GOING OFF-ROAD IN A STANDARD 4WD! How to AVOID breakages & getting STUCK!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Jocko’s back in the workshop because it's finally time to add some 4WD mods to his stock N70 Hilux!
In the last build episode, Jocko went through the vehicle front to back to look at its reliability and added power to the engine (check out the first build episode here: • DREAM 4WD build on a b... )
Now it's time for the fun stuff, Jocko takes the N70 out bush for a torture test to see how far you can push a stock 4WD offroad before you start adding mods like suspension, wheels and lockers. Leave a comment about how your 4x4 builds are going and if you have any mechanical hacks and tips!

A great video mate, I dare say a lot of people myself included don’t have a lot of money, have an IFS ute and just want to see how far it goes without breaking something but upgrading small pieces bit by bit. A great way to connect with a lot of your viewers in very similar situations, well done.
Certain breakages are just gunna happen. Carry a cv and some u joints and things like that that are not super expensive and more prone to breaking
Yes!
Thanks mate, Jocko loves these kind of build and doing it on the cheap, there will be plenty more episodes like this to come!
Agree with your statements mate
@@swampypolitics9574 been wheeling a stock 2007 hilux. Never done a cv, cvs break when they are under to much pressure from mainly drivers error, whether it’s driving like an idiot or trying to drive some thing to hard for the car, or lifting the ifs to much without a diff drop.
Looking forward to seeing how this build turns out 👍
Took my stock Ranger off-roading. First thing I broke was side steps - 1 ripping it off in a mud puddle and 1 bashed by a rock. Rock sliders were the first mod!
Mind you, it went pretty ok offroad. It was quite fun anyway!
My wife and I have done an awful lot in a standard 2003 Hilux with Cooper AT3 tryes. The Snowys, the Simpson and lots of other non-"name places". There are so often alternative routes near an obstacle that suit stock cars. Best "mod" - have a playground with a ton of different lines and different sorts of obstacles and spend time going from easy to hard and improve your technique and car control. Practice doesn't need to be a chore!
cant wait to see jock do some trips in this rig!
So I’ve got the same stock hylux I added a 100 ltr fridge made a cage for it out of an old screen door light and works epic have 1 titan draw 12 volt system peddler 2 inch lift and constant 300 in the rear. And a snorkel a/t tyres on original rims no bar work yet although there is literally thousands I want to spend to get it where I’m happy. I’d love a rear locker also and a full canopy set up. But it’s just a lot of money
Love ur work jocko
See its yours
If its a work car or a rental you would be amazed how far it goes!
Seriously i use mine spec current hilux lifted oversized muddies with dif lock every work day and some times have to absolutely send it!
Great video Jocko this series is coming in handy as I have a stock n70 I'm building up my self
Jocko: "before we do any mods, I wanna take it out in the bush and see how it performs completely stock. But before that, we're gonna do some mods."
Really enjoyable video for me.Looking forward to seeing how this build turns out
always good to see what other people are doing to their set up's
right on Jocko 1st thing a winch👍
Shorter wheelbase? Always fun to watch... Thumbs up!
Was there when filming.. the watagans is a mad place to wheel.. that rock step up is no joke.. I went around it also. Wanna see it go up the hard lines at 5ways when it’s done.. that’s comp truck shit
4 inch lift on 40's with a big FU sticker on real window , for our boys in blue lol
He's got a ute and throws the muddy flap in the cab 😂
I want to manufacture my own sliders so would love to see the details of the sliders you put on, tube Dia, leg thickness that sort of stuff
Amazing mods✌💪
Weekend tourer..You need an electric Capsule coffee pot...would be funny and probably first no lot of peoples mind
Great info video! Question I have though.. when will we see Shaun's 200 series again?
Jock makes that Lux look like a toy when he stands next to it.
Glad we don’t have to worry about weight here in the us unless your a rig then you do
Love watching you there.
But probably be easier in an isuzu.
But as for the rear mud flaps.
Why don't the factory guys just make them out of rubber
Nice Content
Eveyone always says put a suspension lift in so you can fit bigger tyres. How is this possible a suspension lift does not increase the size of the wheel wells. Wouldn’t it be better to fit larger tyres at standard height with correct dampening and keep a lower centre of gravity?🧐
Next should be barwork and protection and tires.
That's the plan
Stocko Jocko
You don't 'have' to do a suspension lift to fit bigger tyres. 07.56 mins.
Licence plate (EBY) in my native language means "Fuk it". :))))
Build a jack off tub/tray/canopy, one that fits on all of your luxys..
Jacko, what brand snorkel is that? Looks sexy!
Nice one 😂
Is 4wd24/7 a full time job
Sure is mate!
Suspension lift doesn’t really help fit bigger tires
That EFS bar looks cheap and nasty, they haven’t even put the sticker on square
I have been skipping some video's on this channel lately and I must say this video was super interesting. Watching the team do hard tracks weekly has not hit the spot with me lately and always find video's very interesting regarding tyres and general product or vehicle reviews, especially becasue the guys are super knowledgeable.
how ytis show is the best
How do you know the other videos weren't interesting if you skipped them?
Bullbar, tyres, winch, suspension, roof platform, 12v setup, front mount, snorkel, UHF, tune, etc etc. not cheap
I think that taking a stock vehicle wheeling before upgrading is a must! Not only do you see where you need to make changes first… but also it teaches you how to pick a line on obstacles. That the reason I love this channel. Graham is right there with the highly modded rigs but with a little line picking he can go right with them!! Great channel for learning and always entertaining!!!
Totally agree! Theres to many people out there with all "the gear and have no idea"
@@4WD247 what are your thoughts of the 75 series
First
IMO tyres should probably be one of your first mods. Everyone is always obsessed with getting the biggest tyres possible, but most dual-cabs will fit a 31-32" tyre on stock suspension and rims, and a decent-priced AT (or even cheaper MT) will get you a LOT further than those HTs while you're building up funds for other mods.
Yup, just tyres not even wheels really. You can get yourself a lift by just putting bugger tyres on than from factory and with more grip which will let ya go further
I have just snuck mine up to 32's (ish) with a 2 inch lift. Simply because going up to 33's will be burning fuel and increasing driveline stress for the 60-70% i use it on paved roads. It just doesnt make sense, and it gets me anywhere i have tried to go
Can even get cheap as MT/AT and throw them on some steelies. Change over when heading out. Saves fuel and they will last ages.
That's true mate, but we all have to start somewhere
Thanks Jocko - I bought my N70 Diesel Auto early Feb 2020 just before Covid for 18k (yes I know what you’re thinking) - it had low kms, spotless duco and interior with factory bullbar, ARB canopy and ARB tow bar - I’m a solo touring cyclist in Australia and discovered the practicality (water access) and common sense (security) of touring the outback with a vehicle compared to my easy 6 mth treks through Europe - this ute has been amazing as a standard ‘light” off-roader and tourer for my needs - the ARB canopy and tub have now been replaced with 1600mm canopy because unlike you I’m short in stature and had trouble reaching into the side windows and over the rear tailgate - I’ve fitted ‘truck’ spec A/T tyres, Safari snorkel and that’s all I need - a NSW/QLD chap on Gumtree made a roof console fully lined to suit this model for around $280.
How to avoid breakages and getting stuck...... give it to jesse to drive
You're not wrong
Lmao 🤣 😂😂😂
Not sure about the damage part but definitely the getting stuck part
cool almost my mods.
Started with bumper (rhine evolution) front and rocksliders (handmade from poland).
Next was winch bashplate (frontrunner, had to modify cause of bad fit) and in thereafter a 2" lift (OME rear and kings front with 4 ToughDoug dampeners. 350+ kg set). Recently i've chosen slightly bigger tyres 32.2" on steelies (Dotz Dakar 7j et20 r17, Cooper st maxx 275/70R17) and chucked in a plate for gearbox.
Here in europe it gets me anywhere, it is my daily.
How much did putting that Bullbar (and winch) on the front decrease the clearance on stock springs? Somehow I doubt it would have helped.
Like the idea of dropping parts you don't need in the dry run and replace or upgrade all that survived or scraped through 😀
Hi per my previous understanding what you did before and you should use 35 inches ties and modify all the internal parts and the price should be more practical than normal market exists.
Thanks
First 😂
Right.... So bullbar with winch because that's absolutely standard from factory.... Dude a stock Hilux will go most places with just tyres & you have a winch.... You'll get out of anywhere basically this test is so pointless TEST IT WITHOUT A WINCH DUDE
Yep, the weight of the bar and winch has a big effect on the front suspension, 60-80 kgs in front of the axle reduces your clearance a fair bit.
@@Wdeane1957 no just no.... Wake up that's not STANDARD OR "STOCK" 🤠🤣 Have you ever seen a stock 4x4 with a winch no that's called a modification complete pointless test. Period. Take the bar & winch off.. and actually test the vehicle
@Jake Whiteley yes, no engine tune or anything fitted is "stock".
FIRST!
Jocko mate, if you can please make note of items such as ground clearance, approach, breakover and departure angles prior to modifying it. Would be interesting to see a comparison of before and after. Cheers!
Jocko will be doing something similar in the next ep
@@4WD247 Awesome. I look forward to it!
Ideally before the bullbar was installed since ithas already taken a bit of clearance on the stock suspension
Drove my N70 up Billy Goats and Blue Rag with it stock. Only mods were snorkel and All Terrains. Mind u I do prefer the 2” and bullbar with winch and sliders I have now. Lol enjoyed the vid Jock. 👍🏻
Creek road isnt what it used to be. Its not the "pretty simple" track anymore.
Love it
And 1st
I'd look up the word "standard" as that vehicle isn't standard as in factory ........
When you get used to owning a capable 4wd, it truely shocking how terrible stock 4wds are in the bush lol I have to remind myself a lot in the work Ute
You're not wrong, but we have to start somewhere
I'd still take a stock GU over a moderately modified ute though
If ya only got the $ for 1 locker would you go front or rear?
Nice one boys
The type of wheeling you guys do I would recommend a really good first aid kit
Got a stock ‘05 Jeep WK Grand Cherokee with a V8 hemi, all stock (KO2 tires on it).
While I would LOVE to gove it a 3-4 inch lift and some 33s, it gets me where I need currently. Definitely still plan on doing upgrades but $$ is an issue atm sadly
Must sound good with the hemi mate! You might be able to get away with a 2 inch lift and 33s? It would handle much better on the road
Early
Thanks for noticing 👌
How about as part of these builds you provide real world retail costings inc labour. Then the average punter without trade mates can see what these mods are really costing and make truely informed decisions.
I'll be curious to see how you handle touring storage with daily driver space.
We don't have the luxury of multiple 4wds, so the one vehicle has to be a daily driver and also accommodate us on trips. I'm considering putting in some tie down rails rather than drawers. Keep all the room in the back, and then store everything in canvas bags we can just strap or net down.
But also have a 90 series, so a lot less room than a ute.
IFS is great. Once they're lifted on larger tires, the lack of front pumpkin and smooth skid plates really lets them slide over obstacles.
Remove the front swaybar, you'll be amaze how much more flex you can gain in that stock setup.
Who's taking bets it ends up similar his other mint Luxys (inc a diff drop?).😁
07:29 technically it's an example of poor driving technique. In that Luxy I'd straddle the ruts 07:14
If you want a true challenge wheeling leave it stock cos most mongs can wheel twin locked 35s 4bys 😜
Well he said that at the very end. If his planned mods aren’t good enough he will have to look at more extreme mods.
Since everything is a 'dog', shouldn't you be feeding it??
First
were all first !
Been waiting for a video on this ….. there is a lot of people that dont have 80 series lcs on 37 with 12 inch lifts 🙄
Haha mate, neither do we! 😂
Nice video Jock. Mates with these have fitted RG Colorado leafs on the rear ( couple of hundred bucks on Marketplace ) and fitted extended shackles, shocks and brake lines for some impressive rear articulation.
Pity you pushed it a little too far on that trip. Nice dent to the RHS sill. 😁👍
Cheers mate, she had to get damaged one day 😆
This episode should have been titled “Jock-dog in a Stock-dog”
As usual Jocko, best tutorial.
Thanks mate!
Meh. He’s a fanboy.
Yup second that
Damn, I thought it was a long video with shauno and Graham 😢
Man I can already see a build like the pony looming up,watch these space.
my ranger wildtrak is bone stock besides bf goodrich AT's and skid plates. Got me everywhere thus far. But thanks to your channel, it's what got me into 4wheeling and manufacturing offroad gear.
You gave no differing option than run out and spend 10k on 12volt and lifts. PEOPLE IF YOU WANT A CHEAP 4WD BUY WITH A LOCKER AND SLAP 33s on it, maybe spacers lift and your off riding.
DUDE!!! WHEELING ANY CAR IS FUN UNTIL YOU START DAMAGING IT. You have missed the point totally. Do what you can do safely unless you have a trophy truck.
"GOING OFF-ROAD IN A STANDARD 4WD!" The first 5 minutes is covering all the non-standard modifications.........right,,,,
Body lift. It's one of the cheapest mods I did to fit bigger tires. I rarely hear it mentioned. Is it an aussie thing to not do it? The 2" body lift made all kinds of wonders for me.
Bigger tires fits now.
I could move my intercooler 2" up away from the hot engine with homemade spacer.
The hot exhaust sits further away from the cab floor.
Wrenching on the car is easier with less tight spaces.
Inspecting the frame is easier when you can see and reach the top of it.
Sills sit higher off the ground and frame with more clearance for sliders.
No suspension geometry altered.
I did it on a Nissan D22. I lifted it 2" for about $250. I would do it again.
I took my stock 2002 hilux sr5 2.7 petrol from Brisbane to cape York Tele track and Frenchman’s last year 2022, and it didn’t miss a beat, the only time I needed help was the soft bottom of cannibal creek.
330,000 plus klms on the clock.
We know you know how to make leafs work don't buy off the shelf stuff go a bit custom with n80s and long shocks
Question... I know they say it's recommended when fitting a bullbar you need a suspension upgrade. but is it absolutely necessary to do it.. I want a bullbar on my ranger and can get it now but can't afford a suspension upgrade.. so I need to know what will happen if I get the bullbar with no suspension upgrade?
Highway terrain tyres , your better off wheeling a 4cyl VC Commodore it's more capable than an N70 with Highway terrain tires
A Tourer lol what a joke he will just destroy it like he does with everything else he 4wd's. I think I could guarantee that in the future every panel including the roof of that Hilux will have a dint in it. 🤣🤣🤣
Really enjoyable video for me. I have a mildly modified N70 and it's good to know I've made most of the important mods you mentioned.
Still think that one of you guys need to get a Land Rover Defender (The original one) either a 90 or a 110. Don't get me wrong the Toyotas ok but they have no style, no class
You probably already know from your own research but RG Colorado rear springs are longer than the hilux springs and will give you heaps more articulation in the rear.
Maybe you shouldn't be telling people that the only way to fit bigger tyres is with a lift. When you're dealing with IFS, it's simply not true.
Really keen to see a follow up vid after the mods are made. Would love to see the exact same track tackled as a comparison. Love it 🤙
have an 08 sr hilux done as a tourer what mods would help go parabolic leafs on rear good for travel up and down as well for heavy loads, front locker to climb those inundations at a slow pace dont wreck your vehicle by bashing up its a tourer not a hill climber
Buy a jeep if u wanna keep it stock.btw it's far from stock.... already modded... 🙄🤣🤣🤣
I recently got a 08 n70 with a little bit done to it I would think a transmission cooler would be a good buy , as I’ve overheated mine a few times even with a service my auto didn’t like a long day on the tracks
Chicken in corn
How is that stock suspension? Looks LOW. My 06 even with shagged stock suspension looked higher than that.
It's a KUN26R, show me where it's a model N70 or any documentation from Toyota stating so
Simple buy a stock 1974 chevy K10 with a manual transmission NP 205 (iron horse) transfer 350 small block soid axels ect will run 1,000,000,000 miles its all iron and will never break, I have had mine in places no human should go, mordern trucks are junk computers ect just junk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Second
BOO'S BASH PLATES VIC MADE MINE AND TOOK ON A WOMBAT AT 100 K'S AND NO DAMAGE TO MY UTE JUST THE FRONT BASH PLATE WAS BENT IN 50 mm
I would just like to know, why do you guys perbecause prefer independent suspensions to solid axles?
Noice
