      Exactly. Or given the recent revelation of the multiverse, they should explore other characters' smaller stories in different universes. Smaller and self contained would aid in building up interest. But, it could be a mistake anyway. Film genres can just burn out. My first concern is that they just keep churning these things out until the audience is so fatigued that they're forced to retire them for 20 years. The alternative is worse. Different is exciting. Marvel dominating in the same capacity for another 15 years would require nothing new came along to replace them. I recently rewatched a number of DCEU and MCU films. I struggled with MCU, but with the DCEU, it was a surprisingly pleasure to just watch something that looked different. My enjoyment was a involuntary function of too much marvel.

It builds hype by having all content be more build up for other content, or it reels you in with content you’re already familiar with while putting little actual emphasis on the quality of the stories being told; writing has taken a backseat to shallow fan fair, grandeur, a message, or just plain spectacle.

    I've talked about it before that one of the reasons I can't get in to any of the new stuff is bc they either spend too much time world building and/or can't make a small scale story about one person, like Iron Man or Cap America

      This brings me to their obsession with going cosmic. IDK why but it always rubbed me the wrong way when they said they wanted to basically leave earth to go to space. Which is why they may be constantly world building. I don't fully understand why they were so confident this was the right call. Sure they said there would always be earth heroes and technically Shang Chi should've been one of them but it barely felt like it. I understand space must be a thing for the MCU so ofc they can't just not do it, and I don't want them to give up on it fully either but IDK, they need to still ground things a little bit I guess.

    The whole splitting attention between multiple characters in a solo movie really hits the nail on the head with why every movie is feeling mediocre nowadays. They should save that for the teamup movies ONLY. That's the whole point of teamup movies.

    • @brandonm1708
      @brandonm1708 2 роки тому +8

      The thing is, you’re able to do a lot of great character work with splitting between many characters. Look at 12 Angry Men; there’s 12 characters that each take up a lot of screen time, with no real main character, but it is able to build them all up to be interesting people. The problem comes in when the directors of these movies don’t know how to use the time in an efficient, yet effective manner. You get a lot of them talking about the plot, but you never get to see *who they are* through what they say.

    When a movie has literally nothing else going for it, that's when they hit you over the head with how diverse it is. Nowadays I see a movie being advertised as diverse I just assume it's a stinker unless proven otherwise.

    • @MrAlexo01
      @MrAlexo01 3 роки тому +16

      Representation isn't a bad thing tho, it's quite the opposite in fact. It's just that most current movie production suck at writing good representation that doesn't feel forced for most people.
      The only MCU movie that has that stigma imo is Captain Marvel and I'm actually starting to like this one as well besides all the things that went on backstage at the time.

    • @AliRadicali
      @AliRadicali 3 роки тому +55

      @@MrAlexo01 Representation isn't good or bad, it just is. Treating it as some sort of magical spice that automatically improves whatever it is added to is how you get "diversity done poorly" IE forced diversity. I think the very mindset that causes people to think that diversity axiomatically improves the product causes them to be unable to write "diverse" characters as fully-rendered complex people. Instead you get incredibly safe, tame, boring cardboard cutouts and stereotypes, not to mention goodie-two-shoes mary sues. Why? Because once you treat a character as REPRESENTATIVE OF DEMOGRAPHIC X, you no longer can have character flaws, failures and obstacles to overcome as these will be seen as negative portrayals of Demographic X.
      Writers have a lot more freedom with straight white male characters because no one is going to burn down the building to protest the portrayal of white dudes.
      I don't think 12 Angry Men would be a better movie if it were more "diverse" in terms of race or gender.

    • @MrAlexo01
      @MrAlexo01 3 роки тому +11

      @@AliRadicali I'm not really trying to say that movies/media that aren't diverse aren't good, because like you said, that would just encourage movie makers to put in "diverse characters" just to earn brownie points with certain audiences. On the other hand, it is kinda weird if you were to only show straight white male characters, because reality is just way more complex than that.
      You shouldn't really aim to write "diverse characters", but rather characters that just are believable and not just cartboard cutouts or Mary Sues, like you said as well.
      And again, I'm not saying that you should have to include representation if it either totally doesn't fit in your story or if you don't have any idea what you're writing about.

    • @RedMoonSolitary
      @RedMoonSolitary 2 роки тому +9

      @@MrAlexo01 it's definitely not ,but I think there's so much focus on it that they kind of forget to put focus into the rest of the story and building characters with actual depth and personality, but you can't say that, because then you'll be that woman in the crowd being called a misogynist because you didn't like the female character.

    • @MrAlexo01
      @MrAlexo01 2 роки тому +4

      @@RedMoonSolitary I'm 100% on board with what you said.
      It may be too much at once. I personally just hope that this phase of "forced representation", "representation done wrong" or whatever you wanna call it is only a short one.
      Like I said in my other comment in this comment thread, if the only reason you have a character that is {insert minority here} in your story, it probably isn't a good idea, people/company that do this stuff usually don't really care about any of that and do this stuff only for the publicity.
      Again, you shouldn't write characters that are representation, and representation only (meaning their character is basically non-existant), but rather good characters that happen to be representative.
      Representation is just the way to go imo, the world just isn't as black and white as it is shown in most media. Does that mean that you should love and accept all representation just because it is? Does that mean that all people that are against inclusive characters are against the groups that this character is trying to represent? Obviously not.
      Most of the times, people don't hate representation but they hate the way it is done by the companies and the reason they do it. Aaaand, people that go around and call others names just because they don't like a representative character don't really help...
      I'm sorry, that you experienced stuff like that. I would've liked to say that not all people that are pro-representation are like that, but it's true a lot of them are like that, especially online on Twitter and stuff.
      I just hope that those experiences don't end up turning you against representation fully, like it probably did for most people that are currently against it.

    The MCU formula only works in Marvel. But in other movies... Well no. Disney thought that they could treat Star Wars as Marvel movies, and look how they ended. I think that Scorsese is right, when he said that marvel movies are like an amusment parks. Marvel is awful when we talking to develop characters. If the people want to see the new movie of Spiderman is not because of Tom Holland, is because the old villans from previosuley movies, or the possibility to see Tobey and Andrew return. If the movie weren't have anyone of this factors, nobody would feel interested in it.

    A very good example of a huge franchise I recommend diving into is Lupin the 3rd. It's a show that's been alive and well in Japan for over 50 years, and they do so much different things with it. They let very different creators work on it, yet they always stick to the same formulas. They managed to make new movies and shows feel very fresh because they let different artists with different views work on them. Kind of like we have different interpretations of Joker in the DC films. For example, check out the recent seasons, they go from goofy to extremely dark, and they recently tried 3D animation that worked really well.
    I think in order to understand a lot of franchises in the west it's good to check out Lupin since it inspired lots of Disney films and shows (and anime of course). It's been a real animation history class for me after I checked out the franchise.

    • @ALookIntoTheEulenspiegel
      @ALookIntoTheEulenspiegel Рік тому

      That ironic, because the Marvel movies are based on a franchise that's 80 years old (Marvel before the movies) and basically follows the same core principle as Lupin. They don't need to learn from the Lupin formula, they were already doing it and then used it as a jumping off point to dominate cinemas worldwide.
      Not to mention that... you know. Goofy, extremely dark, animation? Those are all things Marvel has already done. Goofy is most of the stuff, but there is also things like Punisher, Daredevil and the Spider-verse movies. So they're basically already doing all of those things. It just gives the illusion of only being goofy, because that's what the most successful are. Well... except for the infinity war arc, which was.... really not all that goofy.

    The MCU films feeling more like rides was most apparent to me during No Way Home. When I watched there were only a few other people there and nobody was loud or spoke or anything. The jokes were so awkward in delivery and scenes were so quiet because Marvel intended for their audience to laugh at points and not miss what was said next. Andrew Garfield’s entrance was especially awkward as he just through the portal and the music just cuts out and Ned’s relative let’s out a wail while there is no other sound.

    I think what also helped old MCU was that they didn't have a fully known direction. They were still testing things, which gave more total flops, but it also allowed the team to work one piece at a time. Instead of following a single and strict direction that gets whittled down due to arising problems, old MCU allowed more creative freedom and flexibility because they didn't entirely know what the ending would be. That acknowledgement of the unknown forced creators to develop strong movies to serve as a foundation for the next piece.

    I'm happy that among all the boring stones like eternals, black widow, falcon etc, SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME is like a hidden gem among them which focusses on the characters, character arcs, character moments stretching from over 2 decades across different franchises, trying to capitalize that nostalgia effect and taking it to the next level with top class acting, character moments, throwbacks and actually putting effort into tying the plot points within and across these franchises, along with the obvious "Marvel" tropes of - comedy, scale, grandness, visual spectacle.
    I'm really feeling that Spiderman no way home is like the last glimmer of hope in post-endgame-MCU scenario, where the movie actually has a heart to it and cares for its characters and doesn't shyaway from showing the character depth. They perfectly balanced the spectacle which casual audience want and the heart, character arcs, moments, relatability among the characters and with the characters which the fans who care for these characters want.
    I was little skeptic when I saw the trailer as whether it would JUST be a bunch of villians and heros from different franchises, (which is not bad and is the ultimate fan service), or the movie also add something that makes us care about these characters more...
    And this movie absolutely nailed it by threading the needle so perfectly by balancing both style as well as the substance. Both fan service as well as adding to the beloved characters.
    Not to mention I actually liked portrayals, depth from some characters from the older spiderman franchises more in No way home than the original...
    This speaks for itself.... How good the attempt is in actually giving a fullfiling story for the beloved characters and see them have their fullfilling moments and adding depth to their already well fleshed out characters...

I love your editing, too, by the way, very seamless and engaging. But, as someone who has been critical and/or just downright bored of most of the TV shows and movies the MCU has put out lately, No Way Home is an excellent movie that seemed to bring back the magic from the previous Marvel movies that's been missing from their other products. It actually respects the characters in it and creates a poignant and heartfelt story that isn't overshadowed by a big CGI fest and too much MCU humor. Whether this transfers to other Marvel movies down the line remains to be seen, though.

    I can’t help but wonder how much of this “formula” problem is Disney’s doing. Ever since Disney acquired Marvel (just before Age of Ultron, I think), the movies have gotten bigger and samey-er. I keep hearing stories about directors for individual Marvel movies having to contend with executives and management in how the story is told. Films like Thor Ragnarok and Spider-Man Homecoming feel unique because the directors got lucky. I think it would be a mistake to pretend that the people making these movies are mindless followers of the monolith. Disney’s corporatization of moviemaking is harming the creativity of not only Marvel movies, but everything under the Disney umbrella. I hope that there is some way for the audience and the creators to resist against the monolith, as the only thing it’s good for is printing dollars.

    Iron Man to Eternals is damn near polar opposites. One character character study/development in which the non-hero guy is super important to just going Nigel Tufnel and dumping, what, 11 new characters, plus supporting characters, plus villains into one movie that exists within the framework of two dozen other films? What in the hell where they thinking? I did collect Marvel titles between the mid-80s through early 90s and even before Infinity War I hitting a boredom point with the movies. Enjoy IW/EG well enough, but didn't go out of my way to see any of the flicks. Still haven't seen some even when available as a free in-flight movie during long 9 hour flights... I'd rather listen to books on Audible or watch whatever Parks & Rec re-runs they have for the 18th time.

    That’s the thing. Even the pre-phase-4 Marvel movies weren’t as deep or great as the big-old classics, like Star Wars. The CGI bluster already put style over substance back then. Even the original Spider-Man movie, for all its flaws, I’ve always found more memorable than any Avengers film. Infinity War was of course the epitome of character quantity over quality. And Thanos as a villain was a strawman of his own philosophy, and the heroes never beat him on a philosophical level - they just use his own weapons against him.

    Your last argument works extremely well for "Multiverse of Madness." The movie is extremely confusing to people who don't do their homework, you need to know Sam Raimi movies to understand references, you need to watch Wanda vision to even understand the reason the plot exists, you need to watch Doctor Strange to understand why Christine is even important to him, you need to know of the X-men, fantastic 4, captain Marvel, and marvel's what if to just understand why and what is happening and who these people even are. Otherwise it's just an avalanche of references and pretty colours with a wonky horror(?) soup on the side. For someone like me who is super into marvel and has watched every single marvel property and read a ton of comics I actually have the necessary information to understand the wack fest that is happening.

    I had really weird epiphany about this when Eternals came out. I'm not a big fan of MCU. I used to enjoy Guardians of the Galaxy, but other than that, these films just feel the same for me. So, when I saw Eternals I was dumbstrucked, because I got an sci-fi epic, with some interesting characters, which managed to get my attention, throughout whole screentime, through characters and their interactions, and overall, stood on it's own legs. It really felt different from other MCU films. And then I've read the reviews. And then it struck me. It's not that I expected MCU films to be different, or more character driven. It's more that I expected MCU films to be unlike MCU films. But that's not what Die hard fans of these expect.
    It's kinda funny and ironic, I have one friend, with whom I'm watching all MCU films together, and he's always complaining about them doing something not like in the comics, but he doesn't complain about formulaic nature of these films. For him, and many others, that's just part of the charm. These people really do seem to expect these films to be the same.
    And what I've noticed, is that it became much more fun to theorize about new movies, than watching them. I still go to see them, but not because I expect to have my mind blown, but because I'm interested in what's going to happen within them, and how it's going to affect future films. It's really weird, come to think of it, because it feels like, playing 'what if' scenarios in my mind is much more fun to me, than these movies themselves...
    Yea, I don't know where I'm going with this, so I'm just going to say, really great essay, got me thinking about a thing or two.

    I feel like this video essay should have been posted after Spider-Man: No Way Home came out and Nutsa saw it for herself before judging it. While I agree with her main point over all about the recent Marvel movies focusing on spectacle over building the foundations of characters I, after seeing No Way Home, disagree that it didn't focus the majority of it's time on Peter Parker/Tom Holland, in fact, I'd go so far as to say it is the first time since Homecoming that I truly connected with Tom's version of Peter and felt that they made his version of Spider-Man feel like Spider-Man. Though the comment at the end of her thoughts on it gives me hope that she'll have some thoughts on the movie and how it stacks up will come out later. I reckon the screenwriters make complications in the wrong way. They add childhood traumas, complicated relationships and representation groups issues in order to make a character "deeper" and/or "relatable". To be honest, I do not identify myself with Luke Skywalker in The New Hope, but I still enjoy the movie. That's why the plot is higher priority here than "character development". Because going this way, following the template, Woody Allen could make a superhero movie. Beyond-Human sitting in a room with a therapist and flashbacks on their life of childhood traumas and occasional adventures. This sucks. Now wouldn't even bother to pirate those superhero movies.

    Marvel is starting to turn into what I call "fast food movies." Rather than being made to explore a character's story within the style of a director, they're meant to be consumable, safe crowd pleasers that hit formulaic beats. Which in my opinion is worse than anything else: People will usually remember a terrible movie or a great movie, but nobody remembers an average movie.

      The big problem with what Scorsese said is that he attributed it to the fact that it had superheroes. Marvel’s newer stuff is soulless, but that has nothing to do with them being superhero movies. It’s all because they have such a big audience now, that they can pump out movies and people won’t care about its quality. Some Marvel movies have just the same amount of emotional weight as any other movie Scorsese would consider “cinema”, but Scorsese ignores it because he isn’t focusing on the quality of the writing, he’s focused on the genre it’s a part of

    Perfectly laid out.
    My only confusion of it all rests with who is to blame. Is it Disney directly, indirectly, or squarely upon Marvel?
    Before the acquisition, Marvel was already making moves that year. A film division was made. Iron man 1 dropped, setting a very, very new tone. Then came the new hulk. The MCU concept was already underway. The big gamble was looking as though it may work. Marvel however, would still need the strict yet sometimes ignorant controls of the CEO Ike if they were going to balance creative liberty and financial stability in the new film arena. Ike rescued the company from ruin once before, and wouldn’t let the new success cause misguided spending on new releases. This was truly a new era for the company. Their stories were about to be told as never before.
    When Disney purchased them later that year (august 2008) the financial constraints were loosening, but Bob Iger out of respect for Ike and honoring of his word, didn’t interfere with Ike’s running of Marvel.
    Around 2015 tension between Ike and Kevin Feige forced Bob to directly interfere in order to prevent Kevin’s resignation. Kevin wanted to create captain marvel and black panther. Ike didn’t want to spend money on either film. Bob relocated Marvel Studios from under Marvel Entertainment to Walt Disney Studios. Bob then promoted Kevin to chief creative officer, placing the entire television lineup under him as well. Ike’s company structure was collapsed and confiscated from him.
    Now we are at a point where Disney directly spends as Kevin wants on almost anything, but with a catch I don’t think Kevin had in mind when he pleaded for their direct intervention with Ike. Bob was perfectly content with passively benefiting from Marvel under Ike’s leadership. Now that the most profitable component of the company is directly managed by his own studio head, Ike’s opinions and authority are gone. Now the focus seemed to pivot towards cranking out a lot more content all the way up to mindless filler for their streaming app.
    Who is to blame here? I really don’t know. To say Ike was ignorant is an understatement. He is the ultimate corporate villain, but kept a tight grip on Marvel and their finances. I think the ultimate blame falls on Disney. Once they directly took over the creative division for film and television from marvel in 2015, a noticeable shift started. I am not surprised that the television shows seemed far superior on Netflix before the restructuring. Most of the Disney+ shows are subpar filler.

    Funny that as Star Wars was failing, Marvel became the new juggernaut franchise. Only for Disney to decide to take Mavel down the same path they took Star Wars which led to it's decline. Madness.

    I'm not entirely thrilled in the upcoming spider man movie, despite me being a fan of its character even since when I was young.
    Sam Raimi's (hope i spelled it correctly) Spiderman was a compelling movie that teaches you good moral lessons in life. It also take away the idea of big spectacle being the main focus of the film, just everlasting conclusions.
    (But the 3rd sequal was weaker compared to the first 2)

      The 3rd may have been the weakest but it for sure made itself a name from memes such as “Bully Maguire” which I have to admit are hilarious but can get tiresome quickly. Tho it’s fun that a we get together as a community to celebrate and embrace that movie’s weird flaws

      Take it from someone that has seen No Way Home, it's actually a good and enjoyable movie and I can only recommend seeing it for yourself.

    Ironically, Scorsese was absolutely right, but about the future of the MCU, not about what had come out when he said it.

    The only movies that tried to do something else were captain America civil war and winter Soldier in my opinion.

    The MCU's problem is not the lack of Imagination rather it's their lack of phasing and grooming supporting cast and keeping the cast at minimum to monitor quality for example ant man, Spider-Man, Black Panther and Captain Marvel are filler movies only there to hype the plot while guardians and Dr Strange exist successfully without the avengers which made them worthy to join the avengers. The point I'm making is Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and Dr strange should be priority number 1 for infinity Saga and in that way Bruce, Natasha, Clint, Roddy, Bucky, Sam, Sharon Carter, and Wong would grow sub arcs alongside the main person they support. resulting in phase 4 focusing on them to do a better job than the main 3.
