    Excellent video! I'm not a dyer, but I really enjoy learning about the process through your videos. This one greatly appealed to me as a retired "techie". I love the precision of this system as a means of documenting and scaling a dye process. It also helps that I have always been somewhat obsessed with describing and "formula-izing" processes with spreadsheets and such. Alanna created an amazing tool for you folks.

      I've been holding back on dyeing colors for some larger projects I want to knit - so this is a fun way for me to think about getting the colors perfect before doing 400-600 g of yarn in a color. :D

      I love love love doing mini gradients like this. I realized it would be useful to show how you can use the minis also to get the color that you want (while making an awesome gradient at the same time.)

    Great information. Do you always try out color combinations on mini skeins?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому

      Not always, but sometimes. For videos, it is useful to use minis because I can process more colors at once. It can also be more economical to test on minis than full skeins. I also just enjoy making miniskein fade sets a lot!

    80ml dye stock for a 4% depth of shade on 20g of yarn. So 400ml of 1% dye stock solution for 100g of yarn? And to make 400ml of 1% dye stock, you’d need 4 grams of dye and 400ml water? (I hate math.) When trying to create solids, or barely-tonals, it seems almost impossible to work with any dye before doing the type of experiment you did here. DOS seems to vary so much from color to color. Thanks for this clear demonstration!!!

    Can you tell us about the picture behind you on the wall under the stairs? Is it a family collage, vacation pictures, or something else?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому +4

      Absolutely! It is a collage of selfies of me & Keith + some photos of us with friends and family. There was a program that would take a folder of photos and then arrange them to create a larger image. If you back up far enough you can see that these form a penguin. I think the only non-people images are the cakes that we made for our PhD celebrations. We made this poster for our wedding (but then never ended up using it for the actual event.) We tried to have at least one photo of everyone who was going to be at the wedding in here.

    • @dorothyyoung8231
      @dorothyyoung8231 4 роки тому

      Blech! I hate beets but my partner loves ‘em and I pickle them for him. I just throw garlic, a clove or two, mustard seed, salt, peppercorns, etc. into a jar, and the cooked beets cut in bite-size pieces, cover them with white vinegar and refrigerate them. They’re good for a month if they last that long. I often use the brine for a second and third batch of cooked beets.

    What happens with all of this yarn you dye?! It might be more economical (not to mention easier) to use 100% wool fabric pieces when you're working on these kinds of projects. You could easily sell the resultant fabric to the folks who do traditional north american rug hooking. :)

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому +1

      I have an Etsy shop! chemknitscreations.etsy.com/ Most of the yarn I dye ends up there. I agree that otherwise wool fabric would work really well for swatches.
