- The Chilling Unsolved Mystery of Ghasts in minecraft
The Minecraft Lore of Ghasts, arguably the nether most annoying mob, these flying marshmellows are a weird but a nice fit to the Minecraft aesthetic. But they're nothing too out of the ordinary. Or are they?

Minecraft Lore is very mysterious and this video is nothing short of that, Minecraft lore channels such as Wifies, RetroGaming now and much more cover many different topics. however noone has covered the unsolved mystery of ghasts in minecraft. Does the lore of minecraft go as deep as we think it does??

Should I continue doing these types of videos? I have some more ideas like this so let me know.

Ghasts are literally the only reason why the nether is dangerous, I'm fine with pigs, wither skellies, and magma slinkies, but ghasts are the reason why I shit my pants whenever I see anything white in the nether.

@@elijahsmall5873 knockback is like, the only reason why I ever fall into lava or into a pit in mc tho

What if ghasts are redstone machines that started to become sentient, and in fear that they would become dangerous, their creator banished them to the Nether?
This is a good one
This actually makes alot more sense and I kinda like it more
Another creations of the ancient builders
And maybe their purpose is to battle the wither
@Professor Beak Lore: Mumbo is the only ancient builder that survived. That's how he knows how to do redstone perfectly.
Something I forgot to clear up in the video is that when its talking about the ghasts “home” it might be talking about bringing the ghast to the players home. However, the reason I thought it was the home of the ghasts is because it says “rescue the ghast.” I should’ve cleared this up in the video that’s my bad.
Not
Actually, someone elsw did a theory, and they said the same thing
I was thinking the EXACT same thing!
Honestly what might be the idea is that you kill them to release their soul back to the overworld instead of the nether
Although in the description of the advancement, it says "Rescue" and not take, so this still holds up the theory.
“Flying marshmallows” that just makes even more adorable 😭 💕
Don’t let them fool you 😳
Flying Marshmallows that make cat noises... 😍

What if the humans that was in the ghast was already dead, and their lingering souls was the only thing that is powering it? A collective of souls in pain, wanting only to return to the overworld where they believe their friends would find a way to help them since it's probably around this time that studies in resurrecting the dead was still being made. However unbeknownst to these people that time has long gone and their only wish now is for their souls to be freed from the cage that is that ghast.
That’s depressing
I like this one too
@@Spdsyt glad you liked this little addon to your video, I used some details from other theories regarding minecraft to make this one specifically those revolving around souls
This makes sense cuz ghast is the only mob who cries
Yeah, souls make sense. It's been repeatedly proven souls play a large part in the lore of minecraft, especially in Dungeons. It's also proven that souls can power mechanical devices. Look at the Harvester, or Corrupted Beacon from Dungeons. This is a very likely theory.
Ghasts have to be native to the nether. All other nether native mobs are immune to fire and so are ghasts. I believe the wording on the uneasy alliance achievement are more referring to the player. Bringing it home means bringing it to _your_ home not the ghasts. Same with the word rescue the ghast clearly doesn’t like being in the nether due to it constantly crying so taking them to the overworld would obviously be something a ghast would want. Ghasts and striders also look very similar and are probably related debunking the theory that they have to be native to the overworld as striders are very much not adapted to the overworld with their coloration and the fact that they need high temperatures to survive.
I definitely agree with you with the wording of the advancement.
what about piglin?
@@neraisan6097 What about them?
@@sboy2044 i mean as he said creature on nature must be native to nether right but what about piglin tho they burn in lava and they fight w skeleton
@@neraisan6097 While you do have a point, what does them fighting wither skeletons have to with them not being native?
I think the ghast is being tortured and you bringing it back to the overworld from "hell" free's it's soul to no longer be eternally tortured.
my theory : since you watched retrogaming's video, you know the theory of the ancient race of builders that once ruled the over then conquered the nether before being chased to the end , my theory is that the ghasts were creatures in the over world before being captured and enslaved to work in the nether , the ghasts were reluctant to follow the cruel builders but they were surgically enhanced to protect the builders from the dangers of the nether while also being farmed for their ghast tears but after the builders went extinct the machinery wore down and the ghasts are free to attack the player ,who reminds them of their torture, they cry and scream at the player to take them home ,but once that happens they are just killed again.
This one is probably the best one so far
so you mean, it's us who captured ghast and enslaved them, basically our ancestors.
they used ghast to protect theirselves in the nether, they did that by attaching a machinery or some sort inside the ghast so that they wouldn't attack them and instead protect them.
as time passes, our ancestors got extinct, and the machinery inside ghasts worn down.
they are now free from slavery. but still can't get back to the overworld as they can't do that themselves.
and so as the new generation of players, basically us, entered the nether,
ghast see us and reminds them all those things that were did to them. by our ancestors. that's why they're angry at players.
the achievement just adds more sense to it. since ghasts can't return to overworld by themselves, they need thesame creatures who bring them there to bring them back in their home. us, humans or players.
it's reason why ghast are very angry once they see a player, and cries all the time.
I have another theory, basically thesame to this one, but ghast aren't ghast. ghast are thesame creatures as us. but as time passes in nether, they transformed into ghast and gain an ability to throw fireballs. that's why their named ghast, just little different from the word 'ghost'.
As more as i am reading the comment section i getting more and more confuse
@@twitzmixx8374 cool theory in last one!
Yes but game theory made the ancient builder theory
Something tells me they are one of the few mobs in the nether that are actually biologicaly alive. I’ve always gotten the feeling that that was the case with them. They were like a fleshy play on spirits. As for why it’s crying, from what I’ve read I’m pretty sure that’s supposed to be used to attract prey.
I would also like to add that the advancement that is made by bringing a ghast to the overworld to later kill it could simply be using the words “bring back home” in reference to the player’s home rather than our pale air balloon friend’s.
Fleshy jellyfish spirits the size of tanks... that's terrifying beyond compare. Thanks for the tripfood!! See ya on the other side ^.^

i think they are player / human souls as you compared the nether to hell and they look like ghosts n cry all the time that sounds like a soul in hell to me, also explains why the overworld is their home
True but why are their ghosts so large?
@@elijahsmall5873 i think thats why they fly slowly-
@@elijahsmall5873 they could be really giant ghost or maybe a bunch of ghost combine that's why there are different types of cries and screams
Yea. I think too
" that sounds like a soul in hell to me" HOW WOULD YOU KNOW THAT?
Gosh, Game Theory needs to step up their game!
I wish I could compare to game theory!, thanks tho :)
I agree. Game Theory DOES need to step up their game…. *theory*
I'm personally convinced that they are multiple damned souls clustered into one entity, explaining their numbers in soul sand valleys.
exactly what i was thinking
One thing you didn't mention, the advancement description that says to bring it safely home could also refer to your home. As in bring it safely back to your home. The tears are also not completely translucent, they have a somewhat greyish/blue color. Looking at something like WD-40 oil, the tears could actually be oil. Which would fit in with them being mechanical.
There’s a baby version of a ghast and it’s translucent. I just think they’re souls of the damned. Souls are in humans and like you said, humans come from the overworld. And a spirit or soul crying seems about right so ghasts might just be clusters of damned souls, meshed together . Like a big fluffy marshmallow :).
I honestly think that the ghasts were supposed to protect something in the overworld I think they were built by humans to protect something special and maybe that special thing is gone now or maybe the humans went to the nether and took the ghasts with them to protect them and they all died there and maybe that's why the ghasts are stuck there
I think the simplest explanation is true. They are weeping ghost maybe villagers (humans) or players in Hell. The ghast machine graphic is probably just something they came up with cuz in-game there are no indication of Ghasts being machines. Plus a floating ghost just makes better sense than a possessed machine.
They wouldn't create a book about the lore of minecraft and then just say they lied because they dident have ideas
They may have been tortured souls that were trapped into the nether and were forced to evolve and breed and seem to be octopus or squid like with 9 tentacles and are translucent as baby’s just like some baby cephalopods
@@ctrl5274 no
I’ve always thought they were living creatures with strong ties to the undead. Perhaps they’re related to striders? They both have a cube body, a big mouth, tendrils and a resistance to fire

I think ghasts used to be passive creatures in the over world, until they were banished to the nether for scaring people. They started to evolve so they could defend there selves. They are still upset about it and that's why they fire fireballs at the player
Matpat needs to see this! ive always felt the ghasts were off. matpat needs to try to fit this into his lore theories.
perhaps they were defense for nether fortresses, then abandoned by the ancient civilization in favor of advancement?
I think you’re on the right track with humans being trapped inside the ghasts. I think that it’s souls trapped in the ghasts. In matpat’s minecraft lore theories he always talks about soul power so maybe ghasts are robots with souls powering them like fnaf or something

I feel so bad for these cute ghasts
MC dungeons:
“I beg to differ”
Looking at the ghast as it's shooting it's fireballs, It's face is like a dispenser/dropper which makes sense with the whole mechanical machine thing, but I personally think they're sad innocent creatures flying around the nether.
Such an underrated channel.. you deserve many subs my guy
Duuude your underrated your content is amazing
Unbelievably underrated
My theory is that ghasts are remnants of minecraft ancestors (previous players) that are trap inside the nether crying begging to remove them from the netherworld
Quality vids keep up the work!
I honestly think ghasts are related biologically to the strider as both of them are just cubes with big faces on them, this is supported by the fact that in early models for the strider there are plenty that look very similar to the ghast so there is clearly some relation between the two. And also as a bit of speculation on my part I think the reason for the ghost like appearance and their abundance in the soulsand valley is because they reap the trapped spirits inside of the sand as power which is what gives their tears their healing property's I also think they might have gotten their ghost like appearance to camoflauge with the lost souls in the valley.
Striders and Ghasts being related makes a lot of sense. Like you said, they are both cubes with faces on them. But more importantly, they both make sad faces. Perhaps their common ancestor split between eating warped fungi and feeding off soul power. That could be why Ghast look like ghosts, but are not classified as undead mobs.
Me when I watch this: -yeets sword- IMA HUG YA GHAST
What if the ghast tears keep the brain undamaged and thats why you can make healing potions with it?
Well I have a theory about a few of the mobs in the nether, that being they might represent the 9 circles of hell. Piglins represent greed by selfishly wanting any gold they find, blaze represent violence by trapping them in an eternal prison behind bars, ghasts represent anger, being forced to now live in a firey chaotic place. The others I still have no idea.
I can't remember the last time a ghast caused any more than a mild inconvenience to me in minecraft. The mild inconvenience being that they're usually above lava which means I can rarely ever get ghast tears. Not that I've ever needed regeneration potions.
I love ghast cry 5 and 6 because it makes them sound like Marge Simpson
I think the ghasts are mechanical yes but powered by souls, just like how souls are used as energy in mc dungeons and other mobs like the warden. Bringing the ghast into the overworld then killing it sets the souls free
I love how this guy called ghast flying marshmallows but anyways thanks for your hard work for explaining this for few minutes...
I took ghasts to be some sort of soul banished to the nether-thats why you find them so often in soul sand valleys. Taking the ghast to the overworld and killing it is freeing whatever is trapped inside the ghast from the nether

How are you so underaited-
Aren’t ghasts’s home supposed to belong in braains?
ghasts are definitely native to juke or die
I have always thought that Ghasts were some sort of cursed souls that ended up in the Nether after death or sth like that and that's why they are miserable.
When my brothers and I were younger, we loved theorizing about the Nether. My favorite theory we all believed was that each Nether mob was a dead Overworld mob. It’s probably pretty easy to see why given we all compare the Nether to Hell. We had a few things we considered confirmed in our theory. Magma cubes were dead slimes, Gasts were dead creepers, Wither skeletons were, of course, dead skeletons, et cetera. We decided that zombie pigmen were dead villagers for whatever reason, and my personal favorite, that Blazes were other dead players.
Ronance is a good song for this! Like your music choice
I can’t believe this doesn’t have a lot of views
1:48
Also the use of the word "rescue" implying it's there against it's will
Very compelling evidence but the question is HOW did they become the ghast good theory 👌
my theory is that they were harmless and only lived in the highest of the skys but for some reason humans banished them into the nether and thats why they only attack the player
Eckharts ladder would like to know your location lol, nice intro song
Great theory! Keep it up!
I have something to add to the theory: What if the ghasts are indeed machines that were scrapped in the nether and the souls start to inhabit the machine in attempts to get back home.
Hence, why they would ALWAYS spawn in the Soulsand Valley.
Maybe rescuing them and then killing them was a way to say that you gave them one last look of the overworld before freeing their souls?

Good work
the first version of ghast used to spawn near your nether portal in the over world , so thats the reason why the achievement says that return it to its home safely
Maybe ghasts used to be passive and nice creatures, floating around in the over world, they looked much different, and they where banished by someone… sent to the nether for eternity, that’s why it attacks players, because a player like creature banished them to the nether.
You make a very interesting point
I think they might be a fusion of nether items, some redstone for some reason and a human soul
my thought about this will make it sorta fit in with matpats Minecraft theories theor. so for the people that didnt die trying to survive in the nether decided to leave their nether base(but stay in the nether instead of trying to find more dimensions) and using the quartz that they can find in the area they make a outer shell to protect the inside of a machine that they made that can make them fly around and shoot fire balls at other people or creatures they find to be dangerous and i guess to explore the nether better, they forgot to make it where they can exit the machine, so because they couldnt exit the ghast their souls became fused with the ghast machine
I noticed the use of the word "rescue", and thought something similar- Perhaps ghasts are ghosts of some sort, the souls of the damned forced to suffer in the Nether, minecraft's "hell", for eternity, unless a player killed them.
Ghast Gameplay: haha weee floating marshmallow
Ghast Lore:
Ok like the vid but why dose this give me chills at night?
When he said there's more to the that than a flying marshmallow trying to trap you I loki almost burst into laughter
If I remember right, there is unused in game ghast sound called "ghast affectionate scream" in it's filed
SUCH DEEP THOUGHTS!!!!! AWESOME!!
Here is my theory: Ghasts are native to the nether, especially soul sand valleys. Ghasts are an undead mob that is somehow related to soul sand, whether they are souls themselves or supervise the soul sand, they especially want you to go into the soul sand as you might just have the same type of soul found in soul sand. They are named ghasts because of their constant crying and their somewhat ghost resemblance.
damn this video just went to history channel after midnight real quick lol
Wow, nothing to say we got soo deeper.. you have a smart brain.
Well there you go, and now its no more unsolved, you solved it.
Did you forget the fact that Ghast Tear also used for End Crystal. There will be a much theory around that.
I always just thought it meant home as in your home, like if you find a stray dog, and you say you brought it safely home to your house, you aren't referring to the dog, but your own home.
My theory is that ghast are just ghosts. They used to be humans, but when they died the were banished to hell. I think they are basically just spirits of people that went to hell because they did something bad. And they are crying because they want to go back to the over world, and they are angry that they are in hell so they take out their anger on players. Or maybe it's that when you die in nether, you go back to the over world. Maybe they are trying to show a sign, to tell us not to come to the nether?
Bro used resonance this is so gooood
That's probably be why I have seen huge broken portals.
i think the ghast was a manufactured guard for the nether fortresses (made in the overworld to prepare for the nether), much like how there are guardians for the ocean monuments, iron golems for villages, and now the warden for the stronghold (kind of). all of those their goals remain, there is a structure left for them to protect, but for the ghast almost all of the fortresses are damn near destroyed, leaving them with nothing. when the builders fled back to the overworld and later the end they left the ghast behind, and with such a massive computer you'd wonder if they had a consciousness, the purpose of the massive computer was probably to help it identify threats and how to combat them. however seeing as they are in the nether and constantly around souls and soul energy it would make sense if it had obsorbed some of it allowing them to feel or think, making them sad and lonely wanting to be free from the nether.
My theory is that something created ghasts as machines, however they got put of control, and were thus banished to the nether.
From the illigers, the master race before us that built all the generated structures to the simple ability of making life from stacking blocks
The concept of putting life into inanimate objects isn't new in the game, so maybe ghasts (which look a lot like ghosts) are just a prototype of that that didn't pan out as well but still works
I just realized the ghast cry sounds are just sounded like a purring cat but in a high pitch.
Game theory would be damned about this
Good video, thank you. Could the Ghast be related to the Stridor?
Intro music is Resonance by Home
Outro music is Native by Home again for anyone wondering
I think you should put the music in the description to give some credit anyway,
it's 10 seconds of work...
Give that VA cat a raise
My idea is that the nether is radioactive. So in order for the ghast to operate properly it has to funnel nether radiation into a chamber that can later be shot out. This obviously hurts cause they’re spitting fire basically so that’s why they scream. The main reason I had this idea is cause when you enter a basalt delta you hear a Geiger counter showing that there is radioactive elements in the area.
Ghast lore goes hard
