    • @sleepydrJ

      In the mixed powder trial, it gives me the impression that 1)the dyes do stick together when you mix them, and 2) the blue is just a lot more mobile in the water/wet wool. Speckles are kind of like little comets with both colors in the initial speck and a tail of blue migrating out. Soooo have you ever done other observations of the powders themselves? Compared size of dye particles under microscope, or done a little kitchen chromatography from a mixed dot of dye powder/paste , or of a solution of the two together? do these dye cellulose? I guess you need a situation where the dye doesn’t dye the chromatography paper... on the other hand, maybe the blue migrates farther because it doesn’t bind the wool as rapidly?

    Hi I'm new to your channel and I just wanted to say that from watching this video and your use of the mini skeins I had the idea to start putting a little mason jar with water to the side when I'm dyeing with powder to clean off my gloves; worked like a charm!! My gloves get clean and I get to save all that color goodness for a future dye project :) Really enjoying all your videos!

    Rebecca, thanks for this awesome tutorial. In the first technique where you have the hands laid out on the table and speckle with the dry dye/citric acid combos, is the yarn damp or dry? I'm wondering and trying to get my speckles not to bleed so much :)....

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому +1

      The yarn is damp. If the yarn is dry the dye won't be able to bind. You do want damp vs sopping for sharper speckles.

    Wondering if using a salt shaker for sprinkling would give a better result.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      I didn't like using a salt shaker because I felt that I dumped color in spots and got light coverage elsewhere. I prefer my fingers. BUT everyone has their own preference. :D

  • @beesleystreet

    Have you tried using a shaker? Like a salt shaker?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  3 роки тому

      I have, and honestly I prefer using my fingers. I can control where and how much dye comes out a bit better. I'm sure I could gte better with a shaker, but overall I didn't like the flow as much.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  2 роки тому

      Yes! You don't always see pure blending in a mixture, but depending on how things are coated you may.

  • @trishylala
    @trishylala 4 роки тому

    Ok I’m wondering if some dyes are holding just enough moisture that they will combine. For instance The way that dharma true black is a finer powder that doesn’t clump vs dharma radioactive that clumps (I am guessing there is more moisture in radioactive) and maybe the way citric acid is sticky it also has just enough moisture to combine powders.
    I wonder if two of the fine powder dyes that don’t clump like dharma true black and dharma fluorescent fuchsia would combine less.
    Omg I am so grateful for this experiment!! I had put together a mix of dry dyes into a shaker and was so disappointed it came out looking combined.
    But This is cool info because now i know I’m not crazy lol and I have several new speckle colors based on whether I use them separately or mixed.
    Awesome video

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      I wonder about moisture now, too! Too bad that would be harder for me to measure/control! This is a video that has been in my head for a long time. I feel so much better and have a better understanding of my speckle mixtures!

  • @aquinna
    @aquinna 4 роки тому

    Dharma Deep Magenta 411 is an acid dye, while Dharma True Turquoise 424 is a direct dye (which still can be used to dye protein fibers), but I wonder if that affected the experiment at all? Just an interesting side note; great video.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      Hmmm... even in the acid dye collection? I wasn't aware of that. I honestly don't know much about commercial pigments.

    Couldn't you have just used a small pepper shaker instead of your fingers to literally get a true speckled look??

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  4 роки тому

      Great question! I actually find salt/pepper shakers make it harder for me to control where hte dye goes. I end up with larger masses versus a light dusting. So this works a bit better for me personally. :D
