  • Check out my process in dyeing self striping yarn for socks! This is by no means the only way but today I'm sharing my method. I use acid dyes by ProChem and Jacquard, a pot (used only for dyeing), citric acid or vinegar and your favourite animal fibre bare yarn.

    Curious if you've ever wrapped and dyed more than one skein at a time? I need to make 4 skeins (for friends) of the same colors and thought wrapping them simultaneously might save time. TIA!

    Just wondering if you use the folding technique to measure out sections , you’ll get the striping but not relating to your gauge . Meaning the stripes will begin and end more randomly ? Or is it that there’s always some color mixing at change points so measuring using your gauge is no guarantee of clean color changes... thanks !

    • @KendraMakes
      @KendraMakes  5 років тому

      Hi! The width of each stripe when knitted depends on both gauge and number of stitches- so for a tight knitter who knits socks with fewer stitches instead of the knitter who likes a looser fit and has more stitches the number of rows of each colour will be different- if that makes sense and answers your question

    Did you find directions online for building the warping mill?

      No, my husband just put it together from looking at pictures online.

    very nice but most of us have the dilemma of negotiating this without a warp board; some of this is helpful but the most important need to set up the yarn is what most of us need.

    • @KendraMakes
      @KendraMakes  6 років тому +2

      that is true, it's hard to start out! I could show how to wind around chairs which requires no equipment but is just not very efficient or true to what actually works best for me. Hope you find something that works

    I want to try my first self striper n needed to ask about length of or width of stripe. Did i hear you right that 80c is about one row of knitted socks? And what did you google to bring up that info? Thanks for your video so helpful n your hubby did great job on that mill!

    • @KendraMakes
      @KendraMakes  4 роки тому

      Here is a link that may help- this one says to allow 20” per row so if you want a 4 row stripe to allow 60”. It is variable though, depending how wide you want your stripes, how tight your gauge is, etc. Good luck with your dyeing!!

    • @ooohlaa13

      is this for sock weight yarn? I wish there were a formula, where is the link, I don't see it? Beautiful video job.@@KendraMakes

    Can you do color pooling with this method? Thanks

    • @KendraMakes
      @KendraMakes  5 років тому

      These repeats are so long it would be hard to pool unless it was like as wide as a blanket or something. With a smaller skein (even a regular sized one) you can do more pooling. Hope that helps!

    can you tell me how long your skein turned out to be after you calculated it? I tried to review your video but could not find it. Also any reason why you don't use a winder to turn into a cake? Binge-watching on your lovely playlist!!!

    • @KendraMakes
      @KendraMakes  4 роки тому

      Hi! I’m glad you found my videos. If I didn’t say in the video I don’t know how long this exact skein was since it was a few years ago now, but I typically do around 6 meters for a 4 stripe repeat but it depends how wide you want the stripes and how many stripes. As for the winding, I did not have winder yet at the time of this video! I also like being able to see the stripe colours more clearly when in a ball like this.

    So you went section by section to dye each color?This must have taken forever! Is there a way to get all the same color sections in the pot at the same time? How long did it take to cool each section down? The colors were really pretty - can you hand paint with acid dyes? You must love that warping mill instead of all the chairs!!! I am fascinated by the dyeing process, feel free to do more.

    • @KendraMakes
      @KendraMakes  6 років тому +2

      When each section is dyed it dyes all of that colour. So in this 4 colour repeat it is 4 dye baths. That is why we wind it into the circle so it groups the stripes together. Less water and yarn cools faster than larger quantities but for one skein I usually leave about half an hour of cool down in the pot and then pull it out to cool in a container so I can dye the next step. Then at the end wait until everything is completely cool to do any rinsing!

      oh, ok. Thanks for the explanation. I also liked knowing how they wind those gobstopper balls. Never occurred to me it was that simple. Those will be some pretty socks.

      you can handprint the sections, some people use a foam brush or speckling in some sections ... wish i had a warp board, will try to make one on pegboard

    Wow! I love the blue shades used.
    I don’t have all that equipment! But that was excellent! I would like to learn how to gradient dye. Any guidance on this type of dyeing?

    • @KendraMakes
      @KendraMakes  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! Yes, like anything, it's hard to pick up a new craft when you don't have equipment! And each new piece of equipment goes a long way in streamlining the process!! Right now I only have a video on how to gradient dye fabric but that's a good idea, I should do one for yarn!!
