- ACK! I forgot to say: please make sure to secure your yarn loop in something like a pillowcase (tie it closed with a knot) or close-able cloth bag before spinning it in your washing machine. SUPER IMPORTANT!!
It's really fun to dye self striping yarn. You don't need any special equipment - just a little patience. This class covers designing your stripes, preparing your yarn, and dyeing it.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR CLASS WORK WITH ME! Tag me on Instagram @knitspinfarm. I'd love to see your sketches, your dyeing, and your socks!
Thank you for this information, you are a very good teacher and pleasant to listen, you explain things well. I have been trying to figure out the math part and you are the only person I have found to explain it. Thank you again!
A) I love you! This was humorous and didn’t trigger my perfection paralysis. And I just want to hang out with you in real life now. But not be creepy about it. And b) thank you so much for putting your knowledge out there for us.
I dye yarn using food coloring, and processes like over-dying works the same way as acid dyes. I just have to use a little more food coloring than the dye powders to get the same deep colors.
This was so good. Now to play! Thank you
My son thought it was so interesting how much work (and math) went into striping sock yarn!
Yo. Right??? I find the reward of knowing amazing knitters to be worth it.
Looks like I need to order some acid dyes! Thanks for doing this 😁
I started with small packets of dye from The Woolery. It's so fun!! When Goodwills reopen, I'll bet you'll be able to find suitable pots (even crock pots) and utensils.
Knit Spin Farm Virtual Fiber Festival you must be spying on me 🤣🤣 I’m looking up dyes now! I may have a crockpot or three in the garage... I had grand plans for this eons ago and have “collected” a couple from Goodwill.
Such valuable information! I have dyed striped socks before but I did not know how to control the size of the stripes. I am beyond happy. Be blessed,
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this! I do a little dyeing for myself and i have wanted to try self striping but felt overwhelmed by it. This video is just what I needed! I like how you used a miniature model with the cones to demonstrate. I tend to knit hats more than socks so I might do the figuring for some worsted weight striped hat yarn. Fun stuff!
This is so cool! I need to get spinning so I have some yarn to dye to try it!
Oh my goodness, thank you for this Festival and this video! I am currently spinning some undyed roving, and I can’t wait to dye it self-striping! It will be my first attempt at dying yarn and I’m already figuring out where my two chairs will go...
Well this is about the most exciting thing I've read all day! If your yarn is significantly thicker or thinner than sock yarn, I'd recommend knitting a round or two with it and measuring how long the yarn is. That general idea of 36 inches per round will vary for thicker or thinner yarns. Promise to show me pictures!!
Oh, good idea. I promise!☺️
Thanks for doing all of this for us! So very interesting and what a lot of work! I appreciate your work/time so much more than I already did and I already loved your yarn a lot!
You could use a warping board if you weave and have one to wind out your giant loop.
Yes! I was going to talk about this (it's how I make all the yarn I sell), but I got stressed thinking about the details. I don't have any weaving experience, but It's just a little different than doing a warp, right? I made a bunch of mistakes when I first started, especially when changing directions. If I can find a good video about it, I'll add the link. Thanks for watching!!
I think I’ll use my warping board - great idea! 👍🏼
@@knitspinfarm I wish I actually had a warping board, but I do have a warping peg. It is exactly like using a warping board - as opposed to doing a direct warp where you're actually looping the yarn onto the loom on one end, and then going around a warping peg. There are lots of videos on using warping boards. I'd never puzzled out how to make self-striping yarn, and now I can't wait to try it. I just need to finish spinning up some Shetland/Clun Forest cross that I have. And washing the fleece. I only washed part of it.
1 yard = 1 round what’s that in inch?
Thanks so much for this. It was wonderful! So ties keep the colors from bleeding into each other?
With acid dyes at least, when dipping the yarn in a pot, the colors don't bleed. They may creep up the wool a tiny bit - like a quarter inch. The tight ties have two important jobs. 1) to mark where the colors start and stop. 2) to keep the yarn from shifting around too much. The giant loop can become a little loosey goosey and some strands may shift a lot without the tight ties. Does that make sense?
Knit Spin Farm Virtual Fiber Festival I think so, I will let you know how it goes. I need to order supplies. Have you ever thought about putting together small kits to dye your own self- stripping socks?
