    Tip 4, use a tie dye approach if you want greater control. Isolate the main coloured areas and dye. Then dry. Isolate the overlap area between main colours for pretty transition, then dye those and dry. Great fun, thank you for your video.

    If you want to wind a long hank and do not have access to a winder, place two chairs back to back. Create a loop of the desired length of yarn and place it over the two backs. Now move the two chairs apart until the loop yarn is stretched (not tightly) between them. If there is a likelihood of the chairs moving place a weight on the seat of each chair to keep them stable. Now you can neatly wind your yarn skeins with confidence between the two chair backs. After tying the yarn stabilizers, move the two chairs together and lift off your long hank.

      Another super fantastic tip! I often use this type of method to unravel my super long hanks if I dn't feel like setting the warping board back up.

    Great success (in my view)! I like your warping board. I weave more than I knit and I made one myself some time ago. I didn't think about using railing wood for that, good idea you had. It's good also that you found a solution about an efficient way to assemble / disassemble it. When a make a warp for weaving, I will use a guide / leader thread which will help me form the path of the warp on the board. Since you need a circular path instead on a linear one as for weaving, I think it may help you to decide where the yarn will go. The way you put the yarn on the board at the end of the video looks more adapted to what will be useful for you. Happy dyeing!

    For the side rails, to prevent them twisting in, you could get a smaller dowel size, like a quarter inch or so, drill a hole through those top dowels while they're in place and then put the smaller dowel in to create a cross. This should keep it secure to prevent twisting with tension.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      We thought about doing something like that. Thankfully, since we're not perfect wood workers the dowels aren't in at perfect angles so it holds things tight pretty well.

      Absolutely! I would probably unwind a few yards at a time and then wind onto the cake. I'm not sure if it would pull off directly if that makes sense.
      I prefer to store yarn in skeins versus cakes, but if the sponsor had asked me to cake up the yarn then I might have gone directly to a cake. (Of course, maybe not since I might want to show the skein for the video.... but this is a case where I might do things differently if I wasn't filming.)

    Great job. QUESTION PLEASE. Love that you make your own tools like the warping board. Very cool. Great yarn. Where do you learn how long the lengths need to be for self stripping yarn? How do you know what the yarn will look like and how the stripes will go/. Crazy, it must be mathematics, where I’m good as long and only if I know how to enter the calculation into the calculator to get correct answer. THANKS IN ADVANCE. My three colors would be two type of browns one dark one lighter maybe beige and a beautiful light blue.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому +1

      This is a great question! I think there is some trial and error since it depends on how wide you want the stripes to be. The best way to calculate is to cast on and knit at the gauge you would use for socks. Unravel and measure the length of yarn. Multiply this length by the number of rounds you want the stripe to be, and how many stripes total. I've found that ~3-4 yards of bare yarn per color gives a nice sized stripe.
      There are people who can give MUCH better recommendations on this than I can. I'm still figuring this out myself!

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      Self striping yarn is a lot more work than other types of colorways. Gradients can be a lot of work, too. It takes a similar amount of time to wind a long skein as it does to crank a blank I think. Maybe the blank is a bit longer. I didn't time myself doing this, but I watched some UA-cam videos while I worked. :D

    What a gorgeous hank!
    What exactly is difference between this warping board thing ( that I have no idea what it actually is lol) and using a yarn swift to wind and hank up a skein of yarn 🧶. ??
    Thank u for sharing.
    Could u please show us how to put & actually show how u tie / make the ties the ties in the wound hank of yarn where the hank won’t come apart or tangle? ☺️

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому +1

      Kriss - I set such a bad example of adding ties to yarn. Normally I just add a reusable nylon zip tie and call it a day. In this video I did add some butterfly ties, but you could do that on a smaller skein as well. I hope to make a dedicated video on preparing a skein for dyeing at some point.
      The warping board is a tool that weavers use to make really really long lengths of yarn that they use for the warp of fabric, scarves, etc. Dyers can find these useful to make skeins longer than they might be able to from (for example) having two chairs super far apart in a dining room. I haven't filmed a proper tutorial with my warping board because I'm still practicing on how to use it myself. It is fun and useful, though.
      The warping board creates a skein that is WAY too big to fit on a swift - which usually works well for skeins 1-2 yards in diameter. Some people like to reskein things so they can be a consistant length.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому

      This is a great question - unfortunately I think it would be hard for me to do because I'm not 100% sure how I made the error. I think I must have flipped direction at some point when winding. I would say the best advice is to make decisions when turning to always go over the peg (for example) and try to maintain that consistency.

    Hi Rebecca! These 3 colors are stunning together! 😍
    I'm wondering if you could possibly make a video sometime about your suggestions for crafters wanting to start selling their goods online? Legality-wise is what somewhat concerns me. I.E.: When is it required (or is it) to obtain a business license or create an LLC before selling online? What information is required to be on labeling for the products? I've Googled until my eyes crossed and I'm not finding black-and-white answers for selling online. Sorry for all the bombarding questions! 😬 LOVE your videos! ♥️

    Oh Rebecca this was awesome. I can't believe I asked about this on Instagram the night before it came out. Your board is great but how could you not film everything you silly goose lol. I'm sure it will be fine. The yarn is beautiful! Great great job! One thing I'm trying to understand is how the mistake happened. Is it from where the yarn is tied together wasn't one color? I got confused there. I'm sure Ann can cut it out if she likes so know frets. 5 stars on this one!

      I think when I was starting the vlog I got distracted working with Keith. I had a deadline for a collaboration so we had to get it done. I know I didn't film the glueing step but I think I can fill in the pieces that I didn't show.
      It was so easy to make. It is not that much cheaper than purchasing a warping board, but Dyer Supplier really wanted me to try to make one myself. I might have tried PVC pipe but that would have gotten so expensive so fast. The nice thing with this one is that I can go SO MUCH longer than I have already and that isn't going to be any harder.

      I need to do a proper warping board tutorial, for sure, though.

      @@tattercandy you want a large loop so you have enough space for the stripe to be long. I've wrapped yarn around two chairs spread out or used a super long pvc pipe niddy noddy (see Dyepot weekly 100)

    it would be cool to dye mini skeins inside of plastic easter eggs

      That's a cute idea! Most of the eggs that I have on hand have some small holes in them, but maybe it could be used for steaming? I'm not sure if the plastic would melt or not, but if the plastic could hold up to steam it could be a nice plastic wrap alternative for minis.

    Gynx yarns (witch is no more) an might be called Gynx handmade here on UA-cam has a wrapping tutorial that will help you all the yarn in the correct order. If anyone is looking for a good video to watch. I believe it’s in with her dyeing yarn tutorials.
    Beautiful Rebecca
    Also with my board I had my husband to cut out the corner end so I could lay the 2 prices flush with each other an used wing nuts.

      Unfortunately, is currently sold out - but you should be able to still check out the listing through the video description. (In my etsy shop: chemknitscreations.etsy.com/)
      I normally have a certain number of slots open at any given time and I release new slots as I finish videos. Right now I've reduced the number of videos that I am working on at a time since my time to film is much more limited. :(

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому +1

      Great question! it is a device like a frame with a lot of pegs that weavers use to create the warp - or the long strands on the loop when they make a woven fabric. Dyers use this to make super long skeins for self striping and gradient type projects.

    You keep saying mistake. It is a happy accident that is always a risk when dying yarn this way.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      You're right, it is a happy accident! I was sad because I hoped that I could correct it with the dyeing. If I did a 2 strip colorway then it would have been invisible. BUT our sponsor is excited for the happy accident.
