"Do we hate it because it could be better? Or do we like it because it could be worse?" Holy shit, I had to listen to that line like 10 times in a row, because it perfectly encapsulated everything I've been feeling about Marvel after Endgame, and pretty much all of Disney Star Wars (with a few small exceptions. I like TLJ, and no one can ruin that for me. Also, season 1 of Mandalorian is one of my favorite Star Wars things period.) It's all been an endless sea of homogenized mediocrity that's simultaneously not bad enough to hate, and also not good enough to praise, it's just... there. It's not good, it's not bad, it just... is. They're too scared to fail at trying to make something exciting and new, so they choose to succeed at making something bland and forgettable instead.
Mando 1 is pretty good. It's like The Outlaw Josey Wales in space. I very much disagree with you on TLJ. Sure it had some big twists, but a twist that exists just for it's own sake, rather than to serve the story, is cheap. Literally every action taken by the heroes, or the villains, in that movie end up being completely pointless thanks to those subversions. A prime example, is Luke's force projection. The point of doing something like that, from a literary point of view, would be to serve as a distraction, whilst also keeping oneself out of harms way. However, he just dies anyway. So he may as well have just showed up in person. The reason this is a good example is because it has one twist, which serves the plot, then another twist immediately afterwards that effectively kneecaps the first twist. This kind of thing happens multiple times. Johnson is constantly stepping on his own toes in an effort to step on the audiences toe.
And they always complain that we don't like bold and different. The problem is, just because you can do new things, doesn't mean you should. Like making Luke all bastardized. It's out of his character, and stupid fans love it and think it's okay.
It's crazy how far the true reasoning(Heart) for the story of Star Wars has fallen. They say never meet your heroes, but in this case, it was what others have done to our heroes. It is a sad reality, but a truth that must be told so others may not repeat the degradations of Disney. Truly a wonderful video essay here, Bravo!
Yup. Star Wars now feels more like a massive commercial at times than a product of passion (look no further than the amount of inserts they did with the Lola robot). And regarding what you said about hope, it’s almost like the fans looking forward to the potential better days is the corporate faceless version of a toxic relationship.
This is so true and you explain this so elequently. I love what Star Wars was. Not what it is. It honestly feels like a friend that you moved on from years ago but they still live near you and are brought up often by others. Lovely work as usual. Thank you for covering this!
When it comes to the entire timeline of the franchise, I would be considered a pretty late entrant, with even the prequels a little bit before my time. Despite never really experiencing the craze personally, Star Wars was a huge part in my childhood. One of my most treasured possessions was the box set of 1-6, which would get watched through at least once a year, and the complete visual dictionary, which I could look through and be entertained for hours with the just-believable enough science fiction that went into the series. People always focus on the marketability of Star Wars, the toys and whatnot, but that never was I cared about, with probably about two lego sets and not much else. It was never a franchise for me, but more of an awe-inspiring world that I thought could bring any story to the table, make any kind of character interesting, make me cheer for any hero as much as collude with any villain. KOTOR wowed me with the same impact of storytelling, and even with the prequels being lackluster in many ways, I still loved the depth of the world and the intrigue you could see in them, and would eagerly play any game or watch any show that gave me another glimpse. Although they might have been a bit too ambitious and the writing pretty awful, the prequels were still special in how the story never left current events yet something was always happening beyond the screen, and it made the world feel real. Whether it was the Clone Wars raging in the background or political intrigue, there was always another angle to the story. While the original trilogy might not have had that same depth, the likeability of the characters, their development, and the uniquity of the trilogy made them special to me regardless. As you and many others have said, however, that charm and depth have entirely disappeared. The state of Star Wars has passed from me wondering how something off screen could have happened, how interesting it would be to see it in detail, to Disney trying to fill in those gaps themselves for the sake of filling, for another opportunity to produce a mediocre movie or show that can slap a bandaid of mediocre satisfaction over a gap that didn't need to be covered in the first place. I used to crave more content, wish for another look into the Clone Wars or the Old Republic, but at this point I've just grown callous and would be happier if they left anything and everything alone to never be touched again. The new trilogy didn't kill my love of what came before it, but the tasteless trite that I've watched killed any interest in any new content. There was no more intrigue, and I was never left wondering what was happening off screen because nothing did happen off screen. I've come to think that any intriguing narrative needs to hide something from its consumers, be that the greater implications of the story, the potential of the protagonist, something, but reveal it in a palatable way that feels natural. The saddest part of this all is that Star Wars could have all this again, and it can still have that awe that inspired so many. I enjoyed Star Wars after it was in its prime, and I still loved every minute of it. I played KOTOR for the first time after the new trilogy came out and loved it. That same inspiration is still there, but as long as Star Wars continues like it is the new content will never have that inspiration. Ahh, it feels good to rant about Star Wars.

I honestly think there was a good story that could have been told here. I use rebels as my basis for that. In rebels, Kenobi is so wise and strong that he is able to defeat Maul in one blow, purely by using his intelligence to bait him into using the same attack that killed Qui Gon. I think that there's room to tell how the Kenobi from the end of ROTS became the Kenobi from Rebels, because there is at least a little bit of a noticable difference
Exactly! And he gains this newfound wisdom along with the cosmic force powers when he trains with Qui-Gon on Tatooine. As Yoda says at the end of episode 3, this is what his path on Tatooine will be ...and THIS is the story the show should have told! How does this training happen? What is the cosmic force? What does the cosmic force feel like and how is it different from the living force? Are there mental challenges? Who are the Whills and what is their part in Obi-Wan learning to become a force ghost? Do the Whills accept Jedi as immortal beings just like that or are they reluctant at first and maybe try to interfere? Literally so much potential for a mind-blowing show and story!
@@jimi4985 Yeah, but that would be something for invested fans, not something for Joe Plumber and his dipshit kids to watch. It would also make a better book than a TV show. And yes, I want to read that book, too.
Late to the discussion but the Obi Wan Kenobi legends novel did that very well, but guess who decided to decanonize it? …. You already know the answer haha
My dad pointed out something really important to me tho, with Star Wars, we used to get one thing every 5-10 years. Now we get multiple things every year. So even if there is only a good project every 5 years that is more than we used to get.
I usually never care about edits when it comes to UA-cam videos but the ones in this video were genuinely amazing and even beautiful at some parts. Great job and great video!
You are so good, Nutsa! Interestingly put together, great points and you can barely even tell that English isn‘t your main language. Your vids are always a treat.
When i was like, twelve, I'd think to myself: "Why isn't there any new star wars movies?" This was in like, 2009 or so, and I was still an optimistic youngin' who loved expanded media stuff and always wondered where it can go next. Now, as an embittered twenty-something, It's pretty draining on the soul to see stuff id been enamoured with in my youth become these weird, hollow, paint by numbers products. If you woulda told me 10 years ago, that "Somehow Palpatine returned." I'd laugh it off as lazy. Too bad lazy is the go to these days.
Star Wars is best when it takes itself seriously, keeps comic relief to a minimum, and tackles profound ideas. Not to say that it can't be fun. Just don't make it stupid.
Excellent video! It was well done! Personally, I think Star Wars is on life support. I just love everything that Lucas did, before he sold Star Wars. I believe that the Mandalorian was an anomaly, as far as, Disney's Star Wars producing good content. All that said, your video was put to gather nicely and it's done succinct and in a concise way. Also, your breakdowns are very strong too! Keep up the good work! Looking forward to your future projects. Finally, I hope things are better for you personally.
I liked the book of boba fett, although the story wasnt too complex, and it felt a little out of wack with boba's character, it was still enjoyable to watch and had an engaging plot. Kenobi is just absolutely terrible, the whole plot is basically just centered around how a 10 year old princess leia outsmarts literally everyone she comes in contact with, along with some obi wan to make sure the people are getting what the title says. Obviously its a bit deeper than that, but I couldn't get myself to finish the show, every character interaction is so void and predictable its painful to watch. I loved star wars growing up, but after this and the prequels it's dead to me.
It's interesting to me that the shows I still enjoy are the ones not rooted in the Disney side of things. Clone Wars S7, Bad Batch, Rebels, all have their roots in the pre-Disney era. They all felt like they were still expanding the world, characters, keeping star wars feeling vast. Rebels delved into cosmic topics and the last season in particular made the Force feel so vast and unknowable. Bad Batch and S7 both are building on a show that made the clone Wars feel so massive and emotional, yet made time to make the scope just keep expanding over and over again. I think those shows really capture what Kenobi doesn't, and your simple yet clever points really made me realize that. Happy to have found you, eager to see more!
Fantastic video. Video essays on Star Wars are a dime a dozen, sometimes going on for an hour or more. But in 15 minutes you managed to perfectly describe the core of the issue the franchise is suffering from using specific example as a case study. Well done.
I think my biggest takeaway from not just SW and Marvel but a lot of entertainment companies in general is the fact that they feel the need to produce so much "Content" now that they have 55 shows or movies coming out in a single year or two. Seriously Disney has at least 3 to 4 new SW shows coming out this year through next year and Marvel at least 3 new shows coming out this year through next year. The problem is these companies are doing this not just because they want to make as much money as possible, but also because they are trying to shield themselves from any criticism for how bad the shows and movies they make actually are. The reaction of the fanbase proves it. Especially when it comes to Disney. Ever since the Mandalorian SW has been under the idea that "Its at its best" and people are praising some of it as "The best SW content ever." BUT that's what they ALWAYS say and they completely forget about it afterwards, they completely forget about the constant pattern of bland, terribly written and terribly executed shows that continue to spew out of this figurative sludge pipe. As long as people continue to praise Disney and give themselves the impression that SW is as good as it was when the OT an PT were around and as long as they forget the pattern of quantity over quality then we wont ever get any real stories of real quality, because its AAAALLLL about the next thing, content and more content and moooooore content. Let the sludge flow continue...
This is it! This is a fantastic summary of the frustration I have been feeling towards my favorite franchise in existence for years now. Star Wars was my life as a kid, and now that I'm in my 30s watching it's decline is so disheartening. Good summary.
I adore the show; there is so much meaning and depth to it... like when (spoiler alert!) Vader stabs Reeva, and it flashes back on how he had stabbed her before, like that, when she was a child, and she survived. It contrast how he wounded her before, grievously, and now has done so again - but then the inquisitor said "Revenge does wonders for the will to live" and she survives, again! Because she is still driven by revenge! Anyway, I am a heart surgeon, lost ten people this week... guess they had nobody they wanted revenge on? Strange, but also not my fault...
Maul literally did the same thing and nobody complained, the dude got cut in half and survived. Also, lightsabers have thin blades so it is entirely possible it missed anything vital.
@@theechoproject899 no its not possible, the lightsaber burns the body. Also a lot of people complained about maul, and its not because it happened one time, that the mistake should be allowed to repeat again, it shouldnt.
@@rodrigor.2847 Palpatine already said, before anyone survived the wound, "The dark side is a pathway to many abilities, some consider to be unnatural." if you want to argue with George Lucas canon, go ahead. George was also the one who approved bringing him back, so Reva surviving is already an established thing in-universe. it may not make a lot of sense, but it was a thing long before Disney took over.
Just got around to this one. Great video! As always, Nutsa is a breath of fresh air in this logic devoid environment. Personally, I just recently had a conversation about Kenobi and I think you have expressed perfectly what my friend said with your description that the show was like a glass half full/half empty. I think creative story telling has been largely lost in recent years in the film industry. I have found that I like Hollywood movies from around the 90s the most. I think movies after this point focused more on flashy technology than good and creative story telling. I think this phenomenon of valuing technology over things that are more personable and human has traversed to many industries. For instance, I talked with a buddy of mine who just got married and he said that the wedding photographer had great lighting and colors for the photos, but he didn't position people in the photo to make the photo a good group composition that makes the people themselves just look good. To sum up: Entertainment money machine goes brrrr 💵. Creativity stonks and real humans things stonks go down↘️
I'm so thrilled that I found this channel. Nutsa puts into words the vague feeling I get when watching entertainment entities feed on old ideas like carrion.
This should have a million views easy. The production and editing are top notch, and every point is made clear and concise. Plus, now I can't get that Vader theme ditty out of my head. 😄
Awesome vid. I’d also add that entertainment isn’t what it used to be in general. It seems more like a bunch of cool visuals tied together by some random plot than cool visuals built around a captivating idea.
I just have to say that you’re extremely talented in video making. It’s not often am watching a UA-cam video and stop to think… holy shit this looks visually amazing. It’s absolutely criminal that you don’t get more views based on the quality of you’re content.
i love how the intros are like darth vader being super dark and edgy sitting at his cool throne and shit and then your super sweet calm and funny voice starts playing
As much as it pains me to finally say that I’ve lost faith in anyone but Dave Filoni when it comes to this series, I burst out loud laughing at the titles of each part. They were just all memes and I love them for it.
I'd put Bad Batch up there with the very few good things we have but yeah I'm a bit biased, great video. The passion of one great man making a franchise because he loves it is looooong gone.
I’ll be interested to see how Bad Batch season 2 goes! Season 1 was good but I somehow still feel like it’s too early to tell how it’ll go. One thing Bad Batch has going for it is that we don’t know the fates of almost ANY of the characters (save side characters like Rex) so there’s a lot of potential there
Would love to hear you comment on Andor next. It seems the spin-offs get a bit more love for their creative direction in the fact they don’t have to adhere to previous character development. Great video! Keep them coming!
I like to reflect on the idea of going back in time to the 2000s, and telling my past self that in the future there will be a live action Star Wars show with a movie-level budget, starring Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan Kenobi, and another show starring Boba Fett. The cruel irony... certainly a monkey's paw scenario if there ever was one.
You have hit the nail right on it's head when it comes to the problems with Star Wars now. Disney is so focused on the quantity that it's forgotten about the quality of the story and characters.
great watch! coherent, good points, great editing, just good stuff all round. I think you captured the heart of the problem and this video is what I'll probably show my friends when they ask me why I've been disillusioned with star wars (was a bit sad to see Howzer there because I love TBB but I have to admit the show isn't immune to fan service and repetitiveness. still think it had more soul than any of the live action series)
Great Essay! you really sum up my feelings on this Show. Also the editing is TOP TIER!I Plan to do Film Essays myself in Beat Future & you really inspired me! :) A problem I also have with the Show „Is Obiwan pointless?“ as we have another Prequel to Anakin & Leia & Luke Even tho we know how the Skywalker Saga ends. So no matter how Good it would have been it leaves à bitter Taste for me as we know all of them die in the end Anyway. The Last Skywalker didnt Even got a Chance to confront Palpatine for what he has done to his Family. I love How TLJ seems the only Disney Star Wars Film That tried to move forward But then we know what came Next....
I can't help but mention that amount of editing and soul you put in this 15 minute video is like thousand times of the same things put in Kenobi. Cheers.
The Grand Inquisitor said before he died that: “There are some things… far worse than death.” And let go of the ledge and died which I think is the best line from SW rebels bc it represents how we all feel about current SW
Oooohhh my gooossshhh I remember vader! The imperial March! I remember that!😱😱👏👏. But seriously great video. You touched on the issues perfectly. I wish more people would wake up and see that the franchise is dead, no matter how many flashy lights or big actors they bring in. Hope you are doing well💙👌😎
Dude, your videos are some of the most well edited ive seen in ages. Honestly thought you had millions of subs, definitely what i expected from the video quality
I think there's a bit of a civil war going on within Lucasfilm. It's why the writing and plot points within Kenobi swing so widely between hot steaming garbage that undermines the best parts of Obi-wan and messes with the continuity (looking at you, trenchcoat scene), and incredibly emotionally impactful plot points that laser-focus in on the heartbreak experienced by Obi-wan losing his best friend to the monster that friend became. Seriously, the duel was the best part of the entire show: "Anakin's gone. I am what remains." "You didn't fail anakin. I killed him."
Kenobi should've been a cakewalk. Instead, it made legions of people that were still holding on finally give up the hope that Star Wars is constantly claiming to stand for.

The writing in the wall was there when sagas became "franchises"
Came from EFAP, stayed for the high quality Edit. Nice work!
Better Call Saul proved that you can tell a great story even if you know the fates of (most of) the characters.
Better Call Saul is better than most, yes. But it had flaws of its own which aren’t mentioned that frequently.
@@SardonicJosh ¡.I hope you can check patterson Cut Obi Wan I know the series can`t be fixed but it makes it enjoyable with some clever edits.
If it makes you feel any better the movie that did come out in 2008 is the only reason we get anything good out of Star Wars
The editing on this is phenomenal, amazing job!
Star Wars is best when it takes itself seriously, keeps comic relief to a minimum, and tackles profound ideas. Not to say that it can't be fun. Just don't make it stupid.
You know it's a good day when Nutsa gifts us with another video
found this channel a little while back and i love ur vids - u deserve more subs!
But I mean even if we only get good Star Wars every 5 years, that is more than we used to get.
I'm subscribed to dozens and dozens of channels but Nutsa's & two others are the only ones that I've watched multiple times, over & over.
Let the sludge flow continue...
..I hope you can check patterson Cut Obi Wan I know the series can`t be fixed but it makes it enjoyable with some clever edits.
You manage to point out the inherent flaws of modern Star Wars and the reception much better than plenty of critics nowadays, great job.
legend came back
always love your title transitions. i know those take a while to make so super happy you continue to do it. Great vid as well.
..I hope you can check patterson Cut Obi Wan I know the series can`t be fixed but it makes it enjoyable with some clever edits. z
There is nore creativity put into the making of this video, than the show it's actually centered about.
your editing is just insane. THIS is what content is.
on a serious note, huge fan! keep going! road to 100k!!
The "Kenobi" novel by John Jackson Miller is one of my favorite Star Wars books. I really wish the show had been more like that book.

Every time you post I remember why I subscribed. Your videos are so well made!

This should have a million views easy. The production and editing are top notch, and every point is made clear and concise. Plus, now I can't get that Vader theme ditty out of my head. 😄
Babe wake up, Nutsa put out another Star Wars video.
Awesome vid. I’d also add that entertainment isn’t what it used to be in general. It seems more like a bunch of cool visuals tied together by some random plot than cool visuals built around a captivating idea.

Watcher from efap over here, they were right. Your editing is awesome! Gongrats
I just have to say that you’re extremely talented in video making. It’s not often am watching a UA-cam video and stop to think… holy shit this looks visually amazing. It’s absolutely criminal that you don’t get more views based on the quality of you’re content.
This channel don't miss
i love how the intros are like darth vader being super dark and edgy sitting at his cool throne and shit and then your super sweet calm and funny voice starts playing
Found you from EFAP, watched all of your videos at this point. You're a fantastic content creator, keep it up, hope to see you back on again
I agree bad batch was good, although I'm not sure if it's just the nostalgia from the clone wars talking lol
I’ll be interested to see how Bad Batch season 2 goes! Season 1 was good but I somehow still feel like it’s too early to tell how it’ll go. One thing Bad Batch has going for it is that we don’t know the fates of almost ANY of the characters (save side characters like Rex) so there’s a lot of potential there
Thank you for this @nutsa. This is awesome and i appreciate this so much.
I love the intro/editing it's so impressive dude
Would love to hear you comment on Andor next. It seems the spin-offs get a bit more love for their creative direction in the fact they don’t have to adhere to previous character development.
Great video! Keep them coming!
I love this. I recently did a podcast where we discussed Kenobi and I think my co host and I were in denial about the quality of it
I like to reflect on the idea of going back in time to the 2000s, and telling my past self that in the future there will be a live action Star Wars show with a movie-level budget, starring Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan Kenobi, and another show starring Boba Fett. The cruel irony... certainly a monkey's paw scenario if there ever was one.
You have hit the nail right on it's head when it comes to the problems with Star Wars now. Disney is so focused on the quantity that it's forgotten about the quality of the story and characters.
Man that opening to this video, that's some fine editing!
I'm so happy EFAP discovered this channel
great watch! coherent, good points, great editing, just good stuff all round. I think you captured the heart of the problem and this video is what I'll probably show my friends when they ask me why I've been disillusioned with star wars
(was a bit sad to see Howzer there because I love TBB but I have to admit the show isn't immune to fan service and repetitiveness. still think it had more soul than any of the live action series)
The epic Star Wars recorder music in the background is arguably better than almost anything Disney has done with Star Wars thus far.
Great Essay! you really sum up my feelings on this Show. Also the editing is TOP TIER!I Plan to do Film Essays myself in Beat Future & you really inspired me! :)
A problem I also have with the Show „Is Obiwan pointless?“ as we have another Prequel to Anakin & Leia & Luke Even tho we know how the Skywalker Saga ends.
"This entire franchise is no longer an art form, not a genre, it's a merch". It perfectly encapsulates what I feel about Star Wars.
Oooohhh my gooossshhh I remember vader! The imperial March! I remember that!😱😱👏👏.
But seriously great video. You touched on the issues perfectly. I wish more people would wake up and see that the franchise is dead, no matter how many flashy lights or big actors they bring in.
Hope you are doing well💙👌😎
Just stop watching … I did but I’m not enough …
It’s not dead but it’s not alive either
@@turtlesrprettycool3379 it’s undead
The way you use your editing to punctuate your points, Nutsa, is really well done. Good soup.
Love your channel. Stay inspired!
Dude, your videos are some of the most well edited ive seen in ages. Honestly thought you had millions of subs, definitely what i expected from the video quality
Best video on Star Wars I’ve seen in forever 🎉. Its brevity was its strength 🙏🏼.
Stumbled across your channel back at your prequel video but never took time to watch one of your videos until now.
And so far, I'm pretty impressed.
andor was a breath of freash air, it gave me hope in star wars that people in Hollywood still care about star wars
Brilliant as always. Your understanding of this murder case is as astute as possible
I love your editing and effects. Awesome work. I totally, 100% agree with your thoughts on the matter as well. I miss the Star Wars I grew up with.
my guy just GIVE US OLD REPUBLIC MOVIES! IT'S LITERALLY RIGHT. THERE! COME ON, DUDE!
Star wars will never fall
I think there's a bit of a civil war going on within Lucasfilm. It's why the writing and plot points within Kenobi swing so widely between hot steaming garbage that undermines the best parts of Obi-wan and messes with the continuity (looking at you, trenchcoat scene), and incredibly emotionally impactful plot points that laser-focus in on the heartbreak experienced by Obi-wan losing his best friend to the monster that friend became. Seriously, the duel was the best part of the entire show: "Anakin's gone. I am what remains." "You didn't fail anakin. I killed him."
This is an amazing video not just your points but also the editing is incredible
Y'all crazy. The Obi-Wan series might not have been perfect. But it had tons of good stuff. Appreciate it for what it gave us.
This is why andor was so refreshing to see
It's a shame I cut D+ for good thanks to Obi Wan Kenobi or else I would be watching Andor.
Kenobi should've been a cakewalk. Instead, it made legions of people that were still holding on finally give up the hope that Star Wars is constantly claiming to stand for.
This was a great video, with each one you get better and better. Can't wait to see what's next!
Richard cheeses the lounge awakens is the best star wars content since new hope
The world building in Andor is really great
"it's a merch" wow this really sums it up
Side note. Please do more reviews, your content is criminally underrated.
Funny thing is, Clone Wars and Rebels also filled out gaps between movies and yet managed to tell compelling stories.
What an amazing work of art this video is!
