independent Suspension vs live axle for rally?
Ifs or all wheel IND suspension
Independent most of the time, but I replied to your other comment about trucks with more detail regarding long-travel
How come right-hand drive vehicle can get a registration in the US?
The one issue that I’ve got with this is that, it’s not a pickup truck, it’s a Ute
Hey what’s up, can you try the G35x any year please 😁
If Hilux cannot rally, barely can anything else
Would it rally if the road is bumpy and sandy, dirt
Navara's die parra, Onder die Amarok, ek ry n Amabroek, Ja n Hilux
With that lift I'd be worried about rolling it...
a Hilux?! in the States?! any chance for a Import Link?
Sometimes they pop up on bringatrailer.com
make a video trying a Suzuki swift
Will that VW wagon in the background rally
will you do one of the subaru crosstrek
Do a gas powered Tacoma, set up as close to that as possible
It's a Toyota. Course they can rally. ;)
Lucky your on ice or you'd have rolled, driving like that with traction is suicide. But traction is what there made for not rally
